Straight from the Horse's Mouth -- Jason Garrett Scouting Report
Our closer look at each of the Broncos Head Coaching Candidates continues with a closer look at Jason Garrett, Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator. To help us with that, I reached out to Dave Halprin who runs Blogging the Boys, the best of the best in terms of Cowboys blogs. Here is what he had to say about Garret --
There's a lot of controversy over Jason Garrett right now among the Cowboys faithful. Last year our offense was a juggernaut and he was widely-praised as a 'genius' and the head-coach-in-waiting. This year, the offense wasn't as good and some started to question his play-calling and in-season adjustments. Defenses were starting to recognize plays from our formations and were calling them out ahead of time and DB's were running routes with our receivers. He's a young coach so I expect he will make the proper adjustments this offseason to freshen things up and confuse defenses a little more.
As a coach, he's very good when talking to the media and you get the sense that he knows what he wants to do and is a very smart guy. Listening to him talk he sounds like a head coach.
He runs the timing offense that he learned under Norv Turner when Garrett was the backup QB for the Cowboys in the 90's and Turner was the OC. It's a vertical passing game backed by a power running game. This would be a change for you guys because you generally like to have big maulers on the offensive line instead of the athletic zone-blocking scheme you're used to. The passing scheme is a deep read, then intermediate and short-read system that values getting the ball downfield. Personally, I think he tended to get pass-happy on occasion and benfitted from Tony Sparano's run-first mentality when they shared the play-calling duties in 2007. He has no real say in our defense with Wade Phillips here so I don't know what he would do on that side of the ball.
Overall, I think he's a very good coach with a potentially great future. He's smart, he's not overly-emotional and he knows what he wants to do. He's still young and learning though and he did make some mistakes in 2008. I hope you guys don't hire him because I want him back as our OC in 2009.
Our thanks to Dave and everyone at Blogging the Boys. Lord knows they have their hands full with the circus in Dallas.

My vote is..
..Rick Dennison. Much more esperienced than Garrett or McDaniels, and smarter.

Though I voted for
McDaniels in the poll——I agree with you bradley, Dennison has experience in Special teams, played
Defence, and as OC, has will rounded game experience.
A better choice

Not to mention
that he is now the guru of the ZB-one cut offense. I think it’s safe to say that he has passed Alex Gibbs in this area.

I don't know if he's passed Gibbs...
But the work he did this year especially with Clady, Harris & Kuper, turned a unit we were all concerend with into possibly the strongest part of the whole team. He certainly is an O-line guru and not just of the zone-block, but pass blocking as well. By next year this could easily be the best O-line in the league and one of the best in history.

Gibbs
Don’t get me wrong, I love the guy, but he’s a head case. Dennison took over the O line coaching because Gibbs had to take a year off (he flew back to Denver now and then to help out). I read recently that he had problems in Houston, and is taking a month or two for R&R. I’d take Dennison over Gibbs.

Agreed...
I think Dennison is a better candidate then either of these guys. We already have our yound offensive genius in Bates and Dennison is a more rounded candidate.
However, of the two I think McDaniels would be more comfortable with our current offensive system than Garrett.

Dennison is THE MAN, and Bobby Turner is THE MAN, but Bates can climb a tree for all I care.

If Dennison gets promoted
I wonder if Tom Nalen would be interested in a line coach job.
