The Final Seven
As if we needed another HC fanpost...it appears the Broncos organization is inching closer to appointing an heir to replace Shanahan. Here are the big take-aways from the Denver Post article.
Bowlen is superstious and will go with 7 candidates. No Stoops (thank baby Jesus!)
The Broncos' next head coach will come from one of the seven identified candidates, according to the source. The six who have been interviewed, in order of appearance before the Broncos' search committee, were New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, Tampa Bay defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, Broncos offensive coordinator Rick Dennison, Dallas offensive coordinator Jason Garrett and Minnesota defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, who was at the team's Dove Valley headquarters Wednesday.
Bowlen may have tipped his hand and we may be ushering in the Spags/Morris/Fraiser era...
The Broncos' new head coach will be encouraged to keep six assistant coaches left over from Shanahan's staff. According to two NFL sources, the Broncos have sent termination notices to the league office for all assistants except Dennison, Jeremy Bates (quarterbacks), Jedd Fisch (receivers), Bobby Turner (running backs), Bill Johnson (defensive line) and Rich Tuten (strength and conditioning).
Bowlen and his gang of merry men will be eating a lot of doughnuts and coffee over the next few days as they try and make the right hiring decision. I for one think the Magic 8 Ball will be working overtime.
The search committee will spend the next two or three days thoroughly discussing each candidate. By Monday, the committee will bring back one to three finalists for a second interview or present an offer to the top choice.
Well, I think we're all looking forward to next Monday when we can all celebrate or bemoan our new head coach.

I got too Hi Ho! with the 7 dwarfs!
Do you see the decision of Bowlen to persuade the incoming coach to keep a lot of the offensive coaches as a sign that he’s leaning toward one of the D-coord and not McDaniels or Garrett (Dennison wouldn’t be an issue).
I wish Woody Paige was our coach!

Ya know...
I don’t think it is anything more than Bowlen taking a “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it” approach. He knows he has a solid offensive staff in place, and the more experience the better for a young head coach regardless of which side of the ball they focus on.
No matter who the coach is, they will benefit(and so will the players) from having some familiarity and stability on the side of the ball that isn’t going to change that much over the next 5-10 years.

I agree...
at the same time, the key offensive staff staying on does tend to reduce the added value of the “Offensive” candidates relative to the “Defensive” ones. The more I think about this selection the more I believe that the new DC may be more important than the HC. We have a great offensive system and players in place (minus one or two cogs); we have a great personnel group in the Goodmans/Xander (at least it seems that way). What we are sorely lacking is a sound defensive system and the players to run it.

What about Mike Shanahan,
I heard he’s available . . . oh yeah. This whole thing sucks – any of these seven dudes is a complete downgrade from shanahan.

One surprise
is Tuten. With our injury record the last couple of years I would think we would want to take a hard look at strength and conditioning. We should own the fourth quarter, particularly at home.

I was thinking the same thing.
Didn’t we talk about this in a thread a few weeks ago? Tuten is a demon on conditioning but maybe he needs to take a close look at his scheme to see if that process isn’t what’s leading to all these injuries.

At least hire a new left groin trainer.
Thanks to Mike Shanahan, a great coach who will be dearly missed.
Since we have to hire someone, please get a defensive coach Mr. Bowlen.
Hillis for starter next year. He wears special thigh pads so his solid brass balls don't give him repeated thigh contusions.

Well
I might be able to get 2 of them.
Sleepy=Rich Tuten
Dopey=Bill Johnson

You're on.
Doc- Rick Dennison. As the leader of the offensive line, which isn’t allowed to say anything to anyone, I’ve always had a sneaking suspicion that Dennison is some kind of witch doctor.
Grumpy- Raheem Morris. He’s angry on the sidelines, and he likes to light fires under his players’ collective asses. A real fireball.
Happy- Josh McDaniels. He seems like a happy guy to me. And he must be happy to have Randy Moss and an O that any QB could fit into. But he’s most happy about being the leader in the clubhouse for the Broncos’ HC job. Who wouldn’t want to be the Broncos HC?
Sleepy-Leslie Frazier. The sleeper candidate that may just surprise us all. Just like Sleepy did in the movie when… well, OK, Sleepy never really did anything at all. So it’s a play on words. So what?
Bashful- Steve Spagnuolo. A very religious man, Spags doesn’t fit in with the bling-bling $100,000 crowd. Leads a humble family in New England.
Sneezy- That guy from the Dolphins. What, I’m supposed to pick someone to be Sneezy? I guess that Dolphins guy sneezes. I’d rather have Bill Cowher here. As in, every time I see Bill Cowher in slow motion yelling with his chin flopping around, I laugh so hard I sneeze and liquids fly all out my nose.
Dopey- Jason Garrett. How do you fail with an offense that has TO, Roy Williams, Marion Barber, Felix Jones, Flozell Adams, Jason Witten, Andre Gurode, Patrick Crayton, and some other guy I know I’m forgetting? I considered him for Happy, as in “I’m just happy that people are talking to me,” but that didn’t quite work…
"WTF" By Zappa. 1/5/09
I can deal with bears....sharks on the other hand.......of course, I am not talking about if I were menstrual(I’m a guy so that isn’t it), but yeah. I can deal with bears if my arm or something was bleedin’, but sharks? I’ll pass on those. The worst feeling in the world is to be out in the surf and feel something very large brush up against your leg as you were alone waiting for your next wave. I don’t think I’ve gone out past waist deep in the ocean since. lol It was probably just a damn dolphin or something, but yeah. Screw sharks and the evolutionary train they rode in on!

you didn’t include Romo as part of the offense that he failed with.

Johnson and Tuten?
What sucked more our D-line or the fact no one could play a week without injuring a hammy, sorry but Tuten needs to hit the bricks, for years the Broncos seem to get ravaged by injuries and wear down through the season, I want Baltimore’s gyuy, whoever that is, he keeps old farts like Ray Lewis and Trevor Pryce on the field and mostly injury free.

And while I'm here,
I’m confused. Aren’t there some rules about hiring coaches still involved in the playoffs?

If that was true...
…and Bowlen decided to offer the job to Spags, we could still have quite a wait ahead of us.

He could be named HC, but he wouldn't take over until after the Giants play their last game
Similar to the year the Browns hired Crennel and Weis was hired by Norte Dame. Had to wait until after the Super Bowl to assume their duties, also I think February 2 would be the end of those guys contracts, so may have to wait for things to be offical since all the canidates have jobs.

Not sure what the exact rules are
I know there are restrictions on when you can do interviews. If Denver cut the list and wanted to have second interviews with a couple people, they would not be able to talk with Spags until the Giants lose (or maybe the week after the conference championships). But I don’t know if they can straight out make him an offer.
I really can’t see why any team is allowed to interview candidates and hire coaches until the end of the NFL year (Super Bowl or Pro Bowl or whatever the offical date is). Sure you can talk to coaches on your team for post-season evaluations. And obviously you can fire them. Obviously, it is better for a team to have a coach (and a direction) but it is not something so crucial that the extra month would be a killer. (In fact you could argue that it would even the playing field. Right now good teams without coaches can afford to wait for the coaches from playoff teams to become available while bad teams are more prone to hire quickly so they have a direction and can placate the fan base by showing they are trying to make progress) If the NFL created this moratorium, it would keep the focus on the playoffs and it would help remove unneeded distractions from the playoff teams.

They can make the offer I think
wasn’t Kubs named the new head coach in houston before we played in the AFCCG?
Nevermind. I asked google and he said that the offer wasn’t official until an hour after the game.

Fun post dude...really! NO way Morris/Frazier come as 2nd fiddles. They already have that job!
But I like the your creative genious at work…It’s outside the box. We could use more for sure. I just want a coach that knows there’s a D in defense. Our offense WILL rock for sure!

I believe
Our offense WILL rock for sure!
If we improve our play selection, particularly in the red zone, and use our slot reciever and tight ends more effectively! And who was responsible for play selection this year? None other than our resident boy genious Bates.

Agreed, firstfan
We all had problems with the play calling, and a lot of those problems were legit. It’s fine to run certain plays to set up indecision in the defense later in the game, but ‘trickification’ gets you nowhere if you can’t whack the D in the mouth on the next play. Our offense was, IMHO, 1 dimensional before the injuries really piled up. Pittman gave us some good runs, but we didn’t have a solid run game early.
In part, sure, that was due to a O line getting to know each other, but the choice of plays also became predictable. We have needed adjustments on both O and D, and I didn’t think Bates was there. I credited it to youth, and I’m not sure that isn’t it. Hopefully, our new OC will give us a steading hand.
