The Greatest Bronco To Ever Wear #1 -
via starbulletin.com
Jason Elam, K -- 1993-2007
Some of these are going to be slam-dunk, no-brainers. Jason Elam was a stalwart for the Broncos for 15 years before leaving this off-season to play for the Atlanta Falcons . While it is sad to think someone who has meant so much to the Broncos over the years would not be able to finish his career in Orange and Blue, I'll choose to think of all the things he was able to accomplish as a Bronco and just how good he was at a position that is so critical to the success or failure of a football team.
For his career, Elam owns just about every scoring record in Broncos History, including Games Played, Points Scored, Field Goals Made, Field Goals Attempted, Field Goal Percentage, Extra Points Made and Extra Points Attempted.
Elam also earned League Honors, going to 3 Pro Bowls(95, 98, 2001), being named 2nd Team All Pro 3 times(95, 98, 2001) and receiving the Special Teams Player of the Year Award in 2001. Elam also shares the NFL Record for the Longest Field Goal(63 yards) with Tom Dempsey.
Someday, I'd imagine, Jason Elam will find his way into the Broncos Ring of Fame. His moving on to the Falcons does not diminish what he accomplished as a Denver Bronco and as one of the last links to the Super Bowl wins, Elam will always have a special place in the hearts of Broncos' fans everywhere.

I can't wait until you get to #6 . . .
which, of course, will be the Ultimate Showdown between Jay Cutler and . . . YES, BUBBY BRISTER, I SAID IT!
Anyway, I’m digging this By The Numbers thing.

agreed.
I would choose Cutler but I wish Brister would have stayed with us to replace Elway rather than Griese. I always thought Brister had the chance to be a star.

Unfortunately . . . .
Brister was somewhere around 40 when he joined us (maybe 35 . . . hell, I can’t remember). Even then, he was a better QB than Bob Griese’s Boy could ever dream of being.

Of course Bubby Brister, he was a class act and was a huge part of a super bowl winning season cmon
if Cutler grows to have half the balls and attitude Bubby had he will be an awesome QB someday.

9 Games indoors..
That’s why I wasn’t crushed by the move. It actually made more sense for Elam’s career to move indoors…

i hadn't thought about that...
but doesn’t brett kern deserve at least a shout out on the candidates. he has in his first year had a 46.3 punting average and leads all broncos punters in net average. i think he should at least be a candidate. elam deserves the win though.

I think TSG
is just reposting the first 9 he did last season and will start fresh once we get through those. Thats why Kern isn’t on there, at the time this post was written he hadn’t played at all.

Here's the best thing about Elam
He freed up draft picks on kickers for well over a decade. Each off-season, we didn’t have to worry about playing the NFL craps game that is “finding a good kicker”. I’m not sure he makes the Ring of Fame any time soon, though…
Beware the wrath of a patient adversary.

Very true
Plus we didnt have to worry about missing clutch kicks. Elam was seemingly always good for a game winner or a kick we really needed.
Go Broncos!

I think #1 should be retired, there will never be another kicker like elam in denver.

Please don't get into the number retiring thing.
Retired numbers should only be for a select few. I really think the only Bronco who had a career worthy of a retired number is John. Now don’t get me wrong. Floyd Little was a good player, one of our best. But to say that a certain number will never be worn again is saying that the player than wore that number will probably never be surpassed IMO. I like th idea of honoring a player and his number on the ring of Honor.
If you get into the retirement game, pretty soon you’re like the NYY where the lowest number not retired is something like 12 or 13 (not counting Jeter’s #2 that will eventually be retired and probably #6 that may be retired for Joe Torre).

He played in Denver for 15yrs and is tied for the longest field goal of all times.
In terms of kickers we probably will never see anything like him again. But b/c he is a kicker he probably won’t get the respect.

You want to place Jason Elam with John Elway, Floyd Little, and Frank Tripucka?
What about all the other great Broncos? To me a player must BE the Franchise to get his jersey retired.

Your back! Haven't seen you on the boards in a while. It looks like I owe you one.
At the begining of the season I said you would owe me one if John Lynch made it to the pro bowl. It doesn’t look like he is going to make it.

Was I against Lynch making it to the Pro Bowl?

This is a really fun way to remember back to all of the Broncos.
It’ll be fun to watch and see the polls. Great job.

Elam to the Ring!
I have to agree I was sweating Prater at times in 08, I miss the comfort that Elam brought when the game was on the line. He was a great Bronco and worthy of this vote as the best #1 Denver ever had.

Elam to the ring with a bullet
Nice post and great summary of his accomplishments and records. Elam seemed to be that rare kicker that had a lot of respect from his teammates, and provided mental toughness and leadership on the field. Not many out there like him, that’s for sure. And watching him kick that 63 yarder and run around the field in pure joy was just icing on the cake for that amazing 98 season. “Toro” only added to the legend. Don’t know about retiring #1, cuz I’m not crazy about number retirement … but if anyone other than #7 was a candidate, I could be persuaded about him. Regardless, though, he has to be a lead pipe lock for the ROF…

Elam, Ring of Fame worthy......no doubt about it.
My favorite moment was watching tie an NFL record with his 63-yard FG. I see the replay of it on my SB XXXIII Champion video. It just looks weird seeing Elam kicking the ball on the other side of the 50-yard line.
