Which Teams a Broncos Fan Should Cheer For (week one)
So you're sitting there wondering which game to watch, and Denver isn't available. Which team do you cheer for if you want the outcome to help Denver? No problem; MileHighReport.com has you covered.
Here's the match-ups for week one, and who to cheer for (and the reason) if you want help for the Broncos' chances at the playoffs. Note that the choices will become easier as the season gets into the second and third weeks. (Team for Denver fans to cheer for is in bold).
We're also rating the games on how important they are for Denver fans. For instance, a Denver game, or a game that features a Denver division rival, gets near a 5, while a less important game gets a 1. So given a choice of several games, you now know which one is more important to watch!
Let's feed the schedule into MHR's Super Computer and see what results we get...
1 WASHINGTON at NEW YORK GIANTS - Assuming that NYGs are the better team (SB champs), we don't want them making it to the SB, do we?
2 DETROIT at ATLANTA - We play ATL this season, but not DET. We want ATL to have as good a record as possible so we can claim a better "common opponents' record" in the event of a tie-break to get in the playoffs or for seeding.
1 CINCINNATI at BALTIMORE - CIN is more likley to do better in the AFC North. Root for the underdog to CINCY fro getting a decent record.
3 SEATTLE at BUFFALO - Take the NFC team over the AFC team to help Denver's odds of making the playoffs.
2 NEW YORK JETS at MIAMI - We play the NYJs and MIA this year. The NYJs are much more likely to challenge us for a playoff spot than MIA (MIA doesn't look so hot). Cheer for MIA to get the upset.
4 KANSAS CITY at NEW ENGLAND - Take any team against one of our division opponents.
1 TAMPA BAY at NEW ORLEANS - Assuming (as I do) that NO is much better than TB, root for then underdog.
1 SAINT LOUIS at PHILADELPHIA - Root for the team that isn't projected to do as well.
2 HOUSTON at PITTSBURGH - PIT has a better chance in their division than HOU does against JAX and INDY. Thus, it makes sense to cheer for HOU to keep PIT at bay for us.
3 JACKSONVILLE at TENNESSEE - We play JAX this season, but not TEN. We want JAX to have as good a record as possible so we can claim a better "common opponents' record" in the event of a tie-break to get in the playoffs or for seeding. But since JAX is more likely to challenge us for a playoff spot, go with TEN.
3 DALLAS at CLEVELAND - While we play CLE and not DAL this year, and thus want CLE to have a better record (so we can claim a better "common opponents' record" in the event of a tie-break to get in the playoffs or for seeding), root for DAL. CLE is in our conference, and could compete with us for a wild card spot or playoff seeding.
4 CAROLINA at SAN DIEGO - SD is a Division opponent. Cheer for the other team.
1 ARIZONA at SAN FRANSISCO - Assuming that ARI is better than SF (I do), root for SF.
3 CHICAGO at INDIANAPOLIS - Take the NFC team over the AFC team to help Denver's odds of making the playoffs.
1 MINNESOTA at GREEN BAY - I'm giving the Vikings the edge this season. Root for the underdog.
5 DENVER at oakland - You cheer for Denver in every game.

Cool
I think about this quite a bit actually.
Only 2 questions, tho:
Since we play NO next week, don’t we want them over Tampa? Opponents’ record and all.
And, I would think we should pull for Pittsburgh over Houston since it’s likely we’ll be competing with Houston for a Wild Card spot and Pitt will probably win their division outright. This is without looking too deeply at either team’s schedule, tho.
Or so I'm told.

We play SD next week....
I think we also play TB later in the season….how would that work out?? I’ll root for NO because I picked them…HT is the only one who picked TB so that is why he is saying root for the underdog. :P I see what he’s doin’ here. I’m watching you man. ;-)

Wow! I guess I did!
I typed it wrong, but at least TB has a 3pt lead at the half. If TB wins, it wasn’t because I’m a genius. lol

That makes sense.
However, I’m basing the picks on this week alone. As the season moves forward, if it looks like we are truly competing for a WC spot (and I agree with you that we will), then that will be factored in. For the first game of the season, everything is starting even. As the season goes on and teams acumulate records, the picks will be easier to make sense of.

Nice post HT
I like the MHR Computer, very creative. The reasoning sounds good across the board, with a few exceptions for me. I simply can’t root for Dallas. They must fail, and I take great satisfaction when they loose.
I also have a problem supporting any team from Florida and in this case Miami; However, they do play Farve and the jets, so I will have to root for the big Tuna and save my hanging chad to spoil them next week.
I also agree with MN Bronco and go for Pittsburgh over Houston. They should beat out Cleveland this year and win their Division anyway, so its best to keep Houston away from a Wildcard slot. Besides, Houston is loaded with Denver defectors, and they are from Texas, so no joy here with a Houston win.
One more issue: KC at NE. The Chiefs will not come close to beating out Denver this year, but I will break the Cardinal rule and pull for KC today only because they play the Patcheots. There is nothing more satisfying to see Brady and Co loose (exception: Denver wins and Raider loses) so I will remain somewhat neutral here and accept the outcome either way – But I simply can’t drink enough liquor to find myself pulling for NE.
Are you ready for some football?

Remember...
This isn’t who will win or even who I’m pulling for. It’s the teams to pull for that best put Denver in a playoff position.

NY Jets
They shall loose every game! Atm I’m watching the Sunday NFL Countdown and they are just talking about – you guess it – Brett Favre! I DEFINITELY can’t hear/read this name any more! It’s just annoying…

Every time the talking heads start talking about Favre
I change the channel. Enough already!

Didn't you mean to say
we want Atlanta to have as good a record as possible since we play them?

I dont root
for any team unless the outcome will affect the Broncos. But in week one I root against the AFC West and teams with players I hate. Like the NY Bretts.
