New Head Coach Would Be Wise To Leave Broncos Offense Alone

610x_mediumvia cache.daylife.com

I don't claim to be a genius, nor do I play one on television.  My thoughts on the coaching search and what I think the Broncos should do are not likely to be eye opening, nor surprise anyone.  I do feel the need to get it down on 'paper' so that when it all does finally come down you'll all remember where I stood.

Word came out that the Broncos are going to 'urge' the new Head Coach to keep 6 existing assistant coaches from the current staff.  This is not entirely a financial decision since all the Broncos assistants were under contract for 2009 and most have been shown the door.  What it is, however, is wise thinking by Pat Bowlen, and whoever does finally win the Broncos sweepstakes would be wise to take Bowlen's urging under advisement.

With it being rumored that the Broncos are high on Josh McDaniels/Jason Garrett, many have thought that Jeremy Bates and his offensive coaching counterparts might be in trouble.  Why wouldn't a new Head Coach want to bring in his own guys to handle the side of the ball he feels most comfortable with?  Seems logical.   I wrote the day before Mike Shanahan was fired that stability was needed at Dove Valley.  Keeping the offensive coaches in-tact is vital, in my opinion, to the continued maturation of Jay Cutler and the young offense he commands.  Doing something else could mean a step backward.

There are two excellent examples in the NFL right now of teams that brought in new head coaches that kept the coaching staffs in tact despite their backgorunds being on that side of the ball.  In one case, the existing system was completely different from the one the new coach had ran previously.  Both teams were dominant on that side of the ball and remain so today, mostly because the new head coach didn't make a knee-jerk decision to clean house.  The Result?  Both teams are still playing.

Star-divide

Let's start in Baltimore, where John Harbaugh was hired last winter to take over the Ravens.  Harbaugh was a defensive assistant at every level, and while he spent many of his NFL coaching years as a Special Teams coach, his final year was spent as a defensive backs coach in Philadelphia.  When Harbaugh was hired he had a decision to make.  The Ravens had a dominant defense already led by Rex Ryan.

The Ravens, however, don't run the same scheme employed by DC Jim Johnson in Philly.  Harbaugh could have easily cleaned house, brought in some Philadelphia assistants and did things his way.  Wisely he understood what he had in Ryan, and more importantly, in the players he had on the Ravens defense.  They played hard for Ryan, they responded to him.  What mess with that?

Harbaugh kept Ryan and the hired a strong offensive mind(Cam Cameron) to run his offense.  Being a Special Teams/Defense specialist Harbaugh was wise to do so, especially with a rookie quarterback coming into the fold.  By keeping stability on defense, and bringing in experience to run the offense, Harbaugh could set out to do what a Head Coach needs to do with a losing team, change the culture.

The proof is in the results as the Ravens went 11-5 and will play in Tennessee this weekend and one of the Top 5 defenses in football.

Example #2 comes from the Steel City.  After Bill Cowher stepped down, the Steelers made a bold hire when they introduced Mike Tomlin as their Head Coach.  There was alot of noise made about the Steelers going outside the 'family', overlooking candidates like Russ Grimm and Ken Whisenhunt.  Another concern was the defense Tomlin ran as defensive coordinator with the Minnesota Vikings.  Playing from a traditional 4-3 front, with the Tampa-2 behind, Tomlin did nearly the exact opposite as the incumbant DC in Pittsburgh, Dick LaBeau.

Tomlin, like Harbaugh, was wise, however, in his analysis of the Steelers.  He knew that Cowher had built a team that could win despite rarely spending large amounts of money on free agents because the Steelers ran a system on defense that focused more on a type of athlete, not super stars.  To change that system would likely mean a long period of growing pains as personnel on the defensive side of the ball was overhauled to play the system Tomlin was used to.

In the end, Tomlin kept LaBeau and set forth on his quest to be the coach the Steelers needed him to be, a great motivator.  Tomlin has the fire and charisma that his predecessor had.  A cocky/confidence that makes players want to play for him.  To play hard for him becuase he had the self-assuredness to come into a new situation and not immediately try and put his stamp on it.  Let the men that had helped Pittsburgh be successful continue to make Pittsburgh successful.

The result?  The Steelers are playing this weekend and have the best defense in football.

The Broncos are not unlike Baltimore or Pittsburgh.  Neither the Ravens or Steelers were a playoff team before their new coaches toook over, yet the new coaches were smart enough to realize what they had on the defensive side of the ball, left it intact, and got busy working on what needed to be fixed instead of what they felt comfortable doing.

The job of Head Coach is so much more than game planning, or offense, or defense.  It is about delegating.  It is about motivating.  It is about leading 53 men, most who will never have to work a day in their lives, to run into a brick wall 60 times every Sunday.  Most importantly, it is about having the confidence to come into a situation, realize that despite change there are things that currently work, and leaving them the hell alone.

It takes someone special to do that.  John Harbaugh did it.  Mike Tomlin did it.  The Denver Broncos offense was one of the best in football last year, without the stability of a running game.  Whomevere is lucky enough to take over that offense needs to do it too, and get to work on fixing the attitude, culture and defense of the Denver Broncos.

I voted NO...

but I want them to hire someone who will keep most, if not all of the staff. I’d like to see Dennison & Turner remain. But ultimately, it has to be the HC’s decision.

Totally agree, NYC

The Broncos had waaay to many yards to only put up 370 points. All is not okay on the offensive side of the ball. I want to keep, in order these guys:

1) Rick Dennison
2) Bobby Turner
3) Jeremy Bates

Otherwise, I honestly think change is good. As Broncos fans, we need to put the “glory days” to rest. We were very good in the late 90’s and since, have been pretty average. That’s not good enough in Pat Bowlen’s eyes or my eyes.

my list runs the same...

Anyone who thinks McDaniels would come in here and run the offense into the ground is crazy. Mike Shanahan may be a brilliant coach and an offensive genius, perhaps the best of our generation. However, that does not mean he is the ONLY offensive genius. I’m sorry, but the season McDaniels extracted out of Matt Cassel (WHO?!?!?!) was beyond remarkable. How many of you, after Brady’s injury and after Cassel’s first couple of starts thought to yourselves “Yeah, the Pats won’t skip a beat, and I won’t be surprised if they win 11 games with their OFFENSE.” I’d like a show of hands. Now, that does not include folks who thought “well, Cassel just has to not screw up, and the defense and coaching will get them into the playoffs.”

My point is this…give the kid some benefit of the doubt. I’m guessing he’s not an idiot. He’s 32 years old, I don’t foresee him coming in and blowing up the offense. More realistically, I imagine a tweak here and there, NO MORE BUBBLE SCREENS and hopefully a reappearance of the designed rollouts of yore?

The 2008 Pats offense

was still MORE EFFECTIVE than Denver’s this season. That’s a beat up O-line, no running back, Moss and Welker, and Matt Cassell versus the best O-line in the league, Jay Cutler, Royal, Marshall, Scheffler, and no running back. Also, keep in mind that NE had to go up against Miami, New York, and Buffalo twice each. Denver had San Diego twice, and the Oakland/KC contests were utterly winnable, although denver came out of the season with losses to two of the worst teams in the league. Denver was closer to a 6-10 team than a 10-6 team if you ask me. We got the Saints and Chargers games handed to us and Denver had an awfully tough time getting out of Cleveland with a win in Quinn’s FIRST START! Yikes.

The Pats gained almost 500 yards LESS than Denver in 2008 but scored 40 more points. WOW!

Yep, Denver needs a great Defensive scheme and motivator, but that guy doesn’t HAVE to be the head coach.

EXACTLY

not only does he not have to be the HC, but it’s better if he’s not the HC so that he can devote his time accordingly, while the DC can just do his thing without any meddling. Someone like Dom Capers….
I’m thrilled to see that both McDaniels and Garrett would bring Capers with them.

And I forgot…great post as usual, Guru!

that's more a reflection...

on their defense than their offense. NE had the 2nd best average starting field position in the league. It’s easier to score points when you start 10 yards farther down the field. However, perhaps McDaniel has a grasp on this and realizes how important defense is to offensive production.

Wow. That's great insight.

But, wasn’t Cassel a product of the Football Factory at USC? A backup there could probably have started at almost any other school, right? Or was he in college when USC was rebuilding?

Obviously he has the ability...

But no matter how much talent the guy has, the point is that he did not play in college. He didn’t start a game in college, nor had he in the NFL before this season. It doesn’t matter how good he was supposed to be, the fact that he did what he did in the NFL this season after not starting a football game as the QB since high school is nothing short of remarkable.

AGREED

The HC should be able to evaluate his staff and make his own choices, that doesn’t mean he will clean house but it should be his choice.

Great Article Johnny

There is a lot of good thought and information. Thank you. Most agree we have an explosive offense. I think the new guy, whomever it might be, will still need to address some ofensive issues. Specifically, red zone production, O Line depth and aging and better utilization of slot reciever and Tight Ends.

Hire the best leader/motivator

All the candidates are good choices and I no longer have a “favorite”. Hiring an offensive mind like McDaniels or Garrett would add fresh tweaks to the good offense that is already in place. Hiring an innovative defensive mind is very attractive, but as others have mentioned, he is the head coach not the defensive coordinator. So for whoever gets named the head coach, his first (and perhaps most important) decision will be who he hires as DC. In that respect, someone like Leslie Frazier (or Spags) has an advantage over Raheem Morris because Frazier can probably bring a quality assistant to implement his scheme as the new DC.

So I end up reaching the conclusion in my title. Pick the guy who you think will be able to be the most effective leader of the team. Someone who can bring discipline, teamwork and enthusiam to the entire team = as Tomlin did in Pittsburgh. I think one of the reasons that Shanahan lost his job was that he “lost” the team. Not in the sense that they did not respect him or want to play and win for him. More that he was just not as effective in motivating the team and bringing a sense of urgency. I think it was a matter of staleness and not anything specific that Shanahan did (and I don’t blame him for it)

I can, but that's because I watch them haha

I don’t think he’ll be on the market though. He’s getting old and Philly is treating him very well. Heck, the Eagles made the playoffs this year even when most people thought they were out of it. I don’t think he’ll leave to go rebuild a defense. I don’t know if he wants to do that. I think he’s happy where he is and with the reputation he’s built in Philadelphia.

by phantom818 on Jan 8, 2009 3:17 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

You are most likely right

But I hope he looks at Denver as a win-win challenge and he decides to come here for a few years to rebuild both the defense and the defensive coaching staff.

If he succeeds he increases his legacy. If he fails, well it was the Denver D which has been a mystery to many defensive coordinators, so it won’t really tarnish him.

I just don't trust Garrett

I don’t think he brings anything MORE to the table than Jeremy Bates could as HC. Garrett didn’t impress me at all this year and he had a FAR better cast of characters on offense than almost any other OC.

It seemed like as the season wore on, everybody caught up with the Dallas offense. Sound familiar? It should, everybody catches up with Denver’s offense by week 7 every year too.

Denver hasn’t had a dynamic offense for 17 weeks since 1998.

Even in 2005, Denver’s offense was one dimensional, but on the running side. Plummer averaged 201 yard/game and 1 TD/game. Denver’s running game picked up 25 rushing TDs and ran for over 2500 yards. Wow!

In 2008, the offense was the opposite of dynamic. All we could do is pass. We did it extremely well, but that was it.

I am not a huge fan of Garrett

He is my “ideal” candidate only in the sense that he and McDaniels are the only two HC’s that might allow Jim Johnson to come in as DC. Well, Dennison might, but I would like the added bonus of getting a fresh perspective of some sort to the offense.

I wonder how successful Garrett could have been in Dallas this year with Jerr Jones doing his best Al Davis impersonation. FWIW – Montrae Holland said Garrett did a good job maintaining authority over all those egos.

Nice post, MattR

I can tell it’s your post before I get to your name because they often echo my thoughts exactly.

Anyway, here’s my 2 cents.

Hiring an offensive mind like McDaniels or Garrett would add fresh tweaks to the good offense that is already in place.

I haven’t had access to post for awhile but I wanted to post that under JohnnyB’s question about keeping the O staff in place. Imagine Bates, Dennison and Cutler putting their heads together with a guy like McDaniels. We already know they studied the Patriots offense this past reloading season. We’re talking some mad scientist type plays.

Also, your point about the DC is spot on. Assuming the rumors are true and McDaniels or Garrett would bring in Capers, this could pay off for a long time. Obviously, the trend in the NFL today is to go with the young guy for HC. That is why you will never see Jim Johnson, despite his success, become a HC. The same could some day be said about Capers. He’s already older than what teams are looking for in a HC. This means that even if he has great success as the Broncos DC, he likely wouldn’t be lured away to become someone’s HC. Clearly, Capers already has been an innovative DC (Pittsburg) and has had some success as a HC (Took Car to NFC Champ game in 96). Add to that his chance to learn from Belichek, who runs a different style 3-4 than his, and I’m sure he’s got some new twists in mind already.

As for your point about the HC as motivator, I also agree with that. After racking my brain as to why would Bowlen fire Shanahan now, this is one of the conclusions I came to. He had his obvious shortfalls as GM, but appeared in the past few seasons to be turning that around. But there have been too many times in the past few years that the Broncos show up flat on game day, particularly when playing a team they are “supposed” to beat. I think Bowlen wants a guy who is going to have his team jacked and ready every week.

Anyway, I voted for McDaniels. As I said above, the thought of him with our current O staff is too much to pass on.

Or so I'm told.

I hate to bring this up but it's been on my mind for a while. My friends who unfortunately aren't Broncos fans...

tell me that Jay Cutler is going to be as bad as Jamarcus Russell next year. I know that that will never happen but I can’t get over what they said. One more thing, would everyone here vote for Jay Cutler for the Pro Bowl instead of Phyllis Cry Me A Rivers…I know I would vote for Jay…but my friends keep telling me that Phyllis is a snub and that Jay doesn’t deserve the Pro Bowl. They get on my nerves so much sometimes. Thank goodness I have found this website!!!! :)

Not a complete answer

But this fanpost might help a bit. Cutler carried a one dimensional offense fot the second half of the season.

by MattR on Jan 8, 2009 3:40 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

All I got to say is that Jay Cutler does deserve to be there and BRETT FAVRE DOES NOT.

I also think Phyllis was a snub…for all his egocentric stupidity, he had a pretty darn good year. Though I would say Jay Cutler did for more with far less than Mr. Rivers. As for your friends…they don’t know what they are talking about. Anyone who watches Cutler sees what kind of QB he is and will become. Cutler examines the field and makes decisions. JaMarcus examines the sidelines and has decisions made for him. Two different QBs, one is a NFL caliber quarterback and the other is a bust. You decide which is which.

This is my GAP, there are many like it but this one is mine. Without my GAP I am useless, without me, they will run through my GAP. I will protect my GAP and have my brothers back on his. I will not be moved from my GAP, I am a crazed dog that patrols this area and will defeat all who entire it. I own this GAP, it is mine. I bought it with blood and sweat. I will not be pushed. I will not be moved. This Sunday I will make a stand and a statement.

Don’t take this teh wrong way, but your friends are morons.

JK.

Look, they must be effing with you because they know it upsets you. Don’t show them a sign of weakness. Just let Cutler do the talking in 2009. The pro bowl is worthless. Players make it just because they are popular, not because they’re good. Phil had a spectacular year and is a gamer, but he also has the best (when healthy) running back lining up behind him every snap. Denver lines up Tatum “Taco” Bell with a staright face. That’s not even close to even.

Much more goes into a comparison than that, but your retort should be “I’m not even going to acknowledge that comment, that’s rediculous and you know it” when somebody puts Cutler in the same sentence with JaBarcus the Hutt.

Phyllis got snubbed, he had a great year, but Cutler deserved to be in the pro bowl though too.

That was money…Jabarcus!? nice nice nice

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

I saw on the NFL network that mike nolan was headed to green bay

to talk to an old coaching friend . If he dont take any positions there do you think the
broncos should give him a call to be a perspective cantidate.

draft picks

i saw that we get 9 draft picks with one in each round and an additional in the 5th and 7th for foxworth and colbert. Do we not get an extra pick for the lineman we sent to dallas during training camp?

I believe that was for a pick...

in the 2010 Draft

I don't know, but

I think that we get a higher pick from Atlanta if Foxworth resigns with them this offseason.

Past Bronco coaches

I was thinking about when Mike Shanahan became coach in 1995. He inherited a porous 3-4 defense from a HC (Wade Phillips) who had been the DC for several years under Dan Reeves. One of the first things that Shanahan did was to switch to a 4-3 and bring in a couple of Browns named Michael Dean Perry and James Jones for the interior of the DL. He continued to work on the defense with the addition (steal) of Smith and Traylor from the Chiefs in ‘97. He was an offensive minded coach who had a good offense already – I think that he needed to upgrade the RB position as Rod Bernstein was injury prone. Should McDaniel become HC, I wouldn’t be surprised that he hire a defense technician like Crennel or Capers to overhaul the defense…and to leave the offense alone except to fix the RB situation. I love the emphasis on bigger RB with quick foot speed who can break tackles.

Great post, JohnnyB

Solid reasoning here. I don’t think it’s too much to assume that this has been a major part of the discussions with these candidates. And your examples of Tomlin and Harbaugh are totally applicable.

Or so I'm told.

by MN Bronco on Jan 8, 2009 8:21 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

He should bring in whoever he wants.

You cannot run an offense effectively if you have a coaching staff sending mixed messages. If a head coach is going to take an active role in the offense, which is likely with an offense minded coach like a McDaniels, he needs to be coordinated with his staff. I don’t think it would be all that difficult for him and the current coaches to come to terms on an offensive philosophy, both seem to be fond of the pass, it’s not like you’d be trying to get June Jones and Marty Schottenheimer to come to terms. Still, if your offensive or defensive coordinator are clashing with the head coach, the results are disastrous. Case in point, Auburns offense under Tony Franklin and Michigan’s defense under Scott Shafer.
