REPORT -- Broncos List Trimmed to 5; Offer Coming This Weekend??
Mike Klis is reporting that the Broncos brain trust has trimmed thier candidate list to 5 and are hoping to gain a consensus on a top 1 or 2 with hopes of making an offer this weekend.
According to Klis, Todd Bowles and Rick Dennison are considered "longshots". That leaves Giants DC Steve Spagnuolo, Cowboys OC Jason Garrett, Patriots OC Josh McDaniels, Buccaneers DC Raheem Morris and Vikings DC Leslie Frazier.
Frazier appears to be getting a long look as well.
None of this is really 'news' per se, since we talked earlier this week about the possibility that the Broncos would make an offer is they really were blown away by one of the candidates.
Also, it should be little surprise that Dennison and Bowles are likely not in the running.
Now, across the 'street', Jeff Legwold is reporting that the Broncos are still likely to have a second wave of interviews, starting as early as Monday. The cast od characters is the same, but to Legwold, the sense of urgency is a bit different in terms of when to expect an offer.
Keep it here all weekend, Broncos Fans, as word of an offer, or a new Head Coach could come any day.

I can deal with bears....sharks on the other hand.......of course, I am not talking about if I were menstrual(I’m a guy so that isn’t it), but yeah. I can deal with bears if my arm or something was bleedin’, but sharks? I’ll pass on those. So much
for Adam Schefter’s report that this would be an “exhaustive search.”
I can’t believe we didn’t even give Rex Ryan an interview. Do we really need to move THAT fast?

Don't have to, but why wait?
Rex Ryan has nothing that someone else can’t give us or trump. He is a good coach, but he isn’t worth waiting for.
I personally think it is going to be McDaniels that gets the HC job…I’m hoping we find out soon though!
I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

McDaniels just seems like such a massive gamble to me.
Even former players of his have questioned his readiness to be an HC.
Not to mention…Dom Capers seems like a dissapointment when we could have had the minds of Spags or Frazier working to fix our defense.

After reading a few recent posts,
I’m more inclined to accept an offensive guy who will bring in a top notch DC. I have warmed on McDaniels a little. But he still makes me nervous.

I'm not necessarily rooting for Ryan,
but why is there such a rush? I want to know who our HC is going to be just as much as the next guy, but it has been 1 week and 3 days since Shanahan was fired. It’s like bringing a date to your divorce hearing.
Haste makes waste. Of course, I hope I’m wrong. I’d love to have a new head coach right NOW…okay… NOW!… no? How about….. ummmm…. nnnnnnnnnnnNOW! And I’d love to have him be the guy who leads us to 5 straight super bowl wins. Call me nervous or cautious or whatever but I feel the rush is risky. .

They simply don't like Ryan
that’s the bottom line, unfortunately or fortunately depending on how you feel about Ryan.

We don't know that he didn't turn down an interview.
Who is to say that we didn’t ask him for an interview and he said “I’m fine right where I am, thanks.”

I seriously doubt that...
he wants to be a head coach, why else would he interview with the Chargers (after Marty got axed), Falcons, Dolphins, and Ravens (last year). And, even if he didn’t want the job, which means he’s a idiot of epic proportion, he would at least do the interview, get some press time as a head coaching candidate and improve his chances of landing a HC gig that he like even better than the Broncos, which doesn’t exist, but again, he’d be in idiot to turn us down. No, Denver doesn’t want him. At least that’s what their actions say…

Well, he is a defensive coach.
And all those teams have at least some pieces in place to form a good defense. He could have taken one look at our defensive “talent” and seen enough. You never know.
Or maybe Pat Bowlen just doesn’t like him.

Sounds exhaustive to me
They’ve been flying back and forth across America for over a week, most likely working day and night. They did make it clear they wanted to make a decision within a couple of weeks. .

If we're making an offer in the next couple of days...
does that rule out any coaches (i.e. Spags) who are still in the playoffs?
I doesn’t seem like it’d be too couth to announce a new HC while he’s still coaching a team in the playoffs.

No, we can still give them an offer.
If they accept, they will become the coach when their team loses or after the Super Bowl if they win. This is what happened with Kubiak.

I think it does.
I believe the rule is that after today, all coaches in the playoffs are off limits even to being contacted. The only reason they could talk to Spags when they did was because the Giants were on a bye week.
Or so I'm told.

I know this is
a little off topic since we apparently already have the guys, but has anyone thought about John Lynch coaching a defensive unit? I know that’s up to the head coach and new DC, but the guy seemed like a real motivator and is classy as they come. He was a leader on the field.

I'm probably in the minority, but I
never liked Lynch and hope he stays as far away from our organization as possible. That’s just my personal feeling however. He’d probably make a decent coach, if he wanted to pursue that course. I think he’ll maximize his “tv looks” and wind up on the NFL Network.

Why not leave Dennison's name in their even if you have no intention of naming him HC?
I don’t see the harm in promoting your in house staff. No one had to know, could have left him in there until the final 3 then break the news who you hired. By dropping him now it MAY send some bad signals…it may not, I am just saying.
I hope he isn’t disgruntled.

Dennison
I think he’d have a right to be disgruntled if they hire an O guy, less so if they hire a D guy. Also, I don’t think Dennison is the type to get emotionally upset about much.

I am sure he will be professional and it won't be an issue, however
just from an image standpoint, if you own the Broncos, wouldn’t you want to make it look like your assistants are talented and are definately in the running, even if you know they aren’t. What makes to other assistants more prepared than your guy? Even though you and I understand that he isn’t even Coordinator for Denver and the others are at least in charge of a big unit. It is hardly common knowledge who Dennison is outside of Bronco Nation.

I think Raheem Morris
is the front runner with Josh McD the surprise pick and Spags the safe, yet hot pick (does that make sense). Dark horse is Leslie “Joe” Fraiser and Garrett is on the list….well, I don’t know why he’s on the list…

I just watched ESPN and Mortensen was on there saying that he believes it’s down to 2 – Frazier & McDaniels. He also said that McDaniels had dinner with Bowlen on Thursday.

Thanks to Mike Shanahan, a great coach who will be dearly missed.
Since we have to hire someone, please get a defensive coach Mr. Bowlen.

Of those two...
I would prefer Frazier. Though I wouldn’t be disappointed if we hired either of them. Of the guys on the list, the only one I wouldn’t be happy with is Jason Garrett. Though I wish Spags was one of those two…

Think this thru...
League rules prohibit interviewing a coach whose team is still in the playoff. There’s only one guy who that affects: Spags. So, either they want Spags but want to rule out the others before making an offer (which doesn’t fit what we’ve heard so far) or Spags is out of the running.
It seems to be down to Frazier and McDaniels. It makes sense. Both have been very successful coordinators. Look at the job Frazier has done with the Vikings defense and what McDaniels has done without Brady. I think I prefer Frazier, but I would be okay with either depending on the DC they bring in.

Frazier
The one thing that bugs me about Frazier is that he was handed the keys to a really good defense, then got it seriously upgraded with the addition of Jared Allen and managed to keep it performing at a high level. It doesn’t say to me that he did a bang up job necessarily. Also, I’m just not a big fan of the Tampa-2 anymore, it seems to have run it’s course.
On the plus side, I think Frazier might be a better motivator, which is becoming more important to me as things go on. I would like whoever comes in to hire a good DC, keep our OC in place and focus on getting all 53 to play their hearts out every week. Frazier sounds more like that guy than McDaniels. Form what I hear, Morris even more so, but Frazier would be better connected to bringing in a good DC.
Or so I'm told.
