Best Young QB after Brady and Manning (P)?

OK Bronco fans.  Have a friendly questions from accross the country in Dallas.  Im comming over from Bloggin with the Boys with a question about the best "up and comming" young QB in the NFL after Tom and Payton.  Want to get your opinions.  Scounts Inc put out an article as to who the best young QB was:  Ben Rothlisburger, Tony Romo, Eli Manning, Phillip Rivers, and Jay Cutler.  I think its a great questions to ask and I know your fandom will play into it, but try to look at it through the eyse of someone that has no partiality to anyone on the list.

The question is, who is the best young QB in the league?  I guess the best way to look at this, keeping your fandom out of it, is who you would want to start a team of your were to get a new franchise.  The arguement that Scounts Inc put out there was Big Ben and Eli have the only hardware.  Far enough.  They gave Rivers mad props for palying in the AFC game with the torn ACL last year, which to me doesnt do much bc they lost the game.  Cutler, other than two great games this year, hasnt done anything.  Their knock on Romo was play in the big games.  The only true big game that his QB play wasnt his best was last year agains the GMen.  He played well enough to win the Seattle playoff game 2 years ago as a QB.  I dont put the drop snap on his "QB" play, but just a crappy fall out.

My thought would be to but Big Ben first, Romo second, Cutler third, and Eli and Rivers after that (either way).  I want to get your opinion as Broncos fans on what you would do.  I know Eli has a ring, but i do remember last December, everyone in NY was ready to cut off his head and ship him out.  I know, as FOOTBALL fans you can admit that your AMAZING DEFENSE won yall that ring (all throughout the playoffs) and Eli just didnt loose you any game.  He did step up and make some great plays, but do you think that Eli is truely a GREAT UP AND COMMING QB?  Or was he just in the perfect situation, as long as he didnt loose it for you?

I think Tony has what it takes to be good in this league for a long time.  As does Big Ben.  I really put these two above everyone else.  But i must say, if Cutler continues to play like he has started this year, he could be #1 or # 2 next year.

Its a tought thought.  And i want to try and keep my partiality out of it, but i just see the tangibles and intangibles that Ben and Romo have to be better than Eli as a STAR QB in this league.

Would love your thoughts.  Thanks for allowing me to post on your blogg.  Good luck!

Ok man, so thats a pretty BIASED opinion.

Eli, Big Ben, and Romo all have the exact same winning %. Romo has better % completion, Cutler yards by 20, Cutler has 2 more touchdowns, 1 less int and a QB rating better by 4 pts. I dont think those are stats to say Cutler is the BEST of that bunch, and actually Big Ben has better stats than Mr. Cutler. oh yeah, TWO games.

Well

Romo and Cutler have the same amount of playoff wins. Plus Ben and Eli have more playoffs wins than the cowgirls do since t 1996. Romo is overrated and a choker. If yo dont believe me look it up. When it counts he cant preform. I would take Cutler, Rivers, and Ben over romo

so does that mean in 2006

Payton Manning was Overated and a choker? Because if i remember correctly, he lost 6 straight playoff games before he won anything. Im not saying Romo is the best but dont come on here and say that Cutler is based of two games. I think cutler has the POTENTIAL to be great just like I think Romo has the stuff to be great. But come on, two games is how we are going to judge, both Romo (two losses in playoffs) and Cutler (only playing really two good games in three years).

Your position is flawed from the jump-off...

You’re asking Broncos fans who we like the best, and 100% of us will take Jay Cutler over any QB in the NFL. He is our QB, just like Romo is yours. Stats have nothing to do with it, we’ll just take our guy. I personally think he’s the NFL’s next big marketable star. Fans love the guy with the strong arm, and Cutler has the strongest arm (and the quickest release, and is the best passer on the run) in the NFL.

If you want (relatively) unbiased opinion, read the ESPN feature from yesterday about this. If you come to a Broncos site, expect us to tell you Cutler is the man, because I can’t imagine a single Broncos fan anywhere who thinks otherwise. Not even the losers that post on denverpost.com.

what?????

Manning did not lose 6 straight playoff games. Dude, before you come here spewing what ever agenda you do have make sure you have you facts correct. So just you are educated on manning he lost his first 3 playoff games, then won his next 2. Come big or dont come at all

ok fair enough.

My bad for the wrong stat. But again, was manning a chocker and overrated ofter THREE straight losses? Romo has lost 2. Fair enough. I am a Romo fan for sure but if i wasnt, there is no way i would try and say he is overrated. I love Cutler, think he is going to be a great QB in the league. But dont tell me Romo is overrated and sucks. Thats just flawed, and shows your ignorance.

by thad728 on Sep 19, 2008 1:32 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Never said

he sucks, I do think he is overrate and I will stand by that statement. He would not get the play he gets if he was on any other team but Dallas. So until he can do it when it counts let me know. In his past 2 seasons he has faded in the last month of the season. That is a fact. I respect you are a Romo guy, all I am saying is he does wilt under pressure.

QB comparison

Cutler has 3 years in the league. The other QBs on the list have 5-6 years in the league. I will eliminate Cutler from the choice because of BIAS and 2-3 years less experience. That said:

1) I would choose Ben first (Still very good after taking a motorcycle face-plant, respected by team, size to fight off D)
2) Romo (Very good stats. Has the normally me-me TO backing him. Shows good team leadership.)
3) Phillis (Tough. Has team respect. Low physical skills, unfortunately runs mouth)
4) Eli (Seems more of a game manager than an elite QB)

Didn’t Shanahan say he looked into getting Romo?

Agree with taking Cutler out of the equation

due to his relative lack of experience compared to the rest of the group.

With that said, I would have to say that Big Ben is far and away better than anyone else on the list (at the current time).

After that, I would have to say Romo, Eli and Phyllis are about equal. I don’t believe either of them would be where they are without the talent around them. Romo has TO and Whitten, Eli has his defense and Plaxico and Phyllis has LDT, Gates, Chambers and his defense.

That is why Culter is #1 (or a close #2)

All those other guys have a few years on him in the league, and yet here he is, busting his way into the talk of the Top QBs in the league let alone the discussion of the top ‘young’ QBs.

Lookt at the last thing you said

Cutler (only playing really two good games in three years). In case you didn’t hear, Culter had diabetes for about the second half of last year and still put up good numbers, so if he was fully healthy then he would have been even better.

Just like TB905 has stated, Bronco fans are going to pick Cutler

I would say IMHO that playing 8-12 games with undiagnosed diabetes is pretty gosh damn impressive as playing one game with the ACL injury as far as toughness goes.

Trying to look past the Bronco glasses I wear...

I think Romo is pretty damn good. I would probably put Big Ben, Romo, Cutler, Brees and maybe Rivers. I’m not that impressed with Eli and although it burnes me to put in Rivers he has good accuracy and vision but I wouldn’t want him in my lockerroom. Cutler had an ok year last year despite his illness and is having a great couple of games thus far… but it is only a couple of games. I expect him to continue to perform like this though and by the end of the year I bet he will be ranked #1 no matter who’s team glasses you look through.

by Duntov on Sep 19, 2008 1:26 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

If you watched every snap from this year....

on all five of these guys, and I have, the answer is clear. The order is Cutler, Rivers, Roethlisberger, Manning, Romo. Romo being fifth doesn’t mean he’s bad, just that the other 4 have played better than he has so far.

Again, he is my QB, and I am biased, but there is no QB in the NFL who can do the things physically that Jay Cutler can do. He’s the most naturally gifted QB in the League. As he continues to mature and develop as a player, that talent will continue to move toward full actualization.

I personally think Romo is pretty low on measurable QB talent, and definitely the lowest of these 5 players. He’s a terrific all-around athlete, and he out-performs his talent, which is a credit to him. But watch him throw a ball, and then watch Cutler do it. The difference is clear.

Well...................

Let me ask you thad, what are you looking for in a QB? Are we building or rebuilding a team? Are we looking to add a solid proven QB? or are we looking for the most upside? Below are my assessments of all the QB’s mentioned. I didn’t put them in any order because I’m not sure what you are looking for.

1. Rivers- His mouth would never survive in my locker room, he’s not a winner IMO.
2. Manning- Not even in the running IMO, to inconsistent and rode a great Defense to a SB.
3. Romo-Excellent QB with good leadership skills, has yet to win in the plaoyoffs but I think that will come. Probably the 2nd best on this list if you are looking for proven talent. Still has a little upside.
4. Big Ben- THe most proven winner of the bunch, this would be my pick if I was looking for proven talent that can win now. Probably as good as he is going to get which is damm good but he is in his prime right now.
5. Cutler-Has by far the most upside, physical tools are extremely good, has begun to show the intangibles of a winner and great leader, time will tell if this pans out but Cutler has the most upside here.

You can tell from my opinions who I would pick depending on what I am looking for as far as upside vs. proven ability. It all depends on what a fella is looking for. BTW, I don’t mind you coming and asking questions like this, I think it is fun, but to go back to your sight and blast us is pretty classless IMO. Have you watched every game Cutler has played this year including preseason? How about training camp other than when the boys were here? We are pretty high on Cutler and with very good reason. I have tried to be objective in my post so do I deserve the blasting you gave us on your sight? We obviously know more about our boy than you do just like you know more about Romo. I think it’s cool that you are high on your QB, thats as it should be, however you shouldn’t blast us for being high on ours. Anyway, above is my answer to your original question.

The player who thinks he can and the player who knows he can are two different players, which one are you???

by Broncofan on Sep 19, 2008 5:49 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

OK, I can’t reply on the Cowboy Blogsite, as there is a one day “cool-down” period before you can start posting. (which I respect) But this is pretty funny:

So i went out to the other four blogs (Steelers, Broncos, Giants, and Chargers) that Scouts Inc included in their young QB discussion and posed the question to all of them. The majority of the bloggs of course put their guy first, which I guess as a fan makes sense. My thoughts were Big Ben, Romo, Cutler, Eli and Rivers. But i would like you to check out the UNBELIEVALBE ignorance of the bronco’s blog. It was pretty rediculous of their thoughts. I wasnt trying to go over anywhere and talk crap about their QB, for even being a ROMO fan, i but Big Ben first. But the talk that Romo has had the worst of the 5 as in the starts to this year just made me completely laugh!! Check it out.

Bronco’s Blogg Here

Now, in spite of the fact that only 6 or 7 people had replied to his post, he has taken our measure as a community, and we are apparently unbelievably ignorant. (but hey, most of us can spell, and pen a fair bit of prose) No one attacked Romo, other than to say that he was developing a rep as a choker. Several compliments were directed towards Romo, and several comments spoke to the fact that we would naturally tend to be biased towards our own QB.
Now, apparently calling Romo “over-rated” was the final straw. (on a very anemic camel) Fair enough = ) But the Cowboys and their stars are always over-rated… its the nature of the media (whom we entrust to deliver our opinions to us) to make safe judgments, and then go over board with the enthusiasm, leading to disgust from fans of other stars. (Fantasy Football tends to highlight and amplify both the hype and the following disgust, in my opinion.) Technically, saying someone is over-rated doesn’t necessarily mean that you also think they suck… but I understand the inference. Romo definitely does NOT suck… but in light of his short track record, especially in the play-offs, I might take either of the 2 Superbowl winners, or Cutler, who impresses most with his poise and maturity, over Romo. That doesn’t mean Romo is a loser (other than in several play-off games = ) but it might indeed mean that in spite of his stats, I prefer a different QB, meaning that I consider Romo to be over-rated.
That is an opinion, which Thad asked for. It may incorrect, but it is not ignorant. I also believe Romo has a couple Superbowls in him… which I hope also involve Cutler, whom I believe would win. So… I would choose Cutler in the poll above, again showing my ignorance and doubly offending Thad, for which I apologize.

I'm tired of hearing about money, money, money, money, money. I just want to play the game, drink Pepsi, wear Reebok.

He was talking about my post...

and I stand by it, 100%. Romo left a lot of points on the field against Cleveland, and had a bad interception and fumble against Philadelphia. The defense won the Cleveland game, and they closed out the Philly game. As I said,

The order is Cutler, Rivers, Roethlisberger, Manning, Romo. Romo being fifth doesn’t mean he’s bad, just that the other 4 have played better than he has so far.

That’s pretty clear, and unignorant. I guarantee that I have seen every snap taken by each of these 5 QBs this year, and that Thad has not. Cowboys fans are allowed to love Romo, and fantasy players like him too, but people who really watch football, in an objective and scholarly way, don’t like him as much as the other guys.

Not to mention...

Of all these QBs Romo has had the greatest amount of talent surrounding him. Of any of the five QBs you’d have to argue that he has the best Offesive line, WRs, TE (arguably), and has had great RBs. Not to mention a stellar defense. and he STILL CAN"T WIN IT!!!! That is why Romo is on the bottom of the list along with Rivers.

Ben 1st

I’d say Ben is 1st, Rivers is 2nd, Romo 3rd, and Eli 4th and 5th is our boy Cutler. That being said, I think this season could throw Cutler to the front of the list, provided he keeps playing the way he is now. But until then, these other guys are far more accomplished. But the one thing I think I think, as a casual observer of these other QBs, is that they have pretty much maxed out their potential. Big Ben, Rivers and Romo have been playing at this upper echelon level for more than a season now, without recent or excessive change in the quality of their play. I don’t know if Eli is still making strides but I do know that Cutler’s ability is no where near being fulfilled. Most of these other guys are done developing, Cutler isn’t even close.

I miss Al

Thad...

If you’re still watching comments: What did you think was going to happen when you came over to try to get us to admit that Romo was better than anyone but Roethlisberger?

Here’s my list:
Big Ben
Cutler
Rivers
Manning
Romo

Now here’s why:

Roethlisberger

All Ben has done since he came into the league is win. Granted his first couple of years his job was just to not lose, which he did very well(but you look at the guys who had the helm before him and couldn’t get it done and you realize he obviously has some talent). However since then he’s been given the offense for real. He still has an outstanding defense to protect him and a very strong running game.

Cutler:

Put the second half of last year out of the picture(when he lost 30!! pounds with undiagnosed diabetes) for the moment. All he does is find ways to keep his team in games. In his first two years Cutler hasn’t had a defense to back him up or a special teams unit to help him out with field position. He’s developing a reputation for being able to bring his team from behind at the end of a game with his athletic abilities and his arm. Really this should be his first full season to prove what he is. Everyone talks about Rivers gutsy playoff game last year, what about Cutler’s gutsy diabetes season? Seriously, the guy was playing with a serious medical condition, lost 30 pounds and some zip on the ball and people just thought he was struggling to adapt to the pro game. This can’t be discounted. The third season statistically is when Shanahan led QBs really get a handle on what he’s doing. For someone who has coached many special quarterbacks(Young, Montana, Elway…) to say “This kid’s got it” also can’t be discounted.

Rivers:

Not a lot to say here. He’s got one of the best supporting casts in a strong defense(up until this year and with the running game, and like Roethlisberger mostly just has to keep the ball in play. He’s been sharp so far and that game last year showed some heart(hard to admit…) It will be interesting to see what happens now that the “training wheels” come off and more pressure is put on him to make plays to help his team win as his defense takes hits and LT starts to fade.

Manning:
He actually did something his brother and Big Ben can’t claim yet. He was a significant factor in his team winning a Super Bowl. There’s something to be said for that. Here comes the “but”… He has struggled a lot for a long time. Again he had an amazing defense step up and push people around to help cover a lot of mistakes he made before they got to the playoffs. If he continues to play like he did in the playoffs last year he may move up the list(could be tough with some of the guys at the top).

Romo:

As has been said several times, he’s outplayed his talent. Kind of reminds of a guy who used to play for Green Bay… In fact everything about Romo feels like Favre. His luck(I mean, seriously, who else have you ever seen drop the football in the endzone pick back up and complete a 30 yard pass downfield?), his athletic ability, and his tendency to try to force a pass to make a big play that comes apart? He has an amazing supporting cast. As has been said before, probably the best in the league.

At the end of the day, it’s all just interpretation. None of us really knows because it’s not possible to know. Everyone one of us will see the exact same picture in a different way. This is all in fun, so let’s keep it that way. Good natured ribbing is one thing. Running back to your home blog and calling us ignorant for disagreeing is pretty small of you.
