Around SBN: Iron Bowl Thoughts... Right Now

Speaking of San Diego...

It looks like Ron Rivera has opened a few eyes with the job he's done since taking over for Ted Cottrell. I was disappointed when they let Cottrell go because I knew he was the issue with that defense's underperforming. I remember watching how much better the Vikings' defense got when he left here. Anyway, I still think it'd be great to see Rivera land a HC gig somewhere and leave them in the lurch again. SD's window is starting to close and whatever can speed the process con only be good news.

Agreed

Hopefully LT is gone too. Gates is getting older. Maybe in the next few years it will be Merrmiman, Phyllis and the also-rans in SD.

Thanks to Mike Shanahan, a great coach who will be dearly missed. But...
Let's all get on the Mac Daddy Express!
Hillis for starter next year. He wears special thigh pads so his solid brass balls don't give him repeated thigh contusions.

If I remember correctly

at the beginning of the season (before Merroidman went on IR) the talk was that he probably wouldn’t return to the bolts. It seemed to be more of a personality clash more than anything. Maybe he didn’t like Cotrell but would stay for Rivera?

It would be interesting to see him in Denver, as long as he leaves his ’roids behind in SD!

"WTF" By Zappa. 1/5/09

I can deal with bears....sharks on the other hand.......of course, I am not talking about if I were menstrual(I’m a guy so that isn’t it), but yeah. I can deal with bears if my arm or something was bleedin’, but sharks? I’ll pass on those. The worst feeling in the world is to be out in the surf and feel something very large brush up against your leg as you were alone waiting for your next wave. I don’t think I’ve gone out past waist deep in the ocean since. lol It was probably just a damn dolphin or something, but yeah. Screw sharks and the evolutionary train they rode in on!

For all of LT's issues...

I’d advocate picking him up in a heartbeat. It’s not his fault San Diego’s offensive line can’t block for nothin’.

This is my GAP, there are many like it but this one is mine. Without my GAP I am useless, without me, they will run through my GAP. I will protect my GAP and have my brothers back on his. I will not be moved from my GAP, I am a crazed dog that patrols this area and will defeat all who entire it. I own this GAP, it is mine. I bought it with blood and sweat. I will not be pushed. I will not be moved. This Sunday I will make a stand and a statement.

Not I Zappa....I am not into him and he would not be a good fit for our young team.

At least LT

was up off the bench last night standing on the sidelines as opposed to sitting on the bench moping.

Maybe he was hoping Sproles would do better than the 1.5ypc so that LT would be let loose to try to run behind a line that can actually block?

I don't think we need another injury-prone RB.

I really hope he gets the Lions gig

He deserves a shot at HC, and plus it would weaken the Chargers.

The line isn’t his major issue, I thought this year. Playcalling is one, but age and injury are the others.

I really like watching LT – or did until this year. Having gotten to watch all the SD games, it was my impression that the injuries to his wheels are taking their toll. He seemed a little slower and had less of the ‘pop’ that used to taken him past or through other D’s.

I just feel like the media is buying into the age thing too much.

LT isn’t Shaun Alexander. Sproles is a lot younger and he couldn’t do any better than LT. I hope SD does cut him and I hope we sign him for a year or two…screw it. He’s burned us for last couple of years…let him burn SD for the next couple. lol Or he could be washed up…who knows. heh

It will be interesting none the less

LT has a torn muscle in his groin and may need surgery. I also heard him say that he may not need surgery because he said other players have had the same thing and worse without getting surgery. He isn’t getting any healthier and his contract runs out about 2011 or 2012 (that is a guess).

SD could franchise tag Sproles, however looking at what happened Sunday, he isn’t a guy who is going to run up the middle against a solid D. He needs to be in space. SD let Brees and Turner walk, so I wonder what they do with Sproles because I don’t see them spending a lot of money on both.

Now that the Steelers beat the Chargers, I can really enjoy the rest of the playoffs.

i was making that same comment last week here

And people were killing me, calling me a bitter Bronco fan (true but it doesnt make me wrong) I had stated lets see what Sproles can do against defenses that rank in the lower third in run defense. Look what happened. Spoles is a great return guy, but not an everydown back

+1

I’m not big on Sproles at all…let San Diego franchise him. We don’t need it as we have 4 backs just as good if not better than him.

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

Didn't seem like Hester will be the Next Big Thing

Which may mean that SD will look long and hard at a big, fast RB to complement Sproles. We saw yesterday what happens if you can key on him. And what happens when the D spends most of the game in Crimea’s face

SD paid for Hester too

I don’t recall what exactly, but multiple draft picks…. AJ Smith has a big hand in closing their window…

AJ Smith

does seem to have lost his touch. For every Eric Weddle (who is good so far, but not great), there’s a Buster Davis (who? 1st round WR a couple years back). Then you look at some of the other decisions, like letting Michael Turner go (what is the post LT plan? Hester, Sproles? yikes) and a long-term contract for Jyles Tucker (he’s the post Merriman plan?), and the window does look like it’s closing. He came from Buffalo, and they haven’t weathered the post Kelly/Thomas/Norwood era so well.

by CoastalBronco on Jan 13, 2009 9:53 AM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Weddle

there was a series of plays that didn’t fair too well for Weddle during the Steelers game. There were a couple of missed tackles, a chance at an interception then the punt that bounced off his head! I’m pretty sure he was looking to climb under the bench after that one. Surprising that Phyllis didn’t throw him under the bus for that.

If he was BOLD

Smith would’ve kept Turner and let LT see the writing on the wall. Who couldn’t see Turner’s success coming a mile away?
