So, we have a coach.....Now What???
|
|
Time has seemed to be at a stand-still the past couple weeks since the news came across that Mike Shanahan was not going to be retained. In the blog/fan-site world, the end of the season brings ample opportunities to write about what went wrong, where the team can improve, who might be brought in to help, etc. The Broncos, for the past 15 years, have been a standard of consistency and stability, at least at the top, which made what we here at MHR do year in and year out pretty stable as well. That all changed on December 30th, and until yesterday we have been a 24/7 coaching search web-site.
Thankfully, that has come to an end. Now that we know Josh McDaniels will be the man to lead the Broncos into the future, along with Mike Nolan on the defensive side of the ball, we can jump with both feet into the pool of "Re-Loading Season 2009". More on that later.
First, I want to welcome all the new members of MileHighReport.com. The site has been generating alot of interest, especially during the past couple weeks, and we are glad to have you. Should you have any questions, comments, complaints, or suggestions for the website, please e-mail me at milehighreport@gmail.com. This site, from Day 1 was created to provide Denver Broncos fans from all over the world a positive place to talk Denver Broncos football. I feel we have done just that and will continue to fill the void left by an ever-decreasing main-stream-media(MSM).
Remember, every member here at MHR is part of the commentary, using the FanPost and FanShot sections. You are all part of the coverage of the team. I feel we have the finest contributers on the web, but what makes HR great is the contributions we get from everyone, whether you have been a member since 2006 or signed up last night. Have an opinion, write a FanPost about it. See a link to Broncos news, post a FanShot. Read an interesting quote, FanShot it. Just be a part of what we are doing and fear not the dreaded "Message Board guy". Post-count, length of membership or "reputation points" do not equal your football IQ around here. We want your opinion.
That leads me into what you can expect from MileHighReport as we head into Re-Loading Season 2009. Here are just a few of the features you can look for --
- The Greatest Broncos of All-Time -- By The Numbers -- A look at Broncos greats through the years based on the jersey number they wore. Starting at 00 and heading all the way to 99.
- MHR University - With a new coach there will likely be a new scheme. All signs point to the Broncos moving towards a 3-4 defense, and Josh McDaniels isn't a West Coast Offense guy. What does it mean for the Broncos? MHR University will have the answers.
- NFL Draft 2009 -- The crown jewel of the 2009 Re-Loading season, there will be more to come in the coming days so I don;t want to spoil the surprise. Just rest assured that MHR will be your only destination for Broncos Draft Coverage.
- MHR History -- A look back at the lives and times of Broncos players from the past. There is much more to the history of the Orange and Blue than John Elway and Terrell Davis and we prove it!
Those are just a few. Everything you enjoy about MileHighReport will still be here, including all the features you have come to enjoy. The football off-season is the longest in sports. MHR has you covered.

Fantastic
The Offseason has gone so much faster the last 2 years since I’ve found MHR. The podcasts and great analysis make the weeks and workdays fly by much better, and keep me excited 365 days a year.

Amen to that.
It seemed like the off season used to just drag on and on and on, before MHR. Now, we can spend that time chatting with other Bromnco fans and learning at the feet of some of SBNation’s finest.
If this be Hell, let us make the most of it!

Not that I'm not glad for MHR...
But I think it makes the offseason seem longer.
It creates too much excitement and anticipation for the upcoming season…I’m like a kid waiting for Christmas for 9 months.

Glad to know there'll be a lot of stuff going on...
It’s so weird to think there are only THREE games left before the season is over…after which we enter the dark ages between the Super Bowl and baseball season. I’m going back to school in a week here, though, so hopefully I’ll be too busy to notice…

I thought baseball season was the dark ages (between football seasons).

This is The Hub
Anything and everything you need to know about the Broncos will be found or linked here. JohnnyB and staff have put together THE Bronco news and opinion site on the web.
Scroll to the bottom of the page to see the rest of the cast of characters that keep this site running.
As for the people who post here, there’s no place better. You get a wide variety of opinions, and the disagreements are kept respectful. Plus, there is a lack of the sheer idiocy that you see in most of the Comments sections around the web.
Overall, this is a stellar place worthy of at least a daily check-in, even during the slow and painful Reloading season.

A lot of it is that we have the best bloggers of any site I’ve seen. People on theory, Ted and his game analysis, HT’s incredible volumic knowledge, styg’s writting skill and insights, etc, etc. But it’s the day to day posters like yourself that really take this to its highest level, so pat yourselves on the back.

Stay positive man. Stay positive.
I’ve already heard two douchebags on ESPN give reasons why Sharpe doesn’t deserve to get in. Yet they went on to say Derrick Thomas was a sure bet. The reason is that Sharpe should be measured up to other WR’s, not other TE’s. I just don’t get it. They give us the reason why certain old time Broncos don’t get in is because of a lack of championships, then they give a lack of stats to TD. Sharpe has both the stats and three championships….if he doesn’t get in I will write the nastiest letter and send it to every damn sports writer on Earth. (I omitted something else that could have gotten me in trouble…Big Brother is watching) lol
Oh yeah…STAY POSITIVE bfsisd….everyone, think happy thoughts!

2009
I’m actually excited to watch the Broncos again. During the past few years I found myself turning the TV off in second or third quarter of Broncos games because I could see the impending collapse of the defense.
I look forward to new faces in the starting defensive lineup. Wouldn’t mind seeing Champ and DJ move on their way. I’d like to see a new defensive mindset and fresh, hungry players that want to get to the QB, tackle running backs, cause fumbles, and intercept passes.
It should be fun to witness the rebuilding of the defense. I hope Mike Nolan is up to the task.

Thank you, Guru...
I have only been a member of MHR since last April. My thought at the time was “Wow, I love Metsblog, I wish there was a Broncos site as good as Metsblog. Gee, maybe I’ll create one on my own if there’s nothing out there.” Next thing you know, I stumbled upon MHR and I was blown away. This is BY FAR, the best sports blog I have encountered. Perhaps I’m biased because it covers my favorite team, but MHR is without peer. I have learned more about football in the past 9 months than I probably learned in the prior 20 years. The posts, commentary and discourse are beyond intelligent and nothing less than fascinating. Thanks to all of my fellow readers/posters. You make this a wonderful site to visit. And by the way, this site blows Metsblog out of the water. It isn’t even close.

I stumbled here by accident.
Around the draft last year. I was searching for info on our draft picks and found Styg’s excellent commentary. I was hooked.
And I agree that this site blows any other SBN site out of the water. I have yet to encounter a sports blog with this kind of membership; steady, smart, and more than willing to share some info for any fan of any team. This site truly is without peer. Seriously, look at our gentlemanly discourse in the comments section and compare it to comments on sites like Youtube or ESPN. None of those idiots here.
BTW, MHR might have a new member by the end of the day. I’ll get back to you on that later…

Probably should have a free agent primer too
It will be interesting to see what effect McDaniels has on bringing in free agents, will we spend big or will we go for the New England model and find good role players.

Good idea
The Broncos approach to free agency is (thankfully) no doubt going to change. With that coming up in February it would be cool to take a knowledgeable look at who’s out there and where they might (or might not) fit into the new Broncos landscape.
Should be an interesting offseason, I sure look forward to it.

I'm both anxious and excited
Excited because the defense will probably be better next year, and the offense at least as good. Shanahan didn’t have much feel for defense, either coaching it or selecting defensive coaches and players, so as his control became more total the chances of anyone else’s expertise mitigating his weakness lessened and his defenses got progressively worse. Just putting the final say-so on personnel decisions in Jim Goodman’s hands makes a big difference, but Bowlen probably couldn’t have done it and kept Shanahan. I was initially concerned about McDaniels’ lack of defensive background, but I’ve since learned that he coached the secondary for a couple of years and got rave reviews, plus he insists, and I’m willing to take it on faith for now, that under Bellichick he was steeped in a defensive approach to the game.
I wanted Spagnuolo because I thought he would make our defense more aggressive, more effective, and more exciting, and that Dennison and company could keep the offense going. But just as a weak defensive head coach will eventually end up with a poor defense, regardless of the players and coaches he starts out with, neither will an offense continue to roll, even with good players and coaches in place, if the head coach is weak offensively. And we have no idea how good a both-sides-of-the-ball coach Spags will turn out to be. I think Bowlen’s thinking is that not only will McDaniels be able to develop and sustain a better defense than Spags will an offense, but that he has developed so rapidly that he’s more capable of running the whole show and having a winning program. Whatever Slowik’s sins I suspect the passiveness of our defense started at the top, that Shanahan the offensive gambler had a prevent-defense mindset on the other side of the ball. I think McDaniels and therefore his coaches and players will be more aggressive defenders. So I’m belatedly encouraged that even with the hiring of an “offensive” head coach we’ll start moving in the right direction on defense.
But I’m also anxious. During the Shanahan years the quality of the Denver ground game has been a trademark, something fans of other teams recognize and even envy. It’s been fun to learn and talk about the zone blocking system and the attributes running backs need to succeed in it. It’s something to be proud of, and it’s been a constant. If we go to a more traditional scheme, and if our running game becomes more like New England’s has been, marginally effective, I’ll miss that sense of having something unique and special that other teams don’t have. But the point of the offense is to score points, and the point of the defense is to prevent it, and if the Broncos do that well enough I’m sure I’ll learn to appreciate whatever personality and characteristics the team takes on under McDaniels.
Despite the uncertainty one thing’s for sure. Given that they’re undoubtedly going to be spent on defense,
I feel better not having those nine draft choices at the mercy of Shanahan’s last word. That as much as anything else makes me think that replacing Shanahan at this time, after he’s rebuilt the offense but before he has a chance to miss on his defensive picks, was a wise move. Shanahan’s downfall was that he didn’t make his weak side stronger. McDaniels’ strength may be that he’s brilliant offensively like Shanahan, but isn’t so drastically weak on the other side of the ball: Shanahan 2.0!

Idea for Article
I will be graduatating from CSU this spring and after that I will move out of state. For the first time since ‘91 I won’t be able to watch every Broncos game on regular tv.
I know there are a lot of fans out of state. Could somebody write an article about the pros and cons of the options for watching the Broncos while living out of CO and the surrounding areas?
by jwkcsu on Jan 13, 2009 2:37 PM MST reply actions 0 recs
I've always lived out of state....
just don’t move to the West Coast. Unless you like watching the faders and forty-whiners. I watch every Bronco game online through certain websites that offer up free links(not sure what they do is legal, but I love the Broncos too much to miss any game). The only draw back is the video quality sucks, but it’s better than watching NFL.com and waiting for those slow updates to come along. ;-) I will not reveal which websites I was talking about since I no longer promote any site that the NFL is actively trying to destroy. They have every right to be upset about it, but I will always be searching for ways to watch my favorite team play. I do not have DirecTV and the NFL was foolish to market their product through just one small outlet like that.

I don't know those web sites...
but I occasionally resort to a sports bar. Granted, not many Bronco fans to schmooze with.

drinking a beer in my own home with some friends is much more desirable to me over the cramped noisey smelly bar. :)

With you on that one
never been into the bar scene. Which surprises most people since my Uncle owns a club in town and I just turned 21, only been there once.

I agree
I don’t like to watch the game at the bar either. I do like to have a beer at the bar and watch the honeys though.

The one nice thing about California
is that there’s no smoking in the bars (not to start a debate)!
When I lived in the Springs, my wife could always tell when I stopped by a particular bar on the way home from work since she could smell the “ashtray” coming in the house.

Well if I lived in Alaska, I'd probably frequent more bars as it would be a good place to keep warm as well as get drunk. :)

Por Que?
McDaniels was the best option for this team. You CAN NOT overfocus on the defense and possibley have Jeremy Bates not progress with Cutler. McDaniels will watch over both sides of the ball, especially the O, while letting a defensive guy handle the D along with an intelligent GM.

Awesome site Guru, but you know that.
You have certainly made this site grow with your TV spots. MHR just keeps getting better and better. Thanks to all the members for all the intelligent posts.
I was excited for last year to start and now that we have a new coach, who will hopefully help us get an identity, I can’t wait to see what is going to happen.

Do you think this should be a concern?
I wonder why we haven’t heard from Jay yet about this hiring. I like Jay and think he can be one of the greatest but it seems like his attitude lately is kind of non chalant, like who cares. Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t he quickly jolted out of Denver on that Monday and basically was like I’m out of here. Didn’t even come back for Shanahan’s conference or show up for McDaniels conference. I think a leader should be at those events. Am I wrong???
by FLCubsGirl on Jan 13, 2009 7:45 PM MST reply actions 0 recs
Good question.
Jay’s a little surly. I have been trying to remember a QB with this attitude, and today I finally realized, Cutler reminds me not of Elway, not of Favre, not of anyone really. Of all QBs, I think his personality most closely resembles Joe Namath. But, hey, I could be wrong.

nnnnoooooooo! not joe. say it isn't so.
namath’s career in 3 steps:
1. overrated, due to the “guarantee” he was pressed into after a few beers. defense and k turner won the sb with 3 fg and a td run. unitas played hurt, and morral threw 3 picks. “broadway joe” was an act.
2. he not only shaved his legs and wore pantyhose, he advertised for it on tv. like a girl does. ummm… tough guy?
3. back to the beers, he tries to kiss suzy colber(why would you want to do that?), in about the funniest piece of jets history in a very funny history.
i rest my case. please jay, don’t grow up to be a namath

I read somewhere
that he wasn’t in town and that’s why McD hasn’t had a chance to meet with him, yet.
I agree that if he’s to be a leader of the team that he should have been there for both Shanahan’s and McDaniels’ pressers.
I remember seeing photos of Shanny talking to BMarsh before or after he was at the podium. I guess that makes sense since BMarsh lives in Highlands Ranch. I’m not sure if Jay has a place in town or if he goes back to Santa Claus…

Papi is just insane

Every voice is unique
the structure inherent in the sbnation platform is key to keeping the voices from all mingling into one. It treats every individual member as if they were doing their own blog, at what ever pace is right for them. That is a great start to forming strong, healthy communities.
I am lucky and happy to have found it and be a part of it.
Did you know there are Broncos fans out there that have no clue that this place exists? Our work has only just begun…

Pats fan here. Seeing as the Broncos just hired our old offensive coordinator, I’ll be keeping an eye on your team this upcoming season to see how things go. Good luck on the upcoming season (except when you play the Pats, of course).

Good to hear from you NESilver. And thanks for the coach! I think we will see great things from McDaniels. Good luck when you play the Broncos, but keep in mind we have a little payback to give from last season’s debacle.
