10 steps to bringing us back to contention
So i saw this article in which Mark Kislza of the Denver Post outlines 10 ways to improve over next season.
Thought the MHR faithful would have an opinion on this, interested to see what you guys think. For the most part I think I agree with what he says. Check it out.
1. Hire Steve Spagnuolo as coach.
The tradition began with the Orange Crush. Restore it.
Firing Mike Shanahan was a waste of everybody's blood- pressure medicine, unless the Broncos can find a replacement who brings a talent Shanny lacked.
Spagnuolo, defensive coordinator of the New York Giants, knows how to stuff people. Now, wouldn't that be a refreshing change in Denver?
2. Show Albert Haynesworth the money.
To fix this defense, it will cost Bowlen more than a contract for a new coach.
Denver goes off to work with the least intimidating front seven since Snow White's dwarfs. The two big-ticket, big-play free agents who could possibly hit the market this year are Carolina's Julius Peppers and Haynesworth of Tennessee.
Get one.
3. Hire Scott Pioli as general manager.
For a decade, the best organization in sports has been the New England Patriots. Three main reasons are Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and Pioli, the team's personnel guru.
While Jim Goodman has undoubtedly improved Denver's IQ on draft day, the Broncos need somebody to stop the expensive free-agent mistakes (see Niko Koutouvides) and desperate trades (see Dewayne Robertson) that Shanahan made.
4. Put Champ Bailey on trade block.
OK, I know what you're thinking. How could trading Denver's best defensive player help?
Listen: Bailey will be 31 years old before the next time he plays an NFL game. Not even a Hall of Fame cornerback can infuse your defense with nastiness. So see if Bailey could bring a haul of draft picks to rebuild a defensive unit with many holes. If no team makes the Broncos an offer they can't refuse, then No. 24 is back in starting lineup next fall.
5. Draft a Southern Cal Trojan.
In a college game in which scoring has gone wild, the only statistic to be trusted is the 9.0 points per game surrendered by USC. When the Broncos pick No. 12 in the first round, if they see Trojans linebacker Rey Maualuga or safety Taylor Mays on the board, it's a no-brainer.
6. Get a real tailback.
Enough with the "American Idol" approach to filling the position. Who's carrying the rock this week? Peyton Hillis or Clay Aiken?
Invest a second-round draft choice in a tailback. Anybody remember where Denver picked up Clinton Portis in 2002?
7. Keep Jeremy Bates, Bobby Turner.
Maybe the real masterminds of Denver's explosive offense are Bates, who called the plays, and Turner, the running backs coach who made Terrell Davis famous.
So maybe the lone condition for Spagnuolo or anybody else to get the job as head coach is a solemn promise to retain Bates and Turner.
8. Make John Elway your QB tutor.
Elway can smack a golf ball and cook a mean steak, but that doesn't make him a GM. Besides, locking himself in a dark room to watch endless videotape of 21-year-old defensive tackles is no way for an NFL legend to spend the rest of his life.
But there is a job with the Broncos that cries out for Elway's expertise. As a quarterback, Jay Cutler has it all, except the demeanor for the toughest political job in Colorado. Hire Elway as an executive consultant toBowlen, whose first task for the Duke would be to tutor Cutler.
9. Don't lose a brick in the wall.
The Broncos' offensive line was the best since tackle Gary Zimmerman left the building. Make sure 35-year-old center Casey Wiegmann, a wise graybeard contemplating retirement, sticks around Dove Valley another year.
10. Roll back ticket prices.
There was one aspect of firing Shanahan that perhaps Bow- len could not possibly fully understand. With new Broncomaniacs standing in the unemployment line every day, it does not sit well to see a coach get paid $20 million to go away.
So give loyal Denver fans a break. Cut ticket prices by 5 percent and see how much karma it will buy the Broncos.

Not Bad...
I’m not sure about Champ, but it can’t hurt to shop him so long as he’s part of the process…

Outside of
Cutler, Marshall, Royal, D.J., and the O-line I think everyone is trade-able, cut-able, etc… I may have forgotten someone, but you get the point. Historic coach is shown the door let’s everyone in the house know dad’s not taking crap from anyone. I’d prefer to have a healthy Champ in the secondary with a [fill in the USC defensive player of your choice], but if we could somehow manage to swing a #1 pick for him, I’d really consider moving him. That being said, if Champ can stay healthy, he’s still a damn good corner and someone I’d like to root for, not against. :)
Good post. I think it will be interesting how we approach the offseason. I’m still not convinced we’re bringing in a new GM, but if we do then he’ll (she’ll) will have a certain approach to the type of players they try to sign (big FA signing versus low-budget gems).
I wish Woody Paige was our coach!

She'll? This is a man's game... ;)
Yes, I'm a Diamondback and Suns fan. So you may be wondering, "Why does this fool like the Broncos so much?"
A: The Cardinals are too hard of a pill to swallow. Oh yeah and that Elway dude....

I would love 10, but it ain't going to happen
Not when you got 30,000 plus waiting for season tickets. I also don’t see us being a big player for Haynesworth, I find it ironic the two seasons he has done well were contract years, I imagine signing him for a big contract and having him revert to the underachiever he has been for all of two seasons. I would obviously argue Cowher over Spags, but if Cowher says no, then I think Spags would be the next best option at this point.

Item #7
I would add Dennison (Offensive line coach) to the keep list.

I definitely agree with a few of these
I listed them in my fan post :)

Wiegmann
If he were to retire they could move Hamilton to center and draft a guard or put Kory at LG. Good points all the way round, they might be better off if Wiegmann retires cap wise. Have a young line for the next 10 to 15 years. I could be wrong but I hope he retires.

This doesn't sound like Kiszla
Unless he is just trying to get on the fan’s sack right now.
I will tell you right now the Broncos are going to have to be a lot more creative than this to improve in 09. Several of those above options pretty much apply to every team in the league, or have little chance of happening.

I seem to be the negative one here
1 – sure. spags is fine
2 – nope. Haynesworth has two good years and they were his contract years. No chance to get him to sign an incentive laden deal
3 – nope. Let’s leave the Goodman’s. They have been fine. Niko is not a high priced free agent. Boss Bailey is. And I don’t see the problem with trading a whole lot of nothing for a defensive lineman (D-Rob) who was clearly worthy of being a starter on this team.
4 – nope. Why risk alienating Champ and others on the team when there is little chance of finding a suitor. I just dont see any teams offering up multiple mid round picks for champ at this point. And I don’t anticipate Denver taking a $10 million cap to get mid round picks even if they were offered
5 – can’t argue with the USC defense
6 – Too many needs on defense to waste a high pick on a RB. I can deal witha year of Pittman, A Hall and Hillis wirh a decent vet free agent added to the mix. (we’ll see if Torain or Alridge or Yound can stay healthy)
7 – I’d add Rick Dennison, but no argument from me
8 – Does Cutler rally need a tutor/babysitter? It sounds like he has a fine relationship with Jeremy Bates and adding Elway is just gonna add unnecessary complication and the potential for conflicting messages.
9 – no argument here. K-Lich might be ready to play, but another year of seasonign would not hurt. Plus keeping K-Lich as a backup allows Kuper to slide out to tackle if there is an injury out there.
10 – nice pipe dream. Especially considering that half the fans were willing to accept Shanahan to get that $20 million to coach and the other half were calling for him to get the $20 million to not coach. There are much better arguments to be made for freezing and/or reducing ticket prices.

I especially agree with your 6th point...
only if the stars align do I want us using a high draft pick or big FA signing. I really think our current stable of RBs gets us through next year. It was quite the anomaly to see all of them go down. I want our draft/FA focus to be defense. Now, if some stud RB falls to us ala Clinton Portis, then I won’t lose sleep if we pull the trigger.
I wish Woody Paige was our coach!

Agreed
Give Hillis a a chance to be the starter. He showed some great flashes in the 3 or 4 games that he started. Concentrate on fortifying the defense.
Thanks to Mike Shanahan, a great coach who will be dearly missed.
Since we have to hire someone, please get a defensive coach Mr. Bowlen.
Hillis for starter next year. He wears special thigh pads so his solid brass balls don't give him repeated thigh contusions.

Except,
I’d rather see Alridge get a chance over Hall. Those two fumbles in the NE game were the kicker for me. We were in the game until Andre put the ball on the ground killing two consecutive drives!
I think Alridge’s injury was due to him taking all of the carries in the final pre-season game against the Cards. It did show that he is not an every down back, but a good change of pace back. I think with he and Hillis, we’ll have the thunder and lightning that most of us are looking for.

hillis and anyone who plays like sproles
could that be alridge, i don’t know, but one of the fast backs will step it up. i want the backup from buffalo, fred jackson. 2 hammers-with hillis, and 2 small/quick backs(alridge, young, hall, bell, pope…) should about do it. and torain. now, on to the defense.

Kislza is an Idiot.
I don’t know why they still let him write.
1. I’m sure the Browns thought the same thing when they hired Romeo Crennel. Just because Spags is a great DC doesn’t mean he’d even make a fair HC, or that he’d build a good defense. Lot’s of great DC’s have had mediocre defenses as HC.
2. I would expect a sports journalist to know how often high priced free agents bomb. This is a team sport. Even if he played at the same level that he has this year, he would just make us a lousy defense that got sacks unless had significant upgrades at all the other positions.
3. Now he’s worried about expensive free agent mistakes? Didn’t he just recommend a very high priced free agent gamble in 2. The front office should get a chance to prove that last year’s draft wasn’t a fluke. And the D-Rob trade was actually good for us.
4. I wouldn’t single out any one defensive player. The new DC will need to look at everyone and see who fits.
5. Because USC players always pan out? Where’s Leinart or Bush these days. The only thing certain about the draft is that most of the players taken in the early rounds don’t live up to the hype (whihc makes Clady so F’ing awesome!) There are lots of defensive players and we have lots of needs. Take the best players available and don’t reach for someone on reputation. Look at some of the sure thing defensive players from last year.
6. Instead of defensive players? Only if he truly is the best player available. How many tailbacks actually succeed in this league?
7. Turner yes! Bates maybe/maybe not. For all the hype what’s he actually done? Broncos could move the ball without scoring points before he became OC. Seems like we still move the ball without scoring points.
8. Is there any evidence at all that Elway can coach? Great players, especially great QBs almost never make even decent coaches.
9. This makes sense, to a point. But sooner or later we need to replace him and I don’t see us going to the SB next year so what’s the big deal?
10. Other than pandering to the fans, how does this makes the Broncos better?

I’m not sure if there is any evidence that Elway can coach (though he was the QB coach for his son at Cherry Creek – honorary, I’m sure), but I find it more incredible that people think that he would make a good GM! What has he done that would warrant this kind of position?
I know that he and Bowlen co-own the AFL Crush, but last I saw, the AFL is taking this year off. If he and Bon Jovi were such great additions to the league, would it really need to go into hiatus for a year?
I think that Elway as a QB coach/assistant wouldn’t be such a bad idea. Maybe he can teach Jay how to look off defenders, control his arm strength and not throw red-zone INTs!

10 Ways to REALLY Improve the Broncos
1. Regardless of who is hired as HC, get a great DC.
2. Commit to the zone-block one-cut running systems by retaining Rick Dennison and Bobby Turner. Not sure any of the other coaches matter.
3. Hire a great STs coach. We haven’t had decent STs since Dennison was the coach.
4. Commit to the long term rebuilding of the defense through the draft the same way we rebuilt the offense. Use FAs wisely and sparingly (see Weigman).
5. Insist on fundamentally sound physical play. Don’t be afraid to get rough, but don’t sacrifice good tackling just to make a highlight real.
6. Commit to running the football. Continue pounding it even when it doesn’t seem to be working at first.
7. Commit to stopping the run with the front 7. Eight in the box should be the exception, not the norm.
8. Get an attitude at home, “Not in our house!” Teams should be afraid to play at Invesco; home field should be an advantage.
9. Hit the QB! Do it again and again. I don’t care if you sack him but hit him, again and again. Make a commitment to pressure whether it’s the line or by blitz.
10. Nothing less than the relentless, determined, pursuit of excellense, every game, every play, should be acceptable. Mistakes will happen, but that doesn’t make them acceptable.

I agree as much as it pains me.
Towards the end of the season I started to think to myself….Why do my bronco’s suck? What can we do to get better defensive players? My answer was to trade Champ Bailey for a bunch of draft picks or some defensive play maker that can make a difference other than when the ball is thrown his way.
Don’t get me wrong i love champ playing for us but he usless with no ball pressure on the QB.

that would work except
No one is going to give us a bunch of picks for Champ and we can’t afford the cap hit. It’s also why Bly will be at the other CB next season. We can’t afford to get rid of either of them.

My Top 10 Compared to the original up top.
1. Agree HIre The Giants D-Coordinator. (But we need to get guys upfront to make that work. We have no Strahan, J. Tuck, or Osimenora (Can’t spell it) to bring the heat he would want. )
2. All Year I’ve wanted Haynesworth. But will we give him the money? We might use that money to get multiple players. But I think Albert would still give great effort. No defensive players for the Titans feel they get the name rec they deserve. We might could help with that.
Peppers would also be a good choice. He would help stop the run, Create pressure and give us a little bit more speed off the edge. Until Elvis proves to stop the run he’s a backup at best.
3. If He’s available GET EM’!
4. Already talked about Champ. (Worth Keeping and at the same time worth trading) Hell you can have his brother too.
5. Please get a USC player. There’s only a handful that don’t pan out. Reggie is not a bust. Leinard is. But there defensive players usual work out.
6. We definitely need a complete running back with power, speed and hands.
Maybe we could steal away one of Carolina’s backs or #2 RB from the vikings. I can’t think of his name right now.
7. Keep our own offensive coaches.
8. Skip adding Elway as a coach. Don’t need that over Jay.
9. At All Cost Keep This O-Line in Tact. (this should’ve been toward the top of the list.)
10. This would help create a dominate home atmostphere to win. I’ve still never made it to a NFL game. But someday, one day i will…..
