Various Power Rankings -- Week 4
UPDATED
This has officially become a weekly installment for me. We all enjoy watching the Broncos climb the ladder in these mainstream power rankings and I will start keeping track of the following power polls and update them each week.
Yahoo! Sports -- Ranked 8th, Last Week 6th
Sporting News -- Ranked 5th, Last Week 8th
ESPN -- Ranked 7th, Last Week 11th
Fox Sports -- Ranked 8th, Last Week 15th
CBS Sportsline -- Ranked 4th, Last Week 7th
Covers.com -- Ranked 7th, Last Week 9th
Sports Illustrated, Dr. Z -- Ranked 9th, Last Week 10th
I will update the last two when they become available. It appears to me that the big boys are just looking for a reason to drop the Broncos off the charts. When the Broncos finally lose, I expect a huge drop in rankings from several of the above writers. Dr. Z's comments pissed me off a little, but oh well.
The average ranking for this week is 6.9, compared to an average of 9.4 a week ago. A solid three point gain and after the upcoming drubbing this Sunday of the Chiefs, look for another 2-3 point increase heading into the big game against the Tampa Bay Bucs.
GO BRONCOS!

Agreed
A loss and we’re right down to 15-20. I wouldn’t even argue against a drop like that if it happened..

A blowout win this weekend and we move into Top 5 all around....then a loss would
probably only put us down to the 8-10 range I think. If San Diego gets back on track then any loss by the Broncos puts us behind the Chargers in most every Power Ranking. grrrr

I can't really argue...
For all we know we are the 2007 Browns – winning shootouts in spite of our defense – and if memmry serves me correctly the finished 9th last year?
I’m not saying we, in fact, are the 2007 Browns, but from the outside looking in – it might seem that way…
Remember: New England won 18 last year; Oakland's won 19 in a half-decade

I always thought the Browns were huge over achievers last year.
Cinderella doesn’t even begin to describe them. I also think the talent we have on offense dwarfs what the Browns are fielding this year.

if you look at Cleve
They had an easy schedule last year. But the real teams they played beat them. Pitt was 2-0 against them and when push came to shove in Nov/Dec the offense sucked. How about Andersons 5 picks against Cincy that cost them a playoff spot. They were overrated from the start and Anderson is showing he is a 9 game wonder

Looking at the schedule...
I’m not sure if Denver will lose.
They have already played the two teams best suited to attack the weak pass D.

We went down in Yahoo! ranking?
But…didn’t we win? The Bills barely snatch victory away from the Raiders and they get lauded (we thrash the Raiders and it’s shrugged off)…blech.
Go Broncos!

Next Loss
I don’t think that our next potential loss will be until October 12th, when the Jags come to town. We should win our next 2 at KC and against TB. The Bucs game will be real interesting because Griese is coming back to play against us. But, if we get by Jax and NE unscathed, we will probably do good enough to stay in the top 10 the rest of the year.

I say we win all the way until the Jets.
Our biggest competition wil be the Bucs.

Im conflicted
on the field he pissed me off, but he did a lot of great things off the field especially to deal with kids who have lost a parent to death while young. So it makes it hard for me to really not root for him except when against Denver

Sorry for what?
The only thing sorry about Griese was Griese. At first I liked him and he had a good arm, but things changed. The fans turned on him because we found out his true colors. Winning wasn’t important to him. Just his job and paycheck was all he was concerned about. He didn’t really care about winning. I can’t remember the quotes, but he was not competative. Nobody wants a guy that is about himself. He was never about the team and winning.
Even that aside, I will welcome him back to Denver with open arms. In fact he can stop by my house and pet my dog in the driveway…(snicker)

was scared .
he was soft . I remember former bronco and raiders LB bill romo said that he was going to hurt him . when they played the faiders the next game he mysteriously left the game after a romo blitz hit him causing a bad pick . raiders win . and that was the last time we saw him in a broncos uniform .

I saw him throw out the first pitch at a Rockies game this summer
I was surprised to see him so appreciated by the crowd.
I’ve always, somewhat irrationally, held him responsible for TD’s injury, so he’s far from my favorite guy.

I like CBS---what a game they are trying to play....
with Brady down, Peyton a little out of sink, and big ben with evil pittburg looking forward to a lot of sacks, they are looking for an AFC team that they can say will stand up to the big boys in the NFC. Fox has to be liking the beginning of this season.
I don’t like us at #4…I wanted to sneek into stadiums unnoticed for a few more games…now we can’t.
We have a very good offense—but until I see something out of this defense—there may be five or six teems that have a better chance of making it to the Super Bowl…including, sadly the Chargers.
Shanny keeps saying that, "we have focused on the run, and done well, the pass defense will get better.
Well….better than the bottom could still be very bad…I hope we crush KC. We better or we have a problem.
That said……….13-3 Baby!!!!!!!!!!!
The best defense is a good offense—and we got it!!
The best defense is a good offense!
I hope.

Personally
I think you have KC ranked to high. Houston IMO is better than what they have shown. The have played 2 road games and have the hurrican hangover right now. But otherwise I agree

I am hard pressed to rank the Chiefs higher than the Lions or Rams…after all, they did play the Brady led Patriots tough in that first game. ;-)

Give me one part of the one quarter that the Rams have played well in. I’ll listen to the arguments for the Lions to be ranked ahead of the Chiefs…but not the Rams. lol

rank KC 31 and Stl 32, then the Lions 30. I mean at least Det at one time lead the Packers 25-24. Who has KC held a lead on

Chiefs fan here
With a behind the scenes look at how the bowels of the power rankings are actually determined in 2008. There’s a coin flip in the Missouri governor’s office every Monday morning for the 31st and 32nd spots.
Yes!!! The deceptive seeds of over-confidence are being planted. Muahahahaha!
By 2010, we’ll have everyone right where we want them!
BTW, enjoy your last trip to “Arrowhead Stadium,” because next year at this time the sign will likely read Invesco-ish Corporate Name Field at Arrowhead. Something easy to say like that. As far as 2008, I still hold out hope that all the youth get their act together and that the second half of the Chiefs’ season will have some sweet wins — maybe even one at Mile High! :) And we break into the 20s in the rankings!!!

I make fun of the Chiefs, but I also think they are doing more
to lift themselves out of the abyss than the Raiders are. By 2010, the Chiefs will be competitive again, while the Raiders will still be the Raiders.

Appreciate the perspective
And I totally agree. There is a method to most of our changes in KC. We didn’t go into free agency hardly at all. And after stashing a couple of the 12 draft picks on injured lists, I believe we still have all 12 with the team.
Croyle getting knocked out and not having great 2nd or 3rd QBs has made the situation worse this year. It’s funny how most of us at Arrowhead Pride could talk about the fact that it would be a long year when it was July and August — and be pretty rationale and calm. But after the Raider embarassment, that all goes out the window and we seem to think all these young guys should be winning half the games. 2010 is realistic. And Al Davis should be totally out of money or his mind by then.

Now that Millen's gone,
could we give the Lions a #1 ranking for 1 week, as an honorific? I mean, no franchise has had a singular news event that good in decades. And we don’t even know who the replacement will be.

I don't see the Sagarin computer ranking above or in any of the comments
Sagarin has us up from 6th to 5th, although we stayed at 6th on the Pure Points component of the ranking, which is the more accurate.

Z has the Patriots at 6?
And he spits on us? You know, I actually think he’s pretty funny. I wasn’t all that pissed off. I think we should be ranked higher, but at this point we still have more question marks than other teams, like, say, the Titans. Plus, after we win the division and get a first round bye, Z will be the first to say he didn’t see that coming.
3-0.

I feel until someone shows they can stop Denvers offense the AFC should be scared of the BRoncos. At least Denvers defense has shown it can make a stop when needed. The only team/defense to stop Denver this season in the Broncos offense
