Denver Broncos to introduce Josh McDaniels at 5PM mst

The Denver Broncos on Monday will introduce Josh McDaniels as head coach at a 5 p.m. MST press conference at their training facility, President/CEO Pat Bowlen announced.

The 32-year-old McDaniels has agreed to a four-year contract to become the 12th head coach in Broncos history.

McDaniels spent the last eight seasons (2001-08) on the coaching staff of the New England Patriots, helping the franchise win three Super Bowls, four AFC championships and six division titles en route to posting the NFL's best overall record (111-34 / .766) during that time. He was the Patriots' offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach during the previous three years (2006-08), directing an offense that led the NFL in points per game (28.8) while ranking second in the league in yards per game (370.8) and third in fewest turnovers (63) over that stretch.

McDaniels worked as New England's quarterbacks coach from 2004-05 after serving as a coaching assistant for the club from 2002-03 and as a personnel assistant/coaching assistant in 2001. His coaching career began in 1999 as a graduate assistant at Michigan State University.

Despite a season-ending injury to starting quarterback Tom Brady in Week 1, New England's 2008 offense finished the year with an NFL-best 356 first downs and ranked fifth in the league in yards per game (365.4) under McDaniels. His coaching helped backup quarterback Matt Cassel, who became a starter for the first time since high school, total the eighth-most passing yards (3,693) in the league.

In 2007, McDaniels coached on a Patriots team that was the first in NFL history to post a 16-0 regular-season record and advanced to Super Bowl XLII. McDaniels' offense was one of the most productive in NFL history with the Patriots setting league records for points scored (589 / 36.8 ppg.) and touchdowns (75). Individually, Brady set an NFL single-season record for touchdown passes (50) to earn MVP honors while wide receiver Randy Moss caught the most touchdowns (23) for a season in league annals.

The Patriots won Super Bowls with McDaniels on their staff during the 2001 (XXXVI), '03 (XXXVIII) and '04 (XXXIX) seasons.

McDaniels played quarterback and wide receiver at John Carroll University (University Heights, Ohio) from 1995-98 after finishing his prep career at Canton McKinley High School (Canton, Ohio).

Born on April 22, 1976, in Barberton, Ohio, McDaniels and his wife, Laura, have one son, Jack Thomas, and one daughter, Maddie.

Dennison is taking an interview with the 49ers

UGH. I am quite happy with the McDaniels hiring and assuming reports are correct, Mike Nolan as DC. Unfortunately, the fact that Rick Dennison lost out to McDaniels may mean that he will not remain on as OC. Obviously, this is not good for the OL. We’ll have to see who McDaniels retains, Bobby Turner most importantly. Personally, I see Dennison as a very close second in importance.

by nycbroncosfan on Jan 12, 2009 10:01 AM MST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If they offer Dennison OC job he will stay

Why take the OC job at San Francisco if you can be OC for Denver?
It may signal the end of Bates. Second scenario is that Dennison has been told he WONT be OC and that job has been given to Bates.
I would love to keep Dennison and Turner!

I read it as this...

Dennison was really the run-game coordinator here, rather than a true OC. He interviews for the HC position here and does not get the job, and perhaps is no longer interested in such a limited position. Perhaps he now believes he should either be given the reins of an NFL offense on his own, or he wants to be a HC, or both. Either way, he will no longer be happy working for the Broncos (who just fired his boss…can you blame him?)

In terms of working with McDaniels, it wouldn’t be great for Dennison’s ego to work under the guy who beat him out for the job. Likewise for McDaniels, it’s not a great idea to have Dennison working for him. If things don’t go that well next year, people will be calling for Dennison to replace McDaniels. I’m not saying that either Dennison or McDaniels has a big ego/head, these just seem to me like human nature.

Bobby Turner, however, did not interview for the HC position and if McDaniels is willing to, would be much easier to retain, as are Fisch and Bates. Obviously, there are other issues with Bates and perhaps there won’t be room for both him and McDaniels, but I’d think their co-existence more feasible than McDaniels and Dennison.

by nycbroncosfan on Jan 12, 2009 10:23 AM MST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yep...

Maybe Dennison made up his mind to leave when Mike was fired and just thought he would give the HC position a shot. That would make sense for sure.
Nice post NYC!

Thanks, Boydy

While I hope McDaniels will maintain the zone-blocking scheme of Gibbs and Dennison, I trust that whatever he decides to do will be the right choice. The guy certainly knows offense. Frankly, he’d be crazy to change the blocking philosophy with its remarkable success, but we shall see…

Dennison's path is blocked in Denver

He had a chance to leapfrog Bates by becoming HC (and he was more qualified for that position), but Dennison seems to be behind Bates in the Broncos pecking order. If McDaniels keeps Bates and things go well it would still be a few years before teams considered Bates for a HC position (opening up the OC position for Dennison). And if/when Dennison becomes the OC he is still blocked from becoming a HC by McDaniels (who history shows could be in Denver for quite a while). So realistically, if Dennison wants to move up anytime soon he is gonna have to go to another team to do it.

by MattR on Jan 12, 2009 11:37 AM MST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Dennison is still under contract though right?

So wouldnt he have to get permission from the team to leave to be anything other than the 49ers HC?

by purplesocks on Jan 12, 2009 10:47 AM MST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Perhaps...

But if he’s leaving, I’m sure it’s not against the will of Bowlen or McDaniels. It would not be very classy on their part not to let him leave if he wanted to, and if I’ve learned anything about Pat Bowlen over the last 20+ years, it’s that he is nothing but first-class.

by nycbroncosfan on Jan 12, 2009 10:57 AM MST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I thought that they kept the O coaches on out of good faith

But were also allowed to leave if they wanted.
Does that sound right?

Supposedly...

They did not release most or all of the offensive staff and ‘encouraged’ the new hire – McDaniels – to consider retaining them. I keep hearing that Jeremy Bates is staying, but needless to say this is a lot of conjecture at this point.

They’ll probably clear some of it up this afternoon. I’d sure like to see Bates and Dennison stay, but you have to look out for number one. Bowlen typically takes care of his people though, so either way you have to think they’ll all end up on good terms.

Random thought -- Hillis is really going to excel under McDaniels

One area where I always thought Shanny was behind the curve was in drawing up short passing plays to his backfield. Those always killed teh Broncs on D., and top teams in the league especially the Pats, used them to great effect.

After seeing the way that NE offense was set up, I’m giddy at the thought of McDaniels finding ways to confuse exploit the hell out of Hillis and confuse the other team.

This is awfully exciting.

by Chibronx on Jan 12, 2009 11:49 AM MST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yes!!

But not as H-back. I want him on the field as a 3-down RB, spelled every third or fourth drive by one of the seemingly endless change of pace backs already on the roster. My sig doesn’t change (at least the part about Hillis) until the season starts.

Thanks to Mike Shanahan, a great coach who will be dearly missed.

Since we have to hire someone, please get a defensive coach Mr. Bowlen.
Hillis for starter next year. He wears special thigh pads so his solid brass balls don't give him repeated thigh contusions.

Hillis may be an exception in one regard

He might be a man who is more suited to the NFL than to college. His size was unusual in college but he’s just a big RB in the pros. He has much better hands than almost any FB I know if (except HG, who is long gone). His blocking isn’t exceptional, although he’s fairly good. Interesting.

True. But I would say McDaniels has a lot more to work with (defense notwithstanding) and a lot worse divisional competition (San Diego notwithstanding) than that other one.

GOOD JOB

I like the hiring of McDaniels, he obviously is a offensive guy and I am ok with that. Mike Shanahan was a good coach, but I agree that it was time for a change. We were not winning and that is the bottom line. McDaniels will have a new a system and it obviously worked in New England. I also am a huge fan of bringing in Mike Nolan as the defensive coordinator. If he can do what he did with the Ravens in 2000, I think we will be much improved and be back at the top in defensive rankings. We are a RB and a ferw key players on defense away from being a serious contender. I think we should go after John Vilma, Albert Hanesworth, Julious Peppers in free agency. In the draft we need to get the best possible safety with our first pick and then the best LB with our 2nd pick. Grab a RB in the third round, possibly the kid from CO. State, then back to defense for the rest of the draft, what do you guys think?

by Tomeboy58801 on Jan 12, 2009 12:52 PM MST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

3rd round is too soon for CSU's Gartrell

Gartrell Johnson III probably won’t even get drafted. He helped himself a lot with 375 yards in the New Mexico bowl but it was against a Fresno State team that has had trouble with bigger running backs all year. If he goes, 7th round, but I say the Broncs should wait and see. If he gets picked, no big loss. If he doesn’t, add him to the practice squad and see how he develops.

I’ve watched Johnson for 3 years now while attending CSU and he started up as a slow power back that would always run into his own linemen. Now he’s learned to run between his own guys. He’s still slower than I-25 on a Tuesday afternoon and can’t create his own play.

Laughing At First and 10

Just happened to flip on the worst show with the worst host (Skip Bayless) on ESPN and they were talking about Coach Mac. Nothing but negativity. Mild accusations of racism. No hope.

they weren’t talking about McD being racist, but rather that Bowlen hired the young white kid instead of the experience black man.

Yeah I saw it too (unfortunately)

I should have known better than to tune into ESPN. What a worthless segment. They talked about some D assistant in Atlanta for 20 years as being comparable to a guy who guided the Pats O to the BEST season ever in the history of the NFL, and then took a QB who hadn’t started a game since high school and made him into an 11 game winner and a prolific passer by season’s end…. yeah, it’s all because Bowlen wanted a “buddy” and the old boys club.

That kid is a playmaker and would be great in a 3-4. The whole key is getting a NT. From there, we can do a lot of neat things with Mike Nolan calling plays.

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

McDaniels was the best option for this team. You CAN NOT overfocus on the defense and possibley have Jeremy Bates not progress with Cutler. McDaniels will watch over both sides of the ball, especially the O, while letting a defensive guy handle the D along with an intelligent GM.

definitely...

It’s a fast downward slope for corners once it starts…and I’d say it has started for both our main corners.

At this point I’d consider it a nice surprise if Bailey ever stays healthy again for an entire season…certainly nothing to count on.

I don’t think I need to discuss the problems with Bly.

It is really hard to say

I wouldn’t make any assumptions. Based on what I saw this year, I think our secondary was very very misused. The defensive play calling didn’t play to their strengths at all and we were unable to generate any semblance of a pass rush.

Let’s see how they do this year. I think both Bly and Baily will be fine in a decent defense that can generate pressure.

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

by PosterNutbag on Jan 12, 2009 2:38 PM MST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Good question...

I’d wait. A good pass rush can do wonders for any corner.

Perfect example yesterday in teh Eagles-Giants game. McNabb gets the heat right in his grill so he steps back and tries to go downfield. Only, instead of hitting his receiver who has a half step on the CB, you can chalk up another INT for what’s-his-name, you know, those famous Giants CB’s, who are they again?

Also, compare Cromartie’s (SD) INT numbers from last year when the chargeless had a pass rush vs’ this year when they didn’t. Apples and oranges.

Put a solid rush in front of Bailey and Bly and you’ll see their numbers go back up to where they’ve been their whole careers.

aka MN Bronco

by pubkeeper on Jan 12, 2009 2:24 PM MST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree...

It’s virtually impossible to discuss the merits of a CB who has absolutely no pass rush.

With Bailey though my main concern is his ability to stay healthy going forward.

And we need a money safety…period. Is Barrett that guy? I’m certainly not convinced.

You’ve got to evaluate the CB’s and safeties separately. There again, Bailey and Bly had no help up front or over the top. Yikes!

yes it is..

Even though there are legitimate fans of Bly and Bailey they are both costing us way to much.. not to mention how pedestrian their play has been, nay sayers will say no pass rush but a corner has to be able to tackle in open space and that disqualifies Bly immediately.. Bailey is never going to have the speed he had and has lost both a step and a passion for winning.. Bottom line is this.. this new defence we’ve been begging for comes at a cost and I for one would love to start up front this time, can we get a second rounder for Bailey?

Nothing's Guaranteed

First, we don’t know what defense we will be playing yet. Nolan has run a 4-3 and a 3-4.

Second, everyone on defense has been put on notice. Everybody will have to fight for a spot.

Third, I’m betting that we take an LB or 2 somewhere in the draft or free agency and who’s to say that they won’t be better?

by jwkcsu on Jan 12, 2009 2:18 PM MST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Still,

getting a pash rush will be very tough next year since it takes time to develop defensive ends. I get the feeling that some think we can say poof and we’ll have a d line immediately. You have to start somewhere, but then that guy gets doubled. Next year will be about scheme and not necessarily an ed reed or ray lewis or harrison type guy going out of his way to make an amazing play we’ll remember later on.

It feels great to know the D won't be trying to do things the hard way

Shanny did it the hard way by trying to win without a pass rush. He went 10 years without drafting a DL in the first round. It was an insane approach.

I love Champ as much as anyone, and I actually think pretty highly of Bly. But it’s nuts to spend big $$ on two CBs without a pass rush in place. You get the pass rush first — if you don’t have it, you waste the CBs. And you’d be better off spending the money on, you know, a pass rush, so that Jack Williams and Josh Bell and Karl Paymah could grab 15 picks amongst them, even though they’re lesser CBs

I can deal with bears....sharks on the other hand.......of course, I am not talking about if I were menstrual(I’m a guy so that isn’t it), but yeah. I can deal with bears if my arm or something was bleedin’, but sharks? I’ll pass on those. The worst feeling in the world is to be out in the surf and feel something very large brush up against your leg as you were alone waiting for your next wave. I don’t think I’ve gone out past waist deep in the ocean since. lol It was probably just a damn dolphin or something, but yeah. Screw sharks and the evolutionary train they rode in on!

Following the link

shows that Ashley Lelie is with the 49ers and Deltha O’Neal is with the Bengals.

I’m sure there’s a more up-to-date listing somewhere out there that actually has the players on the correct teams.

It occurs to me that Bowlen may have wanted to get McDaniels hired by Sunday night...

knowing that the Colts HC position may be opening up today.

Trying to beat the Colts to the punch. I wonder who the Colts will go after? Spags?

colts spot

shanahan? peyton will probably be drooling over the chance of working with ‘the mastermind’. (the possibilities for that offense are a little scary). shanahan will want to go to a strong franchise with good ownership. of all the open spots, colts are the best fit.

This is confusing.

I recall Pat Bowlen saying that he fired Shanahan because he doesn’t believe in coaches for life. Well then why the heck do you go hiring someone with no head coaching expierience along with no defensive expierience which is what i thought was the main issue this offseason. Might as well as just demoted Shanahan and not fired the guy who set up one of the best and yourngest offenses in the game. I just feel like we hired someone that wouldn’t give us any more than Shanahan could. Also look at the trend of New England coachs. All fired. I guess thats why they say higher the risk, higher the reward.

Actually McDaniels

spent his first 3 years in NE on the defensive side of the ball. So he has some experience there, and it’s more about changing a stale franchise and igniting it with youth than anything Shanny did or didn’t do. Except win, if Shanny had won a few more games the last 3 years he’d still be here no doubt.

I still believe

that Bowlen told Shanahan that he couldn’t be GM anymore and Shanahan said that he wouldn’t stay on as head coach only. Therefore, Shanahan had to go.

by adamriggs on Jan 12, 2009 8:03 PM MST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I don't think that was actually said

But I do think Bowlen know that would be Shanahan’s response. That’s why the talk they had was only 5 minutes. They are both too classy to have a tit-for-tat debate over something like that and they know each other way too well for it.

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.
