At this time last week, in this space, it was suggested that New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was the leading candidate for the Broncos head coaching job. The point is still valid, only now it’s stronger.
Broncos chief operating officer Joe Ellis spent five and a half hours in Massachusetts on Thursday night, conducting a second interview with McDaniels in which he was said to be just as impressive as he was in his first meeting with a full contingent of Denver officials.
Now there is a growing concern in Foxboro, Mass., that the Patriots are on the verge of losing their offensive coordinator, the man who is in charge of the offense and helped elevate the play of quarterbacks Tom Brady and Matt Cassel.
Though Denver refuses to say anything, it clearly has McDaniels in its list of a select few finalists. The others are thought to be Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier and Buccaneers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris.
But Denver has been so busy this week that is is possible, even likely, that it will make its move as early as Monday and introduce the next coach of the Broncos early this week.
The Broncos also have made it clear that, even though their defense is in disrepair, they want to hire the best head coach, even if he doesn’t come from the defensive side of the football.

Pioli
I’m neither a fan of Pioli nor against him, but I’m interested – would bringing in McDaniels increase our odds of having Pioli as our next GM? Considering his job on personnel issues in NE and the excellence of the Goodman’s, the only concern I would have would be assurances that this management/scouting team (plus Xanders) would remain together and would be willing to work with Pioli. The combination has great potential

Pioli is cost-prohibitive and doesn't fit the model that it seems Pat Bowle has in mind.
Which I mean to say that Bowlen seems to be loath to give one person all of the authority. Pioli will be in Kansas City or he’ll stay in Foxboro.
Let me state that I don’t buy into the Pioli-as-genius mythology. New England has a program, and I think Belichick is the one who is really behind it.

I don't think so...
Based on Bowlin’s comments at the press conference (not committed to any particular organizational structure, not going to change the personnel mgt) and their actions in the search, I think Bowlin is going to use a GM by committee approach.

That's all well and good,
but who has the final say under such scenario? Jim Goodman? New HC? Bowlen himself? Someone needs to become the “decider”.

Because you can’t hire a DC who is already employed at that position with another team. If we wanted to hire Minnesota’s DB coach to run the D that would be ok.

wouldn't there have to be compensation or something...
how about we send them Champ for the Williams brothers and Fraiser. Man, that would be so sweet…

I am sure the Vikings would do it
Remember this is the same franchise that sold the farm for Hershell Walker.

Frazier for DC
Frazier is not allowed by NFL rules to make a lateral move from one organization to another. The other problem with him becoming just the DC in Denver is that he is not only the DC for Minnesota, but their associate head coach. Usually the lateral move rule is circumvented by making someone an associate head coach as well (so we could hire McDaniels as OC/associate head coach because he is only OC in NE), but we couldn’t really hire Frazier for anything other than HC. I sure hope he gets the gig…tons of experience.

likewise for Morris...
since he just got promoted to DC. The new DC will either have to be someone who isn’t under contract (like Gregg Williams) or someone who is in a lesser position (like Dom Capers). This ain’t fantasy football, it’s the real thing.

i never knew of this rule
is this because of a clause in their contract, or because of a league rule? thanks in advance.

Just looking forward to the announcement.
I am confident they’ll make a good choice.
Now, looking at the TV – I’d have said you were high if you said the Titans would lose at home. But, they laid an egg today. Congrats to the Ravens.
