Gauging Interest in Julius Peppers
Hello Bronco fans,
By now everyone knows that Julius Peppers clearly wants to find another team for next season. Those of us at Cat Scratch Reader would like to get a feel for what other teams fans would trade for Peppers, if at all. He says he is interested in a 3-4 defense but many of us believe that is mostly a smoke screen and he just wants to find another place to play. But I don't really want to get into why he wants to leave. So, answer me this question, provided we franchise him, what would you be willing to trade for Peppers?
(I'd prefer you select something besides "other", but if you feel so inclined please leave a comment as to what you would give.)
Thanks.

I just think we need too much help on defense to trade draft picks for him. I wouldn’t mind trading a player or two for him but I haven’t given much thought to exactly which ones. Sorry I’m not much help here guys. We just need too much help on D to give up any draft picks, especially the higher ones which is what it would take to get Peppers, I’d rather you not franchise him and we can sign him as a free agent. Either that or a player for player or two trade would be more acceptable to me personally.
The player who thinks he can and the player who knows he can are two different players, which one are you???

Player trade only, the defense has too many needs to give up a high draft pick
and I don’t see a player trade happening

Trading for Peppers would be sort of like when the Mets traded for Johan Santana
Just the contract you have to pay the guy almost makes it cost-prohibitive to trade anything of great value for him. it becomes a case of spending too much of your assets for him, when you consider both cap space and draft picks. The Mets traded 4 OK prospects for Santana, then had to pay him 160 million dollars. Of those prospects, only Carlos Gomez did anything in the majors in year 1, and all that amounted to was good defense and baserunning.
I would probably trade a 2nd round pick for the exclusive right to overpay Peppers, but nothing more than that. He is not going anywhere, and this stuff about wanting to leave is a negotiating ploy. Read Andrew Brandt’s piece here about it.

Nothing higher than a 4th or a 5th
round pick. He is not worth a 3, 2 or a 1.

I wait for him to talk his way out of Carolina
and then i sign him to a nice little FA contract (read little as Huge :) )

If we had a ltter round 1st draft pick then I would trade a 1st for him (25-32)
But value at 12 is probably too high, though I think the draft is overvalued as a whole.

Sorry, some of these responses aren't very serious
My concern is Peppers’ age. I wonder how many years he has left in him. If I thought he had at least four or five he’d be worth and first and third to me.

no problem
It’s all hypothetical anyway.
Peppers just turned 29 and he should have another 4 years or so. He’s been pretty health while here. He did have a down year in 2007. We all figured he something was wrong physically, which he denied. But now knowing he wants out and probably did last year, he just didn’t play. Now it’s a contract year and he’s auditioning for other teams, he steps it up.

Why trade for him
He is going to either be a UFA or be tagged. I would not waste any picks on him.

Exactly...
I don’t really understand how any of this stuff works; however, my understanding was that his contract was up and he didn’t want to renew it with the Panthers. Therefore, why would we, or anyone else, have to trade anything for him? Wouldn’t he presumably go to the highest bidder and/or the place he wanted to be?

Carolina can franchise him
Meaning force him to a 1 year contract then they can trade him
by purplesocks on Jan 21, 2009 4:30 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
He could become a UFA
and with some of the other contracts and players that want to stay with the team it may walk. But we will most likely apply the franchise tag to him which either 1) forces us to pay him $17 mill for one year and he plays, 2) he sits out a year in protest with no pay I believe, or 3) he works out a trade with another team, which at that point he would workout a new contract with new team.

why
i said if he is a UFA why trade 4 him? i wouldnt give up a high #1 for him. He will sign the tender for a tagged guy. I am tired of these stupid what ifs.

Sure if he becomes a UFA
you don’t give anything for him. But the point of my question is that if we franchise him then another team could offer a trade. I realize the Broncos may have no need for him, I’m just trying to gather fan feeling on if the team did want him, what would you give in a trade for him.

no team
will give up two picks for him, especially when he has said he wants out

Julius Peppers is a rare talent, no doubt, but I can't see trading for him, not the Broncos anyway
Every team has a different story but ours is one of overhaul. We need more help than one man can bring and while adding a young, 28, talent to our team would be a great start, I wouldn’t see a scenerio where he would be worth losing out on other players.
Free Agency or bust for us.

Will he be more than a pass rush force?
If Peppers can apply the pressure and provide really good role model / leadership for the young guys so they play more to their potential then it might be worth a high draft pick. If he is able to supply that then I would be for the Broncos giving up a 2nd.

He is a complete end...he can do it all, even drop back in coverage...hence the long INT he had against us!

Yes he can do it all
but from a leadership standpoint we have our doubts in Carolina. He’s a very quite/reserved person.

He'll fit right in with DJ and Champ

Nothing, period.
He is an extremely talented player whom I would love to have on my team. That being said I would never be happy with a team trading a draft pick for a player 30 or older. Anyway, our defense needs far more than one player to become decent. If we were one player away from dominance I would be all for it, but we’re not. If he somehow hits the free agent market then we should go after him, if they tag him, we should forget about him.

Well he just turned 29 on the 18th of Jan...so he is still in his prime.

Simeon Rice #2
That’s all I have to say.
by GJcontingent-rAd on Jan 21, 2009 7:57 PM MST reply actions 0 recs
Well Simeon had three great years when he was 29,30,31,
2005 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 15 15 40 33 7 14.0 — 3 1 6 6.0 6 0 - -
2004 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 16 16 40 34 6 12.0 — 5 - - 0.0 - - - -
2003 Tampa Bay Buccaneers 16 16 50 45 5 15.0
41 sacks isn’t too shabby!

Yeah, and how did Simeon Rice produce for us?
Oh yeah, he didn’t. Same wih Sam Adams and half of the other FA’s we’ve brought in.
My point is that we need to maintain the draft as our central method of buidling / replenishing this team. We need to not get sucked into relying too heavily on free agency. We need to use Free Agents to supplement the draft, not use the draft to suppelement Free Agency.

He was 34 not 29...their is a big difference...if we got Simeon at 29 we would have had 41 sacks

I can see
a mid-round draft pick and player combo- his cost is too prohibitive to give-up any 1st or 2nd round picks. I’m sure we have a few 4-3 players we could easily give up that they might be interested in.
Frack, frackin' fracker!

Our biggest need
would probably be a DT and if peppers leaves you can throw a new DE in the need pile as well.
