Defense needs to improve,

and we need to start running the ball too. The air game is great, but we need to be able to protect leads! This is the third game where we’ve let teams either keep up or catch up.

Pass Rush?

Holy cow, the absolute lack of a consistent pass rush is killing this team. It’s great to be 3-0 but I’ll tell you what, the offense was a little off today, and sooner or later the game will come where we’ll come up on the short end of a shoot out. Let’s hope when Dumervil gets those pins out he can bring it up a notch.

Don’t be too hard on the secondary – when Drew Brees (or anyone) has time to change his jersey in the backfield he’s going to find an open man.

Well, we also need someone other than Dumervil to step up. They were putting decent pressure on Brees in the first quarter and then it dropped off. Plus, anyone else notice the only time I heard Jarvis Moss’ name all day was when Joe Buck mentioned how he’d been neutralized all day? LOL

Personnel and scheme never seem to fit together very well. We need some consistency on the D side of the ball.

We couldn't stop the pass last year, either

but no one bothered. That’s why our pass defense stats looked deceptively good.

It's the line!

Can’t rush the passer, you can have a secondary full of Champ Bailey’s, someone is going to get open. On the up side, we really do have a decent LB corps, our safetys are capable of making plays and with a little more help we have one of the top CB tandems there is.

But like I said, you give a guy like Brees time to do his taxes back there he’ll pick you apart. Let’s hope they can make some strides against KC.

I wrote earlier that I was afraid

the Broncos would be flat. Wish I had been wrong. Glad we won. Wish we would atack the QB when we have a lead rather than sit back and let him pick us apart. Our D is going to be horrible on 3rd down conversions if we keep playing so passively. Our D is as bad as last year, but at least the offense is capable of carrying it even against pretty good teams. We still don’t have a solid enough running game, though, to run out the clock to protect a lead. But I think run blocking will continue to improve. All in all I feel more relief than exhilaration. We’re a pretty good team thanks to our offense but we’re not elite until the defense improves to average.

Our D is so schizophrenic

We had the awesome goalline stand, some nice, fierce run stops, some decent tackles after catches, and then we give up huge catches and YAC, big runs with over pursuit and missed tackles, and toasted coverage. It’s frustrating to watch. Reminds of HT’s comments that he’s not really sure what our defensive strategy really is.

Ok, I will be positive.

3-0 is 3-0, and any way you look at it this is a better team than last year. Kansas City is next and they can’t seem to stop finding ways to self destruct. Hopefully Denver can refine some things against one of the worst teams in recent memory.

Special teams: glass half full

Our kick coverage looked much improved today, against the formidable test of Reggie Bush.

Our return teams, not so much, although Hillis did okay returning a couple of grounders.

Yeah, there were some pretty decent returns today by Royal and Hall, and Hillis was mainly solid. Better tackling this week. Clearly they’ve been working those drills in practice!

I saw him at least once in the first half

It was a dime defense in the red zone, he was up near the line of scrimmage and the announcers called him a linebacker. He was probably in a couple other times in passing situations when they had Manuel essentially playing CB against Shockey and they wanted two other safeties in the game.

And I would imagine he was in for the one play after McCree got dinged up on that last drive
