Pro Quality. Fan Perspective.
Around SBN: Time To Fire Ernie Kent

So we know he'll wear the hoodie. And what else? Not much ...

Forget about defensive coordinators, retention of coaches from the previous regime, the miniscule details of the power structure of the Broncos’ front office, the tenor of his interviews with Broncos brass, or the inherent issues that are part and parcel with being the league’s youngest coach and the fifth-youngest sideline czar in NFL history.

No, the most illuminating nugget unearthed regarding the Broncos’ newly-minted XIIth head coach was in regards to his sideline attire.

“Will I wear a hoodie?  Absolutely,” he said. “I can’t wait to see my hoodie.”

Star-divide

And that was the most specific answer that Josh McDaniels gave at his introductory press conference.  I know little more about him now than I did from his sketch biography page on Patriots.com or the press release issued by the Broncos earlier in the day.

But this is the way of the Belichick school.  While McDaniels offered the assurance to observers that his coaching style was "different" than Foxborough’s Grandmaster B, and that he "can smile," his press conference offered more indications other than that what little is open about the doings at Dove Valley is about to be closed.

McDaniels was sparse on specifics, almost maddeningly so.   But this is not to be interpreted as a scuff mark on the shiny new coach.

One could only be disappointed if they came into the day expecting a manifesto as detailed as Marx’s.  All you can reliably take from these exercises is the occasional glimpse into the coach’s personality and an interpretation of statements, mannerisms and inflections, which can diverge wildly among otherwise agreeable and rational people.   What comes across as confident to some is viewed as cocky by others.

Monday, McDaniels' most glaring attribute appeared to be the absence of relevant details to the job that awaits him.  Oh, sure, there were the tales of a childhood spent at training camp: "I’ve been going to two-a-days since I was five years old," he told the breathless masses watching in person, on-line and on television.

(But not, it must be noted, the NFL Network.  The same broadcast outlet which aired every syllable of the Bowlen/Shanahan extravaganza of emotions opted only to air a snippet or two of McDaniels’ career valedictory speech, even though it took place when it was airing live analysis.  Moral of the story?  Don’t introduce your new coach on the same day of the retirement of a universally-respected potential Hall of Famer – who happens to be the first African-American to win a Super Bowl and the first coach of any color to have playoff appearances in 10 consecutive seasons.)

Perhaps the NFL Network knew by McDaniels' pedigree what was coming from the half-hour he spent at the Dove Valley lectern.  There would have been little purpose in airing these words coast-to-coast; they were sufficiently bland.  Nothing for a Coors Light commercial here.

"We’re going to be as precise as we can," he said early in the question-and-answer session.  If the goal was to be precisely vague, then this statement is correct.

We know that he admires his mentors.  We know that he felt the Broncos were tough opposition over the years, something made clear by Mike Shanahan’s 5-2 record in head-to-head games against Bill Belichick.  We know that he has some familiarity with members of the Broncos’ coaching staff; we don’t know which members he’s talking about.   We know not McDaniels’ defensive coordinator, but we know that he has spoken with Mike Nolan.

("I have had discussions with Mike Nolan," McDaniels said. "But nothing has been official yet."  I hope he means that the potential hiring is not official.  If it is the discussions that are unofficial, then the statement is simply bizarre.)

Then there was his discussion of coaching mentors.  He mentioned Belichick and Charlie Weis, but one notes that he seemed to go out of his way to cite Nick Saban.  Were McDaniels taking over as Buff boss in Boulder, this sentiment would be reassuring; but for matters at Dove Valley, it could be chilling, given Saban’s spectacular flameout as an NFL boss.

One sentence of McDaniels’ opening statement stood out: "I want this team tough, smart and prepared to play well under pressure."  It appears this statement was prepared, as it was delivered resolutely, without hesitation or stammer.  It’s a good opening.  It’s what fans want to hear.  But I leave the day not knowing how he will make them tougher, smarter and ready for crunch time.

Later, McDaniels discussed the defense, but did so haltingly, delivering the following words with pauses and stammers, as though he needed to ponder his philosophy on the fly:

"First of all, I’d say as much as I’ve coached offense, that I’m a football coach that’s been built to understand defense.  That’s where I learned my foundation.  We will attack people offensively ... I think my goal as a head coach is not just to improve the defense; it’s to improve the team. There’s areas where it can improve offensively, defensively and in the kicking game."

It would have been nice to know what these specific areas are, considering that he studied the Broncos enough to sway the decision-making conglomerate of the law firm-esque Bowlen, Ellis, Goodman, Goodman and Xanders.

(Which, appropriately, has a pair of lawyers in Jeff Goodman and Bowlen.)

But one can reliably tell that he loves his wife, as he thanked her for the sacrifices that a coach’s spouse must invariably make to the total commitment a life in the sport demands.  One can also sense that he is enthusiastic, although he will likely need to possess a different locker-room demeanor if he is to truly inspire.

But it is doubtful we will see what the tenor of his interactions with players is like.  We’ve seen him interact with Tom Brady and Matt Cassel on the sidelines.  But we haven’t heard what he’s said, and we certainly have no idea whether he can motivate a team that has some young players, but still possesses leaders like Champ Bailey and Casey Wiegmann whose NFL experience matches or exceeds his own.

We don’t know a damn thing.

What can be inferred is that those who cover the team are in for culture shock.  Shanahan’s way was to illuminate bits and pieces; he would sometimes acknowledge in advance when players were certain to miss a game, and could be forthright and candid, particularly in his Monday press conferences that followed his breakdown of game film. One senses there will be no such openness from McDaniels, leaving it among us to discuss and debate.

He will therefore be judged on Sundays and Sundays alone, leaving the details of his coming stewardship to be gathered from the disgruntled, disaffected and those forcibly distanced from Dove Valley as they are purged to make way for the new regime, and swept away like lint off a well-worn, haphazardly-tailored hoodie.

Which we know he’ll wear.

And that’s all we know for certain about what the McDaniels era will bring.

He should wear the hoody like a Jedi.

McDaniels was the best option for this team. You CAN NOT overfocus on the defense and possibley have Jeremy Bates not progress with Cutler. McDaniels will watch over both sides of the ball, especially the O, while letting a defensive guy handle the D along with an intelligent GM.

Fortunately, McDaniels does not fit into this description:

“A Jedi must have the deepest commitment, the most serious mind. This one a long time have I watched. All his life has he looked away… to the future, to the horizon. Never his mind on where he was. Hmm? What he was doing.”

His mind was definitely on what he was doing during last year’s postseason, because as he said:

“I think last year the timing wasn’t right for me. Our season we were having was a little different than the one this year. Not making the playoffs allowed me to get into this process right away, as soon as the season ended. I’ve spent a lot of time and preparation since last season getting myself ready to go in case this opportunity presented itself again.”

Hopefully he more Obi-Wan and Yoda than the rabble of helpless Jedi who couldn’t escape their doom when Order 66 was issued.

Drawing conclusions
One senses there will be no such openness from McDaniels, leaving it among us to discuss and debate.

I’m not sure how you can reliably draw such a conclusion from this press conference. He hasn’t had a chance to talk to any of the existing staff and make those decisions. He hasn’t talked to the players. It’s clear that he did some amount of preparation before his interviews, but he certainly hasn’t done the kind of evaluation he can only do by being inside the organization, being able to actually talk to players and coaches, etc. He was vague because he had to be vague. Doesn’t mean that won’t continue, but I don’t see how we can know one way or the other from the introductory press conference.

Good counterpoint

What we have, though, is a coach who says he’s drawn from Weis, Belichick and Saban. None are known for being publicly forthright:

And as I wrote:

“McDaniels was sparse on specifics, almost maddeningly so. But this is not to be interpreted as a scuff mark on the shiny new coach.”

These are just observations. Again, as I wrote, he will be judged on Sundays and Sundays alone. Although I probably should have added “Mondays” and “Thursdays” and “Saturdays” since hopefully he will succeed and have the Broncos playing in prime-time on plenty of occasions.

Just a little more detail … there’s a great deal not yet known about McDaniels. And I admit that I am somewhat skeptical. Just as any movie can look great in the previews, any coach can look like Lombardi or Shula in the opening press conference. But I am willing to be convinced by his work to come.

What else should we know?

We also know that McDaniels wants to do a lot more studying and evaluating of all facets of the Denver Broncos and their personnel before committing to anything specific. What else could he tell us at this point? Let’s allow him at least to find where his office and the restrooms are before we become too demanding of specifics . . .

The final nail in the coffin of the Shanahan era

Tom Nalen and Mike Shanahan close out 2008 together, one master of the zone blocking scheme the other a master of its execution. The spread offense will not be, in all likely hood, the zone blocking scheme that has been a staple of Bronco football for decades, it truly is the end of an era.

by firstfan on Jan 12, 2009 10:42 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Firstfan, I am certainly not certain! :)

but all signs seem to point to a change in offensive philosophy. With Dennison applying for positions with different teams and the fact that when asked how Cutler is going to like the new system it seems there may be internal talk that we don’t know about.

While Bobby Turner teaches the RB’s he doesn’t teach the line techniques so if Dennison does leave who would that leave us to carry on the ZB scheme?

The Patriots don’t run a ZB scheme and from the Hoodie to the philosophy it looks like we got Belicheck Jr.

by Steve O' on Jan 13, 2009 5:38 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Not sure

He did make mention in the presser that he hadn’t decided either way on the ZB scheme, but that if you see something that works, you’d be crazy to mess with it. I think his words were something to the effect of it being necessary to “steal other people’s ideas in this league.” To me, that spoke directly to the running game here. He may use it differently than Shanny did, but I think (along with Bowlen’s love for Bobby Turner) he’ll keep the basics in place.

something about Jay having to learn a new scheme and that he should like it (sounds like he will be focusing more on the pass), but I’m not sure that means the end of the ZB-one cut rushing attack.

I think it was just an introduction

Clearly McDaniels isn’t accustomed to public speaking, and I’d imagine he either doesn’t have a lot of details to give his first day on the job and/or doesn’t want to show his hand on what little he does know yet.

I don’t think we learned a lot today either, except as I mentioned, that Josh McDaniels is not accustomed to public speaking.

And, he smacks his lips a lot. I really hope that’s just a nervous tic that will go away when he’s more comfortable here. Man, that got old fast.

But, it’s nice to get a look at the guy and see him interact with the local press for the first time. I am looking forward to learning more in the coming days and weeks, and getting an idea – as the combine, free agency, etc approach – as to what kind of character this team is going to have from the top down.

I have a feeling it’ll be positive. Should be interesting, at least.

by TheMastermind on Jan 12, 2009 9:19 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

He got an introduction to Woody, that's for sure

Also, I read everyone’s comments during the presser yesterday about the smacking lips and I didn’t even notice it until I watched part of the re-air on NFLN this morning (TD wasn’t impressed with the hiring), then it was pretty obvious (probably because I was looking/listening for it).

Those 5 win teams in 1968, 1969, and 1970 were considered the high point on Saban era in Denver. He was overrated and ran out some studs in Denver like Lionel Taylor, Willie Brown, Goose Gonsulin, and many more. He could never get the team to buy into his scheme.

My impression

I left the presser knowing one thing, it was the day before his first day on the job. He hasn’t talked to the staff or players yet, he hasn’t even gotten a chance to sit at his desk. There’s your reason he didn’t have any specifics about going forward. Honestly, given that, I’d be more worried if he would’ve unloaded a bunch of detailed information about what he was going to do. To me, that would mean he had no intention of listening to anyone else, he had all the solutions already, etc. etc. I believe he’s going to honestly evaluate the current staff and find out who he can work with, who fits where and who’s willing to stay. At the same time, he’s going to get himself a defensive staff in place. Obviously, even though it appears Nolan is the DC, nothing has been finalized there yet. Maybe today? Then, I think he’s going to get as much info on the players as he can, through film, staff before he meets with them (he has awhile before they got together).

Basically, I didn’t expect a ton of details or even much in the way of philosophical ideas, it would’ve been somewhat irresponsible and immature of him to do so. It’s impossible to unsay something. With that in mind, I found it surprising that both he and Bowlen had as much to say about Nolan as they did.

And as for the hoodie, I hope he overcomes that flaw. As long as he doesn’t cut the sleeves off, I may be able to stomach it, but I’d love to see Nolan talk him into donning the suit.

Great Points

There’s nothing wrong with being careful and tight-lipped when you are just starting a new job especially as a youngster. I have a feeling that if he would have said more about his philosophies toward the new job, the presser would have gone into the wee hours with the media demanding more and more information that they could then use against him later when he finds out that (possibly) his ideas weren’t implementable or didn’t gel with the current coaches/players.

what pubkeeper had to say. I signed up intending to say it was a little premature to say that the new coach was going to be tight-lipped because he failed to give specifics and I’d be worried if he had all these grand schemes already hatched, but pubkeeper already said all that. I would like to say that if being tight-lipped equates with keeping the opponent off-balance and generates wins, then I don’t care if he ever opens his mouth again.

After seeing what the bolts did

when they acquired Michael Bennett when they didn’t have a need and we did, I wouldn’t want McD to give them any thing for consideration.

If he had come out and say that we are going to move to a 3-4 defense and are looking for a strong NT either through the draft or FA, I wouldn’t put it past AJ Smith to make taking all the NTs off the board just to make sure that we wouldn’t get any.
