Down Goes Merriman
Breaking news out of San Diego, it looks like Shawn Merriman will elect to have season-ending knee surgery. It's getting picked up now by ESPN and other sources, I found it first on Foxsports.com
http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/8543520/Merriman-will-have-season-ending-surgery
FOXSports.com has learned that San Diego linebacker Merriman's season is over, as he has elected to have surgery to repair torn ligaments in his left knee. Several Chargers players have said that their Pro Bowl teammate had informed them of the decision.
Several calls left for Merriman have not yet been returned.
Merriman had reportedly been told by four different doctors that reconstructive surgery would be needed, but instead opted to play in Sunday's opener against the Panthers in order to test the knee.
Immediately after Sunday's game, Merriman told FOXSports.com the knee was pretty sore, but otherwise felt OK. He gave no indication at that time that he would elect to go this route.
But apparently, the knee did not pass Merriman's test.
Obviously this will factor significantly into the Chargers defense for the rest of the season. While they have a strong linebacking corp in general, Merriman was the X-factor in creating a pass-rush on the QB.
It will be hard to tell what the immediate impact will be on this Sundays game. Merriman saw very limited preseason action and the Chargers still went 3-1 so we will see how the SD defense will hold up when Merriman is gone for good.

glad to see he came to his senses
I don’t view this issue from a fan’s viewpoint, playing in that condition was a risk to his health.

Yes,
I really didn’t want to hear it from SD fan if Merriman got his knee blown up in the Denver game that it was some cheep shot from Denver. I really don’t know why he was trying to risk it to begin with, maybe after seeing Brady go down, he thought better of it.

HA!
Lights out indeed! He never should have played last week. And all it took was four different top-of-their-field doctors to pull him off the field… That and a Delhommes back breaking last second touchdown pass!
Just a few more steps and the Norving of San Diego will be complete….

Tom Arnold, of Fox Sports Net's Best Damn Sports Show Period, said this about Warren Sapp: "Hey, Warren, the Raiders signed you to a seven-year deal. I guess Bill Callahan was right --- they are the dumbest team in America."

In my family/friend keeper league...
…we give out a trophy to the team that leaves the most points on the bench each week. We call it the Norvy.

Boy that is too funny I feel if it is ok to borrow that trophy in our league. Only problem is I will be winning it a lot. I love it the ..The Norvy..

Hilarious!
May have to adopt that myself.

All who wish to use the Norvy
May, of course, do so! Here is how it works (at least in our league):
It’s not as simple as “total up bench points, award trophy to highest total.” Your bench can put up huge numbers…but if they don’t out-score your starters, you didn’t leave anything on the bench. So it’s up to the commish to go through each team’s starters and bench each week. I think it’s worth it, however. :o)
Oh, and the full title of the trophy: The Norv Turner “Adventures in Coaching” Award. Any team that gets three Norvys in a year gets a Billy (although Bill Callahan is gone…don’t know if that will change or not)

One Good Thing About Merriman Playing One Game
They had to cut someone good to make room for him on the 53 man roster. That person was probably picked up by another team. Now the Chargers have to go to the scrap heap to fill the roster spot.
Victor Frankl:
What man actually needs is not a tensionless state but rather the striving and struggling for some goal worthy of him. What he needs is not the discharge of tension at any cost, but the call of a potential meaning waiting to be fulfilled by him.
Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms – to choose one’s attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.

Or,
…depending on who they have there, they can activate from the practice squad. If they were smart, they would have put a good LB there in case Merriman wisend up.

The Chargers won't just miss Merriman next week
They missed him this week. He wasn’t as effective as he usually is. That might have had something to do with the outcome of the game.

Does that mean you think they will play better with his backup?
I would normally expect DaBolts to step in after this post with some stats on backups.

I’m glad he decided on surgery and didn’t get carted off the field screaming in agony this weekend. Next to go down is Syphilis. Did you see him hobbling around by the end of the game?

Was Phylis hobbling? I sisn't see that, but was wondering what shape his knee was in

Once he has to scramble a few times and takes a sack or two, he starts to look a little tender. I foresee an early career retirement.

Well I see he realized the smart thing to do.
I know he thought he could handle the pain the whole season, however not even Merriman can do that and come out fine. For his sake, better to get it over with and not possibly end his career at 24.

His story from Bolts From the Blue
Can be found here.
Jyles Tucker looks to be the logical replacement, and certainly had a huge game against the Raiders last year; producing three sacks and recovering a fumble for a TD.
Man, I am not used to having to go somewhere else for his analysis.
I could be wrong, but I believe a Raider is an old, old wooden ship that was used during the Civil War era.

I heard today
That AJ Smith and company wanted him to get thge surgery after the loss to NE. But he refused. So now there is shot going back and forth. I wonder if there is some sort of lockerroom problem with this. He could be viewed as either being selfish or not. I dunno. He is 24 and when that young we all think we are bulletproof. The thing is I wanted him to play. I want Clady to OWN him. I guess we will have to wait until next year for that to happen

If he would have gotten the surgery then, he may have been back by Oct or Nov. At least by him deciding now, it took a bit of hot air out of that balloon for us.
