Kansas City Chiefs 33 - Denver Broncos 19 - Post Game Quotes

HEAD COACH MIKE SHANAHAN

On today’s game: “We talked about the keys to the game. Obviously the first one is you can’t turn the football over. Kansas City has an unbelievable home record when they win the turnover battle, and they won it by three today. Credit that to them. They ran the football exceptionally well. You’ve got to be able to stop the run and you’ve got to be able to run the football. Kansas City made a couple plays on special teams right there in the clutch; a big kickoff return to give them field position. Now we go back, obviously a tough loss. We had our opportunities during the game, credit to Kansas City for fighting like they did and finding a way to win. We’re obviously disappointed, but now we go back and get ready for the next game.”

On the status of WR Clifford Russell: “I really don’t know. I don’t know how he is. I know he was numb on his right side. Had feeling in his toes, and that was it. We’re keeping our fingers crossed.”

Star-divide

QB JAY CUTLER

On if he was pressing today: “I don’t know. You know, you can’t have four turnovers offensively and score a lot of points. You know, one for four in the Red Zone, It’s hard to win ball games that way.”

On if Denver needed to run the football better today: “You know, we don’t know. We had the turnovers, we got in the hole a little bit, you know, we had to start throwing the ball around a little bit. So we should have played better in the first half.”

On what this loss means: “We’re 3-1. There’s a lot of football left. We’re still a good football team. We can’t go into a panic here. We’re going to go back and look at it and get ready for Tampa.

CB CHAMP BAILEY

On being prepared for the game: “You always think you are doing enough. I’ve been around this game long enough to know if we have a good week of practice or we don’t. Coach (Shanahan) came into the game saying stop the run, run the ball, no turnovers, and we’ll win the game. And, we didn’t do the things necessary to win the game.”

CB DRE’ BLY

On today’s game: “They were able to force more turnovers and we still had chance to win. RB Larry Johnson was able to make some runs. For the most part, we were able to keeps things in front of us in terms of our pass defense. But, we didn’t do a good job against the run this week. Larry Johnson is one the better backs in this league. I know he hasn’t gotten off to the good start he has in the past. He’s a big physical guy and he was able to make some plays. Like we say in this league, ‘On any given Sunday, a team can win.’ Just because they were winless doesn’t mean that they couldn’t win the football game. We’ve just got to go back to the drawing board and evaluate this film. Hopefully we can get ready for Tampa next week.

On giving up 30 points or more for three consecutive weeks: “We don’t want to give up as many points as we’ve given up the last three weeks. But, Kansas City was getting good field position. We did good job of holding them to field goals a couple of times. To be good in this league, you have to try to hold teams to under 20 points. Offensively, we couldn’t score the amount of points we have the last three weeks.

C CASEY WIEGMANN

On the Chiefs: “They were 0-3 with their backs against the wall. They had to come out swinging and that’s what they did. The coaches did a good job of preparing them and they were ready to go.”

On playing against his old teammates: “It doesn’t matter. It was fun seeing them after the game. It is what it is. I am a Bronco now.”

Luck is a fickle mistress.

I’m no Pollyanna but I still say buck up Bronco fans. Nobody expected the Broncos to go 16 and 0 (except maybe Zappa, lol). If you recall four weeks ago, before the season began, 3-1 at the quarter pole looked pretty good. It still looks pretty darn good. Tomorrow will be the tough day but for us fans but you know the Broncos will be working their tales off to get ready for Tampa Bay. And despite the final score the defense had it’s moments.

If this be Hell, let us make the most of it!

Yes, the defense did have its moments

and they’ll need to have more of those moments vs. the Bucs. This time the offense better come to play.

blah blah blah

Do Champ and Dre even care how much they suck right now? I mean the defense is grimace worthy at the moment.

Second half run?

Of course they care.

But I’m not so sure they suck.

Champ doesnt suck

unless you are watching another game. Plus the last I checked it was Champ who forced the fumble. But why let that change your mind

that was a beautiful play

champ upending larry johnson and forcing a fumble. are you kidding me? and he saved yet another potential td on st’s. thank god for champ! now, if we could just get him in man-man coverage against the top receiver…

hear me, perpetrators of bread crime, your punishment is at hand.

We took a page from last years play book

Please burn that page,no run D,few scores in the Red zone a couple picks.oww ya ands poor ST.

though the D has been pathetic

I feel like Champ came to play, he made a great play on LJ to force a fumble, and was often there for run support making tackles. Boss too had his share of plays, but overall as a unit, the lack of pass rush is pissing me off. anyone agree?

I don't expect us to have the best pass rush

however at least some would be nice.

Definitely

I definitely don’t have the answers, but we need to get some pressure on opposing QB’s. Doom is the only guy who consistently beats his man, but unfortunately he typically either gets double-teamed inside or gets run around outside and is too late getting to the QB to do any good. I haven’t seen anyone else get any sort of pressure either. That, more than anything, is why our pass D looks so bad. If you give them enough time to throw, someone will eventually get open.

Ooooooooppppsssssss

oh, well, we all know the real problem with our team, they can’t stop anything at all anytime. They have moments but if the offense stumbles they are toast. They have not helped our offense for a couple of years now.
We know what we have to do next spring during the draft so that is a plus so lets hope our offense can play like the first 3 games and we should win a few more, but no great expectations beyond that. I believe our offenses has played better than I could have dreamed of this year, next year they are going to be untouchable. So lets hope the defense can have the same jump as the offense next year. Not to be to negative but I can’t think of any team that would want our defense as a whole, they are pretty bad.
I know it is only game 4 and we never play well in KC and every other moon on a tuesday we struggle and when ever one runs for a 30+ yard gain on our d we fall flat. and on and on, we just need to make some more changes or maybe some DE’s that will concern other teams, until then play hard boys and hope for that pot of gold under the rainbow…..

If I was head coach.....

"That sucked. We didn’t do diddly poo. I don’t care who you are, you turn the ball over 4 times and you aren’t going to win many games. Any questions?

Playoffs?!?!/ Don’t talk to me about… Playoffs?!?!? Are you kidding me?"
/Jim Mora rant

I thought our offense would come back after stumbling a few times last week. Nope, guess they need another week to get it right, Jay needs to look underneath instead of trying for a TD on every play. They have to go out and win every game for us, except they’re all young, so it’s a lot to ask (the same way Manning’s O was asked to do so 2001-2005 Colts). I knew we weren’t going to win when we had to settle for the FG late.

I think we’re going to blow up the defense yet again in the reloading season, I don’t know if that’s the answer. Heck I don’t know what the answer is either way. Can the guys we drafted develop? Can we bring in a free agent on the line who isn’t a high priced bust? Do we spend an entire draft on Defense? Do we trade up into the Top 5/10 to get a top DT/DE? Is a S like Bob Sanders what we need? (yeah, he wouldn’t hurt).

I’m probably making too much out of this. If it was a loss to any other team I probably wouldn’t have cared as much, but KC stinks on ice. Any Given Sunday I guess.

I totally agree on one thing..

Check downs should be “Check Ups”. If J takes a “first look” at what is undernieth, and then looks down field, the CB’s and Saf’s will have a much harder time reading where he eventually will go. J is extreemly talented as we all know, so that sould be a “PROFESSIONAL” improveement, just like B Marsh is working on not “bringing his hands up for the catch” untill the last moment.

Well...ok but,

That hit by Larsen early in the game was, well, it hurt me just watching it.

by Future Bronco DC on Sep 29, 2008 1:41 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Does anyone else think that Larsen should be given a chance at Middle LB?

This guy is a football player, that hit was amazing. I did not see it but last week Shanahan mentioned Larsen’s hit on the opening kickoff of the Saints game was the hardest hit he has ever seen. Larsen’s play on special teams reminds me of another player who opened some eyes with a special teams play in a preseason game in Tokyo, yes Terrell Davis. I am not saying Larsen could be that special, I am just saying maybe, just maybe he should get a chance.

I hope that he at least gets some looks

when they go in to the 3-4 defense.
