Featured Poll of the Week - 1/5/09
Each week will bring you a different poll to guage where your thoughts are on hot topics in the world of the Orange and Blue. Last week I asked if it was time for Mike Shanahan to go. The next day Pat Bowlen made all that talk null and void by firing the long-time coach.
Now the search is on, and there is some good debate about whether the Broncos should go with an offensive mind or a defensive mind. So I ask, Broncos fans.....

Need a third option....
It doesn’t matter. I think the DC should have a defensive background; the OC should have an offensive background. The head coach should understand the whole game and know how to maintain balance between offense and defense.
Tony Dungy had a defensive background, but Indy has been known for their offense; not defense.
Brian Billick was an offensive expert, but his Raven’s teams were noted for their defense.

I am specifically talking about the Head Coach....

I know...
I don’t think it matters what the head coach’s background is.
by SlowWhiteGuy on Jan 5, 2009 12:27 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
I disagree....
though I think there are examples each way to support either argument. Take Brian Billick, for example. Wa the OC in Minnesota when they are breaking scoring records, goes to Baltimore and can’t score to save his life.
I think it matters from the sense of what kind of football team you are going to be. What is the identity. I think it is time for a coach with an attitude to come in a remind the Broncos of what it means to play defense, what it means to defend the home field and what it means to hit people.

When a team hires a coach on the otherside of its talent (i.e., Billick/Bal, Gruden/TB, Dungy/Ind),
it usually keeps the staff on the talented side of the ball in tact (i.e., Lewis, Kiffin and Moore). Those teams continued to dominate on the talented side of the ball, but never really reached any level of dominance on the side of the ball that the new coach specialized in. However, each of those coaches brought the side of the ball they were brought in to fix to a serviceable level and each won a super bowl.
That could happen here, I suppose. However, our talented side of the ball is young, inconsistent, and needs to be handled with baby gloves, where Baltimore, TB and Indy’s talented sides were ready to go. Thus, I feel we should bring in an offensive guy that inks a solid DC on to his staff, like Bob Slowik (KIDDING), like Mike Nolan, Eric Mangini (if it falls through in CLE), Romeo Crennel, etc. That way, the offensive guy can continue to bring along our offense and hand over the defense to a solid coordinator and get him some talent in the draft and FA and we’re on our way.
However, it’s hard to argue with the second part of you comment.
"Choose the sword, and you will join me. Choose the ball and you join your mother, in death. You don’t understand my words, but you must choose. So… come boy, choose life or death."

Nice analysis

ditto, good analysis
That’s been my impression, too, ButteBronco.
SlowWhiteGuy is getting at a point, too, that is — the assumption that hiring a HC who has specialized in the area where the team is weak will necessarily improve that part of the team is just that, an assumption. It’s not necessarily true, although I think it’s generally the case that defensive specialist HCs do improve that side of the team.
I’d didn’t like the poll because it implied that the decision over a HC was fundamentally a decision to improve our defense by bringing in a HC who specialized in that area. It’s not a terrible assumption, and it’s probably true, but if the decision is made primarily on that basis then we need to reexamine the criteria we’re using to make the decision because that’s a little too simplistic — IMO.
I hope that whoever we hire is able to make an imprint on our defense, but it would probably be better if that HC was a skilled administrator/overseer. I would add evaluator of talent, too, but that might fall more in the bailiwick of the new GM. None of these functions need be solely the province of one person or persons, though. The coaching staff and administration need to accomplish these tasks by whatever means necessary. It’s more about obtaining results rather than rigidly compartmentalizing duties under titles.

Agreed TSG
An attitude on defense, as well as an identity, is really what we need. When we won our Super Bowls we had guys like Romo and Atwater. Nobody wanted to get hit by those guys.
SWG, a HC’s background does matter. We suck at defense and need someone to smack us in the head and wake us up. Look at Mike Shanahan, he is an offensive minded coach and he made our offense really click as soon as he arrived. Now that we have the offense in place, now it is the defense’s turn.

Defense...
however, I think the point someone brought up about getting the best HC is a compelling argument. A HC better be a damn good adminstrator, leader and—one would hope—an expert in at least one area of football’s big 3 (O, D, ST) and knowledgeable and/or respectful of all 3 (for example, I hate coaches who poo-poo ST). All that being said, I think the clamor is for us to bring a defensive attitude to the position. I’m all for it.

With it appearing more and more likely a coordinator is going to get promoted....
It becomes, at least on the outside, a decision between offense and defense. We’ll really not know about all the intangibles until the guy comes in and gets his feet wet. Until then we have to rely on what kind of production he was able to generate from the side of the ball he focused on….

I voted offense. This team will win championships through our offense.
I would like to see some changes in our scouting department to shift the focus to defensive talent. I think our problems lie in how we have drafted. I’d like to see a top defensive assistant being promoted to DC. Maybe an assistant from Rex Ryan’s team or R. Morris’ team or Spag’s team. Hiring a Defensively minded head coach will not necessarily change anything. It starts with talent and defensive scheme. Whoever we hire will not likely be the end all be all….we need someone who knows what it takes to win Championships and that is who Pat Bowlen will ultimately take as a head coach.
This is my GAP, there are many like it but this one is mine. Without my GAP I am useless, without me, they will run through my GAP. I will protect my GAP and have my brothers back on his. I will not be moved from my GAP, I am a crazed dog that patrols this area and will defeat all who entire it. I own this GAP, it is mine. I bought it with blood and sweat. I will not be pushed. I will not be moved. This Sunday I will make a stand and a statement.

I couldn't vote . . .
I believe they should do their best to hire the best coach available, whether offensive or defensive.
Personally, I wonder if they shouldn’t give Dennison a long look . . .

I dissagree with the options in this poll
I truely believe that offensive or defensive backgrounds come lower on the list and character and attitude are way above which to go farther is what we need in a leader at HC and also still on the field our team really still needs a personality i know we all like the guys on the field that dont talk and show up everyday and still get the job done but we are lacking that guy who is the catalyst of our team our Shannon Sharpe, Bill Romanowski, our Ray Lewis call it what you want spread to thin due to all his other duties but that is what Shanny missed I love champ but need a little more dieon and ray those teams (Atlanta,Baltimore) never had the talent we do but played like they still wanted to. lets light that FIRE

Problem with an O guy
Wouldn’t he want to come in and totally redo the offense? New playbook, scrap the zone block system, etc.

even with a defensive hc
isn’t it likely he will bring in a familiar/proven oc to work with cutler? if we keep denny and bates, then maybe we can resemble the offense we are used to seeing. if not, it is all on the table, including the zb scheme. of course, we have a ready-made o-line, that a smart coach would let do what they do best. scripted plays, i doubt it. who hires an oc anyway, the head coach or gm? and is it certain we are going to acquire a gm, and who are those candidates? anyone in house? dc prospects anywhere? will the defensive hc call the d plays on sunday? probably not. lots of questions, no answers. aaarghhh! who is going to be the dc, that’s what i want to know most.
