Shannon Sharpe Named a Finalist For Hall of Fame
Four first-year eligible players, John Randle, Shannon Sharpe, Bruce Smith, and Rod Woodson, are among the 17 finalists who will be considered for election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame when the Hall's Board of Selectors meets in Tampa, Florida on Saturday, January 31, 2009.
Joining the four first-year eligible players, are nine other modern-era players, two contributors and two players nominated earlier by the Hall of Fame's Senior Committee. The contributor finalists are former National Football League Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and Buffalo Bills founder/owner Ralph Wilson, Jr. The Senior Committee nominees, announced in August 2008, are former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Bob Hayes and former Atlanta Falcons defensive end Claude Humphrey. The other modern-era player finalists include wide receiver Cris Carter; center Dermontti Dawson; defensive end Richard Dent; guard Russ Grimm; defensive tackle Cortez Kennedy; guard Bob Kuechenberg; guard Randall McDaniel; wide receiver Andre Reed; and linebacker Derrick Thomas.
To be elected, a finalist must receive a minimum positive vote of 80 percent.
Listed alphabetically, the 17 finalists with their positions, teams, and years active follow:
- Cris Carter - Wide Receiver - 1987-89 Philadelphia Eagles, 1990-2001 Minnesota Vikings, 2002 Miami Dolphins
- Dermontti Dawson - Center - 1988-2000 Pittsburgh Steelers
- Richard Dent - Defensive End - 1983-1993, 1995 Chicago Bears, 1994 San Francisco 49ers, 1996 Indianapolis Colts, 1997 Philadelphia Eagles
- Russ Grimm - Guard - 1981-1991 Washington Redskins
- Bob Hayes - Wide Receiver - 1965-1974 Dallas Cowboys, 1975 San Francisco 49ers
- Claude Humphrey - Defensive End - 1968-1978 Atlanta Falcons, 1979-1981 Philadelphia Eagles
- Cortez Kennedy - Defensive Tackle - 1990-2000 Seattle Seahawks
- Bob Kuechenberg - Guard - 1970-1984 Miami Dolphins
- Randall McDaniel - Guard - 1988-1999 Minnesota Vikings, 2000-01 Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- John Randle - Defensive Tackle - 1990-2000 Minnesota Vikings, 2001-03 Seattle Seahawks
- Andre Reed - Wide Receiver - 1985-1999 Buffalo Bills, 2000 Washington Redskins
- Shannon Sharpe - Tight End - 1990-99, 2002-03 Denver Broncos, 2000-01 Baltimore Ravens
- Bruce Smith - Defensive End - 1985-1999 Buffalo Bills, 2000-03 Washington Redskins
- Paul Tagliabue - Commissioner - 1989-2006 National Football League
- Derrick Thomas - Linebacker - 1989-1999 Kansas City Chiefs
- Ralph Wilson - Team Founder/Owner - 1960-Present Buffalo Bills
- Rod Woodson - Cornerback/Safety - 1987-1996 Pittsburgh Steelers, 1997 San Francisco 49ers, 1998-2001 Baltimore Ravens, 2002-03 Oakland Raiders
Carter, Dent, Grimm, Hayes, Humphrey, Kuechenberg, McDaniel, Reed, Tagliabue, Thomas, and Wilson have all been finalists in previous years. Although they were eligible in previous years, this is the first time Dawson and Kennedy have been finalists.
From this year's list, five players - Dawson, Grimm, Kennedy, Kuechenberg and Thomas - spent their entire NFL career with just one team.
Hayes and Humphrey were selected as senior candidates by the Hall of Fame's Seniors Committee at their August 2008 meeting. The Seniors Committee reviews the qualifications of those players whose careers took place more than 25 years ago. The remaining 15 modern-era finalists were determined by a vote of the Hall's 44-member Board of Selectors from a list of 133 preliminary nominees that earlier was reduced to a list of 25 semifinalists. To be eligible for election, modern-era players and coaches must be retired at least five years while a contributor need not be retired.
At the 2009 election meeting, the selectors will thoroughly discuss the careers of each finalist before narrowing the field to seven candidates (two senior and five modern-era). At least four candidates must be elected but the total class cannot number more than seven.
Of the 2009 finalists, Hayes has been eligible for 29 years, Humphrey 23 years, Kuechenberg 20 years, Grimm 13 years, Dent seven years, Thomas five years, Dawson, Kennedy and Reed four years, McDaniel three years, Carter two years, and Randle, Sharpe, Smith, and Woodson are in their first year of eligibility. Contributors need not to be retired to be considered for Hall of Fame election. Therefore there is no specific year at which Tagliabue and Wilson first became eligible for consideration.
The Class of 2009 will be announced at a press conference at 2:30 p.m. (ET) on Saturday, January 31, at the Super Bowl media center.
Representatives of the accounting firm Deloitte & Touche will tabulate all votes during the meeting. At the press conference, they will present Pro Football Hall of Fame President/Executive Director Steve Perry with an envelope containing the names of the nominees elected. Each newly elected member will be contacted immediately by the Hall of Fame. Members of the Class of 2009 in Tampa for the Super Bowl will be asked to join the press conference. Those not able to attend will be asked to join via teleconference.
The Enshrinement of the Class of 2009 will take place at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, on Saturday, August 8, 2009. The Enshrinement Ceremony will be televised live by both ESPN and the NFL Network. The annual Hall of Fame Game will be played on Sunday, August 9, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. and broadcast live by NBC. Teams have not yet been announced.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival, a multi-day celebration of the enshrinement of the newest Hall of Fame Class, is held each year in Canton. The festival which culminates with the Enshrinement Ceremony and NFL Hall of Fame Game includes 15 special public events over an 11-day period. Two major events are the Enshrinees Dinner (Friday, August 7), and the Enshrinees GameDay Roundtable (Sunday, August 9). It is at the Enshrinees Dinner where each member of the Class of 2009 will be presented his gold Pro Football Hall of Fame Jacket. At the Enshrinees GameDay Roundtable, the Class of 2009 will be featured center stage as they share memories of the game and their personal feelings about being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Ticket information for the Enshrinement Ceremony, NFL Hall of Fame Game and the Pro Football Hall of Fame Enshrinement Festival events can be found on the Hall of Fame's website (Profootballhof.com).

TD got screwed...
Cortez Kennedy? come on! TD was a better football player than many on that list. Then again, only one Bronco could ever be allowed on this list per year. Next year TD! Next year. Sharpe will get in….he BETTER get in.

It's called being a Bronco fan.
They should make a COD: Broncomania for PS3.
btw, I just got my PS3….freakin’ sweet! I sold my PS2 and some other personal items in order to convince the wife that its okay to buy. lol The length’s us men go to in order to get things we want rather than need.
Anyways, I’ve been playing COD 4 and COD 5 constantly…it’s becoming an addictive problem I think. I have yet to even open Madden 09….
I am Zapparulez on the Playstation Network in case anyone wants to come shoot my ass.

Haha, depends on the game
I agree that a mouse and keyboard destroy a game controller in accuracy in shooters (and it’s no comparison in strategy games), but sports games are much better on a console since the dual joystick controller set-up was essentially designed to play them.
Also, game consoles are a lot more fun when you have friends in the room, since you can play multi-player split screen on the same machine.

However, for some reason, the PS3 version looks terrible compared to the 360 version.
I don’t know why.. It’s just kind of fuzzy. And you can’t go online with it, but I’d rather play by (with) myself anyway. And I don’t really have any friends that like to play games not called Halo 3. Which you can’t get on a PS3. I like the little triggers on the XBOX controller. Makes me feel like I’m really pulling a, you know, trigger. And shooting something.
I wish the 360 supported Blu Ray though. I’ll admit that the PS3 has it beat there. But I think that the 720, which according to my inside sources (my Wii-playing history teacher) will support Blu Ray.
And make sure you get Gears of War 2 if you like FPS’s. Oh wait, you can’t….

I just rebuilt my computer and put dual 512s in with a 64 bit AMD core, so in theory I could handle it, but I went with windows 2000, and securom copy protection just isn’t compatible with it, and all these cool new games seem to be using it… :(

Sounds like a great setup
Do they make a 64 bit version of Win2k?
I put 64 bit WinXP on my rig, and while it doesn’t make a difference with most things, anything built on 64 bit architecture absolutely flies.
I just hate that you cant buy XP anymore. Vista takes too many system resources, so it nullifies almost any performance advantage you get from upgrading the computer.

Haha, I can't talk too much...
I just built a pretty nice rig this fall – 2.6 ghz quad core AMD with dual 512mb video cards and 4gb of ram. That was only because my laptop died though… Haha. My excuse was that Matlab and Solidworks both take lots of system resources, so I needed a good computer to handle them (even though most of the time I just need Word and Excel). I was pretty excited, though, because I was able to build from scratch what would cost about $4000 from Dell or someone like that for only about $1300 (thank you newegg).

Yeah, it is
You can actually get an HDTV pretty cheap if you have the extra cash to blow. A few years ago (when I was in HS and had a job and no obligations – haha) I was able to get a 27" CRT that supported HDMI (and 1080i) for about $400 and I can imagine that they’ve dropped in price since. Another option is just a computer monitor. A friend of mine got a 24" LCD on sale for around $350, and you can get a converter to go between DVI and HDMI to use it like a TV if you don’t mind not having a remote.
by hai17 on Jan 6, 2009 7:40 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
computer monitor
my wife picked one up on sale, a real beaut, and she brought it home for me for Christmas in 07. THing was, not only did it not have the benefit of a remote, it didn’t have any buttons on the monitor either!!!
I swear it had me stumped. I looked it up on line and it said to turn it on you just ahd to push the power button… WTF? There’s no power button!! There are no buttons of any kind. I actually turned it on by grabbing it harshly out of frustration. It sang a little song and went to the setup menu, but I didn’t want to let go of it since I was afraid I might turn it off… turns out that the buttons were some kind of wierd “static touch” buttons. you bring your finger close to them and they operate, but you don’t actually push them.
Wierdest damn thing I have ever seen, and they only light up when there is a signal coming to the monitor from the DVD player or whatever. Without anything hooked up to it is just sits there and refuses to cooperate…

Haha, Awesome
That’s a really funny mental image. I guess that theoretically it makes sense for the buttons to only light up when an input is present, but that’s definitely a case of over-engineering something. With things like user interfaces you should probably apply the “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” rule.

I usually agree with ya, zappa
but I think—like Elway—you have suppressed DT’s impact on the game and forgotten how good he was. His stats alone make him sure fire HOF’er (126.5 career sacks, 11.5 avg per season over his entire career, 20 sacks in one season, 7 sacks in one game, etc). But more importantly, he forced opposing teams (like ours) to game plan around him. Players like him (Reggie White is another great example) regardless of their character, command football respect by the way teams react to him. Maybe my memory isn’t what it used to be, but he simply terrorized QBs. Again, I wish we had a DT on our squad. And if he underutilized his talent, then god forbid if he ever “maxed” out his talent ecause he’d be the greatest LB ever. And he’s a definite first ballot HOF. Best LB of the 90s hands down. One of the best LBs ever. Sorry to over-react, but we bitch at the writers who snub Broncos all the time. I want to be consistent and defend those that deserve to be in, regardless of team affiliation.
I wish Woody Paige was our coach!

So the deadline to keep my enshrinement seats is Friday
They aren’t good seats (there are really no bad seats at a stadium that small) but at least it guarantees me a spot in the stadium to watch Shannon get inducted.. Do I mail in the form or not?

Do it man...It's freakin' Shannon Sharpe!
I envy you. :P
This is my GAP, there are many like it but this one is mine. Without my GAP I am useless, without me, they will run through my GAP. I will protect my GAP and have my brothers back on his. I will not be moved from my GAP, I am a crazed dog that patrols this area and will defeat all who entire it. I own this GAP, it is mine. I bought it with blood and sweat. I will not be pushed. I will not be moved. This Sunday I will make a stand and a statement.

I'd be surprised if he doesn't get in.
Unlike most Broncos, Sharpe has many advantages. At the time he retired he owned most of the records for tight ends. He was always quotable so most of the press knew who he was. He has a signature play, the Super Bowl touchdown against the Giants, and his media personna keeps him in the attention of the press.

Well we knew that going in
He was kept off the short list for the senior committee along with Floyd Little, also no Louis Wright, but I could go on and on.

I agree that Gradishar is long overdue
but until Floyd Little is in, I don’t think there is any specific Bronco, or any number of Broncos that could make this situation right.
The Franchise has GOT to be in there.

It's a joke that Ray Guy isn't already in the HoF & he doesn't even make the list.
Anyone who watched the SD-IND game knows how important a punter can be, so how can the greatest one ever not be enshrined?

Well we got Zimmerman last year and well get shannon this year...
… so if we keep getting one a year, well finally get justice!
Yes, I'm a Diamondback and Suns fan. So you may be wondering, "Why does this fool like the Broncos so much?"
A: The Cardinals are too hard of a pill to swallow. Oh yeah and that Elway dude....

Sharpe actually may not get in on his first try
There’s actually a reasonably good chance Shannon Sharpe won’t get elected this year, but not because he’s not HoF deserving. He certainly is. But be aware that no TE has ever been elected to the HoF in their first eligible year.
Here’s the breakdown on all TEs in the HoF, which may be surprising — Mike Ditka (2nd try, 12 year eligible), John Mackey (5th try, 15th year eligible), Dave Casper (3rd try, 13th year eligible), Ozzie Newsome (3rd try, 4th year eligible), Jackie Smith (2nd try, 12th year eligible), Kellen Winslow (3rd try, 3rd year eligible), Charlie Sanders (Senior, 1st try, 25th year eligible).
I’m pretty sure he’ll get in, but he may wait a year or more.
