Broncos Give Bates Permission to Talk to...Raiders?!?
Okay...I know that not everyone (myself included) are very fond of PFT. I don't know how true this is. I wonder if/how this will affect Jay Cutler. I for one believe that McDaniel's and Bates will have a hard time co-existing. What are your thoughts? Would love to hear from all you "Akamai" Bronco Fans!

A little more reliable source
The RMN is also saying this.
Of the Big 3, Dennison, Bates and Turner, I think Bates would be the easiest to part with. As soon as Big Mac said without hesitation he was calling plays next season, the writing was on the wall for Jeremy. As promising as he is, I think McDaniels track record with Cassell speaks for itself.
They MUST keep Dennison and Turner, though.

I think Dennison is gone
I just don’t know how you keep someone who was “technically” the OC and interviewed for the job and has ties to Shanahan, I could see it causing a wedge in the team, especially if the offense sputters or has problems.

Yup
I can’t see Dennison staying. Hopefully they keep Turner though.
I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

Maybe now they'll name Dennison the OC.
With no Bates in his way, why not?

Good suggestion
Not too bummed about Bates – for all the yards we had on offence, we shure had a hard time scoring. That has got to be playcalling.

or no running game?
It gets alot harder to throw once the field shrinks in the RZ.
Also, Bates is very young, at 32, and show a tremendous amount of potential. Plus, Cutler has made it clear that he wants him around. I think Bowlen and McDaniels need to find a way to accomodated Bates.

i disagree
I know I advocate of DJ staying on the weak side, cuz I think he is better suited for that. But if came down to it and he makes Denver better at the SAM I am all for it. But it unnerves me that a lot of people are saying well what does Jay think or they need to keep Bates? Why exactly does Bates need to stay. If in essence McD and bates are the same let Bates walk, I would not care. If he stays cool, but I dont want to see the inmates run the asylum. Jay is paid to play QB for the Broncos, no matter who is the HC or OC.

In his first year calling plays Bates led the Broncos to the number two overall NFL offense.
Sure there was room for improvement…but that’s a pretty darn good starting point.
I agree that a QB shouldn’t run a team; however, he should have a say just like any company’s employees should have a say.
What happens to a company that ignores the wants and needs of its employees? Think Hindenburg.

no
I think of the Cowboys who are ran by TO and JJ. The Hindenburg (as was all Zeppelins) was run by the Nazis as a propaganda tool, so I dont see how that is good analogy.
But sure Denver was #2 in total offense but 16th in points scored. Too me points scored trumps total yardage. Remember McD is a year removed from being a OC that scored 75 tds and over 570 points, and this year a team with a career back up as QB scored 410 points and was 8th in scoring. So I am not in the “we need to keep Bates” camp, not even close. I know injuries played a part, but it seems to me Denver abandoned the running game too often this past season

The analogy is: companies that ignore their employees will crash and burn just like the Hindenberg did.
McDaniels may come from a great offense…but we brought him in to run the whole team.
He still needs someone to head up the offense and Bates seems like as good a candidate as any to me. Especially considering some of the insight that McDaniels brings from the Pats and that Bates brings from Shanahan…Bates and JoshMac might work extremely well together.

I agree
Everyone is sending Bates on his merry way, but it could be something special to have two up and coming offensive wunderkids staying up till all hours of the night creating a hybrid of the two systems. If Bates and MickeyD can make the relationship work, I think the Broncos are better off.
Maybe between the two of them they can get Cutler’s head out of his butt and teach him how to lead instead of sulking like a spurned teenager.

Cutler needs to deal and do his job. The only reason Bates would go would be because McDaniels has something better for Cutler.

Interesting
Like I said, I figured when McDaniels said he would call the plays, Bates days in Denver were over, I expected him to possibly land in Houston or maybe even New England, I am wondering if Davis wants to make him a Head Coach, a sad fate for that man indeed.

Bates would be a damn fool to go to the Raiders.
McDaniels did the smart thing coming to Denver because its an organization with a tradition of winning. The raiders have a tradition of licking Al Davis’ boot heel.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Bates ends up in New England taking McDaniels job, I know Bilichick had problems with Shanahan’s game plans, so I am sure he may want a couple of years to pick Bates brain.

My logic with that statement is that only a damn fool would take a job for Al Davis, so if Bates did take a job for him then I’ll be happy because I wouldn’t want any damn fools on our own coaching staff.

I read somewhere today that all assistants....
have been given permission to interview anywhere they want. This may just be PFBS and RMN stirring up trouble. Also, remember that Al Davis has ALWAYS interviewed young, upcoming offensive assistants from the AFC West, if for no other reason than to gain intel on the other teams. I’m not too worried about this yet.

Bates leaving
would be good to reduce friction between Mac and Cut.
McDaniels was the best option for this team. You CAN NOT overfocus on the defense and possibley have Jeremy Bates not progress with Cutler. McDaniels will watch over both sides of the ball, especially the O, while letting a defensive guy handle the D along with an intelligent GM.

Dennison as OC
It’s not only important to keep Dennison as OC but also for the OL that he has built by working with 3 young players and 2 veterans. If we want consistency in the offense, we have to keep that unit intact – and he is their leader. If he is the “OC” as he was last year and Bates is not on the team, I bet that there will be more running plays mixed into the passing attack. It looks likethis might be the direction that Mac is going.

Why not Bobby Turner as OC???
He has intimate knowledge of the running scheme and blocking scheme….he would be a great fit if Jedi McD is calling plays!

Not sure if this is true
But for some reason I have this impression of Turner as the guy the players confide in and who was a buffer of sorts. Maybe it is because there had to be trust between him and the offensive players he was responsible for rotating during games. He probably can’t (or shouldn’t) maintain that relationship if he is the OC. We definitely need to keep Turner and I don’t think I would be a bad OC, but I think his value to the Broncos is maximized with his current role.
by MattR on Jan 13, 2009 10:39 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
Yes
And I think he knows what his strength is and he likes what he does. Turner doesn’t strike me as an ego or power guy wanting to run an offense. He’s good at coaching RBs and he knows it. It is like me and IT work…yeah, I can manage and I can communicate well, but I do my best hands-on with technology (plus computers don’t talk back and if they do you just format those biznatchawitches).

I don't know why everyone is assuming that there will be tension between Bates, McDaniels, Dennison, and Cutler.
They might work extremely well together. I, for one, am excited at the prospect of all these great offensive minds potentially working together on playcalling and design.

by PosterNutbag on Jan 13, 2009 7:17 PM MST reply actions 0 recs
I agree with you
I don’t know that everyone can work together, but I am not assuming that they can’t. Josh McDaniels is going to bring in new ideas and a new way of doing things, possibly including a different structure to his staff. I think there is room for everyone to have an important contributing role, but it will probably be less than in 2008 so I can understand any of the Broncos coaches exploring other options. Even if Shanahan had stayed, there was going to be eventual “tension” between Bates and Dennison as only one could/can be in charge of the offense.
Speaking of which, I think we all kind of forget how unique the Broncos structure is with Dennison as OC (and in charge of the running game) but Bates calling the plays (and in charge of the pass). In fact I have been wondering if one of the problems this year was that Bates did not feel comfortable adjusting the running game on the fly and would just abandon it instead. With McDaniels calling the plays in 2009 that will definitely not be a problem, but it does make me wonder what special role/responsibilities the person with the title “offensive coordinator” will have compared to the other offensive coaches.

You're making very good points
Some of the playcalling was strange, we have generally agreed. Giving Bates the responsibility might have been premature, if that’s what did happen (Shanahan was fond of misdirection). If it was Bates, he had trouble using the sparse running game we had.
I look forward to having McD call the plays. The OC (currently Dennison) should collect any input (or they can and should all meet, whatever works), McD and he should decide what the system is going to be and McD should call the plays. Given what he’s done in NE, will anyone argue that Bates is better suited? Other than Bates, I would suppose…
