Another Incompetent Sportswriter
Has anyone taken a look at Michael Silver's "rankings" in the form of his 32 Questions column? If these are really rankings, they are absolutely absurd.
-The titans are 4 and he touts them as putting "a licking on their opponent". I'm pretty sure that their quarterback is extremely questionable at this point physically and emotionally, so he's putting a team currently without a franchise quarter back at # 4.
-the giants are 2 b/c of their front seven depth. Yeah, but they're just about out at the and its only the beginning of the season.
-jaguars are 8 even after allowing garrard to be sacked 7 times and only rushing for 33 yards with the vaunted MJD and Fred Taylor
-eagles only 14th after giving the rams an absolute butt-whipping without their top two receivers.
Anyway, these rankings, as Yahoo refers to them on the link, are an absolute joke. The link is the first related item.
On a more positive note, the Yahoo Shutdown Corner blog by MJD has the Broncos as the #2 seed in its early preview of the playoffs. (2nd related item)
Take a look at Silver's ratings and let me know if you think there's any shred of truth or if you agree that they're bogus. I don't understand how writers get paid to put lists like this together. I mean, at some parts of the list it basically looks like teams were drawn out of a hat.

I think Silver moved some teams too far up or down based on week one performance, although he didn’t give the Bears much credit for beating the Colts. The Giants got too much credit for beating a Redskins team that is learning a new system and hasn’t got it together yet. The Titans might be as good as he has them rated until Young comes back and displaces Collins. The Vikings almost beat the Packers at Lambeau and yet are 12th while the Packers are 1st? Unh unh. Yeah, his rankings are kind of all over the map. Nice to see that MJD on Shutdown Corner thinks we’ll win the West and be the AFC’s second seed for the postseason. Now all the Broncos have to do is make it come true!

Saw that!
I too had problems with the rankings… I am of the opinion that the rankings should first come down to record. You just can’t have teams that lost ahead of teams that won, especially in week 1. These arbitrary rankings of teams based on perception and whim drives me crazy… Doing rankings comes down to one thing and one thing alone – scoreboard. This isn’t rocket science. Just look at the standings! 1-8?? The division leader. If there is a tie, go deeper into points for vs. points against. Amazing! A rankings system based in fact that even the most die hard fan can’t argue with – scoreboad. Further, since you’re doing the rankings week to week, it might even make it more interesting to see teams soar or collapse within the rankings… I suppose if Silver did it this way, he couldn’t put the dynamic and hilarious (?) quips next to his ranked teams. Who wouldn’t miss this?
9. Denver Broncos: How many of you are sleeping on Jay Cutler and this team?
What? Was he writing this on a napkin? This is the best he could come up with?

I like Silver
I dont have a problem with the rankings. I wish he would rank Denver lower, so when they kick every teams backside it will show the the MSM is a big friggin joke. But Tennessee has a great defense. They held Jax to 33 yards rushing. Thats great.

I like Silver too...
And I think he’s deliberately a little fast and loose and provocative with his rankings, i.e. he doesn’t strike me as the type who deliberates much over whether they really make sense. But I agree that these little “32 Questions” bits and even the rankings are basically worthless and seem knocked off in about 5 minutes. It’s a dumb format.
