Are the Chargers Better Than the Broncos?
This was the title of a Vic Lombardi video at CBS4 in Denver.
"Were the Broncos lucky?" Lombardi asked rhetorically. "Of course. So what?"
Okay, the Broncos were lucky. So were the Chargers. The Chargers simply did not take advantage of it, and the Broncos did. That is the difference between the two teams.
Ed Hochuli has been treated as if he cost the Chargers the game. He did not cost them the game. They were about to receive an unearned gift, but it didn't work out for them. With the Broncos on the Chargers' one-yard line with a second and goal, and Daniel Graham standing alone in the corner of the end zone, the Chargers were about to lose the game, anyway.
But then, the Chargers received a gift anyway: Denver was moved back to the ten-yard line and a down taken away. Up to this point, the Chargers had done absolutely nothing to earn either possession of the ball or taking away field position and a down from the Broncos.
The Chargers had not yet lost the game. All they had to do was to keep the Broncos out of the end zone with a fourth and goal at the four-yard line. They couldn't. So then all they had to do was to prevent a two-point conversion with their vaunted defense. They couldn't.
Two plays. All the Chargers had to do was to stop the Broncos on one of them. Just one.
Hochuli had nothing to do with all that. Before the Chargers fans come down on the referee, they had better consider the multiple failures of their fallen heroes, which really caused their defeat.
But they won't. It figures.

Couldn't have said it better
Excellent way to place the words:
All they had to do was to keep the Broncos out of the end zone with a fourth and goal at the four-yard line. They couldn’t. So then all they had to do was to prevent a two-point conversion with their vaunted defense. They couldn’t.
point blank

But they won’t. It figures.

This is essentially what I was saying a couple days ago...
The Chargers wouldn’t have won the game on a Cutler fumble, the Broncos would have lost it on a fluky play. In any case, this game showed both teams to be very evenly matched. That’s a huge difference from last season.

The Broncos took advantage of their opportunities, while the Chargers blew their opportunities
which is almost always the difference between winning and losing.

Well said AZ
I think SD forgot that when they beat Indy last year they get a break as well on an early whistle. Indy got an INT in the endzone and ran it back all the way only to have a whistle blow the play dead making them start at the 20 instead.

Now its started up again
This morning on the local whinefest, errr sports station they played a soound bite of Jeff Fisher (2nd best coach in the NFL IMO) saying sure a mistake was made, but that it didnt cost Sd the game, He said their defense did by not stopping Denver on 4th and goal and on the duece. Since he is the head of the competition committee the question was posed will there be a change to the early/inadvertant whistle and he said no. Gotta love it when a coach of another team flat says what should be said. My favorite part of all this was when the local hosts said Fisher should mind his own business. It just goes to the point that the truth hurts.

Nice, that's definatly got to hurt
when another head coach says that. Fisher is a smart coach.

He is also good friends with Shanahan.
Not that it matters, but I’m sure that’s on the mind of the few Chargers fans that know their football well enough to know the friendship between Mike and Jeff.

I'm sure that would occur to those who know about it . . .
But I believe Fisher was sincere. I don’t think friendship enters into this, as I know you agree.

If it is a friendship based on values
and the values are fairness and responsibility, the the friendship is an indicator, but still a moot point.

I don't think that comes into play though
and he is on the competition committee, so it will be interesting to see how thing go in the offseason in regards to the pass/fumble call.

Here comes UM with another comment completely unrelated to the subject at hand...
However, with all that happened in last Sunday’s game, there is one thing that I haven’t heard discussed much. Think about how much confidence Mike Shanahan placed in a rookie WR named Eddie Royal to not only go to him for the TD on 4th down at the end of the game but to go right back to him on the two point conversion. Furthermore, Royal was the clear target for the TD on the unfortunate interception throw by Cutler. It is incredible to me that a rookie in his second NFL game has already earned the confidence from Bates and Shanahan to be the go to guy when the game is on the line. I know Royal’s talent has been previously discussed at length, but…WOW!!!

No kidding
we are running out of great things to say about this kid, but it feels like we are taking him for granted when we DON’T!!
Guru needs to get him on MHR so that we can make sure he knows how much we appreciate what he is doing.

i hate to do this...
but i’m going to answer the question in the title of this post. yes, they are. for the following reasons: 64-6, 4 out of 5, 1-point loss, no merriman, cooper, hardwick, …, a banged up lt/gates/cromartie, on the road, better defense and special teams, back-back division titles/playoff win, and more experience. i don’t think you can take 1 win and change all of this in our favor, but i’m willing to hear an argument, not based on the potential future. i hate them, too, but we caught them at a good time, and we better improve to have a chance in the rematch when they are healthy and at home. this is not going to go over well in la-la land, but someone had to say it. now, you may punish me
hear me, perpetrators of bread crime, your punishment is at hand.

Broncos are better!!!
All the injuries are a sure fire indication of a team on the decline.
LT will NEVER be his 2006 self again…Gates will never be Gates again. 29 is getting up there for a primary back.
Merriman may never be "merry’ again…and if he is there’s a good chance that it will be with a different team.
Without his pressure on the QB, Cromartie and Jammer have been exposed.
They’re going thru a similiar crisis as the Broncos last year and the Colts this year. Older teams get hurt. It’s not like they’re going to magically get healthy again.
Phillip Rivers has benefited greatly from the talent around him and as that talent declines so will his “talent”.
Their window may not be closed…but it is closing quickly! Sunday’s game was too teams crossing at the intersection of a team on the rise and a team on the decline. It will only get worse for the Chargers from here.

Not to mention that Norv Turner holds the reigns now!!!

Interesting.
You are right about those guys being banged up. But we were also missing our number one RB (Torain) and our number one center (Nalen). We also had new faces at 2 tackle positions, and on over half of the defense. It balances out (in my opinion), so I’ll take the “better team” mantle.

I wouldn't have any problem holding he same opinon if
the Broncos would mount at least a respectable pass rush . . .

But,
Did their pass rush look any better than ours?
The only sack they recorded was on the controversial call when Jay dropped the ball (goes down as a team sack). I don’t think that they got anymore pressure on Jay than we did on Phyllis.

I do agree a little bit
However what is in Denvers favor is youth. Gates is on the downside of his career and hasnt been able to get better off his toe. I would rather have Scheff, Torain is gonna be a stud, LT is starting to break down. You dont have over 350 touches every season in your career and it not finally start to take its toll. Cromartie I am not sold on yet. He has been beaten up in the first 2 weeks of the season. I would rather take denvers youthful OL over Sd’s. Plus I would rather have the cannon at QB over a headcase wearing #17 in SD. Right now they possibly are a better squad, but not by much

Agreed.
We are ascending, the Chargers are heading the other direction. We passed each other on the mountain in Sunday’s game.

In College...
…we had Everclear left over from a large party (jungle juice). So a couple of nights later we concocted one of the greatest drinks I’ve had to this day. We took lemonade and made lemon cider, just as you would with apple juice, and mixed it with the Everclear. The drink was incredible; however, the next day was one of the absolute worst of my life. Needless to say…don’t drink things that you can clean your VCR (remember those?) with!

I remember
bqack when I was in Japan, we went to a shipmates house and made g-d d*mns. it was mixing Rum, vodka, schnapps, and another white/clear liquor together. When tasted it you said . . . . Well there was 5 or 6 of us, so we played a game where each of us was a number rolled the first dice to see who drank and the rolled second dice to see how many shot you took. Well it was horrible the next morning. But where we drank was at the shipmates house out in town, the Japanese houses are not real strong in the wall department. So the day we saw somehow we made 3-4 holes in different walls. It wasnt much to repair. That day we realized why they used kerosine heaters.
