The Guru, and Friends, Predicts - NFL Week 2
Each year, I have given my thoughts and expertise a run for their money by publicly making my picks for each game every week. To add a twist, the fine contributors of MileHighReport have agreed to do the same, with the winner lying claim to the Title of "Best Game Picker On MHR Until Next Year..." or something like that.
This week, I have added my lovely wife to the list. Advice? Be afraid guys, be very afraid!
My thanks to Styg50, HoosierTeacher, Zappa, MDierk and Melissa for agreeing to partake in a little bit of fun. Without further ado, the picks --

wow, nice pix last week Zappa!
I just wanted to wonder… are you guys all like me and will pick the Broncos the entire season? Or will one of you actually dare to pick against them!? ;)

When it comes to winning...
If I feel the Broncos aren’t the smart pick, I’ll pick against them…Bragging rights over those guys usurps team affiliation! :o)

right
But for me, I think it’s more like an eternal la-la-land (to borrow the phrase) feeling that I have that makes me “feel” like the Broncos can win each and every game no matter the circumstance. I remember one of the few times I picked against the Broncos was Week 16 in SD of 2005, when we were resting all their starters in meaningless game for us… and guess what, we won! I was so pissed… ;)

I got screwed on that one as well!

I AGREE
I will pick the Broncos to win every game this year, ALA the patriots last year.

I feel its bad mojo to pick against them…

I think the Cards will
be the big let down. They can’t help but screw people who believe in them.

That was a really hard game to pick
thing is, even a rampant pessimist would still roll with the cards when you handicap that game… They are like a poor man’s version of the Chargers: lots of talent that keeps coming up short…

I feel bad for the franchise...
great stadium, ideal location in my opinion, and it’s not like they can’t attract talent. But for whatever reason they continue to under perform.

Can we try and pick who wins the pool?
I pick Styg.
If I’m right, do I get a prize?
1-0.

If I had to pick
one of the “sure thing” games up above to be a letdown, I would lean towards the cards or the seahawks. I’m really interested to see if that seattle team can reorganize their offense and get some production out of their defense and hold onto the division crown. That division could get ugly this year… uglier than normal anyways….

Special teams gave up 21 points
24 if you count a field goal the Bill’s were given after a terrible punt. The Hawk D was fine.

I'll take your word
normally I get to see the seahawks, but this opening week was a disaster for me. I saw NOTHING. (sniff)
I am starting their D in fantasy this week, so I hope you are right.

I'm not saying they would have won that game
Taylor was pretty disappointing (although I’m holding out hope) and their o-line, outside of Walt, was dominated (to be fair, Rob Sims was playing with a torn pec). Special teams was an absolute disaster though, punt return for a TD, fumble on a punt that led to a TD, fake field goal for a TD, and a punter that didn’t kick the ball farther than 30 yards once.
The hawk’s D is always a good play when they’re at home though.

While I love this idea and will refer to it often… I just can’t see leaving that last slot in there as “Guru’s wife”. I am certain we could do something entertaining to come up with an appropriate alias… perhaps if we got to know her better? Might we have a one-on-one interview, or even better, a “He said, She said” type of deal… as I am certain she can give us insight to the character of our Guru we would never be likely to obtain otherwise.
Just a thought = )

literally it means “devotion to Guru”….

I don't think she will go for bhakti
regardless of spelling. Besides, she is properly identified as Melissa. I do like the interview idea though.

Guru's wife is into sports
but her pick em’s are other worldly. If any of you saw her NCAA bracket this year it was eerie.

I will
Take the Pats over the Bretts. I think Cassel will do fine, and NE is a better team than NY. Heck if Ginn was any type of WR he would have fought for the ball at the end of the game and Miami would have won. Please oh please let Favre throw another prayer like he did for his 2nd TD against Mia, that will be picked by the Pats. Everyone thinks NE is done, but dont count them out so fast

I picked the Jets
based on a statistical anomaly where a backup QB who comes in on his first start tends to lose. Not all the time but it is a strong trend.
I figure it applies in spades to a literally lifelong backup who won’t get a chance to practice with all of his receivers for the full week.
But long term, I expect that the Patriots will be able to absorb this bump in the road and compete for their division crown, just like always.
If I was a betting man, I would take a pass on this game, and wait for better information to go on next week….

I was listening
to the radioand that idiot JT the Brick had some handicapper on last night and he predicted an outright win for the pats. He used the same thing you did, about the back up seemingly failing, He quoted that thats a misconception. Now, I am not sure if he was relating it to covering or winning outright. That being said, I feel this is a rivalry game, and Billy is out to prove he shut down the ingrate that is QB’s the Jets. Plus to me its just a feeling. The same feeling I have on Sunday in Denver. I think Denver is gonna beat the Chargers pretty good. 34-21

I have a feeling Cassell might be an adequate backup.
I also think the Jets will overachieve this year because of the Favre hype.

WELL ZAPPA
looks like you have the early lead! I wasn’t really surprised that the Gurus wife has the advantage on him! Ya’ll know how wives are. (sorry 4 the DIG G) Besides, it is still a young season. I’m looking at MD’s picks this week and thinking that he is the one who will always “buck the trend”. Gurus wife picked the paitriots against the Jets, because she Knows that if they win, she is going to be able to RAGG the guru for a whole week about that pick! LOL. This is an excellent segment to the entertainment that we get here, as fans of “THE MIGHTY BRONCO’S”!

I thought styg and HT bucked the trend last week and paid the heavy price for it.
We’ll see how it plays out this week. :)
