Brian Urlacher - Denver Bronco?
Seems crazy, however reports are that Chicago is looking to deal their star MLB due to percieved limited upside and injury potential, and cut some salary. What are the thoughts of Denver pursuing Urlacher, provided the contract can be reworked to be somewhat like Dewayne Robertson's where we won't be on the hook if he gets injured.
Speaking as a guy who watched Urlacher throughout college at the University of New Mexico, I was severly dissapointed Denver did not trade up to get him that year. I would love to see him roaming the middle of the field in a Denver uniform. He simply is the biggest playmaker at LB in the NFL when healthy. Think of a corps with Williams on the strong side, Urlacher in the middle, and Woodyard on the weak side, draft a young MLB for insurnace and to groom, and I think you have solved much of the LB problems for a great while.
Anyways, thought and comments are always welcome.

URLACHER = WANT.
Whoever the new HC is, I hope he looks into this. Urlacher wouldn’t be worth a first-day draft pick IMO, but if we could package something up, I would love to see #54 in orange and blue.

I just had a thought. I liked it.
What if we sign Urlacher, and put him in a 3-4 with Woodyard at WLB, DJ at WMLB, Urlacher at SMLB, and an unnamed draft pick (named Cushing) at SLB? And then signed Haynesworth to be the NT? I would like that.

I don't know about Haynesworth as a true NT
I think he is much better collapsing the pocket and having him just control the line might be a waste of his talents, I also heard the Titans are close to signing him to a long term deal, so it may be a mote point in a couple of weeks. I think if we went to a 3-4, then we would just draft a kid like Cody that would be there to eat lineman and free LB, I still like having as many good LB on the field though since we lack very many good lineman.

We could definitely pull off Cushing in the first round and Raji in the second.
Cody will most likely go in the first.

I'm not sure, papi
It’s early, but I think that after watching Boston College this week, Raji might be going in the 1st round, maybe as high as 20.

True..
But we might be able to trade down in the first and pick up Cushing from 20-25, then use oour new pick to get back in the first and pick up Raji. Or stay at #12 in the second and pick up Sen’Derrick Marks.

No thanks!
Urlacher would be a temporary fix at a position that we need a long term answer.
With the MLB depth in the upcoming draft I think we should look for a long term solution.

true...
But I like the idea of going extremely young on defense to match our extremely young offense. That way they can grow together and hopefully both start hitting on all cylinders around the same time. I think that’s how you end up with a team that is good year in and year out over extended periods of time. Free agency is useful to fill one position of need once everything else is solid; however, we have a whole lot more than one position of need on defense.
Plus, I just don’t think it’s worth the injury risk for the amount of $$$ that Urlacher will want.

Urlacher has always been somewhat overrated and is clearly in decline...
But neither fact means that he isn’t better than anybody the Broncos have at MLB right now. He makes too many tackles 5 yards downfield in the running game, but he covers a lot of ground.

NO to Urlacher, NO to Cushing, YES-YES to Maualuga/Clay Matthews...
We can get Rey @#12, then pick up Matthews in the 3rd. Kid was rockin last nite. Im beginning to think that Taylor Mays be a be too much hype!!!!!

closest thing to Sean Taylor I’ve seen in a while. If he’s available, I hope we draft him.

Deadly describes the hits well, bc...
it’s become popular over the last few months to bag on TMays. Some probably do it out of hate for USC, others because they don’t understand his position on the SC defense. His job on the D is to play the center field position, and take away the deep threat. Not very often this season have you seen teams try to go deep on the Trojans, and when they did, TMays usually made them pay. HUGE hitter. When he was called to blitz, he rarely missed the opportunity to disrupt the QB. Also a good character kid. His teammates have often said that Mays shys away from the Hollywood spotlight, and is very low key if he does go out. He is the anti-Leinart/Bush. I’ll agree he could use another year to develop his mental game, but the kid is a physically gifted freak. I’ve been saying all along that I would like to see the Broncos go Maualuga in the first, and S Chung in the second, but if Mays is there at #12(and most guess Rey will be gone) I wouldn’t be one bit disappointed to see the Broncos pick him up and go LB later.

He would continue the legacy of big hitters in the secondary
following after Dennis Smith and Steve Atwater. I want WR to pay a dear price for going over the middle. And until we seriously address our front 4, which may take a 2-3 seasons, then we’ll need a stud roaming the secondary.

EXACTLY!
Every time an opposing receiver’s number is called to cross the middle, I want him to put a little piss in his jock, in utter fear that he might not make it back to the huddle. A safety that can come up to the line and knock a Christian Okoye size RB on his back! here

Fear can never be underestimated
Fact is, there are more WRs with a genetic predisposition for alligator arms than not. I want some scary sons-a-bitches on our defense. Is that too much to ask?

I gonna have to pass on this...
…the only thing I’d want him for is his leadership and experience. Really though we’d have to give up a 2nd rounder, maybe even a first and with either one of the picks we could draft a productive LB who’s upside is greater than Urlacher’s current talent.
Then again I wouldn’t be disappointed at all if we got him, in fact I’d be happier but if I was in the front office, which sadly I am not, the only thing I’d trade our numerous picks for is to climb higher in the draft.
Yes, I'm a Diamondback and Suns fan. So you may be wondering, "Why does this fool like the Broncos so much?"

No.
But a good post with a reasonable idea.
I agree with several posters that he’s past his prime, and a potential injury problem. I also agree that he’s an injury risk. He would be an immediate fix, but if Denver is going to reach the promised land, we need to sacrifice immediate fixes for long term solutions. Just my opinion.

Vilma is a free agent.
I would like to see him get a look before Urlacher. Cheaper price for sure. He played with D.J. in college. Did well for the Saints this past season.

I would certainly want Vilma over Urlacher.
Vilma is still young enough, and fast. I’d be surprised to see him not get re-signed.

All I gotta say though is...
if the Broncos draft someone, he better darn well be able to get right in there and do some damage. I’m tired of analysts talking about the lack of drafted Broncos in a starting role for this team. The whole “building your team through free agency doesn’t work” thing is starting to kill me.

Vilma Did Look Good This Year
Good call on Vilma, as the Urlacher thing seems a little far fetched. However, Woodyard is a stud in the making, and he needs to be on the field. I think our answer could be moving him to MLB full time.
by ERoyalRules on Jan 3, 2009 1:27 PM MST reply actions 0 recs
i think DJ would be a better fit in the middle
woodyard is FAST! i think the broncos will get the most out of him and his speed on the weak side. keep in mind WW is only 225 lbs or something like that. DJ played well in the middle last year, imo.

Here's a wacky idea
Draft Mayes, sign Urlacher, and run what he used to at New Mexico, basically a 4-2-5 defense, have Urlacher lose about 15 pounds, and put him as a rover, have Barrett and Mayes as the other two safeties, Williams and Woodyard as the backers, and see if we could get Peppers and Haynesworth. Now you would have three safeties that are all 220 lbs plus, can run and hit, and can blitz, me starting to like that idea alot, creates all sorts of nasty mismatches for us to use, plus nobody will want to ctach a pass between the hash marks.
