Tales from the SunnySide: Proverbs

Proverb

Part of Speech:

noun

Definition:

A usually pithy and familiar statement expressing an observation or principle generally accepted as wise or true.

Synonyms:

adage, aphorism, byword, maxim, motto, saw, saying

From the Associated Press article, “Chiefs RB Johnson unhappy with reduced role in offense”:

The Chiefs were once a dominating running team, pounding opponents with huge offensive linemen and talented running backs like Johnson, Priest Holmes and Christian Okoye.

Kansas City isn't that team anymore, those linemen replaced by inexperienced youngsters, the running game nearly nonexistent. The Chiefs managed just 1,248 yards rushing a year ago -- 541 less than Johnson had in 2006 -- and have averaged a paltry 3.41 yards on 46 carries this season.

Looking at the above blurb, it’s easy to see where the aphorism lies. Everyone knows that an inexperienced front line for the offense is a weakness. Everyone knows that such lines are suspect, fragile of psyche and prone to weakness and lapses. Everyone, of course, except Mike Shanahan, which is why the Broncos are now 2-0.

I read it over and over this summer: “The Bronco's inexperienced offensive line…” blah, blah, blah. Some, of course, like Jeremy Green were of the opinion that the Broncos were too old but for the rest, the lack of years at those positions harkened to future problems, issues and concerns. Happily, Shanahan, and the nearly prescient Goodmans were far from interested in other people’s opinions.

“I guarantee we’re going to be in the playoffs this year,” Coach insisted. Not a lot of people disbelieve him tonight.

What did he see that other people didn’t see? I don’t know the specifics, but I do know this. Three preseason games, two regular season games, 1 sack. It’s the only thing, in a lot of ways, that really matters.

What it means for Broncos fans is that for the next 7 to 10 years or so, Clady, Hamilton, Kuper and Harris are probably going to be the rock upon which many NFL ships are going to break. Steiger may give up a promising career as a goal line fullback to play guard or center in the Broncos offensive attack, and I hope that he’s a perfect a fit as Clady and Harris are. Because if he is, it could be nearly 10 years before we will need to do more than fill out our line depth ala Weigman or Polumbus.

And that is leaving me with a small, secret smile tonight. Those men are protecting our next Super Bowl QB like he’s the Denver Mint. Which, in a lot of ways, he is. And Mr. Cutler is using his time very wisely and carving defensive lines into sushi. Which, for the yuppified folks of San Diego, is perfectly fitting.

Fun Fact: Over the past 14 years, Denver has outscored all other NFL teams in the 1st quarter.
