Come on!

I’m the only one voting Leslie Frazier so far? Vote vote vote! Pretend he is Obama(if democrat) or McCain(if Republican or Chuck Baldwin(if you are a freedom loving constitution loving patriot). lol Yeah. Just vote Frazier baby!

Raheem Morris gets my vote.

I like a young energetic coach who the players will want to play for…he will make Denver a better defensive team and he just seems to have it. The other men are all fine coaches indeed but Mr. Morris gets my nod.

I admire your opinion,

and I don’t know any better. But how can you say this without the guy having ever even been an NFL coordinator? HC seems to be more of a people-management, educate-and-empower position. Effective COACHES make good staff, but effective COORDINATORS and LEADERS seem to make good HC’s. I’m interested in your take on Morris’ (lack of?) experience.

It not like

1 year of DC experience is going to make a huge difference. All the things you point out do not really matter if the coach knows football, is a good motivator and a good leader. Also the coach has to be respected by his players. From all that I have heard and read Raheem Morris has all those qualities. So experience does not really matter, plus its not like he has only been coaching like 1 year

by gnarlybroncodude on Jan 8, 2009 7:59 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

I'm not saying

being a coordinator is a necessary prerequisite for HC. I’m saying I haven’t seen Morris in a position where he is coaching COACHES as well as players. Someone who has only dealt directly with players might tend to micromanage and not empower or trust his coaching staff.

And Slowik was respected by his players, too. (Shudder).

Of course, this is wild speculation. I don’t know the guy (Morris). And I hope he is great, especially if he is hired in Denver.

I can’t really say other than it’s just a gut feeling. Living a few hours of Tampa, I have just heard really good things about him. But I agree, I don’t really know at all.

Dennison

got my vote. I like Spagnuolo also, but why not Dennison? Colorado native, Bronco since 1982; experience as ST coach, and O line coach and O assistant coach. Heckuva linebacker from 82 to 90, at least for a slow white guy, and he was also a heckuva special teams player. He’s got more experience than any of the others, and we’d keep the offense intact, especially the zone block system. Master’s degree says he’s real smart. He would be a keeper, not someone who might use the job as a stepping stone to someplace he’d prefer.

I approve bradley’s message

I voted for Daniels

because I think he is smart enough to leave the offense pretty much alone and hire a damn good DC to deal with our weaknesses there. That being said, bradley’s arguement is strong and I can easily throw in with bradley and wyoeng.

Same here

I think McDaniels is the future at this point…not that others won’t work, but IMMHO he is the best choice.

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

I voted for Dennison's Denizens also

but I’m REALLY glad I’m not the one having to make this decision. If Bowlen fired Shanahan in order to go in a “new direction,” why in the heck would he promote from within? And I would LOVE to see if the apparent gamble on Morris would pay off. I like Spagnuolo (he kinda looks like Shanny to me). I just have to trust the suits to get the right guy, ’cause I sure as hell am not qualified. I am glad to see that we are unanimously unimpressed by the idea of Jason Garrett.

Just go with defense...

Morris, Frazier or Spags would all be good.
I just don’t understand why McDaniels would be the choice when we need a good defensive minded coach to compliment the offense that Bates is capable of running.

by mbg51 on Jan 8, 2009 4:23 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Well...you can still bring in a top DC to really work with the defense right?

Just trying to show that bringing in an offensive type guy isn’t necessarily all that crazy or doesn’t mark the Broncos for failure. I will say I’m with you on guys like Spags, but I think even some of the ‘offensive type’ guys can still be effect as an HC. While I’m still for defense, I don’t feel so bad about an ‘offensive guy’ anymore. A good coach can coach anything (maybe not as well…but who knows? Or at least leave the facet of the game you’re not so sure about up to someone else?). Anyway, I can see why Bowlen’s considering coaches with expertise on all fronts of the game. It’ll be interesting to see who we and who the man that matters choose to dub as the next HC of the Broncos.

by phantom818 on Jan 8, 2009 4:33 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

True, but...

I would prefer a real concentration on defense and I think a defensive minded HC would set defense as the top priority, which I think is necessary. But hey, I haven’t been in the interviews so maybe McDaniels is the right guy.

If you mean...

teams that won the SB – none,
teams that went to the SB – Pittsburg & NE

BTW: I do consider this is issue. I want coaches who know what it takes to get to, and win, the SB. I have the same complaint @ Garrett. Don’t think he’s ever been, let alone won (but I could be wrong).

by SlowWhiteGuy on Jan 9, 2009 12:09 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

well...

I’d say that’s more a prerequisite for a head coach than a coordinator. Do I want Dom Capers to be the HC of the Denver Broncos? Not in a million years. However, as far as DC’s go…I’d put him up with any other current DC or candidate. Does it mean he’s clearly the best? No, but he is undoubtedly up there. He knows what he is doing.

One correction, SWG…Capers was not a part of the Steelers team that went to the Super Bowl. They went the year he left, 1995, when he became the HC of the expansion Panthers. Quite impressively, he then took the Panthers to the NFC Championship Game in his second season.

In Pittsburgh, Capers turned around a defense that had given up the 7th-most points in the NFL in 1991, to the 2nd-fewest in 1992 (Capers and Cowher’s first year after the retirement of Chuck Noll). Take a peek here at the Steelers and their year-to-year numbers…

Just one woprd of caution for everybody...

and which ultimately was the undoing of Shanny.
DONT JUST LOOK AT THE COACH BUT LOOK AT WHO HE WILL BRING IN WITH HIM.
Shanny was/is a great coach, but the coaching staff was average.
Telling me that we get:
1/ McDaniells.
2/ Capers (a former HC and defensive guru).
3/ Keep Bates, Dennison and Turner.

This is a no brainer, and is by far the strongest combination of coaches for our club.

I like Morris, but who comes in as OC (Bates is not the answer yet)….who comes in as DC.

I just like the above collection of guys. We would have one of the strongest coaching staffs out there which would be a NICE change.

Morris said he would keep Bates because he knows him from TB so the offensive staff would most likely stay the same. The question with Morris is who would he bring as DC.

Yep....with Morris questions at DC and OC Gnarly.....

I would be happy with Morris for sure. I want youth at HC with some experience at the co-ordinator positions.

Frazier

I vote for for Frazier. I like the fact that he has been an assistant head coach and has handled many head coaching duties. I like all the candidates, but something about him just stands out to me. May the best man win!

A few thoughts on the HC

I am reading a lot of really good reasons why these guys should be coordinators, not necessarily HC.

McDaniels – has a reputation as an offensive guru in the making, worked a miracle with Cassel this year, comes from a successful program, and does have experience breaking down defenses on tape. His system would mesh well with ours, but he seems a little too pass-happy for my tastes. I think we need a return to run-first. Plus, we already have our own alleged offensive guru in Bates. Finally, NE assistants haven’t panned out on their own; makes me wonder how much of their brilliance is just a reflection of the system they coached in.

Spags – Unknown until this year, suddenly the hot candidate on everyone’s radar. What he has done with NYG defense is impressive, no doubt if he were DC he would get our defense performing at a much higher level; throw in some more quality players and we could have a top 5 defense. BUT we are not looking at Spags for DC; we’re lookiing for a HC. He, like most of the candidates, seems a little short on expereince having only been a coordinator for two seasons.

Raheem Morris – if Spags is short on experience, Morris is a mere baby. He’s been a DC for what 4 weeks. In his favor he seems to be well respected and already has a rapport with Bates. If he were DC I’m sure he could implement an effective T-2 defense. But again, we’re looking for a HC not a DC. Can he make the jump from position coach to HC successfully?

Leslie Frazier – of all the defensive candidates Frazier seems most qualitative to make the jump to HC. He has been a successful DC. He hasn’t been a DC any longer than Spags, but he has been effective in several different organizations and with several different systems. This tells me that he has a deep understanding of defense in general and not just a particular system. Also, having worked in several different organizations he may be open minded about offensive and defensive systems.

Jason Garrett – other than the fact that he’s one of the “sexy” candidates from last year, I’m not sure why he is on this list. His offense fail to show up in the playoffs last year, and sputtered and died this year, even after Romo returned. Can’t seem to tell the ocean form the mountains either. Unlike the previous candidates, I don’t believe he has been to the Super Bowl, let alone won it.

Todd Bowles – Bowles seems to be a carbon copy of Morris only coming out of the Cowboys organization instead of Tampa. He has slightly more experience than Morris, but it concerns me that, like Morris, he’s only worked in one organization. He may be ready for the jump but there’s no way to know. Like Garrett, I don’t think he’s been to the Super Bowl.

Rick Dennison – I’m already on record with my view on Mr. D

The biggest concerns I had were that we might lose him or, if promoted, how would we replace his genius with the O-line. With both of those concerns seemingly resolved, we may be best off retaining him as OC. If the new HC doesn’t pan out we can promote Dennison to HC then.

There’s a lot we don’t, and will never, know. But based on what I’ve heard so far I’m leaning strongly toward Frazier. He may not be the “HOT” prospect but he seems to bring a lot to the table.

by SlowWhiteGuy on Jan 8, 2009 8:37 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Correction...

after some more reading it turns out that Todd Bowles has worked for several organizations, but seems to have followed Parcels around. Not sure how I feel about that. I think the Tuna is still living off his NYG days and at this pioint I wonder how much of his success was do to his DC. It also turns out that Bowles has been to a super Bowl and won, having been on the Redskins when they beat the Broncos.

I’m still leaning toward Frazier, but I would be OK with Bowles or Spags. I’m leary of Mc Daniel and Garrett is a no.

Anyone have an opinion of Charlie Stong as an NFL DC?

Watching the Florida Gators defense was pretty impressive tonight (and they have been impressive the past few years). I have no idea if he would be interested or available to move to the NFL as a DC and I am not sure how comfortable I would be turning the defense over to a college coach. But on the other hand, maybe the secret to getting production from Jarvis Moss.
