Mike Shanahan to Kansas City?
Per a rumor posted over at Arrowhead Pride:
If true, wow. That's like Tony Dungy coaching New England. The news relates to us colts fans because even though Indy just hired Larry Coyer as Dc, they may still make a play for Herm Edwards as an Assistant HC and DB coach. Not sure just yet.Jack Harry just reported tonight that his sources at Arrowhead have said that the Chiefs are 24 to 48 hours away from announcing Mike Shanahan as the new head coach.

I just wouldn't understand that move
Too many personalities for that to sound like a match to me. The Chiefs just signed Pioli and now have a proven GM, enter Mike Shanahan? I don’t see how this would work.
If he is willing to just be a coach and not a personnel man or the VP of Football Operations why not stay in Denver where he at least help build the foundation?

Good for the Broncos
At least in the sense that any money KC pays him is money Bowlen doesn’t have to pay him… And his $7 million salary has to be limiting our options free agent wise…
Only if the 7 million is effecting Bowlen...coaches salaries are not applied towards the cap.

True, but it is 7 million dollars Bowlen won't have to spend.
If this is true, then the AFC West has just gotten that much more interesting. I hear what you said above on just being a HC. If this story is solid, then I would be intrigued to see if Shanny sticks to X’s and O’s.

Personally, I don’t see Shanahan going to a AFC West team. Despite being fired, I think he still has a ton of respect for Bowlen and the Broncos (unlike Al Davis and the Raiders). I don’t think the possibility of two revenge wins over Denver every year will be a big motivating factor for him.
But then again, I’ve been wrong before :)
I think you might be underestimating
the fire that burns in the belly of that man. I know this ended differently than the raiders situation but – after coming to know more and more about this guy – I think he will continue coming at the Raiders and now will come after us in a more fraternal – ha ha see I told you so way.

Not to say I told you so . . . but . . .
I told you so. This will be interesting, let’s see if Shanny goes all Al Davis on Pat and spends all of his time exacting his revenge on our heads.
On the bright side, we could take the money and go spend it on free agents. On the darker side, we will have to contend with a competent franchise w/ Pioli and Shanahan. Man, this is going to be wild if it happens.

Mixed Feelings
I am not happy about this at all. Slash, I barely believe this.
Shanahan was/is a great frontrunner. He struggles when his teams are behind. Maybe I’m just bitter. So if he goes to KC, I’m not exactly scared.

Shanny was a great coach and a bad GM,
now that he has Scott Pioli running the show, he can focus on running the team. I hope we kill the chiefs every time we play them. I hope we drive shanny and the squaws into the ground at every turn, but never underestimate the drive and motivation of Mike Shanahan. To do so would be a mistake.

Mike Shanahan Could be Next Chiefs Head Coach

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – NBC Action Sports has learned that the Chiefs are getting very close to naming their new head coach.
While we can’t confirm it, we’re hearing that it sounds like Mike Shanahan could be the replacement for Herm Edwards. We should find out by Friday.
Shanahan spent 14 years in Denver but was fired after this past season. That’s when the Broncos failed to make the playoffs after blowing a three game lead with three games to play.
The 56-year-old Shanahan was known as a “mastermind” after leading Denver to back-to-back Super Bowl victories in 1998 and 1999. But it’s been a different story since John Elway retired. He only has one playoff victory since that happened.
His teams went 24-24 the last three seasons. Shanahan had total control in Denver. If he comes to Kansas City, that won’t be the case since Scott Pioli is in charge of football operations.
Sorry sounds like wishful thinking
“we can’t confirm it, we’re hearing that it sounds like Mike Shanahan” – sounds like some janitor told them he thinks that the Chiefs will hire Shanahan, that is nothing more than rumor and speculation. I rumored and speculated Bill Cowher was coming here, didn’t make it happen.

"Duffman is thrusting in the direction of the problem" - Duffman
Nice Fit.
I think that’s a good place for Shanny to go and I’ll wish him all the best for a max of 14 weeks every year he’s on the Chiefs sideline. For a team rebuilding, you can’t do much better than Pioli/Shanny at the top…
From a Chiefs perspective...
I would LOVE this move. The biggest knock on Shanahan was wearing 2 hats which he wouldn’t be doing in KC.
By the way, this same sportscaster said (in an unconfirmed fashion like this rumor) about a week and a half ago that Shanahan “reached out” to the Chiefs. So, this rumor isn’t totally out of the blue.

I know that KC fans would be lucky and thrilled to get shanny. This will make for some interesting battles between McHoodie and Mastermind – like two AFC West superheros.

If he wants to stay in the AFC West
I’d rather have him in KC than SD.
It makes sense. This way he still gets to beat up on old Al twice a season (it doesn’t dissipate), AND have a healthy rivalry with Pat, his most recent former boss. This actually seems like exactly the kind of set-up Shanny would love. And he wouldn’t have to sit out a year waiting for Jerry Jones to call -he doesn’t seem the type to just take a year off.
Welcome Aboard, Josh McDaniels!

Remember when shanny was fired
and all the initial speculation that Shanny took a stand on Slowik so to get fired so to go to SD. Could Shanny be the best actor ever? Could it be staged? hmmmmm?

Poor Herm
They’re really letting him twist in the wind while other HC positions fill up.
Shanny to KC would make for some great rivalries, and I know Bowlen would be fired up for it, but I sure hate the thought of being beat by our old playbook! Losing to Kubes was bad enough! LOL

And let's not forget
which HC consistently beat the Patriots’ scheme over the past few years. (With the obvious and odious exception of 2008.)
I believe I just shuddered. O.o

Schefter says "no way" Shanahan to KC
Lombardi says KC front office now in total lockdown mode and there will be no leaks, due to Pioli.
"Be not like dumb-driven cattle...."
I tend to believe Schefter a lot more, he does his homework and has ties to Shanahan
KC media are a bunch of hacks

Not unlike the Denver MSM lol
And yes, Schefter would absolutely be the first to know anything of this magnitude.

The thing about Shefter's report is that it was from 4 days ago -
a lot may have changed since then.

Yeah
Joe Posnanski is pretty bad (Columnist of the year in 2003 and 2005). Jason Whitlock (however you may view him) is an interesting read. He does a lot of national stuff too.

Maybe they’re hiring Kyle Shanahan. ^^

I have a buddy who works for a sports/news company in KC...
this is him email from when I asked him this morning
Jack Harry is notorious for jumping the gun on a lot stuff…1. Priest Holmes retiring a 2 years before he did. 2. Larry Johnson being traded 3. Tony Gonzalez being traded. 4. Marty Schottenhiemer was coming back to take over for Dick Vermeil. Jack likes to splash the sports news and then act like nothing happened when it does not come true. Couple hot rumors: Shananhan would be the coach next year and bring in Romeo Crennel as d-coordinator. Another was Pioli’s father-in-law is Bill Parcells and he would get out of Miami and coach in KC. And the last one was the Whitlock/Cris Collinsworth rumor of the Cardinals offensive coordinator Todd Haley to become the Chiefs next head coach. So to answer your question = I have no idea.

he’s still waiting for his touches. From what I read, he’s a great guy in and out of the locker room. I hope the line lets him run more routes this year.
I thought Tim Brewster developed Gates

Never going to Happen
Shanahan will never got to KC because he wants complete control of everything and he will not have that in KC. They are just getting this from all the Rumors floating around. I also believe Schefter, evern if it was 4 days ago more then some nobody in KC
by gnarlybroncodude on Jan 22, 2009 12:10 PM MST reply actions
I could see him taking a job as long as he has some say in personnel decisions.
He has never said that he has to have COMPLETE control. If he believes in Pioli, he might be persuaded to do to to KC.

well
I dont believe it. Plus if Schefter is already refuting this. But then again BBS is always full of BS and this is a non story seeing that Herm is still employed and the Chefs would have to interview a minority candidate first. The Hunts are not going to take a huge fine by skirting the Rooney Rule.

Chiefs haven’t contacted Shanahan
Posted: January 22nd, 2009 | Adam Schefter | Tags: Kansas City Chiefs, Mike Shanahan
(Jack Dempsey/AP)
Nearly a month after the season, the Chiefs still haven’t made a coaching change. Mike Shanahan still doesn’t have a job.
Thus, in the past 24 hours, like a virus that has spread, some have concluded that Kansas City is pursuing Shanahan and he could be the Chiefs’ next head coach.
Time to squash that rumor. As of mid-day Thursday, the Chiefs and Shanahan haven’t had any contact. None. Zero. Zip. Nada.
Yet, within the past hour, I’ve received a half-dozen calls and e-mails from various Kansas City and Denver media outlets, asking if there’s any truth to the rumor that the Chiefs and Shanahan are talking.
No, there is not. There is no truth to the rumor. Chiefs officials are at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., and Shanahan just finished a morning run on the treadmill.
The Chiefs’ coaching mystery continues — minus Shanahan.
