VOTE '09: Who do you want to be the next head coach?
I'll keep this short and sweet. Out of all the candidates presented so far, who would you hire to be the next head coach if you were Pat Bowlen? Hopefully all of us already know a little about all the candidates, and fanposts like Boydy's and Guru's are good resources for a little research. I'm just going to put up the poll.
Before you vote, though, keep a few things in mind.
- Money. We already owe Shanny $20 million over the next three years, and a big name head coach (cough Bill Cowher cough) would set us back quite significantly, possibly forcing Pat Bowlen to skimp on other things.
- Age. Raheem Morris is a talented up-and-comer, but then again he's younger than half the players. In the same light, guys like Cowher or Spagnuolo aren't going to stick around forever.
- Past experience. This one is obvious. Look at what the guy did in his last job with the players he had there. Did he sign those players or did he make the best of someone else's crop? Also, did he implement his scheme or did he take over someone else's?
Now get out there and VOTE!! It's the patriotic thing to do, after all.

Also, if someone wants to bring up a candidate I neglected to mention, feel free to do so. I’ll put him in the poll.

Where's My Urban Meyer Option?!
Seriously though, I think Bowlen should learn from his experience with Shanny and realize that coaches have a limited self-life to begin with. In other words, don’t worry about a coach’s age and him not hanging around forever because, when it comes down to it, you won’t want him to. If he can put in 10 years, he’d have done more than enough. Give me Spags.

I donr want
The Chin, and Carroll wont leave his pro team in LA. Plus I honestly think are only 3 viable guys: Morris, Spags, and Schwartz. I am intrigued by Morris he is young and bright. I feel he is the same vein as Tomlin. I would not be opposed to Denver hiring him. He would help revamp the defense and the Broncos will keep their offensive staff. For anyone who is against him based on Bucs last 4 games is off base. Sure Tampa chcoked down the stretch. But do you base him off Kiffen running the defense? But whomever Denver hires will be good for the Broncos.
Also No to any college coaches

Agreed
And he has experience working with Bates. Bright young cpoaches for an explosive young team. I voted Raheem Morris, even after originally thinking Cowheer would be great…I just like the way this team is young and i feel some fiery young coaches could bring out the best in them!
Those that cant coach, compete!
Failing to plan is planning to fail.
Spagnuolo
He spent years with the Eagles D (pretty good) and the last two as the Giants DC. Pretty good. I really like his demeanor on the sideline. He may not want to relocate way out west though – he’s a Massachussett’s/east coast person. There may not be enough money to get him here – he already makes 2 million a year as the Giants DC, and I read that he and his wife are far from being materialistic.
To bear up under loss, to fight the bitterness of defeat and the weakness of grief, to be victor over anger, to smile when tears are close, to resist evil men and base instincts, to hate evil and to love love, to go on when it would seem good to die, to seek after the glory and the dream, to look up with unquenchable faith in something evermore about to be, that is what any man can do, and so be great.

In Bowlen we trust. Find someone special.
Rick Dennison
He would keep the offense and knows a little about defense.
Second choice
I hated Dennison as the ST’s coach but give hm a great deal of credit for getting that OL where it is today. Their the best pass-blockers we’ve had since the SB years, easily.
He has a lot in the plus column (his offensive experience, smarts, teaching ability, Bronco alum) and really only his ST’s days in the minus. How much of a motivator is he?
Or so I'm told.
Good poll...
it deserves its place on the front page

Can we take the field?
Perhaps none of these candidates makes the cut.
I wish Woody Paige was our coach!
Two dark horses, provided it doesn't go to my man the chin
Jim Harbaugh HC of Standford
Brian Kelly HC of the University of Cinncinatti
What I like about both of these guys are they have turned around very bad programs.
Harbaugh dad is a coach and his brother is the coach of the Ravens, he has it in his blood. Plus being an ex-NFL QB, I am sure he will have Cutler’s ear.
Brian Kelly has done an amzaing job wherever he has been at, making a fotball team in Cinncinatti is high praise indeed.
Granted I am not a big fan of the college coach to the NFL approach, seems to be limited success, but I think these two may be guys who could make that transition. It would be a ballsy move by Pat, but something to keep an eye on if the usual suspects don’t pan out.

Harbaugh maybe
but no thanks on Brian Kelly. He’s a very good college coach who is turning a basketball school into a football one. His offense is imaginative and very fun to watch (except the Orange Bowl last night because his QB couldn’t stop himself from making bad play after bad play), but giving him a very good pro job in manning the Denver Broncos is too much of a jump.
They call me Bubblegum.
I would tend to agree
Just mentioning Kelly cause he seems like a guy who could make the jump, but it would be a big jump and I would think he may fail more than he would suceed.

I either want
Spags or Morris. I know Spags has a lot more experience coaching since he is older by around 10 year. Plus he has DC experience for 2 year. I like Spags because of his scheme that he learned from coaching behind Jim Johnson. The Blitz happy, Blitz all the time is great and always gets pressure on the QB which leads to Sacks or INT. Now I really like Morris and I think he has a good shot because Bowlen likes young coaches. Everything I have heard and read about this guy impresses me. He has a big presence in his locker room with all the players just not the DB he coaches. He is a young, smart football mind and has been on peoples radar for a couple of years. He is a lot like Mike Tomlin because Tomlin came out of now where and most fans had no idea who he was. Also Morris will bring the Tampa 2 D that works well with great offense, example is Indy. I think the personnel we have know fit the tampa 2 better. Woodyard, DJ and Elvis are great for this theme. I also think Bailey and Bly are great for this theme. It allows them to read the QB and jump routes more easily. Either way I would be happy but for some reason I really like Morris

and morris is only like 32
which is an advantage and a disadvantage. A lot of people will say he is too young and does not have enough experience. My opinion is if you know football then you know football and if you are a great leader it does not matter if you are 32 or 42. Also young coaches have been showing up in the NFL everywhere lately

I like Morris
He’s almost like the rookie with unknown upside. I’d rather them take the chance on a Tomlin clone than any of these other guys. I like Spags except that he’s almost 50. I’d rather we go with someone younger.
Of all the names mentioned
Morris and Rex Ryan are my favorite candidates. Spagnuolo doesn’t really do it for, though the work he has done with the Giants has been impressive. I do like how all the talk of Bill Cowher everywhere else is not as prevalent here. I don’t think he’d be the right guy for the job, but I think Morris might be.
They call me Bubblegum.
I think spags is 42
The thing about Spags is he has a lot more experience. Also since he is being interviewed first and the broncos and him moved around their schedule to get the interview done. Also the thing about Spags I like is the learned under Jim Johnson. He was with the Eagles 1999-2006. While there he was a Defensive Assistant 1999-00, Defensive backs coach 2001-2003 and linebackers coach from 2004-2006. I like this because he coached so many different aspects on the Defensive side. Also watch what he does with the Dline in NY. He creates great mismatches. Now his scheme requires press coverage by the CB, which means CB’s that are strong and and push the WR around. I think our CB and other defensive players would be better in a tampa 2. If Spags comes he will completely work over the defensive side of the ball, which really is not a bad thing. I just think we have some great players like woodyard, DJ and elvis that would be great in a tampa 2.

Note on Spags
I’m happy with Morris or Spags and open to other options. Disclaimer finished.
I understand the history of older coaches having trouble with the jump to HC but in this case it doesn’t worry me. The original study, as I understand it, was for those 55 or over and Steve Spags is 49 according to Wiki. Second, and far more important, the offense is a recovering Hillis away from being world class. You’re hiring a HC to support the O and create the D. Looking at the soft, lousy D that was the Giants lo those 3 years ago, that’s the selling point for this man.
The fact that I love J. Johnson’s blitz-happy style is a personal preference that plays heavily. However, since HT says that the Tampa-2 approach would help us and I am proud to learn from that man, Morris intrigues me. He’s also a fast rising star, the players love him and Kiffen has nothing but praise for him. He seems to know his D inside and out – I question whether he can bring the kinds of connections and assistants that Steve Spags can, given his greater experience.
For the record, I’m utterly opposed to any college coach. The historical #s on that are too great. HT has noted the differences betwixt HS, college and the pros. We need a solid pro who can turn around an ugly program fast enough to take advantage of a great offensive window.
Jim Goodman for Broncos MVP!
Also a note on Spags
Is NYG D was horrible before he got there and in his first year he turned the D into a SB winning D that shut down the best O we have seen in a long time. Also in his second year with the injuries and retirements he has still produced an awesome D

would be happy with cowher, but i don’t think he is going to coach this season. slowick for db coach, or elsewhere. keep everybody on o, if possible. st’s, i don’t care either way. with a hc, gm, dc!, and possibly oc coming in, this is quite a shakeup. in short, how many mortals is it going to take to do everything shanny used to do, and as well. couldn’t we have just fired slowick, and convince the mastermind to get some help in other areas, namely on defense and fa? what i don’t understand is, does shanny just think he is going to control all football operations somewhere else? he may, but i doubt it. after revealing he hasn’t called most of the plays in years, he will be the head coach/oc for his next team first, you would think, where he is at his best. and he’ll probably do very well. can we hire him for that, and get like, a real dc, maybe a gm? come on guys, you love each other, work it out!

Spagnuolo is 49! I want the team of Heckert/Spags! This is a dream team! Def free agents would kill to come play here.
I do like Schwartz and Rex Ryan. Why? Because they’ve proven they have the ability to build a vaunted Defense and draft/acquire quality players to make their schemes effective. Hmmm…sound like anything we need? If our defense could just move into the top 12, we’d be unbeatable. Look at what the Eagles did to Dallas last week. Look at what Giants did to New England in last year’s Super Bowl. Well, that is all a function of Heckert and Spagnuolo. There you go….the rest is up to Pat!

what does this mean...
for the 15 scripted plays(3 td’s the last 3 weeks), the zone-blocking scheme, and the fate of all the assistants, who are packing their bags as we speak? this could be a bigger change than we thought. bates and greek are expected to stay on, but what about the rest? i’m not sure i like a new direction on offense, right now. any thoughts?
hear me, perpetrators of bread crime, your punishment is at hand.

As far as the zone blocking goes...
I don’t know how to quite put it into words, but there seems to be a change coming over the running game in Denver. Of course it may have been all the injuries this year, or it simply may be the fact that Jay Cutler has taken over, but whatever it is (could also have been the beastly Broncos line of old that has been retiring over the years and may finally leave with Nalen on his way out) I don’t get the same feelings that any back can be “plugged and chugged” into the system (of course maybe the line just needs to mature – Clady did extremely well in one year, so here’s to looking up). I guess I don’t really know. I just want that dominant run game that teams have feared in the past from the Broncos. It’s not that I don’t trust or like Cutler airing it out, I just want some consistency for him to rely on that would make our offense that much more potent.
Does a new coach come in and have a complete and total say in the football philosophy? Does Denver want, need or decide to draft a stud type running back again? There are surely a lot of questions right now for this team, even on the offensive side of the ball. I’ll certainly be interested to see how the Broncos respond to all of them after they bring in a new HC.
AGREED Philosophy has changed
There has been a change in the Offensive philosophy and I really dont like it. No ballance. No strategy other than spread and go. No control. It look’s spectacular and is verry exciting but does’nt set anything up for the next series. Tactics without strategy! That’s exactly why the scripted plays’ worked better than any of the rest of most games. The scripted plays had strategy and set up the next series then the O Coaches (Bates) would take over with the sread O. I don’t like it at all.
Wat I’m saying is it’s allready changed.
Tactics without Strategy is the noise you hear before Defeat!
You are confusing zone blocking with the spread offense.
You can, and Denver did, run a spread offense using a zone blocking scheme. You can even have a run first spread offense. OU has two 1000-yd rushers. Denver still has the same ZB scheme. The difference is the play selection, especially after the first quarter. If you look at many of our games, too many, we had a fairly run heavy play selection during the first 15 plays and were usually fairly successful at running. Then we would abandon the run. Against Buffalo, playing with a lead, we ran 3 times in the entire 3rd quarter. That’s my knock against Bates. He may be a decent QB coach but I don’t think he’s worht a damn at play selection.
+1 on Bates...
Except the beginning of the year. Early on (Raiders game) I thought the play calling was exceptional, then later on became very predictable.
So it was more of a play-calling "foul-up" than a zone blocking breakdown then?
Thanks for the correction. Didn’t get to see too many Denver games this season myself. While I realize you can sill utilize zone blocking in a spread scheme, I wasn’t sure if the new personnel had made much of a difference. Clearly the team’s not running the ball like it’s used to and I just wanted to know why. It’s sure nice to have that strong run tradition.
Plus, there's tons of 'run first' spread style offenses in the college game...
so I’ve seen those before. Just wanted to make the point that Cutler at the helm has completely averted the style of play from the yard eating running game.
AGREED
I totally agree it seemed that Bates would just panic if the running game did’nt gain 4+. The Broncos also did’nt start a FB in the last 4 games. which meant when a RB got hurt he would empty the backfield and pass pass pass.
Tactics without Strategy is the noise you hear before Defeat!
I just want to say
WOW! this poll is at nearly 600 votes. And that I am still not over Shanny being gone, but I am having fun with coach watch 2009. It is like having an extra draft prior to the player draft. I hope it takes awhile to give me something to still care about football-wise.
this is the biggest move of the offseason
