A Few Questions with the Readers of Arrowhead Pride
Greetings, Broncos fans. Guru and I wanted to promote some friendly discussion with you guys and the readers at Arrowhead Pride so I've put this post up to let you ask us Chiefs fans any questions you may have.
I know the Chiefs may seem like they're in a down year but we're only a couple a few a half dozen about a dozen players away from contention.
We look forward to your questions.

LOL Chris
Welcome to MHR.
Question: We here in Bronco Nation are very concerned about our defense. Is your offense bad enough to make us feel good?
I hope so!
The best defense is a good offense!
I hope.
by Mike Clark on Sep 22, 2008 6:17 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
You don't have to be that concerned
with our defense. Not right now anyway. We’re a bit of a mess on the defensive line.
Honestly, yes our offense is that bad. But I do agree with Guru – it’s the AFC West and hopefully, hopefully this team gets jacked up to go to Invesco.

Judging by how we played the Raiders, Chris
I don’t see this game going well for the Chiefs. Unlike the Raiders, the Bronc’s mostly have thier stuff together on both sides of the ball, and have ONE person controlling it. Therefore, I am very concerned for us on both sides of the ball, with the exception of our secondary (which is still a question mark due to thier age, but not as big as other spots on the team).
I hope that in Chiefs/Broncos fashion it turns into game, but I just don’t see it happening. What I see happening is way to many Denver fans turning out to a Chiefs home game… :(

So
are the days of handing LJ the ball 25+ times and guaranteeing a win over?
Which QB gives you the better chance to win?
Are you gonna be on MHR radio this week? I haven’t missed a Chris interview yet…
Explain Herm Edwards in one sentence or less….
Mountains, forest, sea: these render man fierce, but yet do not destroy the man.
by Jeremy Bolander on Sep 22, 2008 6:19 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
I may be on
But I think I’ll be traveling then so I doubt it. But I will try.
The Chiefs are still going to give LJ the ball as much as possible. The thing is, we’re just a terrible team that gets behind quickly and has to pass the ball a lot.
Tyler Thigpen probably gives us the best chance right now. The Chiefs QB needs that mobility to scramble away from the inevitable pass rush.
Here goes: Herm Edwards is a stubborn head coach who may end up consistently winning someday if he gets the exact, precise personnel his football strategy requires. There’s a lot of ways I could have taken that.
by Chris Thorman on Sep 22, 2008 7:03 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I am a bit intoxicated
:)
So I want to toss in my .02
1) it was never gauranteed a win by handing LJ the ball 25+ times. He needed running lanes (which we saw Sunday thank god).
2) I agree with Chris here, except that I think Thigpen gives us the best chance at scoring, not winning. Statistically (and this is almost depressing) he is in fact the best QB on the team.
4) I can do you one better and sum him up in a single word (at least for the moment): Jackass.

Sounds like
Huard will be starting against Denver this weekend. That is what I heard on the radio on my way to work this morning at least.

The Big Question
Is the rebuilding process working?
What positions are set and providing a foundation for the rebuild and what positions are in need of more work?
Are the Chiefs going to win any games this season?
How can you justify the Chiefs’ rebuilding process leading to an absolutely terrible team while the Broncos have refreshed their roster and barely dipped below .500?
by unkown on Sep 22, 2008 6:26 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
RE
Still too early to tell on the rebuilding. I’m wavering around the 50% mark on whether or not this is going to work.
The secondary is young and definitely looks good for the future. Our young runners Kolby Smith and Jamaal Charles are solid too. Those are the most stable positions right now.
Yes. We will win at least three games.
The Broncos have stayed focused on the lines as the foundation of a good team and the Chiefs haven’t. Your front office is smarter than ours.

How are the Chiefs' rookies looking? Particularly Dorsey and Albert?
by nburns on Sep 22, 2008 6:42 PM MDT reply actions 1 recs
Second this question.
I am very curious about this legendary draft the Chiefs had. Naturally nobody expects it to take over the team immediately, but what’s the buzz?
by Hooper on Sep 22, 2008 6:45 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
A bit early to tell on both of them
It’s not that they’re not looking good it’s that they haven’t made a huge splash like Dwayne Bowe did last year. That’s no knock on Dorsey or Albert. It’s just the reality of starting your fourth game in the NFL.
by Chris Thorman on Sep 22, 2008 7:06 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Albert is looking good
Especially considering he is a converted guard at LT.
by Joel Thorman on Sep 22, 2008 7:11 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Dorsey
is looking fine as well. No one expects him to come into the NFL being Warren Sapp. He’s doing his job, making a few rookie mistakes, and earning his pay. I am happy with Dorsey and Albert at this point.
I am most impressed with Flowers and Carr at this point in the 2008 rookie class though. Dorsey and Alberts jobs aren’t nearly as glamourous however, so take that with a grain of salt.

Even Warren Sapp
Wasn’t really Warren Sapp until year 2.

Albert...
…was projected as an LT before the draft. But he missed most of the pre season with an injury.

But he was a guard in college. He converted to LT. That’s the point I was trying to make.

Chiefs, will Gunther Cunningham be available next year to be our defensive coordinator?
And will the Chiefs ever can Carl Peterson, probably the worst GM next to Matt Millan and Al Davis.

Peterson is gone after next year
It’s in his contract and it appears he will honor that contract.
Take Gunther. I’m frustrated with him over the last few years. We’re getting the ball crammed down our throat.
by Chris Thorman on Sep 22, 2008 7:07 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Unfortunately, Chris
I think it’s still to early to tell if either go anywhere at this point. I honestly think Gun is handcuffed by Edwards coaching, just like Gailey… As for Peterson, his job rests on progress if you ask me. If Herm can show that he can actually coach a team to win ONE game, Carl might keep his job. Otherwise, I am pretty certain when Carl leaves, the new GM will replace Edwards as well. Whether or not that is 2009, I don’t know.

That this would be the last contract he signs with the team. He’s gone after next year.

Sweet.
I love these cross-blog colaborations and it’s cool of you to walk into the wolves den like this. Here are my Chiefs questions for you:
1) Do you truly believe that you have the QB that will eventually lead your franchise back into contention on the roster already?
2) Are Larry Johnson’s days as the workhorse in KC numbered and will Jamaal Charles be a suitable replacement?
3) While Tony Gonzalez seems ageless and Dwayne Bowe is developing nicely, will you have to reach outside your current roster for a bonifide third receiver?
4) The defense does not appear to have the most dynamic personel; is that a statistical illusion or is that side of the ball just not that good?
Thanks in advance for any response.

Nope
We’ll keep him because the cap hit is way too big. It’s a 6 year deal so I suspect he’ll be around 3 more at the least.
by Joel Thorman on Sep 22, 2008 7:12 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Cap hit on a trade
is still a bit high now. I think it’s around $16 million if the Chiefs got rid of him after this season. WIth that said though, we have the cap room to take that hit. It wont’ happen though.

Unlike the Broncos
Our front office got trapped paying a guy for what he has done instead of what he can do in the future.

He's the highest paid Chief ever
In hindsight, it was a bad deal. At the time it felt like the necessary thing to do.
by Chris Thorman on Sep 22, 2008 7:21 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think paying any RB that much money is a bad deal
Well, maybe except LT.
RBs are rarely worth that much money over 6 years. We have a history of signing awful contracts then having to carry the player for several years longer than we should because our GM is too stubborn to admit a mistake (Examples: Kendrell Bell, Napoleon Harris, Damion McIntosh).
LJ took a record # of carries then succumbed to the curse of 370.
by Joel Thorman on Sep 22, 2008 7:35 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Love 'em too
1. We do not have the future QB on our roster now. Croyle is far too injury prone. We need to start the search over again.
2. LJ’s days as a work horse aren’t numbered per se but he will lose a couple of carries each game to Charles. Charles is simply too good to not use as a counter to LJ’s style.
3. We hope we have some potential with our young wide receivers. Those of us who are MU fans like WIll Franklin a lot but we haven’t really seen him on the field yet. There is a hope we can step up but our depth at receiver is really very shallow.
4. The defense isn’t that good. Yet. We’re still figuring out how to replace Jared Allen (which we really can’t do) and the defensive line is very young as well. I think everyone loved Glenn Dorsey coming out of college and you’d think he improves the squad drastically in a year or two as he develops.

Thanks!
For the point by point response and for not letting any of our question go unanswered. I guess we can keep this going with a couple more questions:
5) Who is the player we might not know of now, but we’ll remember after this weekend’s game?
6) If you could have one recent trade, signing or lack thereof to do over again, what would it be and why?
7) Are you already looking toward the offseason and do you have an idea of what you’d like the franchise to do?
8) What is your opinion of the 2008 Broncos?
Thanks again!

5) Dustitn Colquitt
One of the best players on their team!
by DBinKC on Sep 22, 2008 9:20 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
I'll take a crack at these for ya
5) We have high hopes of WR Will Franklin from MIZZOU, but he was injured at the beginning of the season. He had a very impressive preseason before he got hurt, and if he can step back into that role now that he’s healthy, he could be a threat… provided that our QB can have a decent game.
6) I don’t know about bringing someone here, but we definitely miss letting go of Jared Allen. We are really lacking a pass rush right now. If we could do it over, I’d keep him.
7) Many of us here at AP are already talking about the offseason and what to do. Right now, many of us are high on bringing back Bill Cowher to KC as our coach this offseason, but reports are he’s not interested in coaching until at least 2010. Player-wise, we need a QB, ILB, and something on the right side of our o-line.
8) Dang Broncos… I hate when they do good. I think they’re definitely looking at the top of the AFC West, even if the Chargers can pull things together.

All Fair.
It’s cool that regular members from AP are getting in on the act of answering these questions. Sounds like you guys have a nice community over there. I’ll keep an eye out for Franklin. Thanks for the input!

Please no Cowher
He would never take the job, but I heard raiders fans mention him as well. But I say if he must return to coaching, keep him out of the AFC West.
Any thoughts on Kiffin if he became available? Try to find the next Shanahan :)
by MattR on Sep 22, 2008 10:46 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Cowher used to be our defensive coordinator
And said that if he came back to coaching, KC would be a team of interest. That’s why many of us are high on him coming back.
Some of us think Lane Kiffin would be an upgrade right now, but it’s not likely.

Hi
5) After this weekend, the only persons I can think you’ll remember are #49, and #2. That’s Bernard Pollard (if you don’t already know about him) and Dustin Colquitt… They are pretty much the only constants on this team. BP is constantly tackling people about to bust off big runs against the rest of the D, and Colquitt is the team MVP… as our punter.
6) I was most upset they didn’t go after Willie Anderson from Cinci with the state of our offensive line. I have a feeling you guys will come after the QB from our right side on every play due to the weakness of the player(s) there.
7) I try not to because it’s still not even week 4. Unfortunately, it’s hard to have an outlook for the Chiefs that isn’t bleak. I would like love for them to fix the lines, and possibly replace Herm Edwards (the latter is my personal opinion). Our lines on both sides of the ball have been in a state of constant flux since Edwards took over the team.
8) I hate them…. every year, so 2008 is no different :) Good luck to you guys, but it doesn’t look like you’ll really need it. All I can hope is the Chiefs pull their sh!t together on the Sunday that playoff implications are abound :)

Do you think you will draft a QB in the 1st round next year?
Or will you pursue one in free agency?

by Chris Thorman on Sep 22, 2008 7:11 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not going to happen in '09.
The Chiefs will take either LB James Laurinaitis, or Rey Maualaga. I figure in the 3rd or 4th round they will pick up the (as of now) 4th ranked college SENIOR QB Chase Daniel. He’s a system QB like Tebow, but has more upside… He’s a bit Drew Bree’s-esque in his accuracy, throwing, and stature. Many people at AP don’t like the thought of taking Daniel, but more and more he’s looking like the best option on the table to me for what little risk he would have to draft.

- Tony G breaking the yardage record for TEs.
- Dantrell Savage taking over return duties for BJ Sams.
- Connor Barth replacing Nick Novak at kicker.
- The same QB starting three games in a row this year.
- Seeing how good Flowers and Carr can be at CBs.
- Flowers/Carr each returning an INT for a TD.
- Having Jamaal Charles run for 100 yards the first time.
- Will Franklin’s first 100-yd receiving game.
- Hard QB sacks by Derrick Johnson.
- Breaking into the 20s for a week in the NFL power ratings.
- Creativity of the drawing on brown bags worn in December.
- First win.

LOL…. You ARE a good sport… and I cant wait till you guys are feeling your oats again. As much as it sucked even in our heyday coming into your house, it was part of what made the AFC west great. Coming into Arrowhead widely favored to win just doesn’t feel as right as I might have anticipated.
I haven’t seen a Chief’s home game in a while, is it going to be the same old deafening experience, or is the current state of affairs going dampen things significantly? How many points do you think the Chiefs can score against the Bronco’s intimidating attempt at defense?

My take on these...
I’ve heard a couple of calls for fan boycotts/silent protests/etc. I don’t think they’ll happen. After all, people would love to see Tony G. break the TE yardage record against Denver.
As for scoring against the Broncos’ D: we might score a little bit more than we have been, but I’m sure it won’t be enough. We might have a shot at breaking 20 points, but the way our D has been playing, you guys will probably have that many points sometime in the second quarter.

Not going to happen
However, the stadium won’t be as electric in the Chiefs favor as in previous seasons. The Raiders game was terrible in terms of an opening day turnout, let alone a division game. I expect the Denver game to be about the same.
Sadly enough, the team is so bad it’s keeping people away.

New Coach
Nice to have you visit Arrowhead Pride.
What does the Arrowhead fan base think of the crop of available coaches.
Lane Kiffen? Others?
Who do you think would replace:
Gunther?
Herm?
Peterson?
Victor Frankl:
What man actually needs is not a tensionless state but rather the striving and struggling for some goal worthy of him. What he needs is not the discharge of tension at any cost, but the call of a potential meaning waiting to be fulfilled by him.
Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.
by wyoeng on Sep 22, 2008 8:34 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
We have nothing against Lane Kiffin
Al Davis is more to blame for the Raiders failures in my opinion. Some of us think Kiffin would be an upgrade right now, but it’s not likely we will try to pursue him. Many of us at AP are high on Bill Cowher as our next head coach. We don’t know about Peterson’s replacement… someone who agrees with what Clark Hunt (our owner) has in mind for our team’s future. Many of us like Gun, he’s been with the Chiefs a while and the defense has improved every year since he’s come back… but it’s hard to find reasons to keep anyone when the team overall is doing so horribly.
by Vince D on Sep 22, 2008 11:13 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Give it a rest for Cowher please
and live in reality. Kiffen would be a HUGE upgrade to Edwards, and Cowher won’t come to a team in such flux as KC with Peterson still at the helm of it all. Cowher will want his run of things.

Wiegmann was a decent center, but replaceable. He only plays as well as the guards around him. Our new center, Rudy Niswanger, is doing a pretty good job for his first starting year… no complaints here about letting Wiegmann go. Chris might have a better answer?
by Vince D on Sep 22, 2008 9:32 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
My thoughts exactly.
Niswanger’s been a fairly decent replacement for Wiegmann, even though some people were worried because Niswanger’s a little tall for a center.
The left 3/5 of our O-line hasn’t been the problem.

I don't know what the Broncos would have done without Wiegmann . . .
He has been the glue to the OL that they have needed in Nalen’s absence. The guy is a player, no doubt.
I have a question of a different nature: Do the Chiefs have any retired numbers? Who are they?

Yes we do
The Chiefs have retired the numbers of a few Hall of Famers: Len Dawson 16, Abner Haynes 28, Willie Lanier 63, Bobby Bell 78, and Buck Buchanan 86. Also retired are the jerseys of Stone Johnson 33 and Mack Lee Hill 36, who both died during the season as a Kansas City Chief after only one and two years, respectively, on our team. Joe Delaney 37 and Derrick Thomas 58 do not have their numbers retired yet, but nobody has worn their numbers since their death. Joe Delaney died trying to save 3 drowning children, and Derrick Thomas died from complications to a car accident, as you may remember, only a few years back.
by Vince D on Sep 23, 2008 12:05 AM MDT reply actions 1 recs
I remember Delaney
Especailly a run against Denver in 1981 at KC, Denver down 21-14 needing the win and had KC down to 3rd and 10 and Delaney goes for 82 yards to finish off Denver. Was a great guy who dove into the water to save the 3 kids, and Joe didnt know how to swim. He was a true hero

Yes, I rememember
Joe Delaney’s death and, of course, Thomas’. Both class people. I also got to witness all the others play.
I watched the Packers beat the Chiefs 35-10 in the Super Bowl after the 1966 season and then come back and blow out the Vikings 23-7 in the 1969 Super Bowl.
Besides Lenny Dawson in those years, I had the privilege (but not much fun at times) of seeing Otis Taylor and Mike Garrett, and you had a pretty good TE in the name of Fred Arbanas back then.
Oh, them was the good ol’ days . . . I’m glad they’re gone.

Question for Chris
Chris, Thanks for taking the time to give us in the Mile High some insight on your team. We appreciate it. I never post on your site, but read it regularly. I have been looking for some discussion from Chief Fans about the upcoming.
What do you think the Chiefs will have to do in order to win against Denver this weekend? What are the Chiefs key’s of the game for a “W”?
Thanks in advance for your answers.

A lot would have to go right
LJ would have to hit 100. No devastating turnovers from Huard/Thigpen.
With your offense, we would really, really need to slow the game down and play it on our terms.
Our secondary is sharp but your passing attack is pretty unreal so that’s tough.
So…a LOT would have to go right. Chris is traveling for the next couple days but keep posting here and I, or some of the other AP guys that have already been around here will take care of them.

Primetime is editor and well respected, btw
He represents Chiefs nation well while Chris crosses to the other side of the planet.
For the Chiefs to win…
Offensive play calling would have to be creative without being quirky. Unexpected.
- Running game would have to click. Fair amoung of misdirection plays.
- New FB Cox would have a monster of a game blocking.
- LJ would run like he’s mad and hit some people. (Could happen.) He looked so much better last week than the first two weeks.
- Jamaal Charles would have to touch the ball a lot and score on a long (80-yd) run.
- Tony Gonzales would have to get his 50 yards and break the TE career yardage record.
- Passing would have to be sharp with quick hitting passes.
- WR Will Franklin would need a coming out party at WR much like Eddie Royal has enjoyed, playing out of the slot against Karl Paymah.
- The right side of the line would actually have to block some people, which they’re capable of doing on a run.
- Our kick return game would have to give us good field position. Enter Dantrell Savage? Our version of Sproles.
- And we’d have to create a fumble while covering a punt, or have Pollard or Morgan block a punt that gets returned for a TD.
The defense would have to take risks and get lucky.
- LB Demorrio Williams, CB Brandon Flowers, CB Brandon Carr and LB Derrick Johnson would have to apply pressure on blitzes.
- The CBs would have to play up on the WRs and be physical. Pollard would have to make Stokley pay for catching the ball over the middle early in the game.
- The ref would also have to reward the Chiefs with a next-week, give-back ruling — calling a fumble on Cutler when there isn’t one.
- S Page would have to pick off a pass in the end zone that Cutler tries to squeeze in.
- Our D line will have to tip a couple of passes — one leading to an INT.
by sunny D on Sep 24, 2008 12:33 AM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
It would also help...
- If we could convince the umpire that MLB Pat Thomas doesn’t really count as a player, allowing us to have 12 defensive men on the field without penalty.
- If Virginia Tech teammate Brandon Flowers has any dirt on Eddie Royal, resulting in a couple of — wink, wink — dropped passes.
- If you’re behind by two in the closing seconds and Elam isn’t available to run on the field and kick a game winner. (Maybe he was deteriorating, but I’m glad to see him gone.)

Who do you have as “superfans”. People who stand out by dressing up on game day. We have Barrelman and others. Who are yours.

Maybe resign him to a low, low deal and relegate him to the backup or third stringer role. He knows the system so thats the only advantage he has.
Or we won’t resign him and be done with it.
Either way, I believe Croyle is done in KC regardless of his play when he gets back.

Hope you don't mind a Raider sneaking a question in
The most concerning thing I see when I look at the Chiefs is a complete lack of identity. Say what you want about the Raiders, they have a personality and they have some clearly defined building blocks. The only other team I can think of that is as purposeless is the Rams. What will the Chiefs build around and what direction will that take them?

Chiefs' Identity...or lack of one
Good point. Well, Head coach Herm is a nice guy and defensive minded. His players have developed a reputation for being injured, so maybe MASH tents will start showing up at tailgating. Herm wanted the potent offense he inherited to play keep-away more and not score so fast. He also stated that scoring above 20 points or so was for the arena league. The offense deteriorated due more to aging personnel, but also, imho, due to an over-riding tone that called for more possessing and less scoring. That’ll fire up an offense, won’t it?
New OC Chan Gailey’s rep is the ability to build an offensive scheme around the players he’s got. So it will be hard for the offense to develop an identity. Coaches would like to have a strong running game, but the O line just did not get addressed adequately in the last draft. Our three third-round picks (S Morgan, TE Cottam, RB Charles) may have been the best players available, but they’re putting in a lot of bench time because we’ve got players at their positions already. Bowe will probably be the face of the offense moving forward as much as anyone. Screens used to be for the Chiefs what bootlegs were for the Broncos. But the offense is simply inept at this point. It will get better over the course of the year. And LT Albert is doing very well, much like Clady.
The roots for future identity probably lie in our defensive backs. Flowers and Carr and going to be terrific CBs. Both coverage and tackling. Pollard and Page seem to be getting better at tackling from the safety position, although they both like to think they can deliver a blow with their shoulder alone that will knock down an NFL running back. The D line, while getting pushed around so far this year, has some potential. Considering the years of experience from left to right are Turk (1), Tank (1), Dorsey (0) and Hali (2) they could develop into a good line in another year or two. Hopes for Dorsey are high, but realistically he’ll need a year to learn and develop. LB Derrick Johnson had people’s hopes up this year, but whether it’s due to poor supporting cast or what, he’s been just okay. Gunther took over as LB coach this year and I’m not totally sure it’s been a good thing. He screams a good game. But the linebackers have been the weak link in the defensive chain. As well as the lack of an elite pass rusher this year.
Can we just smear BBQ sauce on the field for the remaining home games and sell the naming rights for every five-yard section? The KC Ribs. There’s an identity.
by sunny D on Sep 23, 2008 10:49 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
No BBQ. You'll get Gene Upshaw patches and you'll like it.
Thanks for the well thought out response!
I’d forgotten about Tamba Hali, he was a player I really liked coming out of college. I might be wrong on this but it seems like Derrick Johnson’s contract should be coming up soon. What will his contract negotiations look like? Will the Chiefs be able to keep all their young talent on the defense together long enough to benefit from it? It seems like Peterson, for all his many flaws, has always done a good job of taking care of his own.

We could have easily lost Allen with no compensation at the end of this year, we did get some nice players out of the draft for him.

Black Patches?
Wouldn’t that be a Raider thing? (Not to mention Upshaw himself, of course…)
Yes, Derrick’s contract is coming up. And the Chiefs have more cap space than nearly everyone else. I expect him to get signed. Tait and Jaren Allen were two players that Carl Peterson apparently rubbed the wrong way and we lost them. But usually CP does get people (Gonzales, LJ) signed again.
Tamba was our first round pick (20th) in 2006. Has a motor. Quick off the line, but not a speed rusher. Reasonably strong, but not a bull rusher. He actually had more sacks than Allen one year. But he flipped sides to the glory RDE this year and has pretty much disappeared. Good, hustling player? Yes. Premiere RDE? Not looking promising. But football is a team game, and it’s hard to pin the problems on a single player.

On the bright side...
Safeties Pollard and Page at least seem to be making contact with runners this year. They were completing whiffing on too many last year. Pollard will try to strip the ball at all times. Seriously. You don’t want to be the Chiefs’ ball boy during warm-ups. Pollard will make your life miserable. And I wouldn’t want to be holding a canteloupe in the supermarket if Pollard were to come through. Page…decent ball hawk in the passing game.

I would rather start Huard
Simply because Tyler Thigpen is so ineffective that he could stunt the growth of the rest of the team. QB is the only position on the field that has such a colossal impact on every other position.
Huard was “dinged” in the neck in the Raiders game…although that’s about all we heard about it. He is starting on Sunday.
by Joel Thorman on Sep 24, 2008 4:53 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agree with Huard
In the preseason, Chris and others were asking how Huard fits into the plans of a rebuilding team. Why not carry three young QBs that all have the potential to be part of the dynasty (cough, cough) we are building for 2010 and beyond? Good point, I thought. Apparently we couldn’t find anyone better. I don’t think we kept Huard to mentor the young’uns, although he’s been very classy every step of the way and is willing to do that. But I think we kept him for exactly the scenario the Chiefs are in now…wheels close to coming off. Insert calm veteran with decent skills to “manage” the game.
Huard went into Mile High right after Trent Green was injured and did an excellent job. Huard is not mobile, and tends to tuck, drop and roll to protect the football a little too quickly for some people. At the same time, he is willing to complete a throw knowing he’s going to get nailed. Thigpen has pretty good running ability (as in making yards), but only questionable scrambling ability, I’d say, because his scrambles don’t seem to have happy endings for the most part.
Huard is like a character in a movie at sea. He’s been mopping floors the whole movie, calmly taking insults and doing menial tasks people dish out at him. Then when the perfect storm hits and the captain is down with an epic case of scurvy, we find out that Mop Man Huard was a captain in his former days and takes over the helm — trying to steer the boat through the storm until daylight.
Huard knows where receivers should be. Has a great feel for Tony — this almost guarantees his 50 yards for the record. Has a medium feel for Bowe. But often shakes his head after trying to connect with the newer receivers. Huard will have the week to work on timing with Franklin and Darling, but those attempts may not be pretty. Hopefully Huard has had just enough time with Jamaal Charles coming out of the backfield on third downs, that he know how to shape his passes to fit Jamaal’s tendencies.
Fear: Huard and the Chiefs seem to have just recently discovered the technique of throwing to Bowe’s back shoulder. i.e. behind the receiver. I fear Champ has seen this tendency and will pick off one of those efforts and Huard will be saying to himself, “Dang! How did they know I’d try to do that?” Huard’s weaker arm will also allow the DBs to play closer to the line, making running the ball that much harder.
If nothing else, Huard gives the team and fans a respite from the youth-at-all-costs experiment that is currently working on everyone’s nerves.

Tony Gonzalez and Ronald McDonald
1. Would you prefer that Tony G retired as a Chief, or are you okay with trading him to help in the rebuilding effort?
2. When you wear your team colors, do you ever have the urge to ask people if they want ketchup with their fries?
by CoastalBronco on Sep 25, 2008 10:51 AM MDT reply actions 0 recs
Tony is a Chief
It would be very hard to see Tony G end his career in any other uniform. More than many places, Arrowhead has somewhat of a college atmosphere. Part of that stems from loyalty, imho. If the players become totally interchangeable parts for 32 general managers, what are you a fan of any more? Just the tailgating? The building? The french fried uniforms?
Will it get to the point that you just buy one team jersey that has a velcro stripe on the back because you know that the name on it will be gone soon? Tony’s character, excellence and length of service make him one of the few players you can call a Chief right now (along with G Brian Waters). The NFL is built on fan loyalty. How many people in Los Angeles would pay to see the Seahawks and Broncos play a game in the Coliseum? They can’t even build a fan base in LA, much less get people to watch two teams they don’t care about.
I’d say the majority of those who favor trading Tony are actually doing it out of loyalty to Tony. They want to see him get a ring, and if that means with another team, so be it. Now, if it weren’t for cap problems, I personally would trade Larry Johnson in a heartbeat. But that’s not going to happen.
While we’re in the process of selling the naming rights for Arrowhead, please don’t start any rumors about the golden arches. The state of Missouri has one arch already, which is plenty. And I don’t think KC Wolf and Ronald would necessarily hit it off in the mascot locker room.
