Stock Watch: Chargers - Week 2 - 2008
If the Chargers were a stock, would you buy, sell, or hold
They lost in Week 1 (0-1). The defense allowed Jake Delhomme, fresh off of Tommy John Surgery, to complete 8-11 passes on a two-minute drill to win the game. It was a game played in San Diego, the Chargers' home record is 0-1 so far in 2008. They must travel to Denver and face the Broncos who dismantled Oakland in Oakland last week. Although the Raiders weren't expected to win, it was expected to be a competitive game. Oakland is obviously less competitive than originally thought, but Denver is obviously more competitive than originally thought.
San Diego is having some personnel issues as it pertains to injuries. Take a look at their offseason activity in free agency and the draft. They really didn't do much to help themselves as far as depth goes. There are very notable names on the right side of the column as well as the FA's lost column.
San DIego is still a very formidable team, they have players like Jyles Tucker, albeit untested, who could potentially step up in the wake of Merriman's loss. Rivers played very well in Week 1. LT will be starting on Sunday. Luis Castillo and Jamal Williams will also be starting on what was a very solid defensive unit in 2007.
| 2008 Draft Picks | Key Injuries (as of Week 2) |
| 1 - (27) CB Antoine Cason 6-0, 190 Arizona | LB Shawne Merriman - Out for Season (knee) |
| 3 - (69) FB/RB Jacob Hester 5-11, 230 LSU | C Nick Hardwick - Out until week 4 (foot) |
| 5 - (166) RB Marcus Thomas 6-2, 215 UTEP | TE Antonio Gates - Questionable (toe) |
| 6 - (192) CB DeJuan Tribble 5-9, 190 B.C. | RB LaDanian Tomlinson - Probable (toe) |
| 7 - (234) OT Corey Clark 6-6, 310 Tx. A & M | LT Marcus McNeill - Probable (neck) |
| 2008 Key Free Agent Acquisitions |
CB Antonio Cromartie - Probable (hip) |
| OL L.J Shelton | DT Jamal Williams - Probable (knees) |
| LB Derek Smith | LB Stephen Cooper - Suspended 4 games |
| 2008 Key Free Agent Losses | QB Phillip Rivers - Active (knee surgery) |
| CB Drayton Florence | |
| RB Michael Turner | |
| SS Marlon McRee | |
| RT Shane Olivea | |
| FB Lorenzo Neal |
They play a 1st place schedule butu are widely thought of as the top team in the AFC West, and a contender to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl.
The San Diego Chargers also have a cool, new logo:

Would you buy, sell, or hold the Chargers if they were a stock?

I think a smart play is Hold, but if they get down in the first half...
The runners at the exchange would go nuts screaming “Sell! Sell! Sell!”.
As much as this game is huge for Denver, its has the same amount of gravity for San Diego. The Chargers are a volatile team that plays with a ton of emotion, both bad and good.
I can also say that San DIego should be able to beat Denver this week. If they can’t, they’ll be put in the third tier group of contenders, which is where Denver will be if they can win the game.
The Chargers are 1 to 1.5 point favorites deponding upon the source.
I’ll be shocked if one of the teams wins by more than 10 points.

I would be willing to Sell
but I am like that. It isn’t recommended for everybody.:)
As an investor I would not like what I perceive as capital expenditures with little positive effect on gross profits or even revenues (lots of guys banged up and not producing). I am also not pleased with the board leadership who seem to have taken a “rest on your laurels” approach to the coming year. My money would be better of somewhere else, like in BRC:NYSE… expensive after last weeks showing, but has all the things I am looking for in a long term hold.
At this point I too would be surprised by a large margin of victory, and am leaning towards 6 points. Right between a one and two score game.

Styg,
Exactly my point, they aren’t maximizing profit OR growth potential. They’re stagnant and have no short term solution in place if something happens (Merriman or potentially Gates or holding breath LT). They’ve been getting by on a few great drafts a few years back, but haven’t added much value since. Their real differentiator has been their O-Line, and they are missing 40% of last year’s offensive line for this game against a direct competitor on the rise.
I think the world of LT, and he’s one of the best RBs in the game, but, frankly, Tatum Bell could have put up big numbers behind that O-Line over the past 2 years. I’d be interested to see what you guys think LT could have done behind the Jets’ O-Line over the last 2 years. My guess? 2600 yards 25 TD’s. Still a very years, but geez, not 3,289 yards with 43 TD’s.
It seems to me that if one of the wheels gets just a little looser, all four will fall off of the Chargers.

Buy!
Everyone is calling their demise, but it’s been one game and their stars all have reason to be rusty. Carolina will be better than most think (Delhomme has never looked better) and the Chargers will be back.

HAHAHAHA........
Here is my trading plan for the Chargirls. I see them as a company that has been near the top, however, like styg, I don’t really like the fundamentals. If I owned the stock right now I would Identify key support levels because I think they are headed for a fall within the next 2 years. I would sell the minute it started to look like the wheels were going to fall off, in the meantime I would sell covered call options on the stock to maximize profit. When I see a key support level broken, I will not only sell the stock but sell as many call option credit spreads as my capitol will safely allow due to the fact that the fundamentals are weak. Because of the weak fundamentals, the fall will be a big one. San Diego has a habit of staying down for awhile when they go down, much like Sears Holding, or Ford or GM. LOL what a blast to do a trade plan on a football team. My two loves rolled into one. Any other traders or investors out there want to come up with a long term trade plan?

Sell
I’m getting the sense that SD isn’t taking this game seriously. Two blowouts last year will do that. Superbowl assumptions will also do that.
I think the Broncos are hungrier, and if we have early success on both sides of the ball there’s a possibility of a wider margin of victory. Revenge is a strong motivator. So is a stadium full of rabid fans. I’ll take the Broncos, 37 – 24.
It’s funny how people are saying the Broncos only looked good because the Raiders are so bad, yet the Chargers looked bad because the Panthers are so good. I don’t buy either one. The Broncos played amazingly well against a difficult run game and superior secondary, especially considering they’re full of rookies and first-time starters. The Chargers were flat, mostly due to injuries and problems in the trenches on both sides of the ball.
Regarding last year:
- The Broncos were better than their record, suffering from injuries and distractions (T. Henry, J. Walker)
- The Chargers didn’t turn it on until midway through the season

I guarantee the Chargers are taking this game seriously!
The local media in SD may not be. The Chargers are coming off an embarrasing loss in their home opener and I’m sure they all watched Denver play Monday night and took note. They are in danger of going down 2 games in the division only 2 weeks into the season. They’re taking this game seriously!

I said Hold
Granted they have a first place schedule, but other than the Pittsburgh game, no really horrible road games outside the division, I think they have to go to New Orleans, but they have Indy and New England at home, which are both winnable games, but I think they will be a 4 to 5 loss team at the end of the year. But still looking up at the Broncos.

I think a better mascot would be :
The San Diego Toaster Ovens
Michael Fabiano really knows nothing about football outside of regression analysis and stat extrapolation. If it doesn’t have to do with fantasy football, his opinion is worthless.

I would Short Sell my Chargers holdings to Da Bolts.

The Chargers record last year
They came out weak, turned it on for 8 straight wins To end the season. Give them a lot of credit. for that.
But they did come out soft. They were soft last year. The other critiques – poor acquisitions, possible Norv factor, injuries – are all legitimate, although we’ll see just how far that goes.
I am interested to see if, as is often true, the team comes unravelled this season or if the 8-0 Chargers are the real team. Right now, I’m really not sure. They are very talented, and they have some good depth. That will win them some games. But are they ready to be this unfazed SB bound team that everyone (but MHR) was ready to annoint them beforee the first snap? Reality can rear its ungly head.
And kwool’s comment is a riot!

I would dollar cost average the Chargers!!!!
I think their stock will decline for a couple of weeks and then rise sharply midway thru the season.
