Brad's NFL Picks - Super Bowl 43 - February 1, 2009
Brad's Picks was 1-1 last week, correct when Pittsburgh beat the Ravens 23-14, but wrong when Arizona beat the Eagles 32-25.
Brad's Picks is 7-3 in the playoffs, and 168-97-1 on the season.
Home teams were 2-0 last week, and are 5-5 in the playoffs and 151-114-1 on the season.
There was one coast to coast game last week, with the visitor losing. Visiting teams on the opposite coast were 15-28 on the season.
George was 0-2 last week, and is 125-138-1 on the season.
Super Bowl 43. Kickoff will be about 4:30 MST.
Pittsburgh Steelers (14-4)at Arizona Cardinals (12-7) - I know, the game will be in Tampa Bay, but Arizona is designated the home team. The Las Vegas line is Steelers by 7. Weather in Tampa should be beautiful, around 60 at kickoff. This will be the 6th Super Bowl for the Steelers (they're 5-1), and the first for the Cardinals (dropping the number of teams that have never made it to five). Cardinals are the Cinderella team this year, and I'd like to see them win the game. But will they? Do they have a chance against the Steelers defense, which was ranked number one in the league all year? Sure they do, and here's why:
Arizona has played well all year, except for a few games at the end when they had their division locked up. They've been red hot in the playoffs, beating the Falcons 30-24; Carolina 33-13; and the Eagles 32-25.
Arizona's D has allowed just 3.6 yards per rush attempt by the oppo in the playoffs, and they have 7 sacks and 8 INT's in the playoffs.
WR Larry Fitzgerald is absolutely on fire (23 passes for 419 yards and 5 TD's in the three playoff games), and they'll have a healthy Anquan Boldin for the first time in the playoffs. Second year WR Steve Breaston had over a thousand yards in the regular season. Kurt Warner has thrown just 2 INT's in the playoffs. He completed 66.3 % of his passes and was sacked just 3 times.
RB's Edgerrin James and rookie Tim Hightower have been combining for upwards of a hundred yards per game in the playoffs.
Cardinals don't get rattled. They had a huge lead over the Eagles at halftime (24-6), but squandered it in the 3rd quarter. But late in the 4th, Warner led them from a 25-24 deficit to a 32-25 win.
Both teams will try to blitz, but Warner was the highest rated QB against the blitz this year (getting sacked just once every 30 blitz attempts), while Ben Roethlisberger was the most sacked (sacked every 6 blitz attempts). Ben was also the most sacked on 3rd down (once every six 3rd down pass attempts), while Warner was sacked once every twelve 3rd down pass attempts).
Steelers will have to use double coverage on Fitzgerald and Boldin, so if they do blitz, it leaves the middle wide open for James or Hightower.
Ben R can have real bad games - 3 INT's against the Colts, 4 fumbles against the Titans. Also, remember his performance in SB 40? 9 completions on 21 attempts for 123 yards, no TD's, 2 INT's. A 22.6 passer rating. But, he can also make some spectacular plays.
Ben has a sore back (x-rays or MRI or some such a few days ago). He'll play for sure, but how well? Also, Hines Ward sprained his MCL two weeks ago. He practiced on Thursday and Friday, but he will have to wear a brace on the knee.
Arizona's Head Coach is Ken Whisenhunt, who was the offensive coordinator in Pittsburgh through 2006. Then Bill Cowher retired, and the Steelers passed on Whisenhunt, naming young Mike Tomlin as HC. So, I'm betting Whisenhunt still knows more about the Steelers than Tomlin knows about the Cardinals.
The Steelers have led the league in defense all year, but they've only played four teams with a top ten offense. And they lost two of those games. The joker might be special teams. Neither team is very good on special teams, so do they cancel each other out or does someone make a big play?
So anyway, with all of that, I'm picking Arizona to win by something like 30-24. Fitzgerald will be the MVP. George will take the home team also.
Oh - the five teams that have never made it to the Super Bowl? Detroit, New Orleans, Cleveland, Jacksonville, and Houston.

30-24, huh?
One point off from my final. I picked Arizona 29-24. MileHighClubPresident (where has he been? I don’t know) is in Vegas right now on- i crap you not- an all expenses paid business trip to Vegas where he is staying in a four star hotel and riding motorcycles all day. So, naturally, we’re taking that nice $200 January bonus and betting it on the Cardinals!

How do you get...
…to 29 points?

My box score (4th quarter only)
Cardinals come in with a 20-17 lead. Steelers have the ball to start the 4th and march down the field. Ben Roethlisberger hits Hines Ward for a 7 yard touchdown pass. Steelers lead 24-20 with 11:37 to go. Cardinals get the ball and move down the field, but stalls at the 25 yard line. Neil Rackers hits the 42 yard field goal to bring it to 24-23 Steelers with 7:17 to go.
Teams exchange 3 and outs on their next possessions. Steelers get the ball to midfield with just under 4:00 to go, but Big Ben is hit by Bertrand Berry and throws a wobbly pass which is intercepted by Adrian Wilson, who returns it to the Steelers’ 42 yard line. After 2 incompletions and a run for no gain by Edgin Jaym, the Cardinals are faced with a 4th and 10 with 3:26 to go. Kurt Warner hits Anquan Boldin, who quickly laterals to Larry Fitzgerald. He runs it to the 25 yard line and gets out of bounds.
John Madden quickly goes into cardiac arrest, and Al Michaels uses his voodoo witch magic to heal him. Both suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, and are replaced by Vin Scully and a clone of Vin Scully, named Viin Scuully.
The Cards manage to get the ball to the 9 yard line at the 2 minute warning. On first and goal, Tim Hightower runs it to the 4. On second, Kurt Warner completes a pass to Steve Breaston, but only nets one yard. On third and goal with the game on the line, the Cards hand it off to Edgin Jaym, who carries James Harrison into the end zone for the winning touchdown. The Cards go for two to try to make it a 7 point game, but the pass falls incomplete. (I guess I only really needed that sentence, didn’t I? Oh, well.)
Time runs out, and th Vin Scullys make the most poetic Super Bowl sign off the Super Bowl has ever seen. Kurt Warner rides off into the sunset with his hot fellow grocery-bagging wife who has been through hell and back when you consider all that life has done to her, but Kurt still seems to get all the credit. Incidentally, she also seems to be aging in reverse like Benjamin Button.

You know, now that I think about it...
I’m pretty sure that the Colts scored 29 on the Bears a couple of years ago… although the only things I took away from that game were Prince and the fact that Rex Grossman is the most ungodly horrible quarterback to ever play in a Super Bowl. (He takes that honor from Craig Morton and his 0.0 rating in 1977.)
Disclaimer: I’m not saying Craig Morton was a bad QB, he just really, really sucked for that one game. After watching replays on YouTube (one was posted in a FanShot earlier, but I can’t find it), I have come to the conclusion that he was not good for that game.

Craig Morton
Broncos had to play Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and Oakland in the playoffs to get to the SB. Morton got the crap beat out of him. By the SB, his whole right side was black and blue. He could barely walk. Add to that that his Left Guard, Tom Glassic, had been ill and played the game at about 225 pounds, and you can see why Cowboys’ DL Randy White and Harvey Martin (?) were co-MVP’s of the game. If Morton and Glassic had been healthy, Broncos would have won that game.

Colts 29, Bears 17. Colts got a quick six on a late INT run back.

I wish Denver was playing Arizona
Obviously for the Super Bowl reasons but what I mean is…
Denver is 7-0 with 1 tie in all time matchups for a winning percentage of .938%. We have scored 235 points againts them and have only yielded 86…in other words…
We own them!

The way we played this year...
We’d probably give up another 86 points if we played them. And we might still win.

I love the pick, Bradley.
Now us St. Louis Area football fans that have set aside our differences with Bill (will not) Bidwill hope it comes true. At least the result, anyway. I don’t think the score will be quite that high.
I’m a Bronco for life. But it would be awesome to see Big Red pull this one off.

Wow, not much love for the Steelers
I honestly don’t see it being that close:

Cardinals 14

You know...you were one pick six away from getting it almost perfectly right.

If the Cards would have held the Steelers to a field goal...
…and then won it in OT on a TD, it would have been 29-23. One point off! Sigh… maybe next year.
