Things my eyes saw, and my brain thought - Week 2 Edition, part A
I'm still in the process of watching every game in its entirety (Directv's Short Cuts is well worth the 99 bucks.) For now, some notes on things I already saw and thought.
1. Brett Favre is worth 4 wins to the Jets. It's just not the 4 wins people think, because he's the difference between 4-12 and 8-8. Their Offensive Line is not good, and it's appropriate to start calling D'Brickashaw Ferguson a bust at this point. The play-calling is unimaginative, which is shocking from a coordinator with the Schottenheimer name.
2. The Patriots will be home underdogs against the Broncos. They're suddenly a close-to-the-vest team, and their defense will have nothing for the Broncos' offense. The game with the Jets was very short (23 minutes to show every play in the Short Cut,) and I am sure that was part of the Belichick strategy. They'll be okay against teams that don't throw it well (Deltha O'Neal as a #1 CB?) The Broncos, Chargers, and Colts will crush them, though.
3. Speaking of the Patriots, why don't teams pay attention to Kevin Faulk when he lines up in the shotgun? He's a killer, and he's been doing it for about 10 years now.
4. I'm a lover of big plays that go unmentioned, and Tim Jennings (#23) of the Colts should take a bow. He made a suberb play to get his hand up quickly and prevent a punt from going into the end zone, and then down it at the 1. That play was enormous, because if Minnesota gets it at the 20, they are not nearly as conservative as they are from the 1. The resulting field position gave Peyton Manning the chance he needed to make the play to Reggie Wayne.
5. I told you last week that the Jaguars can't pass-protect. It turns out that they can't run-block much either, missing all those guards to injury. They're stout against the run on defense, but it is difficult to imagine them winning more than 6 games this season with that terrible offensive line. David Garrard hasn't played well yet, either.
6. Trent Edwards impressed me Sunday, and I am not naturally inclined to be a fan of a guy like him. I like strong-armed/athletic guys like JP Losman. He's an average-armed, average athlete, with above average poise and feel for the game. The Bills are for real, and will win the AFC East this season.
7. I'm happy for Domenik Hixon, who looks like a good football player in New York. I don't think he'd play much in Denver, but I'm glad he's having success somewhere else.
8. Miami's defense is terrible.
9. That doesn't mean anybody should sleep on Arizona, who is going to get double-digit victories for the first time since 1975. They'll win the NFC West, and not by default. Ken Whisenhunt made a great call going with Kurt Warner, and it jumps off the screen how hard the team is playing for them.
10. Most of my local friends here are Cleveland Browns fans, and they wouldn't like this if they looked at MHR. The Browns are not ready for prime time, which is problematic since they have an NFL-high 5 appearances on prime time TV this season. It seems like Braylon Edwards is trying to assist Derek Anderson in his own admirable efforts to get the Brady Quinn era underway. The right side of the Cleveland Offensive Line looked horrible last night, and they can't cover anybody in the secondary. They look like a 6-10 team right now, considering the schedule they play.
11. Pittsburgh is not as good as advertised either. They're going to get Ben Roethlisberger killed one of these days. It's no small accomplishment to have the worst pass-protection in the NFL, but I think Pittsburgh wins that award. Of course, the MSM is not hip to this yet, but they'll catch up to me, eventually. By then, I'll be on to something else, though.
12. My opinion of Carson Palmer was only strengthened by what I saw Sunday. I think he's finished as a good quarterback, because he does not have adequate mobility for what he is asked to do. Mike Lombardi agreed today on Nationalfootballpost.com.
13. Sometimes, a Tampa-2 scheme is not just a Tampa-2 scheme. The Bucs play it better than the Lions, and Matt Ryan had a really hard time. TB dropped a safety into the box a lot, essentially showing a 46 presnap look with zone principles, which is a very smart thing to do against Atlanta. Expect everybody to do that to Ryan, until he proves he can beat it. As a side note, he has the arm of a 3rd round pick, and struggles to get it to the sideline with any velocity.
14. Brian Griese has become a pretty good team guy over the years, and Jeff Garcia is totally a me-first guy. I suspect that this is at the core of the change in Tampa, because Garcia is definitely more talented.
15. It's kind of amazing how durable Warrick Dunn has been in his career. As I watch Chris Johnson, I think he has a very bright future if he learns how to avoid big hits the way Dunn always has. That's a skill set that can be learned, making yourself small at the opportune time. He is one hell of a dynamic playmaker, in any case.
16. I am beginning to think Reggie Bush has some LDT in him, in a negative way. Despite the best efforts of his marketing people, LDT has always shown signs of being kind of a boorish jerk, with both his comments and his body language. Bush is even more heavily marketed, and maybe more of a jerk. Brees missed him on a 3rd and short swing pass, and Bush threw a tantrum afterward. Also, the waving on the touchdown is Bush league. He needs to grow up.
17. Could it be that the Redskins have figured out that Jason Campbell can only play in a vertical passing game? He lacks rhythm and feel for the timing game.
18. The play-by-play guy in the Bucs-Falcons game called a stiff-arm a "stiffie." I hope nobody at the FCC gets too upset about it.
19. Deion Sanders had it pegged last night on NFL Network, when he said playing Kansas CIty was like Homecoming. They may be winless heading into Week 16, knowing they have Miami at home and Cincinnati on the road, to avoid being the first 0-16 team ever. Those strike me as KC's only winnable games.
20. Oakland was better, but they can't beat a good team if they can't throw the football. They and Seattle have the worst receiving corps in the NFL right now.
21. JT O'Sullivan can't play at the NFL level. The best thing I can find to say about him is that he has average accuracy and mobility. In terms of arm strength, touch, poise, and feel for the game, he looks way below average.
22. It's going to get lost in the shuffle, because Seattle is suddenly a bad offensive football team, but John Carlson is a very impressive rookie tight end. Matt Hasselbeck clearly doesn't trust the receivers he's throwing to, and his eye level is really low, like he's watching the pass rush. He looks very Derek Anderson-like.
More to follow once I watch a few more games.....

#16. "Bush league"
Nice. Hope that’ll catch on. If it already hasn’t; I tend to be slow on the uptake on those kinds of things.

#19 kind of makes me sad.
Going to school today was depressing, all the sullen looks on the people’s faces… I think only two teachers participated in the “Red Friday” last, um, Friday, and it showed. Getting tickets to the Broncos game in a couple of weeks was incredibly easy; the easiest it’s ever been for me to get tickets. I hope Shanny can keep the guys motivated to play them, because that’s the only way we could lose that game. I really feel for the Chiefs fans, including half my family. I just can’t imagive being that bad…
You’re right on about the Colts game. Their defense and special teams really turned it on in the fourth quarter, and they set up Peyton Manning to get the win. What a demoralizing loss for the Vikings, though. They played well the whole game and now they have to start 0-2.
A note on the 0-2 teams: Last year, the Giants went 0-2, and they rebounded to, um, win the Super Bowl. So don’t count it out, Chargers, Vikings, Browns, Jaguars…
My last question has to do with the NFL game in England, whenever that is. Would any of you guys like to see the Broncos overseas? I’d hate to lose a home game because of a trip to Europe.
2-0.

I would say no
Pre-season ok, in 1990 I say denver play seattle in Tokyo. And got see Elway on the USS Midway (CV-41) when he came to the US Naval Base in Yokosuka, Japan. Denver won 10-7

Wasn't that the game where TD made that big hit on special teams and got noticed?

No
this was 5 years earlier. The one you are thinking of is when SF played Denver and TD made that great tackle. I wasnt at that one. But it was played in the same place the Tokyo dome or as the locals call it the Big Egg. Looks like one from the outside. Elway is hugely (or was when I was there) popular in Japan

I agree with on Palmer now
I was kind of critical of your response on Palmer last week, but after this week I must say you are spot on, and I repsect your good eye on that. I was wrong on him and acknowldge that. Plus it doesnt help that it seems to me that team has already quit, and the season is 2 games old. BTW where is hurricane or whatever Chand Johnson said he was gonna bring. I am glad I am a Bronco fan and dont have to watch the Ohio or Missouri pro teams play. Those 2 states are a pitiful 0-8, and not really close in any game

Question on the recommends..
I rec’d it about five minutes ago, but it’s still not showing up. I’ve also seen a couple of comments show up on my screen after it says they were posted. Does it usually take that long, or is my computer or the site just being a little buggy today?

I think our defense is improved, really
The Chargers have a great offense, and they made some big plays. I don’t think what we saw yesterday was a true indication of the quality of either defense. I think both defenses are league-average, and both offenses are excellent.
I can’t think of very many teams that can score enough to keep up with the Broncos. In fact, only two on our schedule come to mind, and that is New Orleans this weekend, and San Diego in December. New Orleans is flat-out awful in pass defense, and just got carved up by an average Washington offense. San Diego is trouble, but that’s very far down the road. Every other game on our schedule, the Broncos should be able to win, just by keeping up this level of Offensive efficiency. When you score on 2/3 of your possessions, you’re really good on Offense. They remind me of the Indianapolis Colts of the early 2000s, where the Offense was unstoppable, and the defense was good enough to win with that kind of Offense. This is probably no way to win a Super Bowl, but once you get in the playoffs, you never know what might happen. I’m optimistic.

I am with you 100%
I am prepared for Denver to allow around 24 points this week. But seeing Colston is out I think NO will try and controll the clock and run the ball. Or at the worst use a short passing game to controll the clock with Bush. I dont see that working well. I also think Denver will be able to move the ball quite easliy against the Saints.
I also remember the 1999 Rams who could score at will and their defense was in the bottom 2/3s of the NFL and won a title.

Ihaven't watched the recording yet:
But didn’t two SD scores come on ST? Even if it was only one – we win the game if Scottie O’Brien gets his act and plaers together. Several arfe rookies and need to learn the pro game, but even so – our D needs help, but look at the 1st half score, take away the ST scores, and you have a respectable performace agains a great team’s O.

Silver...you are so negative.
Back in the Craig Morton days we had something similar happen—and I’m not sure if it was with Craig or one shortly after. This is from memory and involved either Cleveland or the Saints…age has given me another mental block. Anyway, we were only known for our defense back then (and a great defense it was)—yet the final scores (for both teams I think) was in the low 50’s. Somehow a shootout got started and got out of control. That is what happened yesterday—which is why I love this team—before the shoot-out started we had the game won. Once a shoot-out starts (with two good offenses involved) defenses have no chance (all rules over the last thirty years favor the offense) that is what happened yesterday. What our team did wrong was thinking the game was over after the half—Belli-cheat understood this last year—I have no ill will scoring again and again—look at just what almost happened to us. Our team took a breather in the third quarter and almost got beat. 13-3 baby………….loved your funny post also.

Not necessarily negative
as brutally realistic. I am a Rockies fan, you see…. At least even when I am being a pessimist, as I do very often on Purple Row, I am able to have a sense of humor about it.
As for the D, it still looks like a work in progress. It’s not as good as it showed against the raiders and not as bad as it showed against the Chargers, and should be able to hold up well against middle-of-the-road teams. But STs are a BIG problem (two games in a row Champ, the last line of defense, had to make a TD-saving tackle) and Higgins almost ripped a kickoff TD return on us in the Oakland game. I need to see better coverage on the kicks, something even slightly resembling a pass rush, and the D to play a team that isn’t as good as the Chargers and not as gawd-frinking-awful as the raiders to judge for sure, I think. I still feel that as good as the offense is, there are still a few too many questions on the D. If they could click into gear, then sure, NOW you’re talkin’.

OK, you put up a good case that we have many questions...
I’ll also give you that we are a ‘no-name’ d-line and ST team. This you must give me however—we are a brand new team that has not had time to grow—a brand new scheme—and memories of last year. Other than Champ…can you think of any that knew they would start? I can’t. Yet, this young team is learning and hopefully getting better.
My next question is can you see a team in the NFL that will with certainty shut down Cutler, Brandon, Stokely, and Royal.
I can’t.
Silver, take a look at our schedule…
13-3 just jumped to15-1 and I think I’m right.

Problem being
(and this is sacrilege, I know…. ) that we might not get shut down so much as shoot ourselves in the foot. Case in point, the last game, there were plenty of opportunities for us to continue drives and/or score, but we kept having silly penalties called on us. Some of those will go away with focus. But (again, sacrilege…) there may come a game when Cutler just Isn’t Right, for whatever reason. He’s throwing off his back foot, his release point is a little wild, the O-line isn’t giving him quite as good protection, someone peed in his cornflakes, etc. In that case, I don’t know if the defense is good enough to win if the offense isn’t up to par. Of course, if we have even some of our weapons firing but not all, that could be something. But still.
New England (even Brady-less) Carolina, Buffalo, San Diego, and possibly even the Jets (depending on circumstances…) represent significant tests left on our schedule. Sure, we have a few cupcakes in the Chiefs twice, the Raiders again, the O-line-less Jaguars, and the Dolphins, but we can’t afford to look past those teams. So I reaaaaallly want to come to La-La Land (it sounds like a great place, the beachfront views are probably the bomb) but I’m still feeling 10-6 or 11-5. Hey, both are better than 7-9.

That NY Bretts will prove to be tough. They are vastly overrated. Their OL is nothing to brag about. I think denver could blow those guys outta the water.

Ye-he-hes....
But the one thing that worries me about the NY Bretts is, well, the Brett. As prone as our D has been to giving up the big pass play, if they don’t get it fixed by then, we could be in for another shootout. Although nothing would be sweeter to me than to see the young gunslinger beat the old gunslinger, of course.

Great post
Very good observations, and I am inclined to believe that Buffalo may be the Eastern Div Prom Queen. That being said, it will be interesting to see Denver vs the Bills in Dec. The end of Denvers season will be a weekly spellbinder in the AFC. With Carolina, Buffalo and SD to finish out the season. December will determine the playoff seeding.
