Colbert Traded to the Seahawks!

Seattle has swapped a late-round draft pick for Broncos wide receiver Keary Colbert, FOXSports.com has learned.

The Seahawks — who had the 17th best pass offense in the league a year ago — have suffered greatly this year with the losses of receivers Nate Burleson, Bobby Engram and Deion Branch to injuries.

Colbert was in his first year with Denver after four seasons with the Panthers. He has 109 career receptions and seven touchdowns, though he has not found the end zone since 2005

I dont mind getting picks for players that are clearly not required on this team.

Good move!

Seattle desperately needs receivers, and we were loaded there with Colbert not likely to see the field anytime soon (especially with Royal with Cheese lighting it up!).

Colbert

Not only have the Seahawks lost Burleson (for the season) , Branch, and Engram, but they alos just lost Logan Payne for the season, and Ben Obomanu for the season, and Seneca Wallace for 4 weeks (Wallace is the back up QB, but was pressed into service as a wide because of all the injuries.
Seahawks were hurting, so maybe we made them pay for Colbert.

As I read

It is expected to be a 6th or 7th rounder…

Seems to me that Foxworth is worth more than Colbert… but what do I know? Both ATL and SEA needed these respective players, but I’d much rather have Foxy on my team than Colbert.

I like this trade

shanny is stockpiling draft picks for the draft. i love that this team is continuing to get younger each year. colbert wasnt playing any so the broncos might as well get value for him. i guess i get what guru was saying about foxy being our 5th corner so we got good value for him in the falcons trade. colbert was our 5th wr and i feel this is good value too.

Doesn't Seattle have D-Lineman we could use?

I’m not familiar with their D-Line, but I would hope we could have gotten someone to help us now (as they did)!

It’s probably too much to ask for their MLB ;-)

What’s not to love with this trade? At first glance we could be hurting if we lose a WR or 2, but if you think about it, we have TEs that can flat out run and catch. Hopefully we got a 5 or 6 for Colbert…he’s worth that much, you just won’t see it because the people in front of him were just WAY WAY better.

See?

This is what bothered me so much about the Foxworth trade. I understand that having Foxworth on the team until now and then trading him would have had a bigger change on team dynamic than trading him when they did, BUT I think that if he was going to be traded, it made sense to wait until someone was desperate.

Also, given how terrible Paymah looked on Chambers on Sunday, I’d say we could have used foxworth this season. I thought we’d see Jack Williams a lot more so far.

Denver signed Colbert to a 3 year deal with a $2.5 million signing bonus

That signing bonus was supposed to be prorated $833,333 in 2008, 2009 and 2010.

By trading him, the proration from 2010 accelerates to 2009 becoming $1,666,667 total (or $833,333 more). So we do take a penalty of $833K in 2009. (As a point of reference, Javon Walker and Gerard Warren combined are costing Denver more than $11 million in cap space this year.)

On the other hand, Denver is not on the hook for his $2 million base salary in 2009 or his $1.5 million base salary in 2010 (plus about $600K in potential bonuses).

We paid him the entire $2.5 million signing bonus up front

But it is prorated for salary cap purposes across the entire life of the contract (in this case 3 years).

When the Seahawks traded for him they took on his contract so they are responsible for any remaining bonuses

Broncos scoring all-around!

I was thinking last week how it would be awesome if we could offer up Colbert to Seattle for something. I figured it wasn’t a likely scenario given how many other teams were probably considering similar moves. Now that it’s happened though… I’m very pleased with what the front office did here. Obviously given that Eddie “Make em’ miss” Royal has showed up as a legitimate threat across from B-Marsh, and Glen Martinez still at Broncos disposal it really did make Colbert expendable. I also thought Colbert showed very little potential during the pre-season to compete for the 2nd WR position.

As it turns out Denver gets a steal of a deal there! It’s starting to look to me like Denver may be able to take a shot to move up and steal a player next year by packaging some picks!

I am also interested to know how the CAP is looking for next year.

I think he is fine.

I did the same thing in my sixth grade championship game. I had the game winning TD run in overtime and when I got into the end zone I just kind of fell over and took it all in (I was kind of a dork back when I was a QB). I was down for a good 10 seconds and everyone though I’d hurt myself. Then the right tackle jumped on top of me and I got up and started celebrating.

Kind of a roundabout way of saying it, but I think that’s what Eddie was doing. Just being a dork.

2-0.

I liked the story. And I like even more (although it is assumed) that Royal is letting it all soak in. A reflective man is a good man in his heart. After watching Monday night Football and watching Desean and listening to the announcers talk smack about him and his attitude. I like that our draft pick is appreciative of what is happening to him.

I'll bet

that Seattle and Denver go this deal done because denver was willing to accept a conditional pick.

Figure taht Seattle was willing to part with a good pick, but only for a sure thing, and most teams don’t have a sure thing, just their questionable backups to offer for trade, so Seattle was probably not willing to part with much value for just some “potential” help.

Because Denver scored so well int eh receiver dept, they could make the conditional trade, confident in what Colbert would be able to prove once he got to seattle. The pick is probably dependent on whether he lasts long enough or something, though to be honest, they would probably be happy with a warm body at this point…

I say we veto it a bit

 cant use #80 (obvious)
cant use #84 (unless you got the game AND the Mouth)

so agree with #84

I like #15. He is gonna be such a stud I figure let him have it. There is some sort of history with other numbers, 81 is Watson. Plus one of my favorite Broncos of all time was Haven moses and he was #25
