20 Very Brief Thoughts on the MNF Game
It's almost 3:00 am here, so these are my very brief thoughts.
1) Royal is the real deal. He made a joke out of DeAngelo Hall. His ability to stop, pivot, and catch (as well as juke to the out route) made him an unstoppable force.
2) Shanahan called a perfect game. While I thought we would see us go after an early lead to pressure JM (and we did), Shanahan ran everything in the book. oakland never had a chance to settle in to pass or run defense, short or long, wide or gut. Denver's offense was everywhere.
3) Kudos to the ESPN crew. I read a lot of negative comments when I got home and read the threads, but I disagree. The commentators spent a lot of time praising Cutler, and made a point of saying how good Denver was despite how poorly oakland was playing. The only real negative I heard was Denver being called a wild card possibility early in the game, and given last year, I think that was meant as a compliment. The important thing was that there was no fluff and no celebritiy interviews. I heard Shanny being praised, as well as Royal. I thought the game was called straight.
4) I didn't see the Show Blitz. Perhaps because this is a one gap system, and we were facing a Zone Block team. Or maybe it was because we were getting enough pressure with our front four (and an occassional LB). Or maybe we didn't have to get away from vanilla, as effective as we were playing. Or maybe Slowik fooled me, and isn't going to use his aggressive reputation for blitzing.
5) Boy, that Rob Ryan guy sure looked mad, hih!
6) That lady in the booth looked like a prostitute (the fishnet stocking thing), but I'm told that was Al Davis' daughter. She must be the same one who threw a tantrum at the exec headquarters and was screaming and throwing chairs. She seemed a little subdued tonight.
7) I love seeing Al Davis shake his head.
8) Cutler is what we already knew he was. He can lead us to the promised land.
9) No sacks against Cutler. Clady and Harris are for real. Props also to Wiegmann.
10) Can Selvin hold up for a full game? We still don't know. He only had 7 touches (5 other players split 27 carries). But who cares? Selvin averaged over 5 YPC, while Hall (10 runs) averaged over 6.
11) Pittman tied for third in the League for scoring (12 points), while Royal led the League in reception yards (146).
12) DRob and Doom - No tackle or sacks. What's missing from that stat is how much pressure JM was under. (The two sacks came from DJ and Peterson).
13) Webster had 7 tackles, while DJ and Winborn each had 5. On the defensive line, Engleburger was king with 6.
14) Prater was perfect, hitting 2 FGs and 5 XPs. Kern's punt average was pretty much the same as Lechler's, despite Lechler booting a 62 yarder. Good consistency.
15) Coverage teams botched an early kick return (giving up a 58 yarder), but otherwise did well (oakland averaged one yard on punt returns).
16) Much improved in the red zone this year (75%)
17) Denver's defense held oakland's 3rd down proficiency to a measly 16%.
18) The only negative I see (if you can call it that) is Cutler not spreading the ball. Royal 9 RECs for 146 yards and a TD; Scheff 1 for 72; D. Jackson 1 for 48 (TD); Stokley 2 for 25; Hillis 1 for 4; N Jackson 2 for 4.
19) I still like Scheffler over Jackson for TE. As the numbers in (18) above show, Scheff did a better job with receptions, but he's also the better blocker.
20) Man, it's great to be a Broncos fan tonight!

one thing, I believe it was Doom who knocked the ball loose against JM...
I was sitting at that end of the field and I swear it was Doom. Great night. :)

Nope.
Doom was closing in on JM and JM dropped the ball as his arm moved forward. Doom never touched him, but JM panicked.

Not spreading the ball is acceptable, especially when you have a receiver who is working
a supposed Pro Bowl CB. Another classic meltdown by DeAngelo Hall, maybe he should be called the Chernobyl of the raiders defense.

Right.
That’s why I can’t really call it a negative. But Cutler did the same thing last year, throwing an awful lot to Marshall too. He’ll eventualy need to spread the ball against playoff caliber teams.
On the other hand, we ran an awful lot of single receiver sets, as well as sets where we motioned a wide out against the line. Hey, if it works, it works!

We saw a lot of single receiver sets in HS.
We were a big program, and faced more 2 WR teams than a lot of the smaller division schools. Still, we saw a lot of single WR sets.
I liked putting a CB and a SAF doubled on the WR, while keeping the other safety offset to the strong side (wherever the TE was), but still deep. I’m obviously no pro level coordinator, but I have to think that double coverage on Royal at some point would have been a good idea. Either that, or Ryan (oakland’s coordinator) saw Denver setting up a trap for double coverage (perhaps more TE involvement).
What a game! The offensive calls were awesome. oakland never knew what to defend, since we ran everything at them. We never settled into any ONE thing. Shanny game planned this one for months!

Agreed.
Our Defense still hasn’t had to show anything, and now they have to gameplan Royal and Marshall together. No double teaming I’ll bet! Add in the TEs and Stokely, and I think SD may have some troubles.
The key will be for us to stop the offense.

1 more positive to look at
With Royal handing out whippings all over the field , with B marsh out , they may not have to much game tape to look at with both of them doing the whippings, so the Chargers may have to allow the running game to GO because they will have to worry about B Marsh and Royal— no 8 men in the box with these 2 on the field

Obviously your football comments are 2nd to none...
but I have to disagree with your thoughts on the ESPN crew. Their attitude only changed when it became abundantly clear that the Broncos were going to dominate the game. The entire first half, the obvious Pro-Raider bias was so incredibly obvious, my wife, who is a Pats fan with no vested interest in the game, made a comment about how unprofessional they sounded. They sounded like a local crew, on the Raiders payroll.
In the end, it means less than nothing, but after the Monday Night debacle against Green Bay last year, and now this, I seriously have to question the integrity of ESPN. I don’t need the guys calling the game to blow smoke up Cutler’s skirt after he dominates, just call the damn game.

Beggars Can't be Choosers...
I did detect some bias towards the Raiders as well but I also sensed some bias towards the Broncos as well at times. If that’s what I have to put up with everytime we spank someone that’s fine by me.
I will say that I did not think the commentating was un-professional as a whole; while this was ESPN’s secondary crew (stop the presses for Aaron Rodgers and more Favre drama), you do expect more from the self-proclaimed “Sports Channel Of The Universe.”

I hear ya.
You may have a point there. Given some of the bias that I’m used to, perhaps I wasn’t moved by some of the 1st half comments. Still, it seemed to me that they expected Cutler to do better than JM from the start, and whenever they mentioned the raider’s run scheme, it was in the context that they got it from Denver (“Who runs it better than anyone”). I also expected a Gene Upshaw lovefest, which never materialized (and in this case, they probably could have said more).
The big issue I was looking for was how much time was devoted to the game. I hate fluff, and I hate celebrity interview BS. That the crew was focused on the game is what matters to me the most. If I was suprised that an ESPN crew actually called a game instead of being a bunch of lap dogs for non-sports trivia, I may be forgiven for missing any other irregularities.
At the very least, let’s call it a hell of an improvement over last year’s GB game.

IMO
the 3 Mikes blew. I hated them before and dont like them much more today. I dont understand their disdain for Denver or even the early belittlement of Cutler. If I hear one more effing commentator or reporter say Cutler had an up and down season last year I am gonna hurt them. If up and down means 20 tds and 14 picks 64% completetion rate and 3500 yards while losing 35 pounds then I will take it, But its clear its them against the world, and I will take the Broncos to cover

It sounded to me...
Like they touted Cutler pretty early. When the did the intro, they mentioned that he has his health now, and should have a terrific season. I don’t recall them criticizing his play last season. (All I remember was that they said he was getting fatigued towards the end, when he lost 33 pounds).

I liked Ditka...
and thought he had some prescient observations, particularly regarding the very high quality of the offensive play-calling. He said he thought the Broncos were a very good football team. Greenberg and Golic are a couple of knucklehead radio personalities, who both picked the Broncos to be in the neighborhood of 7-9 this year. I think they started off pro-Raiders, and grudgingly deferred to Ditka’s observations as the game moved on.

Also...
…some have made the comment that Ditka was being biased when he said, “A coach just doesn’t expect this kind of thing to happen”. I think that’s a mistaken context. He wasn’t saying that HE didn’t expect this result. He had been talking about what it is like to be a coach, and then to have your team get blown out. He was talking about how Kiffen couldn not be prepared for a blowout. It wasn’t an anti-Broncos comment in any way.

One: great cartoon! Two: Great that Marshall’s suspension didn’t hurt the team. Three: Andre Hall’s mother died a few hours before the game, so send all the positive thoughts you can in his direction. He was given the option of missing the game to fly home, but chose to play, and did a great job.

Hard to know for sure. The raiders played a very simple Press system. They didn’t go after Cutler very much, but when they did they couldn’t get through. The LBs looked confused too.
But Denver just stayed in a very simple man-base all night. There wasn’t really anything “schemey” about Denver tonight. I can only guess that they didn’t have to tip their hand, because oakland was so inept.

Nate Webster
This guy was a stud last night. Everything that he normally does wrong (slow to react in coverage, over pursue) was gone. When facing a ZB scheme, overpursuing can kill you (especially when facing great backs like Fargas and McFadden). But Nate did a great job of flying around, being physical while maintaining discipline. He also drew some tough coverage assignments but was step for step with Ronald Curry. Hats off to Nate. He’s one of the reasons our D looked good against a good rushing attack.

Gotta disagree, with all due respect.
I still have concerns about our ability to stop the run. Also, in the first quarter Fargas ran right over Webster for a first down and then Webster jumped up and started the showboat chest-pounding like he had just dropped Fargas for no gain. I don’t know what that was for.

Just a couple thoughts to a great analysis by HT
Did you notice how close Webster was to the WR out there in coverage? Yes, the WR had a step on him but he is a MLB, for pity’s sake!! Nate can FLY!!
When they sent Hillis into the line with the ball, the pile MOVED. That guy is a tank! No wonder Sapp is gone.
And what did I tell you about FAST EDDIE?? And you thought I was spamming, didn’t you? (kidding) Can you imagine the fear he and BMarsh will be throwing into opposing defenses?
One of the few negatives, IMO, is one safety position. McCree is great, but it seems to me that the Broncos need to upgrade at Manuel’s positon.
