RBs for 2009.

Okay MHR fans here are our RB options for 09’.  The lists below are self explanatory.  I put these  lists together because I wanted to hear what you all have to say about our options at running back for 2009.  For discussions sake which 5 RBs would you like to see in Orange and Blue next year?  If you pick RBs from the draft tell us why them, where you think they will go in the draft and justify using that pick for a RB verses another team need.  If there is anyone on the team you don’t want to see back in 09’ tell us why.  Thanks for your input, I look forward to reading what you all have to say.

RB to keep

Hillis
Torain
Aldridge
Bell if he gets in shape and stays in shape – he was too slow to the hole his first three games but started to look better towards the end of the season.
I have no names in specific from the draft but would draft 1 durable type every down back to compete and bring in at least one unsigned player of the same type. I would also entertain a change of pace back that could help with return duties. I am entertaining the idea of a real high quality back and what that adds to offense and keeping the defense off the field.

WHAT IS WITH

THE MANLOVE FOR TORAIN???

I was on that train but I jumped off. I can see the love for Powell but this guy is brittle and has an injury history.

McDaniels was the best option for this team. You CAN NOT overfocus on the defense and possibley have Jeremy Bates not progress with Cutler. McDaniels will watch over both sides of the ball, especially the O, while letting a defensive guy handle the D along with an intelligent GM.

Well, My picks would be

Hillis, Torain, Aldridge, Bell, and possibly getting someone like Ian Johnson from BSU, who flew under the radar this year, but he had a new QB and offensive line and Boise State went more in the air than on the ground, but I think he will be a good back, nice hands, and he runs hard.

Look for one of those NE FAs as a possible role player...

LaMont Jordan seemed to play well when he got a chance and Evans was decent in spots from what I can remember (I didn’t watch too many NE games over the past few years). However, I would also expect for the team to draft a RB in the first three rounds or take a run at one of the top-shelf UFAs listed (Jacobs, Ward, Sproles (LT?), Rickey).

I would also stick with Hillis, Torain, Aldridge, and Bell (one thing that was lost in the SD debacle was the great first half Tater had before the game got out of hand). However, if that’s all we have, it won’t surprise me if the offense struggles mightily next year.

I am afraid to say it!! :)

Hillis, Torain, Hall, Pittman

In the draft I go get Cutler his future Super Bowl buddy…Knowshon Moreno. The Broncos offense just became it’s own fantasy football team!

Marshall …………………… Clady, Hamiliton, Weigman, Kuper, Harris, Graham………………………..Royal
                                                                                 Cutler
                                                                                  Hillis
                                                                                Moreno

Who could stop your boys in Blue and Orange? Who you gonna cover? Who can key on? What can you key on, the run or the pass? Ohh I love the possiblities!!!

Outside of my dream, I wouldn’t mind Denver trading down and picking up an extra second or early third and get a quality RB after other needs are addressed.

I don’t think the Safety position should be addressed this year, next year the draft is loaded with Safeties.. I would go get Landry in Free Agency and work with Barrett, but if a quality guy falls on our lap, take him.

I am not even sure LB is as strong a need. If we get a LB all the sudden we have good players on the bench…Moss, Dumervil, WW, DJ, Larson…and the draft pick, some one will be riding pine and they can all play if used properly.

DT, yes that is an obvious need but if the first round pick is only 2-4% better than the second round guy why not wait?

Ahh the possibilites are endless…FA will open the window of insight a bit further, but for now it’s KM all the way!!

I think stokely is most underrated player on this team. He brings a veteran steadying hand to the offense( remember Atl Marshall was about to get a 15 yard penalty but Stok stopped him)

If you could somehow guarantee...

Mays is a Bronco next year, then I am 100% on board with you on this. Hillis and Moreno as our 1 – 2 punch, with a little Aldridge speed thrown in there? Not fair. Bring 8 into the box to stop our run game, please do it, and Jay, BMarsh, Royal, and Scheff will unleash hell on your secondary. Landry and Barrett should be more than serviceable in the secondary, but I’d still go safety in the second. That’s just me though, I’d draft a safety or corner every year. I’d collect them like Weird Al collects guys that run fast. I just have a thing for DBacks, leave me alone.

From there, I'd like to say that the wheels came off, but that wouldn't feel like an accurate description. The wheels didn't just magically come off, the Raiders all got out of the car, shot the wheels off the own car, busted out the taillights, smashed the windshield and poured Splenda in the gas tank. Then they all piled back inside and started screaming, "CAR WON'T MOVE, ME SAD NOW!" - MJD Yahoo Sports

Yep, only with a huge guarantee of some big time defensive stoppers.

Look at us? Who’s gonna stop us? Who’s gonna stop us? Oh….wait….every game has now become a shootout.

I think guaranteeing a defensive turnaround should be priority numero uno. I’m not happy with seeing Denver’s defense occasionally play with the same caliber as that of the Detroit Lions. One issue at a time…we’ll have to be patient with this as fans and let it build. Sure up a total team effort, then sprinkle in a dash of offensive firepower and then the Broncos will be truly unstoppable.

Good points, Ghost Who Walks

HT has pointed out that you only have so many dollars to spend, and a lot of positions to fill. We could have a monstrous offensive powerhouse, but in a few years it’s unsustainable. The D has been starving for talent, players and dollars for years – Starving it a little longer might not be the best prescription.

Yes, the CB position has gotten a lot of dollars, but we didn’t spend anything to protect them. It defeated the purpose. Defeating Indy is a great ideal, but SD proved this year that to do so you don’t need world-beaters at every secondary position – you need to push Manning out of his game.

High chance that Wiegmann retires.

If not this year, certainly next.

And a slight nit pick, but I think Marshall plays #1 WR (which is on the strong side).

Good thoughts all though!

A further point...

Gotta agree with Hillis (but not at Fullback), Torain and Pittman. I’d be fine with KM in the first but would be very disappointed if they pick Wells – I think he’s neither as tough or versatile as Moreno. Greene would be a good 2nd round pick but I’d prefer to take a defensive player. Rasheed Jennings could be a bargain in the third round.

I’m almost hoping Raji goes before 12 so my uncomfortable approach/avoidance about him becomes moot. As a further point, I’m also asking myself who I want to keep most from SD at 16. Moreno as the next Lt? It’s possible. Maualuga as the next Seau? I hope not. BJ thriving on their DF line? Ouch! A wrong choice at 12 compounds the injury.

Do my eyes lie to me?

Tater Tot Tatum was NOT that good. The other team KNEW we were going to throw. Anyone here could run if the other team let us.

Use our RB stable and draft one

In camp:
Anthony Alridge – quickness and field vision (change of pace)
Peyton Hillis – the Man!, great receiver, fearless, tough
P.J. Pope – showed some talent, potential
Ryan Torain – freak injuries, give him a shot (Shanny said 1st round talent)

J. Ringer – tough, talented, under the radar, saw him move to 2nd round in 1 mock draft

by BroncoConvert on Jan 27, 2009 9:56 PM MST reply actions

Here's my 2 cents

Hillis
Pittman
Bell
Torain
Aldridge

(In that order)

Forget drafting someone new unless it is a late rounder who can sit on the practice squad.

Pittman if he is going to keep playing football needs to be back on our team. He is the perfect back-up for Hillis. If not used as a workhorse, he will stay healthy all season and spell us when Hillis is winded…plus he can do everything…catch in the flat, pass block, short-yardage. He is money.

Bell is solid…I think it is hilarious that people are knocking him for being “slow”…he had no semblance of a football program going on when he was signed. He was a cell phone salesman. I’m sure his workout regimen wasn’t up to NFL standards. The guy needs some love for coming back and doing his job and doing it well.

And to think when they signed him last year everyone was moaning about him fumbling. How many fumbles did he have? Also, go back and look at how he ran in the San Diego game (if you can stomach the performance of the rest of the team). He was absolutely superb…two great break-away touchdown runs. This is just what he brings…the ability to take it to the house on any given play.

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

by sadaraine on Jan 28, 2009 12:29 AM MST reply actions

Completely agree with your top 5

Hillis should be starting tailback next year, not fullback, and not H-back. There are quality running backs in virtually every draft. We need a very large talent infusion on the defensive side. If the Broncos draft a RB high this year, I’m gonna puke.

Thanks to Mike Shanahan, a great coach who will be dearly missed. But...
Let's all get on the Mac Daddy Express!
Hillis for starter next year. He wears special thigh pads so his solid brass balls don't give him repeated thigh contusions.

McDaniels' offense calls for a RB who is...

as dangerous in the passing game as in the running game.

I see Hillis, Pittman, and Selvin Young all in the mold of what McDaniels likes to do.

I’m sure Denver will take a long look at Torain, but I don’t think he’s guaranteed anything other than a shot at earning 10 carries a game in the preseason and early regular season.

If Denver was going to pick up a FA back, I’d put Derrick Ward at the top of my wishlist, but there is NO WAY IN HELL Denver drafts a RB in the 1st round. Frankly, (IMO) I’m shocked that we are talking about it. I don’t even think the RBs in this crop are worthy of a 1st round status.

McDaniels will take brains over braun and ability any day of the week. Young may be injury prone, but Denver can use him similarly (not exactly) like Kevin Faulk was used.

Pttman is a tough-guy veteran and he’s cheap. And Hillis may end up getting the most carries next year, but I’d guess that Denver will tinker with his position as well as playing time. I wouldn’t be shocked to see him line up as Fullback, Tailback, H-Back, and TE at times next year.

by super7 on Jan 28, 2009 9:53 AM MST reply actions

I want to see Hilllis for sure.

I would love to bring Pittman back for one more year. He is a great back up for Hillis and an option at FB. I would like to see Torain, Hall, and Alridge brought in to camp. Additionally I would like to see us pick up Shonn Greene 5’10", 233, Iowa ideally in the 3rd round. I wouldn’t take him in the 2nd round I think we have more important needs to address there. Like a defensive player or maybe a Center.
I think we should try to trade Young for a late round pick in 2010, if possible.

by ThorpeBroncosfan on Jan 28, 2009 11:42 AM MST reply actions

Shonn Greene, Iowa

If we could get him in the 2nd Round. Did not get many receptions, however.

"Be not like dumb-driven cattle...."

by jcps on Jan 28, 2009 12:20 PM MST reply actions

Perhaps

The only knock is that he only had 11 receptions in his short career. If someone tested him and found that he ran tight routes and had good hands, he’d be a great pickup. Spock is right – the offenses of Denver and NE require a dangerous receiving threat as well as a one-cut back.

If Denver went into the season with the same running backs from last year

and drafted all defense and used any FA money on defense, Denver would be a better team than they were last year.

I hope we don’t draft an offensive player until 4th round or later.

My 2 cents

Tatum Bell – Better than most folks give him credit for, but not what I’m looking for.

Cory Boyd – No.

Alex Haynes – No.

Anthony Alridge – Folks give this kid a lot of credit based on a preseason game against a lot of back-ups. He also went down pretty quick. I give him an invite to camp and a 2nd chance. If he makes the team, I like him for a change of pace back.

Andre Hall – Same category as Selvin Young.

Peyton Hillis – My choice as starter.

Michael Pittman – Love his powerful style. If his neck injury is 100% cleared, I keep him in a heartbeat. If there is any doubt about re-injury to such a vital area, I wish him luck and advise him to retire.

P.J. Pope – No strong opinion.

Ryan Torain – Allow him to try out. One more injury and he’s a cut.

Selvin Young – A good possibility because of his hands. Like Torain, another significant injury cancels his value.

As for the FA and draft prospects, I won’t even start to consider a RB (for Denver) unless I know whether or not he’s a one-cut and downhill runner (I don’t even care so much if he’s power or speed oriented). But for what it’s worth, I think we have enough depth with the RBs to have a good season. Some injuries (like Hillis) were flukes, and not related to the team wide “ham string or torn groin” curse. I don’t think we need to go outside the team at this time.

Good thought provoking piece, and Rec’d!

Nice breakdown HT

I agree with you 100% on all but Bell. Care to expound a bit? What is it about him that you aren’t looking for? He’s as much a change-of-pace as Alridge, Young, or Hall.

For that matter…what are you looking for?

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

Thanks for your input HT.

I want to bring Hall back b/c people forget he played, the day after his mother died when we needed him. I also like that Bell came in and gave it all he had, so I think we bring him in to camp and give him a chance.

HT on a seperate note. Any chance you will be doing anything addressing how the coaches will assess our players. i.e. how do you determine if our current safeties will be any good in whatever new system they want to implement? I interesting in the process. Thanks.

Yes.

I’ll be submitting a related topic (differences between each LB position in a 3-4, and differences between the two DE positions) on Thu or Fri (Guru will choose what day the story actually goes online). I’m also assisting Steve’O and BroncoBear on a post they’re writing that relates somewhat to your question.

Last (but far from least) Styg50 has asked me to assist him with an in depth series that goes directly to your question.

Your question is at the heart of what I like writing about the most (systems, player types, etc). I’m sure that you are going to be enjoying the next few weeks at MHR especially!

great post

I would not look for a FA running back from this years available names.

I would not draft one before the 5th round unless one fell into the “best available athlete” in the first 4 rounds and fit Denver’s running/receiving style.
Interesting possibilities later in the draft could include Glen Coffey from Alabama or PJ Hill from Wisconsin. I think either would fit and could strengthen the roster.
From our current group:
Hillis (starter) and Pittman for short yardage/goal line and great maxprotect blockers and great receivers oui of the backfield. (this presumes that Pittman is cleared to play again)
Alridge as 3rd down change of pace often split out as a receiver. I was also impressed in his one good game that he runs tough inside and cuts well against the grain.
Torain and Bell as routine backs
Hall and Young raise fumbling and injury concerns.
The rest would just see how they perfrom in OTA’s and perseason.
