Report from the Game
Here now, my take on what I'm sure everyone was waiting to hear: just how good was the half-time entertainment, Antigravity?
I can honestly say: it was okay. Those odd jumping boot thingies were interesting, and we got to see a new world record set on consecutive backflips using them. History, folks. Then they had four guys, two trampolines, and a wall. Fun to watch, overall.
Other than that, it was a pretty tame afternoon. *twitch, twitch*
My voice is gone, and I nearly took today off to recover. I have never, NEVER been in a stadium going as berserk as INVESCO Mile High after the 2-point conversion. Here are my REAL thoughts after the game.
Keep in mind the following. We were at the top of the stadium. Literally. No one behind us. Great for seeing the field, not so great for fine detail. I have read little and seen less on the controversial plays. Therefore, I don't have much to add on those plays.
- Jay Cutler wa a little too amped up at the end of the game. I believe this game as personal, and he was trying just a bit too hard. The interception and "fumble" seemed to be results of Jay pressing more than he should of. I don't expect to see those mistakes very often.
- Sproles' return for a TD changed the game. Before that point, the crowd was going crazy. After that, it took awhile to bring the noice back up. Without that return, the Broncos roll the Chargers.
- There were some shaky calls going both ways. I added a new "how can they not call the block in the back?!?!?!" incident to my memory, right up there with some of Dante Hall's returns.
- I was disappointed in Prater's lack of touchbacks. I was expecting more in the thin air. A 52-yard field goal will earn some forgiveness, however.
- Kerns' few punts looked great. Great distance, and pinned the returner into a corner. Special teams aren't there yet, but they're improving.
- The defense needs to find ways of getting off the field on 3rd and more-than-three.
- On many of the painful long receptions, one name kept showing up (to me, at least): Karl Paymah. I could be wrong, but it seemed like SD found the weak spot and kept attacking it. Not sure if this was bad play by Paymah or...
- ...the lack of pressure on Rivers. I kept hoping for it. I kept praying for it. It never came. We're in for a heart burn-inducing season if the QBs have that much time all season. We are saved by...
- ...the offense. It is for real. I can't speak highly enough of the offensive line. Others have mentioned this, but a line that young should not be playing that well. The play calling is...crazy. The receiving talent is incredible. And given time, Jay Cutler will dissect any defense.
One little story, just to re-emphasize how draining that game was. Crowd is off the hook after Eddie gets the 2-pt conversion. In the middle of that, I'm the first person around to notice we have a man down...and I'm pretty sure it's Eddie. The crowd slowly starts to go quiet...just in time for Eddie to jump up, pump his fists, and start the party over again. That should be it...only, there's still 24 seconds on the clock, Broncos only lead by 1...and we have to kick to Sproles. Stomaches tighten up again, and they won't relax for another five minutes or so (the solid ST stop helped a bit).
I won't forget this game, and I doubt anyone else (SD fans included) will either.

Just a Reminder here...
The Chargers found Paymah and exploited him…Paymah, our 3rd on the depth chart CB. We found and exploited Cromartie, the Chargers 1st on the depth chart CB. Big difference in my opinion, even though the results were the same.
I agree, Cutler looked way too amped up and I think he finally calmed down the last couple of plays there. This game was hugely personal for him and no one on that field wanted a WIN more than Jay freakin’ Cutler. This victory will do wonders for his confidence this year and I doubt he’ll make the same mistakes Week 17 in San Diego. Confidence is probably as important as talent to winning football games in the NFL, Cutler had zero confidence last year…now he is exuding it. The result, 2-0.

I think it was both Paymah and Bly
Whenever the Chargers needed a big play, seemed like they went that direction, Paymah was abused, I am not sure that Foxworth would have been better, but at least he tackles. But in fairness to Paymah and Bly, there really wasn’t any pass rush by Denver, and seeing how SD was down to a second string tackle and center, we should of been able to exploit that more.

Like you said, a bad pass rush will make anyone look bad.
Paymah looked just like Foxworth on some of those plays. He gave too much cushion and failed to break on the ball, but at least he tackled. I’d personally like to see some more Jack MF Williams out there, but maybe he’s too green.
2-0.

On the last play of the game
Jack MF Williams was in the game and helped McCree knock down the hail-mary pass from Rivers . Also I just watched the replay and it looked like the Chargers got some good ref calls going there way in the game also , The pass to Chambers in the endzone with Paymeh covering looked like he never had control of the ball ( I think it was the 2nd quarter.) Also Cutler took a BIG hit after he threw the ball from #92 ( I think ) that looked like he led with his helmet and was not called—-so it might equal out in the long run

Havent seen the replay yet, but I rememeber
Refs called a chop block on Denver which wasn’t at all. The Olineman went low for a block, but Clady was standing and never touched him for the push. And how about the block in the back which was obvious to everyone but a Zebra.
I think Denver has had a bad rap on Chop Blocking. All the Bronco haters out there say that Denver is notorious for it, even the announcers say it now. I wonder if there is a database to show what teams are called for whichever penalties by the week, month and year.
It would be interesting to see who gets called the most for chop blocking.
I agree on the catch by Chambers, but the ref was right in front of it. It would have been tough to overule.

btw, my field level seats at the Oakland game pales in comparison to your
nose bleed seats in Denver. I’d take those nose bleed seats 100% of the time….man I need to go to a home game! Great post!

Don't get me wrong
I’m not complaining! The co-worker we got the tickets from has had several opportunities to move closer…and has passed them up. I can see why. You still have a great view, but you also get a great view of the Rockies (mountains, not baseball team), and a nifty shelf behind you to put drinks/coats/etc on. I’d take those seats over just about any!

One other point
In general, I think the little isolation quick-pass to a WR is pretty good. It’s really good if you can get the WR-CB isolation, and the WR is Brandon Marshall. It is NOT, however, a good play EVER when the CB is Champ Bailey.
So Norv uses the play once. Okay, fine, just checking to see if Champ is bored yet. Nothing. That should be the end, right? Not if you’re Norv Turner! How can you run that play twice in one game against Champ Bailey?!?! The over-under on yards for both plays combined would have been at 3.5 yards!

I commented on this in the live threads
If you are going to throw a WR screen at one of our CB, why would you pick on Champ (one of the top tackling CB’s) instead of Bly (how many tackles did he miss and overrun in the preseason)? On the flip side, I would have preferred Denver’s WR screen (with the 4 WR in a diamond) go to Royal with Marshall blocking instead of vice versa.
re Prater: The Guru mentioned this on MHR radio after the game and I agree. He got the ball pretty deep into the end zone on most of his kickoffs. A “normal” returned would have taken a knee a couple times, but guys like Sproles, Hester, Cribbs etc are gonna take the chance nad bring them out.
Glad you enjoyed the game. Thanks for the insights from inside the stadium.

Totally agree
Yeah I have no idea why they wanted to challenge Bailey, and in general I thought Prater did well, granted the Sproles kickoff return wasn’t out of the end zone, but it was in the end zone and most guys would take a knee.

I have read reports on why they attacked Bailey
we were playing 8 men in the box to stop the run and the only safety help was on Bly’s side , if they did get past Champ there would be noone to stop the receiver from scoring.

Thanks for the report from the scene!!
I know how tough it is and I appreciate the effort and the quality of your observations. This is the stuff you don’t get from the dp or RMN or even ESPN. Thanks again.

Jack Williams?
I wonder if, as the opposing offenses see thqat Paymuh is one of our weaknesses, if Jack W. will get his start a little earlier? If he has to learn by doing, that may not be worse than what is happening with Paymuh
It’s just one game for him, but if it’s a trend I wlll bet that Shanahan will make that change.

By the end of the game...
…I was having the same thoughts. I can’t say for sure if the problems lie chiefly with Paymah, but if they did, I’d expect to see Jack Williams start to get more playing time.

If the Jack WIlliams > Paymah switch is inevitable,
it might be that Shanahan wanted to get through the Chargers game first. New Orleans is next, but starting Williams in week 4 against Kansas City would be ideal for him.

I hate you, L.T.
Your Chargers put 38 points up against my Broncos and you didn’t get ONE of them for my fantasy team.
Not that I was even thinking about it while we were there. Holy highlights that was an amazing first Broncos game at Inve Mile High! My heart is still fluttering.

i noticed
in oakland we used a lot more trickery(i.e. reverses and WR passes) than we did against san diego. ALSO how awesome was youngs 49 yard run and cutlers blocking is amazing he got selvin 15 more yards on that play

FWIW
I believe Cutler also had the tackle (that wasn’t) after the fumble (that wasn’t). It won’t show up on any stats, but one replay showed him with good tackling form.

I like Cutler's block on that run by Young's long run (I'm sure it was that one)
