Places to improve
First off, I don't mean this post in a negative spirit, our Broncos beat the defending division champs and are now two games up on them. Cutler and the offense looked astoundingly good at times. We have not only one of the best offenses in the league, we have one of the youngest as well.
That said, there were a number of ways I think this team can improve on both sides of the ball:
Offense
1. Run the ball: One of the most frustrating aspects of this game to me was how little we ran the ball. Especially when we are up like that, run the clock down, wear the opponent down. Our backs ran for 6 yards per carry all told, no reason for the huge run/pass differential in this one since we lead most of the game.
2. Too much spread: I don't mind the spread sometimes, there were just too many plays, especially in the 3rd quarter where we had an empty backfield. There's no reason not to make the defense at least think about the run, even if they're going to run.
3. Get Cutler some gloves or something: Pretty self-explanatory, but he just dropped the the ball for no reason at least twice in good weather. This can't happen.
Defense
1. Hide the blitz better: Our blitzes were successful at getting through their O-line, but Phyllis almost always got the ball out ok. I think this was largely because our blitzes were real obvious. Almost every time we showed blitz, we bltized. And I don't remember any blitzes that weren't telegraphed.
2. Stay at home: Way too many big plays, often the result of overpursuit by Boss and others. The big Sproles catch stands out in particular. All three LBs were running full speed to the left while the play was going the other way.
3. Paymah sucked: Just like with Foxworth, Paymah gave way too much cushion pretty routinely. I have to think this is mostly coaching and can be worked on. He struggled beyond just the cushion issue, but I don't know what else specifically to do better in other areas
Special Teams
1. Pitch a shutout: Other than the Sproles return, I actually thought the special teams acquitted themselves pretty well. But that doesn't matter that much if you give up a TD.
I'm sure I'm missing plenty of thing, especially on defense, what do you all think? What can the team do to get better as the year goes on?

I agree on most points, but
I’m not going to question the spread or any other formation calls considering how well they worked. Maybe it was a reaction to how well the Chargers had stopped our runners the past couple of years, maybe it was a prediction of a shootout and the necessary points, or maybe our passing game is our strength in the same way our rushing game used to be. But I can’t complain about 39 points, no matter how you get ’em.
Good points though.

I was surprised
by how much gun/4-5 wide we ran, too. I don’t know that last time a Broncos QB had 50 (or whatever Jay had) pass attempts.

John Elway in 1985
Against SD the game where Louis Wright returned the blocked FG for a TD. Elway was 28/50 for 261 1 td and 2 picks.

Not much
miss-direction, few roll-outs for Cutler- that’s what helps keep defenses honest and guessing. While the spread did work, I too believe too much of it eventually give the opposing defense the advantage of not having to honor the run.

Fully agreed on the STs coverage. For the most part, they’ve been very good the last couple of games and I’ve been impressed by Larsen in particular. However, against Oakland we let Higgins slip through for 60 yards. Here, we let Sproles through for a TD almost untouched. I think the wedge busting unit needs a little more work…I like how the STs are fired up but they’ve got to be a little more patient, especially with a good returner back there. And, as we saw in the game, the kick return really sparked SD, especially on offence. We can’t allow the opposition to get such massive momentum boosts.
I agree that we should have controlled the ball more…I think part of it was to show the rest of the league that we are a serious team and can score at will against almost any defence as well as a little bit of revenge against the Chargers.
Agreed with all the D points as well, I can’t help but think about how Foxworth might have done in such a situation. I also hope we go back to incorporating bits of Coyer’s scheme, especially using show blitz and dropping the guys back into coverage.

Time for the rebuttal
All of the concerns are valid IF we continue to do the same thing all season. However, this might be an effort to bait opponents into a false sense of security regarding what we run. All of the blitzes and the spread might have been so prominent in order to get them on tape so opponents think they know what to expect. Remember, Shanahan has been around a long time.

What? 150 yards a game isn't enough rushing for you?

1-2 ratio not enough for me
Cutler had 50 pass attempts vs. 24 rushing attempts for the team, with a big lead. Running was working too, 6ypc. The bigger issue to me though was how often we used a formation with no one in the backfield and let them not even worry about us running.

He isn't down on the team.
He’s being a good coach. Always look for areas of improvement. I like the premise.

It could also be Shanahan flexing the full playbook for the first time in a decade.
Much like coming off the crutches after a broken leg, it’s gotta feel great to sprint out to the parking lot when walking would suffice. Especially if you happen to come off the crutches and realize you can immediately run at full strength.

I am happy
I dont get all the crap about the running game? Almost 300 yards rushing in 2 game. Unless people are not happy with no 100 yard game by a back, yet. So who cares. The running game is good, the OL kicks serious booty. The offense is awesome. Maybe the defense played a bad game or maybe they played against a real good offense. I think the latter, Rivers is a douche but a good QB. Remember this is a new defense again. Its only 2 games in and the Broncos are 2-0 with a 2 game lead on SD. I feel there are things the defense can do better, as always but why bitch about a win?

The run game
I’m thinking that this very good, but young, O line, that hasn’t played much together, and therefore not so much with the RB’s, has been very good at pass blocking, but is still a work in progress in the run game. I know, 150 yards a game is very good, but it’s gonna get even better.

exactly
plus, you gotta call the plays they are giving you. I have no doubt that the coaches are simply calling hte best play for the situation at this point, without favor for ratio. A more balanced game that doesn’t turn into a barnburner may be the first time we see the ratio explicitly favored.
I will say that I think the bog down came because we were trying to establish the run to wear down the clock, which is where I think the impression of a “poor” run game comes from. When we needed it to protect a lead, it disappeared on us. On the same note, if we are passing on those plays, the game gets even longer. To a certain extent, I think coaches can accept a drive that takes some time off, even if it isn’t necessarily a successful drive.
I blame a philosophy that thought 3rd quarter was a good time to protect a lead. Did they really think they were that much better than the Chargers??

Bushwah.
Excellent premise, and recommended!
I agree with you. It’s easy to blow up the score board with points, and want to enjoy the win. But you raise excellent points. Several of your points are things the team needs to look at.
For example, it sure would be nice to rack up a nice score, then just run the ball down their throats. We let Rivers on the field far too much, and they were able to rack up the score too. With a good running game, we could still score, but eat clock. Yes, yes folks; we had solid YPCs. But Bushwah’s point is that we didn’t run the ball very much, and we could have. The game might not have been so close. (Imagine if we had run well and often in the third quarter?)
I also buy several other points, such as the need to disguise blitzes. The game shouldn’t have been as close as it was.
Bushwah, you have a good coaching tendancy. That is, don’t sit back on a win and feel proud. Instead, look for areas of improvement. What you’ve done is by no means a condemnation of the team, and don’t let folks make you feel it is.

my 3-pronged recipe for ultimate success
1. special teams- cover and tackle(no big returns, champ heroics)
2. defense- blitz and tackle(no long pass plays,50-yard screens)
3. offense- rush for td’s and eating the clock(no picks/fumbles at the goal-line, less 1+ 2)
simple, yet delicious
