Cutler in the TOP 5 talks...
a little bit off skewed but the story is good:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3594747
The story shows me two things:
Cutler gets noticed for many things but mostly his ZIP and Athletic Ability
Cutler doesn't get mentioned but ONCE on the Weakness area.
The MSM is starting to realize we have the real deal in the mountains!

I don't think the diabetes is relevant
What’s relevant is that he’s being judged on the basis of his performance as a second-year player. I think his decision-making skills were remarkably good for a second-year player, and with this season he’s taken a quantum leap and they’re good, period, and will get better. It sounded like the tacit consensus was that he might turn out to be the best of the bunch, but in judging who’s best right now they’re going by his past body of work (i.e. last year) because two games is too small a sample to decide how good he’s become. But we all know, don’t we. ;)

The four guys were
Roethlisberger, Manning, Romo, Cutler and Rivers… My order would be:
1. Cutler
2. Roethlisberger
3. Romo
4. T-Rivers/Manning
They all say Manning showed great progress, but I didn’t see too much progress. Also, I’d put Rodgers (GB) or Edwards (BUF) in this before Rivers, and maybe even over Manning.

The old fogey Gary Horton
likes the same thing I like about Eli, which is his ball-handling skills. He is excellent at selling a play-action fake, really nearing the level of his brother or Boomer Esiason, who are the two best I’ve ever seen. He’s still not very accurate in his throws, but even that is improved.
I think there’s something cockamamie about Romo, but I’ve mentioned that on here before. My order would be Cutler, Roethlisberger, Eli, Rodgers, Rivers, Romo, and then on the second-tier guys like Trent Edwards or Matt Leinart (who I still think can play.)

Not an Eli fan at ALL
Im sorry I dont think a QB who completes around 55% of his passes is the next best thing. He has 2 things for him a great defense and a last name. How would he be with out either of those

I loved going through the “Single Most Impressive Skill/Strength” section. Manning got one nod for his ball-handling, as Ted mentioned. The rest of the analysts? Cutler.

wondering??
shanny claims the full playbook is now being implemented with cutler . I imagine the full playbook was in for elway too. what was elways weaknesses early in his career that cutler is way ahead of the curve now compared to elway ?
any thoughts?

I know one problem for Elway
Cutler didn’t have the pressure that Elway did when John came out. Regarded as the best QB in over a decade, the pressure on John was tremendous. Winning vs not losing was a issue that Elway had to deal with for years. As far as a weakness, I would say that Elway tried to force things a little to much in his first few years. He would take off and run a lot quicker and thus not see the field as well if he had more patience. So I guess that if Elway had a weakness it would be “being overly competative”. I would say that Cutler has shown more patience in his first two years than what Elway did.
I would have to say (IMO), there are probably some old plays in Shanny’s book for Elway, that shouldnt even be considered for Cutler. I know that Cutler has a strong arm, but not as strong as Elway at that age. Not yet anyway.

I agree with everything you say here...
…but might add I think it took Elway some time to develop touch in certain areas, especially the swing pass to backs coming out of the back field. I can recall a time or two where he practically knocked backs down with that cannon he had attached to his right shoulder. But it was awsome.

Dont you think
There is more pressure on Jay than there was on Elway? I mean Elways biggest thing is he was the #1 pick and refused to play for Frank Kush in Baltimore. I think just following in Elways footsteps has to be more pressure filled now.
I think Jay and Elway have the same weakness, they think they can put the ball into any spot anywhere

I think Elway had more pressure.
I mean reporters were checking to see what kind of candy he gave out on Halloween and tried follow him to the barber. Then he had to carry some of those early teams. When you think about it, it was amazing he didn’t fold. I would have.

Just throwing it out there. I remember that crap around Elway. I think the best thing he ever did was in 1990 when he lashed out at the media and saying they were suffocating him. It did 2 things I hastened the end of Reeves and backed the local media off John

Jay didnt have Elways pressure
The entire National Media was watching every Elway Move that first year. There was a LOT more attention on Elway. With Jay, the MSM sorta ignored him. They had Young and Leinart to follow around. The past two weeks Cutler has had as much National attention as he’s ever had.
Here at home, when Elway came to Denver, it was like the Queen herself had moved Windsor Castle to the Mile High. Everybody was so buzzed about Elway. The local media and local pressure was enormous. Cutler was never close to that sort of attention. When Elway was traded for, most Bronco fans said “OMG”. When Denver drafted Jay in 06, most Bronco fans said “Cutler who?” I think the average Bronco fan (which meant “football dumb” in many ways) expected Elway to come in and win every game; After all, the media praised him so much, he had to be the 2nd coming right?
Nobody expected Cutler to come in and do what they thought Elway should have done. Spock is right that the players around each were different and that it wouldnt be easy to compare.
But let me ask this? How long must we go on saying about any QB: “Can he fill Elways shoes?”. I think that statement ended with Griese. Elway hasn’t played for almost 10 years, and Plummer showed that he could win a few himself. No, I don’t believe that people are, or want to compare Jay to John. I think that fans have realized that Cutler has a few pairs of shoes himself and doesn’t need to fill shoes of somebody else.

I dont know if it will ever end
Just my opinion. I like comparing the two, but to a certain point. I feel Elway would have numbers that Favre would still be chasing if Shanny was in controll of the offense and Reeves would have loaded up on offensive talent. That being said we all should just let Cutler be Cutler and be thankfull that the Broncos have another stud franchise QB.

Accuracy
Check out Elway’s career completion percentage, which I believe is in the high 50s. It’s difficult to judge, though, because he didn’t have a great supporting cast, meaning receivers who could get separation, linemen who could give him time to make his reads, and a running game. When Shanahan gave him those things late in his career he won two Super Bowls. Before Shanahan his greatest attribute, maybe even more important than his cannon, was his ability to escape the rush (since his line couldn’t protect him).

Plus...
Elway had to play so many years with Dan Reeves calling run plays on almost every first and second down. Elway only got to throw it on obvious passing downs.

Excellent point.
I think if you make this list in two years, Cutler will be far and away the best on this list, and maybe even best in the league.
I loved that “Strengths” segment. Cutler, Cutler, Cutler! However, I hope he doesn’t end up like Brett Favre, getting an ungodly amount of attention. That’s really the only bad thing I can say about our team right now… If we keep this up, in five years we’ll be the Patriots. But, like, the Patriots with Brett Favre. And then I would have to hate myself.

The media has a heavy east coast bias. Look at how long it took the Broncos to get someone into the HOF.

Great links, thanks
I watched one “expert” break down the conversion and he focused on Clady and was enthusing about how much time Cutler had to throw. I saw the guy flashing in from Cutler’s right and thought, what he hell is he talking about? But whoever was doing the analysis in these two clips really knows his stuff. Not only is Cutler going to get better, Fast Eddie is only a rookie, for crying out loud, and B-Marsh
is already a beast. Add Scheffler and Stokley and you have the basis for a lot of defensive coordinator nightmares.

"experts"
All these Scouts Inc guys that provided these ratings are x-Browns scouts.
What the hell do x-Browns scouts know about Quarterbacks?
I know a guy who knows about QBs. His name is Mike Shanahan.
These guys need to stop drooling over Jay’s body while questioning his head. There have been plenty of rocket arm, mobile QBs with sub 50% completion ratings. Jay’s greatest advantage is between his ears.

Indeed he does
Everybody gets mesmerized by Cutler’s arm strength but that’s an advantage over the others only because he can read the field as rapidly as they can. Already. Jeff George had tremendous arm strength, too, and look where it got him.

My Two Cents.
I’ve long held that Cutler was a Top 5 QB in the league, but even after these two games, I just don’t see how people can overlook Big Ben here. I also think Romo has to be in the mix, while Rivers and Rodgers are starting to assert themselves. This, of course, doesn’t even take the old guard of Manning, Brady, McNabb and perhaps even Warner. Jay’s no doubt awesome, but he’s not in a league of his own. Just keeping it real…
