Louis Delmas
5'11" 196 lbs.
Western Michigan FS
While I consider myself to watch as much college football as most fans, I must admit I didn't catch any Western Michigan games this year. Typically this fact wouldn't bother me much, but after learning about Louis Delmas, I wish I had paid more attention to the team. He's been drawing a lot of attention to himself at the Senior Bowl practices, and most scouts are naming him and Chung the best safeties on the field. SI had this so say about Delmas:
Louis Delmas/S/Western Michigan: Delmas has been the best safety on the field and the feisty defender consistently put himself in a position to make plays on the ball all day. He throws his body around the field in an effort to stop ball handlers and delivered a number of blows that made scouts take notice. Delmas was effective in run defense and against the pass.
Although a little on the light side, Delmas is said to have the frame to add 20 - 30 pounds, without sacrificing much speed. His forty time is said to be 4.5, and scouts say he plays even faster on the field. New Era Scouting calls him an outspoken leader, with rock-solid character, never tires and is relentless on plays. They go on to say that his coverage skills are that of a corner back, and call him a play maker in every sense of the word. New Era's link to him is here.

Delmas has an incredible story, and the more I learn about him, the more I like him. I think he would fit in great with the "high character" movement going on at Dove Valley. Please read the story on him in this link, it is worth your time. Here. Any more information on Mr. Delmas would be appreciated, and as always, so is your opinion.

Troy Polamalu?
His style of play sounds familiar.
From there, I'd like to say that the wheels came off, but that wouldn't feel like an accurate description. The wheels didn't just magically come off, the Raiders all got out of the car, shot the wheels off the own car, busted out the taillights, smashed the windshield and poured Splenda in the gas tank. Haven’t seen Mike Clark around here for a while. Anyone heard from him? I miss his optimism.

Mermaid is still here
Switched his name to PosterNutBag.
Zappa’s probably on vacation…he is usually only posting when he is working.
I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.
Mike's been lurking.
He’s recommended some stuff, voted in a few polls… Mike, come back!! We need your optimism!

maybe he finally ran out of optimism when Shanny got fired, and broke his keyboard in a fit of rage, now he can only vote and recommend with his mouse.?

Thanks to Mike Shanahan, a great coach who will be dearly missed. But...

Hey, I'm still here!
I was on vacation though. lol I’m working on something right now to kick off my own reloading season posts…just a lot going on in RL. My wife had foot surgery and I have been having to do everything around the house and help her with anything and everything. I also found out my dad will need bypass heart surgery in two weeks….ect ect. Plus I went out of town for about two weeks after Christmas. ;-) I am here though….just not a lot of time to contribute. lol
Besides, us optimistic guys tend to take the end of the season pretty hard……

Good cover, but too small, too weak. There are much better choices (Rashad Johnson) alabama...Nick Harris (Okla). They can be had in rounds 3-5

If you want Nic Harris
You better not want him at safety, because he’s transitioning to LB. He’s a guy I have my eye on as his cover skills should play very well as a turn and run LB in the NFL.

Honestly
His junior year was great, but he looked extremely plain his senior season. His work in the Senior Bowl has been really underwhelming, and I think he should seriously consider a transition to LB.

Was there a change in scheme...
in Mizzou’s D? Or maybe switched his duties? Hard to believe you can go (stat wise) from his junior season to his senior, without a change in his role in the D in some respect.?

Not that I know of.
He just underachieved… all year. I can’t think of one game where he made a big-time game breaking play for us. He was Mizzou’s biggest disappointment all year. Now, Brock Christopher, however, is a totally different story. That guy is MEAN.
Also, in a couple of years, expect to hear the name Adam Burton from Mizzou. Mostly because he goes to my high school and is my friend, so I’m obligated to talk about him here, but he does power clean 350, squat 650, and runs a 4.6, which must count for something. So… in four years, it’s Burton, baby!! lol.

mizzou bloggers response:
A homer perspective:
You’ve touched on/linked to something we’ve batted around all year long at Rock M Nation – the disappearance of William Moore during his senior year.
Moore was horribly, horribly mismanaged by the coaching staff during his senior season, as the defensive staff elected to move him to a hybrid linebacker/slot corner position in Missouri’s nickel-heavy system. The positioning shift allowed him to utilize the physicality you mentioned and add a mobile yet punishing body against the run game, but it took away one of his best assets: his ability to play "centerfield" and ball hawk. Combine the mismanagement with his a constant fight with injuries, and his senior season was far from what Missouri fans expected when celebrating his return this time last year.
Now, I can’t claim to be an accomplished evaluator of pro talent and I won’t guarantee anything by any stretch of the imagination. But, for the last eight weeks or so of the 2007 season, there may not have been a better safety in America than William Moore. That talent didn’t go anywhere. He could very well be a clean bill of health and a good coaching staff away from regaining that form.
This is from rptgwb . he added some other points here.

Just watched Harris interviewed on NFL network...
sounded like he’d be doing drills with both the LB’s and the DB’s at the combine. It will be interesting to see his 40 times. If he can run anything respectable like a 4.5 – 4.65, and at 6’3" and 230lbs. he becomes very interesting.

Even if he's a touch slower
I think he’s a fascinating prospect. I hated him at OU, but now that he’s coming into the NFL and I don’t have to worry about his college affiliation, he’s one of the guys I’m watching very closely. He’s said that most teams are viewing him as a safety, but the coaches at the Senior Bowl wanted to see how he could do at LB, and I think he might end up like Thomas Davis did a few years ago where he’s drafted as a S but quickly transitions into a hybrid role before shifting to LB for the majority of his snaps. A guy with that kind of versatility is invaluable though, especially on a team as decimated by injuries as ours has been in recent seasons.

We need to totally revamp our safeties - new FS and a new SS in our 3-4
At FS, I like Delmas or Chung or even Rashad Johnson in a later round. At SS, I like Kevin Ellison (USC) or Curtis Taylor (LSU) – both with good size / speed / run support and ball skills.
- Chung is bigger and is a weapon in the return game but might not be there for us at 48 (second round). If not, I think Delmas would be a great fit and think we should take him there or in the 3rd

Most scouts project Chung as a SS...
and Delmas at FS. Do you see something in Chung’s game that makes you think FS? I agree as far as Ellison goes. I think he’ll have great value at SS in rounds 3 and later.(If we wait that long for a safety pick)

you could get him easily in the second round. he is also more fit for our scheme than chung.

Delmas, Chung, and Johnson.
All three of them will be gone in the 2nd round. I think it is important to grab one of these three, as our current situation is horrendous and the FA class is not very impressive.

These three should be high priority targets in the second round. If I had my way, we would snag Johnson, but we’ll see if manages to slide to us. That being said, drafting for need can be a really poor draft strategy.

Multiple DTs
It is hard to get good DTs. Perhaps we should pick 3 DTs using higher draft picks and hope we get 1 really good one.

I think he may have a little better coverage skill than Sanders, but it’s hard to gauge his run support. Every thing I read about him at the senior bowl has said he is equally good at run support, but some scouting reports say flat out, that he needs to improve in that area.

Boy scouts
In paying more attention, some of the scouting seems to state what was true as if it is true. I don’t know if that’s the case, but it might be; if so, that would make Delmas an even more interesting option.
Since we’’ll have a D scheme next year, getting a good FS, in the draft or FA, is going to be essential. Barrett might get there, but one of his weaknesses right now is thinking too much and the demands of the position will require a different skillset

Safeties
Delmas is one of the Safeties we’ll be looking at around the 2nd round, and there are no good prospects in the 1st although Moore still deserves some consideration but his stock has dropped somewhat and should go later in the round.
Two Safeties of similar size/speed who rate high on intangibles are Delmas and Rashad Johnson. A third Safety deserving consideration in that ~2nd round range is Sean Smith, who’s bigger (6’3, 214lbs) and could fit at CB or SS, too.
It might be best if we distinguish between FS types and SS types since Safeties are increasingly diverging in their characteristics. Delmas and R. Johnson are both hard hitting center fielder types and their primary value to a team should be their coverage abilities (combined with aggressive hits on receivers) and their potential weakness will be in run support.
The SS types, led by William Moore, are usually very good at run support but often show potential limitations in coverage.
There’s nothing profound about the FS/SS schema but it’s a helpful tool for analyzing Safety prospects. And the better prospects are ‘less weak’ in their weakness area while maintaining their strength in their strong areas. Comparing all Safeties without regard to type can result in misleading ‘apples and oranges’ comparisons that pit one’s strength against the other’s weakness while ignoring the flip side comparison.
I think we’d like to find two Safeties in this draft but it may be more realistic to expect one (good one), and he may be either a SS or FS type (a later, less highly touted, pick could be added, too). Like many areas in this now expanded project of rebuilding the defense, fixing the Safety position should require more than one draft. This isn’t quite the tragedy it may seem since next year’s Safety crop looks even better. Moreover, we can realistically only draft one Safety high, or at least not without shorting another position.
I’d like to see us draft a Safety in the first four rounds, and the best spot appears to be in the 2nd round.
A final thought — two areas; Safety and ILB, are continuing needs in this draft/ or free agency. Looking at things from a building the 3-4 perspective, we should also be looking to add important elements that will provide a nucleus of our 3-4. One of these is a continuing need — DT/NT — which will undoubtedly be shaped to fit our new defense. Some other important areas are OLB and DE34, and I’d like to see us add at both if possible. There will be some offensive players drafted by us in the draft but I think people should temper their demands.
Good info 'Ski
I thought Moore was more of a true FS. I know he played more of a SS this year in his Rover position, but thought that his talent was best displayed when he was playing the center field FS position earlier in his career. Styg’s profile on him has some good info in the comments section about this.
I don’t think the people pushing for an offensive pick are necessarily demanding their pick of choice, but hoping for their favorite player to be in orange and blue next year as this is an exciting time for all of us. I enjoy hearing their opinions on why we should go RB in round one. I also have a couple offensive players that I’d love to see the Broncos take home with them in April. One is Shawn Nelson, the TE from S. Miss. He’s gotten a lot of press in recent days, and our chances of getting him in the latter rounds may have been hurt because of it. He’s not flying under any one’s radar anymore. The other position I’d like to solidify is center and either Mack, or Unger would be great, but I’m afraid they will be gone long before we are willing to address the offense in this draft.
From there, I'd like to say that the wheels came off, but that wouldn't feel like an accurate description. The wheels didn't just magically come off, the Raiders all got out of the car, shot the wheels off the own car, busted out the taillights, smashed the windshield and poured Splenda in the gas tank. Moore as a FS
That was part of his appeal but he hasn’t shown much lately that would back up his credentials as a FS. There’s several reasons for poor performances (relatively speaking) lately, and I’d dearly love to see how well he does at the combine. One-on-one drills at the Senior Bowl are important, as is the game itself, but the real test is the combine.
Moore’s going to have to get back into shape and rectify the damage done during his senior season. It’s easy to overstate this, however, and his senior statistics were hardly that bad, but they’re more in line with what a Safety in the box is required to do than a centerfielder FS type.
My personal preference is for someone without limitations in coverage, a FS type. I’d like an in-the-box type, a SS, but I’m not willing to sacrifice much in coverage. As I’ve said, we may get one good FS or SS this year, along with some not so good ones, but not both necessarily. Next year, as I’ve been promising every year, is going to be a wonderful year for Safeties.
Oh my god
if all the eligible guys declare, next year’s crop of safeties might be the most loaded in the history of the draft. Typically, there are only a few pretty decent safeties available in any one draft, but next year is going to be a godsend for safety-needy teams.

More on Louis...
Some post Senior Bowl comments about Delmas:
S Louis Delmas from Western Michigan was a big winner this week, showing versatility and leadership. Delmas is listed as a FS, but with his skills and a few extra lbs he could make the switch. In prognosticating a replacement for SS Roy Williams the Dallas Morning News said of Delmas, “Maybe too good for the Cowboys, since Delmas might have played his way into the top half of the second round. He might be the most complete safety in the draft.” Oregon’s Patrick Chung is another SS shooting up the draft board. He had a good week by several accounts.
9. Louis Delmas, S, Western Michigan – An aggressive safety that plays a lot bigger than what he really is. I think he’s emerged as the best safety in the draft. – Hortman, Football Jungle

a couple more from rotoworld and SI:
Louis Delmas of Western Michigan has reportedly been the most impressive safety at the Senior Bowl.
Delmas has allegedly outplayed Mizzou SS William Moore, who is considered a first-round prospect in some circles. Delmas is more of a center-field free safety type. He’s showed great closing speed and instincts in practice.

Louis Delmas/S/Western Michigan: Delmas displayed an array of skills from day one. He was effective in pass coverage, very tough against the run and showed a lot of leadership in the secondary. He has positioned himself as one of the top three safeties in the draft. – SI
Starting to sound like Louis has drawn too much attention to himself to expect to get him any later than the second round.

He may be worth a 2nd rounder. Look at what happened with eddie.

take a look at Rashad Johnson and Sean Smtth, too
I see all 4 being in that range, but it’s a question of where in the 2nd, or early 3rd. I really do wish we would trade down in the 1st and pick up an extra 2nd and 3rd. There are SO many more needs we could effectively address if we had more picks in this range.
I love Rashad Johnson
and I would him second out of the safeties listed. I would go Delmas, Johnson, Chung, Smith. A decent crop of guys, for sure, as more quality safeties seem to be coming out college in recent years. Bout time, too, because I love me some safeties.

Depending on Landry and Dawkins resigning with their teams...
any idea who will be looking at safety early in the draft?

and maybe give us a little better idea what may be available through day 1.

ESPN gets in on the Delmas praise and WMoore bashing...
4. Western Michigan S Louis Delmas
Delmas is another small-school prospect who showed he can compete with some of the nation’s elite this week. At 5-11 and 197 pounds, he lacks elite size, but he is a tough run-stopper who took excellent pursuit angles and did a nice job of breaking down into sound tackling positions. More importantly, he showed above-average instincts and range in coverage. Although he isn’t the biggest safety in the 2009 class and probably isn’t the fastest, either, he certainly is the most complete.
4. Missouri S William Moore
We have had concerns about Moore’s diagnostic skills and stiffness in his hips. Those concerns were confirmed when comparing him to other top safeties playing in the Senior Bowl, such as Delmas and Alabama’s Rashad Johnson. Moore still could be a top-40 selection because of his outstanding size-speed combination, but he won’t rank that high on our board.
What a difference a week makes. McShay says Delmas is now the most complete safety on the board, and kicks Moore out of his top 40. Hope Moore can put it together for the combine. He has to be second guessing his decision to stay last year.
Delmas has moved ahead of Chung on my own wish list. Every thing I read about this kid is positive, and his rock solid character and leadership abilities will keep him at the top of my safety list. Although I wouldn’t be upset to end up with Chung, Johnson, Harris, or even Vontae Davis and making him a safety, I will still be quietly pulling for Delmas from here to April. I’m officially on the bandwagon.

I tend to agree
This definately is not as strong a safety class as it could be, but I would probably put Delmas and Johnson ahead of Moore, I have heard the excuses for Moore, changing schemes, coaches didn’t use him “right”, but when you add up the game film from last year and the senior bowl, he may drop into 3rd round, I don’t know how much a strong showing at the combine will do, I think the Broncos and many other teams have gotten too worked up about combine numbers versus looking a tape, plenty of workout wonder guys have flamed out in the NFL.

It's amusing
I don’t have Moore on my wishlist at all. If it’s the 4th round, and we’ve already filled some holes and he’s sitting there, then give him a call. But a Day One pick (I’ll never get used to Day One being just 2 rounds, sorry)? Not anymore. To be honest, I’m not as high on Chung as a lot others are, and you bring up an idea I personally love in Vontae Davis. That kid is a player, but his attitude tends to scare me off. That being said, were we to somehow find us picking in the 16-20 slot, I would be very, very tempted to pull the trigger on Vontae Davis. That being said, if our second pick rolls around and none of the safeties are gone, I’ll say pick Delmas, but overlooking the excellent competition that Johnson played so well against is very hard for me. He’s already accustomed to big-time football and the spotlight wont make his eyes get any bigger. In reality, it’s really a minor thing in my mind, but all things being equal, the guy with the experience might just get the call.

You make a good argument for Johnson...
and I know a week of practice isn’t the same as playing four years in the SEC. But Delmas went up against the best seniors the NCAA had to offer, and did more than just impress a few scouts. It seems to be unanimous. I’ve read every report on him I can find, and I’m yet to find anything negative about him coming from Senior Bowl week. Add to that his character and leadership traits, I think he could really be a special player, and citizen for Denver.
We could do a lot worse than preform a safety experiment with Vontae. Worse case scenario, we should end up with a very talented, young CB. At that point, would it hurt to move Champ to safety, and tandem Bly with Vontae, if he proves to be the CB talent he’s being portrayed as? We all know Champ can cover, run support, tackle, and is smart enough to align the DB’s. Also buys us time to get into next year where Bly’s contract isn’t untouchable to move, and the safety class of the decade is due to hit the draft. I think it’s a very real possibility.

I love both guys
to be honest. I was just saying that, if all things were equal (which they obviously aren’t), the guy with the career playing big-time football would probably be my preference (though I always have had an affinity for small school prospects). Also, I think it might be a tab unfair to place Delmas’s performance for one week at the Senior Bowl on the same level as a career in the SEC, especially with how abnormally strong the SEC has been in recent years.
All of this being said, I’d still take Delmas. Or Johnson. Maybe Delmas. But Johnson is good, too. Damnit.
