Around SBN: Falcons and Chargers Recap: The Win Is The Thing Bar-right-arrows

On controversy, cojones, and conversions

OK, the Chargers got jobbed on the fumble call.  No argument there, but if they had won on that play, it would have been because of a fluky, untouched fumble.  In other words, it would not have indicated any semblance of Chargers superiority.  Instead of losing on a weird fluky play, they didn't lose on another weird fluky play.  By the way, the Champ Bailey play in the 1st quarter was not as clear to me as it was to Randy Cross.  I thought that was very close.

The sequence following the fumble was really compelling.  The key play-call to securing the win was the draw to Selvin Young on 3rd and Goal from the 10.  Watching it, I thought it was brilliant, because I'd rather have one shot to score on 4th down, and leave 24 seconds on the clock, than I would take 2 shots into the end zone from the 10, with a minute to go.  I think the probabilities are better, given the abysmal defense seen from both teams today.  The call on 4th down was very smart, but really, par for the course of the game.

As for going for two, that was a function of job security and aggressiveness.  Mike Shanahan is not going to get fired if they miss on the conversion, and he knows it.  The only other coaches in the NFL who could make that call are Bill Belichick and Tony Dungy, and Belichick is the only one who would consider actually doing it.  These are decisions that win championships.  In all likelihood, the Broncos won the AFC West today.  At a minimum, they greatly enhanced their chances of doing so.

Some other assorted observations:

1. Our offensive line is outstanding in pass protection.  Clady is obvious, but I'm extremely impressed with Ryan Harris on the right side.  He is better than at least half the the LTs in the League, and he has the chance to be the best RT in the NFL in pass protection.

2. We have one of the elite offenses in the League.  Also, we have the best young offensive talent in the League (Cutler, Young, Hall, Hillis, Marshall, Royal, Scheffler, Clady, Harris, Lichtensteiger.)  That is an outstanding nucleus for the future.

3.  I love the use of the spread-out shotgun look that we saw so much of today.  It creates good matchups for our playmakers.

4.  Speaking of playmakers, Brandon Marshall abused the Chargers secondary today, with the somewhat overrated Antonio Cromartie (great ball skills, mediocre coverage skills) getting the worst of it.

5.  Further speaking of playmakers, I wonder if Jeremy Green would enjoy a nice cold glass of "Shut The *&^% Up."  He's the one who seemingly continues to believe that we don't have any playmakers, and voted us 23rd in the ESPN Power Rankings, even after the destruction of the Raiders.  I'm anxious to see where he has us this week.  Probably 22nd.

6.  I loved Selvin Young tonight.  I generally slightly prefer him to Andre Hall, but he was outstanding tonight.

7.  Michael Pittman has been a nice role player too.  He made a great contribution.

8.  Darren Sproles is a bad, bad man.  He made plays that LDT couldn't make.

9.  SD has an outstanding offense, but our defense obviously needs to be better.  We have a good opportunity to start this week.

10. A win is a win.  The end.

Pittman, though a fantasy vulture

Our RB stats in that game...

Throw out Selvin’s 49 yarder and here’s how the RBs’ stats look:

Selvin Young 7 carries, 29 yards
Michael Pittman 7 carries, 30 yards
Andre Hall 7 carries, 31 yards

That’s some consistency right there. And I agree; I thought Selvin looked the best today. I wonder what it’ll be like when Torain comes back.

2-0.

The Chargers did get screwed - BUT

Simply stated – make a stop on defense.

4th down – Touchdown to Royal. Where was the defense?
2 pt conversion – converted by Royal. Where was the defense?

If I was I Charger fan – I’d be angry too – but they had TWO chances to make stops from close in on the goal line – and they gave up 39 freaking points. 39! No real football fan who KNOWS THE GAME would complain about one bad call by the referees knowing their defense gave up 39 freakin’ points – and had TWO CHANCES to make game-winning stops on defense.

My two cents.

Exactly.

I made that point in another post.

The Chargers got jobbed on the call, but ultimately they only had to stop a 2pt conversion attempt and were unable to do it. That is why they lost, the call just helped.

Agreed

and I heard Rivers after the game mention that it shouldn’t have come down to that anyway.

What happened

to preseason Harris? with all the mental errors? I’m not complaining :D

Also, I’m sure Green will have us ranked 43rd somehow, with SD and oakland ranked in the top-10.

A Couple things I took from this game in terms of both these teams...

1.)I’ve got all the confidence in he world that Denver is moving in the right direction
2.)If the chargers can keep this thing together it’s going to be a great rivalry for the forseeable future
3.)The Rivers/Cutler Rivalry will also be a great one if both teams can reach and maintain being a top tier team in this league.
4.)Darren Sproles is not as big of a downgrade from M. Turner at the backup running back as many would like to believe.
5.)Tolbert brings an extra element that Lorenzo Neal did not…the ability to do something with the ball
6.)Brandon Marshall is the best reciever in the League
7.)Ed Hochuli is human…but remember, he could still kick your ass
8.)The AFC West is the best offensive division in the league through 2 weeks…and that is with only two teams actually playing

I agree with all of the above

I’m still not sure if I believe B-Marsh is the league’s BEST, but he is without-a-doubt top-10. I would say that our WR corps is the best in the league, however, after seeing Royal do great two weeks in a row… he doesn’t make mistakes! He just makes great, smart football plays.

He and B-Marsh should’ve both been first round WRs but it looks like we got a nice discount on both :D

The Marshall statement may be a bit premature, but not by much and I don't think it's long before his is.

Your right...................

B-Marsh might not be the best in the league, he’s the best in the world. LOL I might be exagerating and biased but name me 5 who are better right now. I know he aint no T.O. because he’s 10 times better than T.O. But seriously name me 5 receivers who are better than B-Marsh right now.

The player who thinks he can and the player who knows he can are two different players, which one are you???

by Broncofan on Sep 14, 2008 8:36 PM MDT to parent up   0 recs

hmm

Well, all of these will be debatable… and you asked for “better,” not more complete… so I’ll start with:

1. Randy Moss
2. Harrison when healthy
3. Plax (yeah, I’m getting desperate…)
4. Steve Smith (CAR)
5. Braylon Edwards
6. Marques Colston
7. Andre Johnson
8. Holt (used to be, anyway)
9. Fitzgerald
10. Boldin
11. Calvin Johnson
12. T.O.

All of these are completely debatable, as said earlier.

and no, I didn't go with 12

just to “prove something.” It was just to offer a bunch of maybes.

harrison?

No way Harrison is up there, reggie wayne could make the list though.

Moss and T.O are the only guys who are clearly above Marshall still (though I agree this will probably change).
Holt and Andre Johnson are both up there ahead of Marshall too I think, just on horrible teams.
Fitzgerald, Colston, Edwards, Smith, Wayne are all debatable to me.
Boldin and Burress are a clear step below imho.
Calvin Johnson doesn’t even belong in the conversation yet.

Adding in Marshall’s youth, you could definitely make the case that starting from scratch, he’d be the first WR picked going forward. And I think top 5 presently is not a stretch.

Andre Johnson is the best WR in the NFL right now.

Where did you get that “President Bush Dance” video you posted during the game?

Victor Frankl:

What man actually needs is not a tensionless state but rather the striving and struggling for some goal worthy of him. What he needs is not the discharge of tension at any cost, but the call of a potential meaning waiting to be fulfilled by him.

Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.

Definitely

We lead the league in points for, and San Diego is only behind us and Green Bay in that stat. There are some serious offenses in our division…

I’ve been saying we are a top 5 offense, but after tonight i think you could make a case for us being the best offense in the league – we just have so many playmakers that it’s almost impossible to stop our passing game; and that has a lot to do with the stellar offensive line play that we have had. Who would have thought that both a rookie and second year player at tackle would be so solid. I am excited about the rest of this season!

My thoughts

Granted, a bad call, but the right call, and if SD is going to whine about it then that’s their problem. Fact is this isn’t the first bad break that SD has had and it won’t be the last, whenever you have an imperfect system, there are bound to be errors. Sometimes the ball bounces to you and sometimes it bounces away. But I agree, if you don’t wnat this to be an issue then stop the Denver offense.

I tend to disagree, about the riveraly with SD, I really see this team imploding this year. Norv Turner is not a leader of men, he is a coordinator, here’s the thing, if the roles were reversed, would Norv go for two or play it safe, you all know the answer.

That is the real difference that I see between the Chargers and Broncos, they are both young and talented, and both have holes, but I would take the leadership of Shannan, Cutler over Turner and Phylis any day of the week.

The thing that I saw today was Jay Cutler came of age, yes he threw a bad pick, but when the chips were on the line he made the plays and his team rallied around him. SD without Sproles would of lost by 3 TD, he is obviously a very talented player, and SD is a talented team, but everything that has been made about Denver getting rid of bad apples and getting leaders in the group, showed up today.

I agree with most posts, in that our LB corps looked poor and we need a pass rush, Moss and Crwoder need to start producing or hit the door after this year.

That 2 point conversion was only the 3rd for a win instead of a tie since it was instituted in 1994. I thought that was interesting, and a little shocking. It also tends to put the exclamation point on any analysis of our current defense.

I'm tired of hearing about money, money, money, money, money. I just want to play the game, drink Pepsi, wear Reebok.

I was a little worried by the lack

of enthusiasm the team showed in the 2nd half. Also the fact that we didn’t bury SD in the first have bothers me a lot. The defense and the special teams basically asked SD to get within striking distance. I’m assuming that “killer instinct” that makes a team kick the opponent while they’re down is something that the younger players will have to learn. Hopefully they did today.

But other than that, what’s with SD’s second string RBs destroying us? I got excited when we would stop LT only to have Burner Turner, or this year Sproles, take over and torch us.

Another trend, our receivers seem really good at pissing off other team’s corners. Last week with MeAngelo’s 2 personal fouls and this week with Cromartie’s. But I could use more of that. That’s a trend I like.
