A Bronco In Britain: Prologue
So, as I've mentioned once or twice before (and was the topic of my diary soliciting requests as to however in the world I was going to keep up with REAL football) I am headed to England for a year. (I am leaving tomorrow, which means that my last 24 hours at home are filled with a lot of last-minute errand-running, mindless kabitzing, and fruitless urging for the clock to go faster, all the while tempered with moderate nervousness and wild excitement).
BUT on the more relevant side of this, Guru has kindly asked if I would be willing to write a weekly/semi-weekly feature chronicling my experiences as a football fan on the side of the pond where they think that soccer is football, and I have agreed to do so. Since I don't have my schedule yet, I don't know which day of the week would be most convenient, but once I do, I shall do my utmost to, you know, meet deadlines. So, if this sounds even mildly interesting, WATCH THIS SPACE for undoubtedly fascinating tales of comments on my Cutler jersey, the British reaction to the Saints/Chargers "match," my mad scramble to watch midnight games, my lack of sleep due to doing so, my random whooping from watching the little orange-and-blue line getting into the endzone at 2 in the morning, and any arguments (and searches for bomb shelters) I may have with the local hooligans, PLUS my impressions of English, uh, football (are they as crazy as Philadelphia fans? Raiders fans? Crazier?) since I will be sure to go to a game or two. Assuming I can get tickets. And not get assassinated for unknowingly wearing the wrong colors. (I have heard you have to watch out for that in Glasgow. Might make spring break interesting).
In short, stay tuned...

Ahh, the foggy moors
in Autumn no less, the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness….
err, um.. Have fun! Don’t be too much of a rogue!
And if you need some decidedly…british… reading for the tube or the metro or whatever they call it, pick yourself up some P.G. Wodehouse. Funny, intellectual, snarky as bloody hell, and a great vocabulary lesson…

If you are going to watch rugby
keep your eyes peeled for a running back.

This sounds like
something I recommended to Guru some time ago. Can’t wait to see how this develops.

I'm there already.
I’m British, I live between Oxford and London. Whereabouts are you going to live?
I’d strongly advise you to watch rugby over “football” as well. I’d suggest Rugby Union over Rugby League (the former is generally a more expansive game). Although things haven’t been quite as good lately as there have been some rather controversial laws introduced recently.
Have a good time though! Supporting the Broncos from here isn’t as hard as it looks. Sure, you can end up watching games until 5 in the morning, but it’s so worth it. Plus our adverts (commercials) are way better and THERE AREN’T AS MANY. The presenters talk about the game during half of the breaks.

I'll be in Oxford, actually
and yes, rugby looks like it would fulfill my craving for football more than soccer… as far as I can tell, that is a game for the truly insane. Do you ever get American sports broadcasts (although I am uncertain if I’ll have a TV) and if not, what are the best places to catch them? (i.e. pubs?)

Cool, I’m a student at Oxford…so at least you know that there’s a Broncos fan around somewhere when you’re there :D Rugby is an excellent sport, I’ve played it since I was 7. It’s not for the truly insane, but it’s tough and physical in a pretty different way to football, there aren’t as many high speed collisions (as play can go on for stretches of 5-10 minutes at times) but it’s a very attritional game, especially if you play in the forwards.
Basically, the NFL is broadcast on two channels: Channel 5 shows Monday Night games only. It’s a terrestrial channel which you can get anywhere. Then there are 5 games shown on Skysports – 4 + the Sunday Night fixture. It’s has to be subscribed to on digital – I watch games at college (as our communal TV has Skysports), not sure where else you’ll be able to catch it though, if you’re lucky the place you’re staying will have Skysports. The TV broadcasts have American commentary, but the show is hosted by a British team who talk about the game during some of the breaks and at halftime etc.
Otherwise, if you have internet access, you can get NFL Gamepass. It’s pretty steep ($180 for a follow-your-team pass) but it’s just about worth it really. It’s the American feed from whichever station is broadcasting it.

Which college will you be at?
I’m at Wadham. If you see a girl in a Cutler jersey and/or Broncos hat, you’d have to imagine that it will be me, as I can’t think that there will be many others… And I will have internet access, but a miniscule budget, so I may have to make do with the free Gamecast. We’ll see.

I’m at Exeter, starting my 3rd year. I know a few Wadhamites actually and our rugby teams are pretty close (if our team’s a couple of guys short, 9 times out of 10 the guy who fills in is from Wadham).
Digressions aside (:p) I have NFL Gamepass, so we I’m sure we can arrange something since there aren’t a lot of scheduled Broncos games on. I’m looking forward to MNF vs the Patsies though, one of my mates is a Pats fan so we’ll be goign at it.

It really amazes me...
…that so many people who contribute to this site live outside Colorado. Sometimes I feel like the lone Colorado guy. Kind of lonely!

Well, I'm from CO originally
and still live there in the summertime, but my college is in New York and this is my junior year abroad. I’ll be back in CO for grad school, though.
