Broncos hire McDaniels as new Head Coach

I  am watching SportsCenter as I am typing this.  Chris Mortenson reported that the Broncos have reached an agreement with New England's Offensive Coordinator Josh McDaniels as the new Head Coach.  I was honestly wanting to go with a DC because we need to improve in that side or at least wait to interview Spags since the Giants are in the playoffs anymore.  Well, let the McDaniels era begin.  Hopefully he can bring in a DC that can get our defense on the right track.  I'll be behind him, so let's see what he can do.  Your thoughts?

Sources: Broncos to hire McDanielsComment Email Print ESPN.com news services

The Denver Broncos have reached agreement to name New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels their new head coach, team sources told ESPN’s Chris Mortensen on Sunday.

McDaniels, 32, replaces Mike Shanahan, who was fired Dec. 30 after 14 years on the job. The team is expected to announce the deal on Monday.

Broncos owner Pat Bowlen traveled to Boston Thursday for a second interview with McDaniels, who, according to sources, was one of two finalists along with Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier.

Let' see....

Weis coached Notre Dame to its best two seasons in over a decade. Crennel pulled off the second winning season in the history of the new Browns last year. Mangini took an untalented Jets team to the playoffs in hist first year and has had them an above-average team ever since. Oh, and all three work for clearly headcase organizations. Woody Johnson directing a coaching search from the French Riviera? Everything I’ve read says that Mangini’s coaching peers think highly of him.

I’m happy to take my swipes at all of those guys (especially Weis), but I don’t see abject failure. I see mixed records. We can find lots failed and/or mixed-record coaches from every coaching tree.

What if Spags or Morris or any of the other candidates worked for the Pats. Would that make them bad candidates?

Again, I think we all want to see the defense addressed, which I think we will do, but remember, we want the best HC. If Bowlen feels that Josh is our guy, then Josh is our guy.

Mixed-Record=Mediocrity

The standards are a bit higher around here. Those coaches couldn’t have been too good since they got fired or should be in Weis’s case.

Hog....Chill....

The guy will be good. Lets not get too much like the DP over here. Got to RMN and read there article. He has been a winner and a big contrubutor on defensive side too.
Lets give the guy a cahnce, eh?

Apparently Bowlen told Mortenson that McDaniels reminds him of a "young Mike Shanahan"...

Does anybody else find that totally and utterly retarded?

by PosterNutbag on Jan 11, 2009 9:28 PM MST reply actions

that's interesting

cuz I made the same comparison recently. And curiously, the logic behind hiring McDaniels is the same, too. We hired Shanahan largely because of his ability to work with Elway, besides his obvious talent as an offensive coach.

by Colinski on Jan 11, 2009 9:33 PM MST up reply actions

I'm not saying I think it's a bad move...

Just that the logic behind replacing Shanahan with a less experienced Shanahan seems a little suspect.

Nope

It makes perfect sense to me. I think the organization is making a good change here…young confident HC that isn’t afraid of innovation. Mike Nolan to run the Defense. I’m so excited for our team!

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

Love this. I really do! McDaniels/Nolan is just what we need, IMHO.

Welcome Aboard, Josh McDaniels!

by Colorado_Kitten on Jan 12, 2009 1:53 PM MST up reply actions

Again...I don't think it's necessarily a bad decision (only time will tell).

But it’s sort of like trading a good player (known entity) for a draft pick (unknown entity).

I am the eggman...they are the eggman...I am the Mermaid...Goo Goo Gajoob!!!

by PosterNutbag on Jan 12, 2009 2:01 PM MST up reply actions

Yeah

But the veteran we traded was getting complacent in a Bronco uniform. He needed to go so our core could get a fresh breath and head a new direction.

The draft pick hasn’t been HC before, but he’s been an exceptional OC and has experience on both sides of the ball. He will have every chance to succeed as he is inheriting a very very talented offensive team. He’s already shown me that he’s darn smart in hiring Mike Nolan.

I like this move.

Mcdaniels is a young offensive guru. We have a great offense and I like that Bowlen is playing to our strength. I’m sure Mcdaniels is well aware of our defense issues and is even now planning a way to fix them. So…I think I’m going to have to call him Big Mac, after all, we already have a Royal with Cheese.

by Papamag on Jan 11, 2009 9:30 PM MST reply actions

It's very good move

I think people have gotten carried away with the logic of — we need defensive help = we need to hire a defensive HC. We need to protect our assets on offense first. The job of rebuilding the defense is different from the attributes we want in our HC.

Not great???

Three SB apperances in 4 years??? A winning percentage slightly below Shanahan’s. He coached for twelve seasons which is like a lifetime today.

"WTF" By Zappa. 1/5/09

I can deal with bears....sharks on the other hand.......of course, I am not talking about if I were menstrual(I’m a guy so that isn’t it), but yeah. I can deal with bears if my arm or something was bleedin’, but sharks? I’ll pass on those. The worst feeling in the world is to be out in the surf and feel something very large brush up against your leg as you were alone waiting for your next wave. I don’t think I’ve gone out past waist deep in the ocean since. lol It was probably just a damn dolphin or something, but yeah. Screw sharks and the evolutionary train they rode in on!
