Filling the other position?

Maybe I'm missing something, but I haven't seen or heard much about the Broncos looking for a new GM.  Quote from Bowlen's press conference:

On if he will be looking for a new general manager
"We haven’t gotten to that point yet."

So does that mean he might keep the GM responsibilities for himself?  For the historically ignorant, before Shanny took over GM duties, did the Broncos have a separate GM in place or was Bowlen making the personnel decisions?

Dude

Where have you been. Bowlen said he is going to hire a head coach first. After he has his HC then he will turn his search to a GM.

Check this out

Why would Pat hire a GM who would not be able to get along with the HC? This is a close relationship and MUST work!

Keep in mind that the GM, is NOT as important as the HC.

The thought that persists here

is that the Goodmans and Xanders will all handle the GM duties together. Personally, I think this would be the best scenario.

Thanks to Mike Shanahan, a great coach who will be dearly missed.

Since we have to hire someone, please get a defensive coach Mr. Bowlen.

I like that too

after all, the goodmans are the ones who are TOTALY on top of the Broncos needs in the up and comming draft and that is really all that the new HC needs is a knowledgable team to bounce his desires off of!

count me in

for an in-house gm. that would really help right away, but i don’t know bowlen’s needs in that area, or the new hc’s, either. this may not be a necessary step, and yet it may. was shanny basically running all gm duties this season? i don’t believe so. i know we had a gm in title last season, do we have a current gm on the “roster”? this will be an interesting hire and structure to keep an eye on. hmmm, intriguing.

dc may be the most important position being filled for the 2009 season. we had better have 1/2 a d by opening day next season, or we run the risk of being trampled by the nfc east, afc north, colts and pats. we also need a good draft, i believe that is the goodman’s area. does anyone think bowlen is giving the new hc candidates a few names that must be retained in the organization? who is going to have final say on the gm candidate, is it the hc? is pat bowlen taking over? i need structure!

No way Bowlen takes over

I just can’t see that ever happening. Right now the goodmans jointly make up the GM office, with Xanders occupying a sort of “organizational oversight” role. I don’t think Xanders really handles much in the way of personnel duties, he’s more of an ivory tower or thinktank kind of guy, responsible for looking at the big picture.

I am sure Goodman and co. will be retained (including his entire scouting staff) though there may be some shakeup in the pro-personnell scouting area (2 or 3 guys) in an effort to boost our free agent valuations.

I think it will be Bowlen’s decision, based on input from the HC, about what to do about a GM, but I lean towards keeping Goodman there. If they bring someone in, it will be someone with Pioli’s history of good free agent acquisitions, since the Goodmans have the draft well in hand, IMO.

all front office people will be retained

I could dig this up but you’ll have to trust me for the meanwhile; it was already reported and I believe it came from Bowlen.

What’s odd is his comment about waiting after finding a HC to find a GM, since this implies he didn’t have that prospective GM in house already. Maybe he meant he wouldn’t make the decision until selecting a HC, although he may be intent on adding an actual GM while still retaining Xanders, Goodman & Goodman in the roles they currently occupy.

I suspect that whatever the final arrangement will be Bowlen will want to maintain a more active role in team management. He gave away a lot to Shanahan and may not want to get left out (relatively speaking) of the decision making process again, and/or he may want to create two power bases with himself as the intermediary between the the HC and GM, or something along these lines. I don’t expect another Jerry Jones but I think Bowlen has learned something about the danger of consolidating too much power under one hat.

I agree

that Bowlen will retain more control over everything. He’s been with the Broncos for a quarter century, and I’m sure he’s learned a lot (partly not to give too much control to one person), but also a lot about football in general.

Xanders

I became curious when I read this from styg:

I don’t think Xanders really handles much in the way of personnel duties, he’s more of an ivory tower or thinktank kind of guy, responsible for looking at the big picture

Curiosity aroused, I got this from denverbroncos.com:

Xanders will serve as a contributor in player personnel, salary cap management, contract negotiations and football operations for the Broncos. He will assist with strategic planning, player evaluations and acquisition execution with regards to pro personnel and evaluate assigned positions of need for the NFL Draft.
The 37-year-old also is responsible for the long and short-term strategic planning of the Broncos’ salary cap and cash management.

So, yes, there is the ‘thinktank’ part of things, but what I’m getting is that Xanders works with the Goodmans on personnel issues: his specific piece of the puzzle is to keep us out of cap trouble, help negociate contracts, help decide who is worth keeping and also what holes will be filled, whether via draft or FA. Once those decisions are made, he is responsible for overseeing or directly negociating the contracts and/or the trades.

We don’t talk much about him, but it’s my belief that in order to put together another SB run, he’s going to be a key piece of the puzzle. The intricacies of the cap and financial contracts have astounded and confused most of us, and in this age of football he’s probably going to be essential. This is a short background, same source:

Xanders worked with the Falcons in a variety of capacities, including player personnel, coaching, salary cap management, information technology and business management. He was a member of Falcons’ coaching staff on their 1998 team that became the first in franchise history to earn a Super Bowl berth (XXXIII).

Selected by the Falcons to attend the NFL’s 2005 Stanford Graduate School of Business Program on Management, Xanders has given speeches at multiple universities on labor economics, football administration and player personnel issues.

A former middle linebacker who played for Bobby Bowden at Florida State University, Xanders was a member of four bowl-winning teams with the Seminoles that had a 42-7 combined record. He was an All-Atlantic Coast Conference academic team selection and graduated from FSU with a bachelor’s degree in business management along with a master’s degree in business administration.

Thank goodness we have him, and I hope he does it well.

Critcal guy...

He doesn’t get much PR, but I think Xanders may be one of the key people in any SB run. One of the issues the Broncos have struggled with over the last decade has been recurring cap issues that have prevented them from retaining good, but not great players. Bert Berry, Heyward, Pryce, Anderson, were all let go do to cap issues. Then we had the rediculous Ian Gold thing. First we let him go for cap reasons, then we bring him back when he doesn’t work for Tampa (we’ve had more head scratching personnel decisions…)

Strategically planning cap issues has become huge and is one reason why the Patriots continue to be successful, Pittsburg too.

Broncobear nailed the (maybe)most important job on the Broncos.

I think

that Pat and his new HC will look at the different GM possibilities and “Agree” to agree on one that they both can work with. I beleive that Pat has seen enough of the Front office "Power struggle’ sort of thing, and just wants everyone to work well together.

Thanks for the replies.

It’s so backwards from baseball…when the Mariners sh!t-canned their entire front office and coaching staff, the GM came first and then he helped pick the manager; but the NFL, and specific team situations, are definitely different.

And, yeah, Bowlen did say in the same press conference that he would pick the HC first, so I guess I could have left it at that. But the fact that there hasn’t even been any speculation among the fans kind of surprised me!

I was a Mariner's fan until they unloaded the Skipper

I’m not a huge baseball fan by any measure, but I was just starting to watch and enjoy and I was learning more about the game every day… and then for reasons I couldn’t comprehend they turned everything upside down.

Every so often i check back in on them, and just when I am starting to enjoy some of the talent they have brought in, they unload those guys to… I just don’t get it.

You should tune in next season.

The Ms are in much better shape with the new GM Zduriencik. Bavasi made no end of ridiculous moves that crippled the future of the franchise.

Anyway, they should be better in ’09 than ’08, although how much better has a lot of variables. Okay, end thread drift.

this is what i was looking for

from the denver post: "The Broncos’ new head coach will be encouraged to keep six assistant coaches left over from Shanahan’s staff. According to two NFL sources, the Broncos have sent termination notices to the league office for all assistants except Dennison, Jeremy Bates (quarterbacks), Jedd Fisch (receivers), Bobby Turner (running backs), Bill Johnson (defensive line) and Rich Tuten (strength and conditioning). "

johnson seems an odd choice here, maybe bowlen likes him, but the rest staying would be great, no?

Tuten?

Isnt strength and conditioning part of the injury problem?

I'm a little mystified by Tuten as well.

Maybe he can be convinced to bring in a Yoga instructor or somebody with experience on stretching?

I'm puzzled on this one as well

Bowlen seems to be high on this guy, as are the players. From a statistical viewpoint, I’d love to see our injury picture against that of some other teams, and a specific reference to the number of hamstring and groin injuries. A lot are preventable, and we’re not doing well at that.

I agree with you guys...Tuten what gives?...that sled or machine thing must weaken the groin and hamstring area

Sometime during the Cards/Panthers game

it was mentioned that Detroit had the most starters out with injury last year.

They also said that Carolina had like 5 people on IR and Arizona had 3. Combined that’s just one more than we had RBs on IR!

Reading between the lines...

I’m not sure Bowlin will hire a GM. At the presser he said something about looking at different organizational structures. It sounds to me like he may settle for a GM by committee. That kind of makes sense. Let everyone focus on their areas of expertise, then reach a consensus on direction with Bowlin arbitrating.

by SlowWhiteGuy on Jan 8, 2009 11:14 AM MST reply actions   0 recs

there was something on that

As I recall, Bowlen said something about wanting to return to the “old’ way of making decision, or something to that effect, meaning a more committee/consensus process. Sounds like Shanahan’s influence on the organization was to erode prior arrangements as time went along — IMO. I don’t dislike Shanahan but I’m getting the impression that he was an "iron fist inside a velvet glove” sort, and maybe not all that velvety. Strong willed types have a way of getting their way, which means even when they’re wrong. Alternative voices in the organization withered over time.

Great comment and rec'd. I completely agree...
