What do you expect Denver and SD to be ready for...
Last week, Denver basically dared the Raiders to try and win the match up game in the air with a TE or slot WR versus a S or LB, because Denver was playing in a base run defense on anything resembling a running down. There was no reason to get cute with overages or even disguise them. Denver wanted Russell dropping back or rolling out to pass the ball. Any head coach worth his salt would have tried a few plays out of bunch and flexing the TE out in order to maximize a potential personnel mismatch, and Kiffin did so. The raiders did that on a few occasions, and a few of those times, it actually worked but they couldn't execute and complete the pass.
I think the Broncos defense played very well against a team that really does have a good running game. Now, it's not Chargers good, but it’s good. Versus the Chargers, I expect to see Boss Bailey on Gates and at one safety playing over the top (McRee). I expect to see 8 in the box with press corners and lots of run blitzes. Rivers doesn't have enough mobility to avoid even Robertson, so if anyone gets back there and there's no RB to tangle with, Rivers will have to hurry the ball out of the backfield. Denver will get scored on next week, and I expect Denver to give up a few TDs and a few FGs. From what I saw last week versus Carolina, I honestly don't think the Chargers can score with the Broncos. I think the coaching staff for the Broncos is taking this game extremely seriously. We'll see some creative plays again, and I think Shanny, Cutler, and Bates will be making the Chargers safeties and linebackers really work on the first few series, chasing Royal and Young and Hall and Stokely and Scheffler and Jackson and Marshall all over the place.
San Diego has owned Denver for 4 games, and especially the last 2. But Denver has a different offensive philosophy this year. They are passing more than running. Denver's mix of plays and players on the field at any given time is far different from what it has been for the last few seasons. I think the teams are fairly evenly matched and I think Denver has closed the gap or maybe even caught up to San Diego from a talent perspective (at least on offense and if you mix in San Diego's injuries, Denver's darn close). The difference makers will be the players' ability to NOT make mistakes and the head coaches' game plans.
Denver's defense will come into this game with two goals: 1) Bottle up LT and 2) Hit Rivers. The first point is obvious. The second point is that Rivers is not 100 percent. He's still hurt, and after hits, he's playing extra gimpy and throwing off of one foot. I thought last week that he looked uncomfortable in the pocket after being hit. I think Denver will try and make him run for his life and if he does get a pass off, he's going to have to pick himself up off of the grass. I think this plan puts Denver at risk for long screen plays (a Charger staple), but at least the Denver LBs are fast enough and good enough tacklers to pull these guys down without a jailbreak happening a few times.
The Chargers, I would assume, will be blitzing with their ends and LBs in the first quarter to put Jay on his back and blow up any running plays in front of them behind the LOS. In my opinion, I don’t think that the Charger CBs match up at all with the Denver WRs, and I can’t imagine the LBs can run with Scheffler or Young. So, if Cutler has time, the Chargers are cooked, but if they can have a somewhat consistent pass rush, they can change Denver’s play calling and make it more conservative.
This is just a wild guess, and it's fun to speculate, so here goes, and wouldn't you think Denver could throw in a few drives with a hurry-up offense? We'll see, but Shanny's got something up his sleeve, I'm sure of it; the magic's BACK, baby:
| Cutler | 30/41 258 2 TD |
| Young | rush 10/45 rec 2/13 |
| Hall | rush 13/57 rec 1/6 |
| Pittman | rush 6/23 1 TD |
| Royal | rush 2/16 rec 10/76 1 TD |
| Marshall | rec 11/108 1 TD |
| Stokley | rec 1/17 |
| Scheffler | rec 5/38 |
| Prater | FG 3/3 |
| Broncos | 30 |
| Chargers | 23 |
| Rivers | 19/32 156 1 TD 1 INT |
| LT | rush 22/119 1TD rec 5/28 |
| Sproles | rush 3/12 rec 2/16 |
| Tolbert | rush 2/9 rec 1/6 |
| Chambers | rec 3/24 |
| Jackson | rec 5/56 1 TD |
| Gates | rec 3/26 |
| Kaeding | FG 3/3 |
In the end, this is Denver’s home opener. The crowd will be electric. Denver fans will be ferocious. They haven’t felt like they will feel on Sunday at 2:00 pm since January of 2005. It will be a sea of crisp, bright orange and navy blue with bright white number fifteens and sixes and sevens, maybe even a few eighty-eights and fifty-fives. The noise that will rain down on the Charger offense will be absolutely deafening and soaked in contempt for this bitter rival. The offensive linemen wearing white helmets will, without a doubt, have a hard time hearing the snap count. Denver and their coaches will certainly want to give the fans what they want early and often and I expect every page of that playbook to be available this week just like I expect a few overload-blitzes or a blitzing Marquand Manuel sneaking up behind the decreasingly mobile Phillip Rivers.

Big thing we need to stay aggressive
I know Shanny is going to have some tricks inhis sleeves, but I think it is critical we get ahead early and make San Diego play from behind, and therby take LT out of the game. Norv Turner always gets hesitent to use LT much when they fall behind (big mistake) and if he shifts the game to Rivers hands to win, then we need to pound him into the ground, turnovers will follow and Denver will be happy. The one thing I definately don’t want to see is if we do get ahead, to have us go conservative and allow San Diego to get quick stops on the offense.

great point
A quick lead would be huge. Hopefully Denver stays really fresh with our playcalling on the first few drives.

Looking at the games last year,
I don’t think we will get conservative should we get a lead. I think Shanahan and the coaching staff or going to be aggressive on Sunday. Keeping LT in check is a must.
The playcalling in OAK was mixed up a bit so I expect that to continue. I am sure Shanny has something peticular in mind for SD.
Let’s go……..time to get some revenge.

I agree with a lot of your post
I was at the SD vs. Carolina game. What I saw:
- I don’t know if it’s their banged up OL or that LT’s cape is aging, but SD’s running game looked ordinary.
- Vincent Jackson was SD’s best receiver.
- Clinton Hart and Quentin Jammer were regularly toasted by Panther WRs. Cromartie was trying too hard instead of letting the game “come to him.”
- Gates only came into the game when he was the targeted receiver, and he left the field slowly each time.
- Jacob Hester does not concern me nearly as much Michael Turner did.
What I expect next Sunday:
- Shanahan will target 2nd-year LB Jyles Tucker (#94), Merriman’s replacement.
- Denver will be aggressive on offense. As already posted, an early lead would be huge for us. Our best chance is to try to make SD keep up with us on the scoreboard.
- Like you said, lots of blitzing from both teams. Denver’s Slowik has this reputation, and the Chargers offense can get rattled (Rivers and LT are a little high-strung). The Chargers defense will want to test our inexperienced OTs.
And just an FYI, I heard announcers on the radio this morning calling for AJ Smith to bring back Junior Seau to fill Merriman’s roster spot. On the one hand that would be great, because I always thought he was overrated, on the other hand it might be terrible, as he would definitely provide an emotional boost to balance the fears around Merriman’s lost. Either way, it’s pie in the sky and I don’t expect it to happen.
by CoastalBronco on Sep 10, 2008 11:29 AM MDT 0 recs
They can't be serious about Seau??
First off, he is a MLB, and definately doesn’t have the wheels to play outside and is too old and small to rush the passer from the edge, secondly, I doubt that anyone on San Diego’s team really cares if he comes back seeing how he was on a New England team that beat them last year, so I hope they would bring him back, because I am sure he would be abused as he was in New England last year.

I heard the same thing
Seau is done, the past 3-4 seasons he has had to play inside because he is not as fast as he was in the past. BR Smith and that clown Kaplan need to start something because their ratings are dropping

No joke. It does seem like they’re reaching for something to talk about a lot of the time.

Roster Spot
I am not sure if I would use a 53 man roster spot just for Seau locker room presence. Perhaps they can cut LT to make room. HA.

to live here
you have to deal with people that think the chargers and old “cagey” vets are the answer, plus the Pads suck and SD is in crisis mode so they need something to drive up saggin ratings on the sports stations. Pathetic really.

Lynch could, in a pinch...
..play ILB in SDs version of the 3-4. But he doesn’t have the speed for OLB. They would have to juggle the positions. Better to get someone else.

SD is missing two key players..
Marcus McNeill (who is overrated in my opinion, but still better than LJ Shelton) would have made them feel a little more comfortable matching up with Elvis Dumervil. On the other side, the loss of Merriman disappoints me a little, because I was looking forward to seeing Ryan Clady dominate him. He’ll have to make do with Jyles Tucker, who did get 3 sacks in the season finalelast year (against the conquered nation of the chokeland faders.)

I had been impressed with McNeil
When I saw what he did with two broken hands his rookie year, that was amazaing, so I wouldn’t say he is over-rated. Just my opinion though. But I am guessing that San Diego would of challenged Harris more than Clady with Merriman, that’s wher I would test the Broncos. I think Clady is proving that he was the best LT prospect in the draft.

I think a bigger loss
for them is if Nick Hardwick is out again. He is a real good center. Plus Gates isnt 100% healthy. He was quoted as saying he may have to shut it down for a while if he doesnt start feeling better. His toe is an issue. The old gates would never have been stripped of that ball last week. Something to ponder

You stated: chasing Royal and Young and Hall and Stokely and Scheffler and Jackson all over the place.
What about the Marshal plan? That should make things worse for SD

The Chargers are going to discover the same thing the Raiders discovered Monday.
This team is NOT the same team from last year. We’re not gonna come out and get smacked around. The Chargers had better be prepared for that or they are going to get caught with their hand in the cookie jar.
You didn’t mention BMarsh in the list of names up there….he’s playing this week isn’t he? :)

Great analysis Super7!
As you mentioned, I think we need to really worry about screens and quick outs to LT. If Slowik is planning on being as aggressive as we think we will be vulnerable to these types of plays. We may be able to solve this by simply placing a full time spy on LT. Perhaps McCree.

I think they kept him out of the oak-town game to make sure he would be healthy for the Chargers.

OK
This morning I heard the losers here on the radio belittle Denver some more. Saying that denver is clearly the 2nd best team in the West and SD will win the divison comfortably over them. Well Shanny is 12-1 in hope openers and hasnt lost since 1999 against Miami. That was Griese’s first start and the first game post Elway. Anyway LT is banged up with toe ailment, along with Gates whose toe isnt 100. Hardwick wont play most likely as it was stated by our buddy Coastal. McNeil has a neck injury and I dont forsee him playing, Williams is hurting and that will hamper their rush defense. The overrated Cromartie has a hurting hip. If he isnt 100 Marshall will own him, well #15 would own him if he was healthy. What I want to see is a dominating performance again. I want to see the offense score at will and Mike Scifers to have a good day kicking the ball to Eddie Royal. I see a 34-21 win.

I'm rolling
with a 27-21 Broncos win right now, but I definitely agree with what you are saying here.
My problem right now is I want to see the Bronco’s pass rush against SD before I can feel good about what this defense is capable of doing. I can see Phyllis and the boys playing strong late in the game on offense, if we don’t slam the door on them early.
I will put a lot of stock into our defense making them punt or worse on their first drive. I would feel real good about that. (Of course, assuming that we score on our first drive.)

The problem is that so early in the season...
I’m NOT surprised when our opponent marches down the field on the 1st drive. The Broncos’ biggest strategic weakness on defense since the 2005 team is that they don’t adjust in time.
Last week, they adjusted on the 2nd drive.
I’ll be curious to see if SD looks any different than they always do, thinking that Shanny’s gameplanned their offense to death.
If the Chargers don’t mix it up and do some things differently, I think they’ll be in trouble early.
