Breaking: Bates Heading To USC
The National Football Post has just been informed that former Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Jeremy Bates has accepted an offer to become an assistant coach at the University of Southern California.
Bates, a six year NFL veteran, has spent the last three years in Denver as the quarterbacks/wide receivers coach. Prior to joining the Broncos in 2006, Bates worked for the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Atleast now Cutler won’t be tempted to leave Denver to follow Bates.

Arg.
I see this a pretty big blow…I can’t wait for next season to start, just so I can see how all of these coaching changes work out…I have feeling we’re either going to rock or get our asses kicked…ahhhh the suspense!
Bates was the liason between Cutler and Shanahan.
He was not the guy who single handedly built the passing gameplan on a weekly basis. I don’t see how this hurts Denver.
Denver’s organization, both on and off the field, was a complete disaster.
McDaniels will likely call the plays, and McCoy will help McDaniels build the offensive gameplan each week. There would never be room for Bates and Cutler needs to be stripped of all of his training wheels. He’s a Pro Bowl player who is going to be challenged under McD. McD will expect supreme knowledge of schemes, positioning, footwork, when to get rid of the ball, when to run, and how to execute. Cutler has a long way to go to be considered ‘great’ rather than ‘tons of upside’ and Bates has no history of success other than last year’s work with Shanny and Cutler.
Cutler’s not as close to Bates as we think.
Elway was closer to Kubes than Cutler was to Bates.
I AGREE, Get rid of the training wheels
only one thing to add, please teach Cutler how to sell a play action fake He does this half assed like it’s a burden.
Tactics without Strategy is the noise you hear before Defeat!
He can't be bothered by RBs
To fake it to them would acknowledge that they exist, meaning that he would have to hand the ball off for real sometime.

I guess I still haven't drunk the McD koolaid yet
Saying that the entire organization was a complete disaster is a complete overstatement. The defense and the player management, yes. But what I’m seeing now is the dismantling of an offensive coaching unit that put together a damn good season on that side of the ball this past year. But once McD was hired, I think this (Bates leaving) was inevitable, so I should just get over it.
But really, suggesting that Bates/Shanny were “training wheels” for Cutler is ridiculous. I don’t think he’ll develop any better or any faster under the new coaches. I don’t think it will actively hurt his development though. We’ll see.

we still have dennison and turner
so we havent completely dismantled the offense. i thought those two were more important to keep than bates
Agree
keeping Turner & Dennison were far more important than keeping Bates.
Bates had 1 year under his belt. If he was such a rising star, he would have been hired as an OC somewhere.
I’m gonna vent for a minute, and this is just my opinion but….
…the statement of the organization being a disater is not an overstatment in my opinion. The defense was gawd awful, the special teams was awful, and the personnel evaluation organization was a wreck, sans the 2006 draft (lets wait another year on the 2008 draft, but it looks promising).
How many times was Shanny going to let the fans know that we’re just a guy here and a tweak there from being a championship contender?
Denver needs to rebuild the defense and must add depth enough so the special teams aren’t embarassing. Even Scott O’Brien, a renowned special teams coach, couldn’t improve the special teams in Denver. Remember that Shanny was responsible for the defense too. People around Denver would like you to think that Shanny was the offensive boss, but he was the HEAD COACH and THE GM. He’s responisble for O, D, and ST, not to mention the talent they bring in. I would say he earns a passing grade for his work with the offense, failing grades for D and ST and an incomplete on talent.
So, he had a good offense with good young talent. That’s it. That’s all he left us with. We might as well be the New Orleans Saints. We were closer to 5-11 than we were to 11-5 in 2008, thank you to Ed Hochuli and the ref crew from the Saints game, oh and I can’t forget to mention Romeo Crennel’s awful coaching display on Thursday night football.
Denver’s offense is so talented, Annabelle Bowlen could have coordintaed it at a top 10 level last year, but they still can’t run and can’t finish their drives either. Their yards/points ratio is 5th WORST in the NFL in 2008 and although that’s not an end-all-be-all stat, it’s important. The 2nd best yardage in the NFL doesn’t mean 2nd best offense.
Denver’s defense was 2nd WORST in the NFL. Why only second worst? Because the worst team EVER, the Lions were worse and they didn’t win a single game!
I defended Shanny to the bitter end, but now that it’s over, I realize that he didn’t have the ability to get this team to the next level. Bates is not some wunderkind and Denver certainly shouldn’t be worried about upsetting their star-in-the-making QB, because at some point, he has to be accountable to the head coach, not just a go between son of a former defensive coordinator. Cutler acts like a petulant child when things unravel a little. That’s not impressive and I’m sure it is embarassing for his teammates at times.
I’m happy to see that Denver thre the organization against the wall and broke it all over the place. It had to happen at some point.
Okay, I feel better.

Bates the playcaller
was the one who abandoned the run when it was working against Buffalo and kept with the deep passes when it wasn’t working against the faders.
I have no problem with him not coming back.
Nice rant. And rec’d.

And now Cutler will have more communication with the HC
instead of not one at all, which is what there was with Shanahan……..from what I hear.

But he can only have so much communication ...
… because McDaniels has to be the head coach to the whole team, and not just Cutler. For every QB guru who successfully guides the entire team, there’s one who can’t. Take 10 years ago, when the Eagles plucked Andy Reid, while the Browns got Chris Palmer.

I know that
yet I was surprised when I heard Shanny didn’t have much communication with Culter.

That's a good point Holden...
But I praise Bowlen for being willing to part with past successes and take a gamble on future success on someone that he believes will be successful. I huess that’s his right as owner.
Nobody knows how McD will do as a head coach (although Bowlen thinks he’ll succeed), but nobody knows if Shanny would have ridden the Broncos to another title in 2 years or if he’d have resigned 3 games into the 2009 campaign.
Atleast he did not go to the Faiders, and
become next Mike Shanahan that would beat us for the next century… :)
I wish him goodluck… Go Broncos!!!
Haha
I actually like this, he probably didnt do this for this reason, as a shot at Al.

I am happy...
I liked Bates, although he was over rated, and USC is my collge team.
Lets see what he can do there!
Those that cant coach, compete!
Failing to plan is planning to fail.
Smart move
Obviously a great program, will be interesting on how he transitions to recruiting, but I got to believe the pay will be the same or better.

I think I would've looked harder at Detroit.
Going to the college ranks, even a program like USC, doesn’t always help if you’re wanting a Pro job.
Good luck, Jeremy.

But being an assistant coach recently
at USC has helped a few land bigger jobs, even if it is a small sample size.

Going to SC ...
… is practically equivalent to a professional job now, anyhow. Certainly one could argue that they have more talented young players than some of the more abject professional outfits such as the Lions. Would not surprise me if Bates remains at SC for as long as Shanahan stays off an NFL sideline, then returns when Shanahan does. Given where the co-offensive coordinators for SC in 2006 are now (Kiffin at Tennessee, Sarkisian at Washington), going to the Trojans could give Bates the option of getting a BCS-level coaching job, maybe at a place like Virginia, Miami, Louisville or Wisconsin. Some or all of those could be in play next year, since the pressure appears to be high on each of those programs’ coaches.
So congratulations to Bates. I think we’ll hear much from him in coming years.

One that may be in play is CU next year
I agree it’s the smartest move for him, he would have been working with garbage in Detriot and Oakland would of been a waste. The big thing will be how well can he recruit since I don’t think he has ever had to do that.

they extended hawkins last year.
i highly doubt they’ll can him even if its another 5 win season.
This is probably best for all...
I don’t think Bates would ever be satisfied working for McDaniels and any pro team would invite too many unfair comparisons. Good luck Mr. Bates; I hope USC works for you!
Exactly
This is great for Bates’ career. If he can develop a great rapport with the new SC QB’s, he’ll be a hot OC candidate in a few years.
Great move for Denver too. I like that Denver has a lot of young coaches and McCoy always found a way to get Steve Smith the ball even when he was double covered or worse.
well that sucks...
best of luck to him though, maybe we will see him again in denver some day.

Well with Pete Carrol there, I wish him all the best.
He is going to a very good NCAA football program.

Good Luck to JB
I hope he does well, and I echo the feelings of those who are glad he won’t be in the NFL next year.
Was the playcalling all him this year? I know we lacked a running game, but we had people who could run in every game, even if they were different people. They may have been 8th string (effectively) but we still had running backs. Did Bates call all those deep vertical plays repeatedly in the Oakland game? Did he call all the pass-happy red-zone plays that ended up as interceptions? I know, I wouldn’t be questioning these things if they had worked. But if it was Bates making those calls, why are we upset about losing him? In those games we lost, there was usually not even an ATTEMPT at making the opponent think we would run. I think Shanahan even announced a couple of times that we would put the ball in the air a lot.
The bottom line is that it is difficult for me to understand who deserves the credit for the great offense and who deserves the blame for the lousy calling at times. Or was it even lousy calling? It may have been our only choice because of the RB situation.
Most of you know more than me. Please, ENLIGHTEN!
Or don’t… it’s really a moot point now. Go get those Bruins, Jeremy!

I'm not sure where this fits re: Bates
But one reason that I feel comfortable with the McD hiring is that he immediately brought in a very good D coordinator in Nolan and a man with excellent skills in Mike McCoy. The work he did with Delhomme, last game not withstanding, has been great. I’m sure that he will enjoy having the talent of Cutler to work with, and McD did a wonderful job on the QB and the offense in NE. McD also had the sense to maintain continuity with perhaps the two most talented (and experienced) coaches the Broncos had in Dennison and Turner.
A man comfortable with himself professionally will place the best people he can around him and give them the tools and the personnel to win. Shanahan did well on offense and poorly on the rest of the team. As an OC he was one of the best, but since his job was GM/HC/HMWIC, he bears responsibility for what super7 so eloquently described today – a lot of problems with a single, shining bright spot – our O line and passing game, including a couple of very good TEs. He suffered from one of the classic management mistakes in not letting better people make better decisions = although the raising of the Goodmans/Xanders team indicates that Pat or Mike understood that there were problems and were trying to solve them.
McD has made a good start with his coaches. I hope that this trend continues into the draft, OTAs and training camp as we prepare for what could be a very tough year.
