Names You Will Be Seeing in Mock Drafts Everywhere
With the Draft right around the corner keep your eyes peeled for the following reports. They may introduce a group of prospects by position (such as 3-4 nosetackles), or by status (top ten prospects), or even by noteworthiness, such as this report on some of the names you are most likley to hear in conjuction with Broncos Mocks across the web.
But where these reports gain most of their power is from YOU the community. If you follow the prospect's links within the report, you will find yourself at their "official" MHR page, filled with all the relevant data, insight and information you have come to expect from the MHR community, gathered in one tidy place and updated regularly, making MHR your first stop for an informed opinion on these prospects, and just maybe, your ONLY stop.

Why?
We were a winning team even with last year’s defense when we could run the ball consistently. Aside from Hillis, is there any back that you can count on? Additionally, it’s a 2 back league. Will Torain come back healthy? Pittman coming back?
I think we have more pressing needs, but if we don’t want Rey Rey, there isn’t a good DT at 12, and we need a RB?

I'm not saying we shouldn't fix it
quite the contrary. I’m just saying that we don’t necessarily have to spend our #1 pick on defense. I’d like to, but I can also see where we don’t if we don’t get good value there as I said above.

I doubt that we would draft a RB with the 1st pick
NE got burned with Maroony and have done fine with scrub guys, I think it will be defense heavy all the way.

Great stuff, as always.
And I’m sure that’s a surprise coming from me, considering I’ve been such a grump around these parts lately. I know this team needs defense first, but I don’t think Raji is worth the 12th pick, and I think out of the guys you listed, the two who I think we have a real shot at that I would love at that position are Laurinaitis and Moreno. Considering how bad the defense has been, I know it seems nuts to take a RB with the first pick, but I’m not as sold on Hillis as everyone else seems to be.

Not sold on Hillis!? That’s just crazy-talk!
:)
I’d be curious to hear more of the whys on this. What aren’t you sure of? Hillis is MONEY!
I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

Hillis
I think it depends on what you are looking for in a RB. If you want a guy with all the moves and break away speed who’s a threat to go the distance every time he touches the ball, I can see why you wouldn’t be sold on Hillis. But, if you want a guy who is always going to go forward, a guaranteed 3-4 yd pickup every time he touches the ball, putting you in 2nd and 3rd and short situations, securing the ball, moving the chains, pulling the safety down toward the LOS, then Hillis is your man.
It’s the classic Barry Sanders vs. TD argument. Although Barry made all the ESPN highlights, I’d take TD every time. Barry (similar to Adrian Peterson now) always had this stat line 3 yds., 2, -3, 4, 2, 1, 73, 2, 3, 1, -5, 3, -1, etc. You get the point.

Exactly
That’s why I’m saying…what’s not to like about Hillis? We have lots of other talent that are home-run threats. Give me Hillis and the constant 3 – 6 yards he brings to the table. It opens up SOOOO much on the offensive side when you make the defense adjust to your running game.
Also Hillis has great hands and is a threat receiving out of the backfield…great things to have in McDaniels system (if past NE offense is any indication of where he will take our team…and I think it is).
I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

TD vs Barry
TD in a heartbeat. He was just something special. not only would he get positive yards at 4-5 a carry, he also was a threat to take it to the house every time he touched the ball. Hillis isn’t anywhere close to that, he’s a little bit faster, better pass catching Mike Alstott. You’re absolutely right about Barry Sanders though, he was a highlight reel who didn’t really help his team take over games.

Great posts, all
I always said that Barry was a regular season back.
I don’t think you can win in the playoffs with a running back who puts you at risk of losing yards on any given play. Now, I don’t agree that AP is this kind of back, but I get what you’re saying.
Barry can’t score with regularity on 3rd and 3 from the 3. If I had a 3rd and Goal from the 3 yard line and Tavarias Jackson as my QB, I’d want to run it. And if I had my choice of any RB in history to be my back I’d take (in no particular order):
Walter Payton
Terrell Davis
Earl Campbell
Jim Brown
Emmitt Smith
Larry Csonka
Eddie George
Kurt Warner
Marcus Allen
Bo Jackson
and I’m sure there are 20 more. But Barry Sanders would NEVER be on that list.

Are you guys serious?
Terrell Davis ran for 2000 yards with the World Champion Broncos and the greatest QB ever. Barry Sanders did it with DETROIT…
You guys are looking at his negative yards because he had to make a play or no one else did. TD was a great one cut runner and one of my all time favorite people, let alone football player, but to compare him to Barry Sanders is just laughable.
Barry was the greatest back ever, period.

Only likely if....
the Broncos address defense through free agency. If they drafted him before they got a defensively player, most of the Broncos Nation would flip out.
I have to admit, the notion of drafting him really appeals to me. He can be a great running that can make the most out of 15-20 carries, plus he has great hands that would help him fit perfectly into a Patriots style offense.
I would be really excited if we got him, but I don’t know if it’s worth the cost of a good D prospect.

that's the question...what do you value...it's a tough one
but I think we have to trade down…we have too. We need to start building, building takes draft picks…that said if Goodell says “With the 12th overall pick in the draft, the Denver Broncos select, RB from Georgia, (I will pass out then) Knowshon Moreno” I would have a smile for a while and get Knowshon jersey tomorrow!

I plan on creating profile pages
for every player that catches the MHR faithful eye, this is just an introduction to what it is capable of. My next group is going to be the players already profiled by you and others, like Hill and Greene.
These pages will really pick up steam once the combine and proday numbers are in, and once the senior bowl gets played. The big key is it makes all the work done by the community less perishable by creating a place within a place where those references can always be, well, referred to! :)

-Shonn Greene, RB, Iowa
-Javon Ringer, RB, Michigan State
-Brandon Merriweather, LB, Mizzou
-Sen’Derrick Marks, DT, Auburn? (I’m not sure whether he declared)
-Terrance Cody, DT, Somewhere (Not sure if he declared either)
I would be more than happy to help you with some of the research. I don’t know how you find the time to do all these. Just don’t let me do any of the charts.

Who knows what can happen by April. Draft stocks rise and fall. Players retire. There’s a small chance he could fall. Not likely, but January is for dreaming ;)

he might fall to us…never know :)
This is my GAP, there are many like it but this one is mine. Without my GAP I am useless, without me, they will run through my GAP. I will protect my GAP and have my brothers back on his. I will not be moved from my GAP, I am a crazed dog that patrols this area and will defeat all who entire it. I own this GAP, it is mine. I bought it with blood and sweat. I will not be pushed. I will not be moved. This Sunday I will make a stand and a statement.

I've heard
Tebow (in this week’s SI) and Mays (NFLN crawler quoting Pete Carroll) have declared that they are returning to school next year. There are others, but those seem to be the biggest names around here that I’ve heard, so far.

The best way to do a request
would be to put up a fanpost similar to atthive’s Nosetackle post. Nothing flashy, but it generates good discussion on the prospects, (which can have the best info pulled out and added to the profile page), plus the links to good video or stats save time. You could do as many or as few prospects as you wanted ina post.
I will have profile pages prepared for all of the guys in your list soon, and anything that goes up in the fanposts leading up to the draft will get added to the pages. Draft central, which will be revealed soon will have quick links to all of this data and more, meaning that when something goes up about the draft in thefanposts, it won’t get lost or buried.
So just keep commenting and writing about the prospects you would like to see. While I have my own pieces on certain players planned, and Broncobear undoubtedly has more young players that have caught his imagination, in the end, all of our thoughts will be in the same place, and hold the same status, as all of yours: linked up in the profile pages, where they can combine to form a uniquely MHR opinion of the prospects and what they mean to Denver.
It is gonna take all of us to pull this off!

here is a link to
atthehive’s post: Nosetackles
It is a great format, it won’t bust anyone’s balls to research, and it gives all the essentials to start a good discussion. that discussion is the soil from which the great commentary on this sight grows…

Also
Brian Orakpo
Thanks to Mike Shanahan, a great coach who will be dearly missed. But...
Let's all get on the Mac Daddy Express!
Hillis for starter next year. He wears special thigh pads so his solid brass balls don't give him repeated thigh contusions.

But he will likely be gone.
Orakpo would be a good pick as well, but I think we will be gone in the top 10.

Cody is staying at Alabama.
There was a flap earlier in the year when his girlfriend put up a prank post on his fb site that he was declaring, but he fixed it and made rather assertive statements to the contrary. There’s obvious appeal in him, as he’d fill a huge need in a 3-4 (don’t pardon the pun). But if Denver decides they need him specifically, they’d best plan on setting up their draft position next year.

deadline for declaring for the draft: 5:00 PM
We’ll have a better feel for who’s available after the dust settles today. In particular, the QBs may affect our choice, since some of them will go higher than our choice if they enter.
I’ll have much more to say on this issue after today.

Sanchez declares -- on live TV
Here’s one, and that’s all there should be today (presumably), so he’s the only one that should affect our choice at #12.
Most of the picks before us will be on offense. The defensive players who should go off the boards before we pick are: Aaron Curry(OLB), Malcolm Jenkins(CB), Brian Orakpo(DE), Everette Brown(DE), and possibly Rey Maualuga(ILB), but that’s the big question.
With only 11 players chosen before our pick it would be unexpected if more than 4 defensive players went before we pick.
Here’s some who should go early: QBs – Stafford, Sanchez, OTs — Monroe, A. Smith, Oher & (possibly) J. Smith, RBs – Wells, WRs – Crabtree. That’s 7 without Jason Smith, so it looks like we’ll have a chance at Maualuga, and earlier comments about his suitability for the Broncos should ignored now since our apparent scheme change turns all those projections on their head.

other thoughts
Draft projections are ‘fuzzy’ but it’s easier to project the top of the 1st, because of team needs, general agreement on the top picks, etc.
What’s an interesting conjecture at this point is whether we can trade down. One possible trading partner would be Philadelphia, who has 2 – #1s, and needs an OT. The real question is whether they see it as important enough to trade up for one of the top OTs — who could fall to us at #12 but wouldn’t fall all the way to Philly’s picks in the 20s (still undetermined because of playoffs). It’s reasonable to assume that Philly might want to trade, and a number of the possible deals would give them a generous point bonus (see trade value chart) and leave us with a low 1st and another 2nd.
We’d probably be giving up on the big 3 MLBs (Mau, Lau and Spikes) as well as W. Moore, but we’d be in a good position to add a DT, as well as a number of starter types in the 2nd. It’s something more than idle musing now that we’re in need of more incoming players and need to revamp our defense. Converting value back into incoming talent is more important now than before the coaching change.

I think Philly's entire 1st round strategy depends on...
their decision with Dawkins. Even if they do resign him, I’d still be shocked if they didn’t spend an early pick on a FS. Unless they trade their late pick in the first for another team’s first next year, then package both to move up enough to get Mays in ‘10. This is of course just what I would be thinking if I were Philly’s GM, and is probably completely off target.
Also, are you thinking Sanchez goes in the top 11? I haven’t paid any attention to him in mocks, but it would be a complete shock to me to see him go that high. But I guess if Leinart is worth a #11, then Sanchez can be too.
From there, I'd like to say that the wheels came off, but that wouldn't feel like an accurate description. The wheels didn't just magically come off, the Raiders all got out of the car, shot the wheels off the own car, busted out the taillights, smashed the windshield and poured Splenda in the gas tank. Awesome work Styg and everyone in the comments...
Guru and Styg make a excellent points above about taking the stellar information provided in top-line posts like this— and the awesome posts by Bear, Steve O and others— to formulate your own opinions for fanposts and comments. It’s a beautiful cycle and the magic that makes this site so special.
Unfortunately, I’m not going to be able to partake in much of the exciting build-up to the draft because of the approaching tax season, but I can’t wait to see what you guys come up with. These profiles are freakin awesome. I can see this stuff keeping me up late at night over the next few months…

I think
That Maualuga may be available at 12 and if he is you guys will get him, and that’s a heck of a pick, but being a Chiefs fan, and watching you guys play, You could have won more games with Defense yes, but if you would have had a consistent run game you guys could have put a lot more teams away , so I think that RB or MLb would be smart no matter which you take. I am not trying to start anything I am just saying that i think if you take Knowshon and draft D later you guys will be hella good next year

RBs
Some of the recent RB declarations make a RB pick a higher possibility, but I think it’s going to take an unusual drop (like Mendenhall last year) before we’ll pick one in the 1st. That would also be true in the 2nd, too. There’s a chance of RB pick coming fairly early, say the 3rd if he’s the BPA, but I’ve focused on around the 4th and I think it still holds true.
I strongly agree with your reasoning, IamtheGreatest, but the argument for developing the running game could easily be used to justify taking an Offensive Lineman relatively early and taking a RB somewhat later. It’s not that I wouldn’t like a star RB, but the one-cut backs that fit into a ZB scheme aren’t the high picks that will be available at the beginning of the draft.

So you think we will still be zone blocking next season?

Yes, a ZB scheme
McDaniels has commented to the effect that New England used some ZB, or something similar to it, so I took his comment to mean he’s not interested in changing that aspect of the team. I wish I could locate the comment itself but the general thrust was that ZB is here to stay.
It also should be noted that both Turner and — probably — Dennison will be staying, and I think that’s significant, as well as important to the functioning of the running game since they comprise a large chunk of the Broncos’ institutional memory regarding ZB & the running game. The one possible change I see is a greater emphasis on the running game, which is more a play calling decision than an actual scheme change.

McDaniels on ZB
http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_11456797
“We use a lot of the same blocking schemes and run-game schemes that they’ve used,” McDaniels said. “I know they get a lot of attention for that and it’s something you don’t look to pull the plug on unless you have something better to do. So we’re going to see.”
Turner will stay, since he’s apparently accepted the offer to continue in his old post, and Dennison apperently will, too, if you read between the lines.
Running backs coach Bobby Turner, who has held that job since 1995, has been offered that role on new coach Josh McDaniels’ staff, according to an NFL source.
Turner had no comment Wednesday night.
McDaniels met with Turner and offensive line coach Rick Dennison on Tuesday. It is unclear whether Dennison has been officially offered a job in Denver, though a source said it is believed McDaniels would like Dennison to stay.
