saints TE jeremy shockey
the broncos defense cannot let the saints beat them over the middle of the field over and over in short passes and screens like last sunday. i sure hope the broncos brain trust are game plaining for Tight end jermey shockey just as well as reggie bush. shockey is a big target with great hands, speed and toughness after the catch that can still be very dangerous to exploit a weak to a mid -Level talented defense.. any thoughts on this ?

Boss Bailey
along with the fact that Colston is out makes me feel pretty good about this game. Boss on Shockey, Champ on Bush… I don’t think we’d have any problem stopping them.

totally agree
boss did a great job against gates last week. what makes you think he wont do it again?
The more I see of the Saints the more I tend to think our defense actually
matches up rather well against them. Their defense, on the other hand, is going to have a long, long day.

I can't wait for Chalk Talk tomorrow
this issue specifically should be addressed.
I am actually worried about Reggie a little. I am concerned that we are gonna have the wrong guy matche dup on him. Somebody tell me I don’t have to worry about it…

I mention that folks will argue about how good Shockey is...
…but he shouldn’t be underestimated. He is a bruiser (kind of like Marshall), and has the ability for yards after contact with a defensive player.
But with Colston being out, we have a much better ability to gameplan Bush and Shockey. I don’t think the Saints beat us in a shootout, and the should try to run us over with Bush. But if we get the early lead, they have little to lose (the game).

I'm more worried about Reggie Bush.
Our kick coverage units better bring their A-game in this one. Or Prater could just kick it into the fourth row.He could be very dangerous catching passes too; I wouldn’t mind putting Champ Bailey on him if he lines up wide.
Plus, aren’t we the team that always makes draft busts look like Hall of Famers? (See: Ryan Leaf in 2000 and Kordell Stewart in 1998) I’m very worried about #25.
2-0.
darn you papi

HEH, sorry...
Reggie goes down on contact, so we’ll be able to tackle him. He runs with no emotion except when he’s flipping over the goal line, something I don’t expect him to do on Sunday.
2-0.
I think Bush's style of play works to our defenses advantage.
Except when he returns kicks…there we’re just screwed.

im not
for one he cant run between the tackles, and he is really only a threat in the passing game. He is most dangerous as a returned. He is the 2000’s equivilent of Eric Metcalf. No more no less. He is overrated because he was on a great team @USC who had Lendale White, Steve Smith (NYG), Jarret, Leinart throwing the rock among others.

Agreed. I'm not worried about him when he's running the ball.
It’s when he’s back there to receive a punt when I’ll be holding my breath.
2-0.

Me too
especially with that run by Sproiles. Also, Reggie Bush does well when in space so we need to make sure someone is on him to wrap him up quickly.
Also, don’t forget about Brees.

how do stop screen passes without over committing to other areas to defend

Ultimately, stay at home.
Which is something Nate and Winborn are not good at. I’d say to play some sort of zone, with Champ and Paymah (not Bly, he’s too poor of a tackler) covering the flats- where a screen is likely to occur. This would leave DJ and Winborn/Boss to cover the “deep out” zone over the top of the corners and McCree and Manuel/Lowry to cover the deep zones. The biggest problem with this is that it would leave huge holes if we tried to blitz, and Brees is a good enough QB to take advantage of those holes.
Another, simpler solution would be to Man Champ on Bush. With Colston out, the Saints receivers ae underwhelming and could be covered by Bly/Paymah/JMFW. Champ would definately be able to tackle Bush.
The lest thing I could see us doing is assigning a “zone man” (I just made that up) to the LB’s. What would happen is, if Reggie goes left, DJ gets him; If he goes right, Boss gets him; and if he tries to slip up the middle, Webster gets him.
Ultimately, the Saints will try to get him the ball as much as they can after seeing the success Darren Sproles- a similar runner- had against us, and the best way to shut him down is with good old-fashioned sure tackling.
2-0.
On Shockey
At the beginning of the season, after he was traded I though he would have a good season but after a few games I am conviced he isnt anything like he use to be. I feel Boss can keep him limited to what he can do. Gates was more of a threat to Denver and was nuetralized in the 2nd half. (I hope it was more to Boss than his toe) So being the true optomist that I am I believe it was Boss, and I believe it will happen again Sunday

wondering????
what style defense do the saints play ? could there linebackers pose a threat to the short passing game the broncos have?
by broncosfaninphilly on Sep 17, 2008 6:21 PM MDT reply actions
If Scott Fujita plays
Their linebackers will be a bit more threatening… However, even if he doesn’t play they have Jonathan Vilma, who leads the NFL in tackles.

The Saints are in trouble in terms of a system.
They have so many injuries on defense right now that I imagine they are simplifying. They run a two gap line and believe in speed at LB. With so many missing pieces this week, I imagine they will run a base defense.
Vilma (at MLB) should be a threat against mid-level passes. On the other hand, they are questionable or out at several CB positions, SS, and LBs.

I have no fears this week......
don’t know why….but I have no fears this week.

Sorry I am afraid, again I think this sets up as a trap game, I could see Denevr not preparing well coming off two big divisional wins, they haven’t really ever played this team before, and based on what Sproles did to us, Bush may make that look like chump change. Hopefully Denver isn’t looking past New Orleans, they are a good ball club, and definately still have weapons, even without Colsten (see Robert Meechem), and Duece McAllister is coming back, so this could be another shoot out if we don’t have an attitude to go in an put the pedal to the metal early.

I don't have too much fear
because New Orleans just let Jason Campbell come back to beat them. That’s gotta be encouraging. And the only offensive player that I see as a big threat is Drew Brees.
I miss Al
Good point
I just fear Bush being a repeat of Sproles, but hopefully we can dominate on offense and put this game out of reach quickly.

Jeremy Shockey was a great player
for one season as a rookie. Since then, he has become average for a starting TE. His effort and execution are inconsistent, and he spends a lot of time yapping and complaining about not getting the ball enough.
The Saints used him split out a lot against Washington, and he didn’t do very much, with 2 catches for 22 yards. They ran slants to him on 3rd and short, and he failed to get across the CB’s face to make the play.
I’m not saying he shouldn’t be planned for, but he shouldn’t be worried about as much as people may think. He’s not as good as Gates or Gonzalez (or Scheffler or Winslow or Witten or Donald Lee or Cooley or Heath Miller.) He’s just a guy, at this point.
"I am not one of those who think that coming in second or third is winning." -- Robert F. Kennedy
I agree.
What can make him a threat though, is if he has has time to square up after a catch. He can be pretty physical if not tackled right away.

Does anyone know
if Moss has any coverage history or skills? Too-slender ankles, but amazing speed, good upper-body
Fullbacks Rule
None to speak of
when he came back from his staph infection problem at florida he weighed in at 218 and the coaches put him at OLB for the fall practices, but he never did play there. He wasn’t really back to normal from that until halfwa through his junior year when he put up 6.5 sacks in 5 games to finish the year. It can never be underestimated how raw he has been.
If you are looking for a good player story, Bear, Moss is a great one.

i'm hoping mcallister is a non-factor
i don’t think they can win without some sort of ground attack, and some good fortune. my rule this season has been to keep offenses under 27 points. that is alot, but i believe we can win most games with that sort of contribution, and limited mistakes on offense
