Good to see B Marsh being so wary of those who would stoke controversy
He seems to be getting it — the NFL is not about anything except the W on Sunday. Put enough of those together in a row, you get a nice fat payday.
Conversation nonstarters: hoping McDaniels fails, comparing Bears to Broncos, Cutler to Orton, apples to oranges, and casual drinkers to Raiders fans.
With Kuper, Elvis, BM, Orton and Scheff having deals that expire after this season, Bowlen might have to get his checkbook ready and have ample cash on hand. It could be the summer of big signing bonuses around Dove Valley. Good thing it doesn’t look like there will be a salary cap in 2010. The time may be right to front load deals.
Love the Broncos. Mike Nolan is a genius.
Boy I'd sure hate to lose any of those guys
I just hope Mr. B has the cashola to get those deals done.

Mike Lombardi ranked Denver at 19 (below 0-3 Tennessee) in his power rankings this week. The more I read him, the more I realize that guy is nothing more than a contrarian. He gets off on being the first guy to call a future trend. Like the rest of the MSM, take what he writes with a grain of salt.

Didn't Lombardi
once work for the Broncos? I sometimes wonder if these guys carry a grudge or let their past infect their present opinions. There’s no real logical reason for him to rank Denver below Tennessee, none. So that’s the only thing I can think of.

How are we overrated?
Wouldn’t that imply that someone, anyone, out there is overrating us? As far as I’ve seen, nobody (bar one or two) in the media is treating us like we’re legit. They’ve shown us cautious skepticism at best, citing the “fluke” play of Cin, and how we only beat what were apparently the two worst teams to ever done a uniform (they have to be if the Broncos beat them, right? In fact, so many people still doubt us, call us pretenders, and think we’re worse than our record, that I’d go as far to say we’re a little underrated.

Royal pulled up lame?
I’m not seeing any news on Royal being hurt.
It seems to me that the Broncos really need him. Up till now, apparently Denver’s opponents have been scheming to take him out of the game. If he does not play or is limited, then Dallas can revert to their strategy against Steve Smith in week 3: bracket the opponent’s main threat (who would become Brandon Marshall), and play the run.
not exactly schemeing to take him away
rather we have been facing good outside coverage combos with the safeties. This will be the first week that we face a team still trying to assemble its backfield, rather than the backfield being one of the strongest areas of the team.
The first three games featured defenses that covered the outside very well, but left the middle zones wide open, and so that is what we attacked. Royal’s strength is his precise routerunning, and the Broncos used that strength to help keep the defenses from adjusting to the middle of the field.
IF royal isn’t seriously hampered by what looks like a groin pull, than this week could be a feature week for him.
Isn’t the rotation in D this week for Scandrick to get the start? That would put Jenkins on Marshall or stokely most of the time…

Interesting.
I think that the Cowboys feel that they have found their backfield now, but we’ll see this weekend, I suppose. Scandrick is now the slot CB; Jenkins has won the starting job as of this week. I agree that this could be a big game for Royal.
Dallas seems to cover the short middle ok, with a good coverage nickel LB in carpernter and an above average FS with Sensabaugh, both new to these roles with Dallas this year. But they’ve let some plays get behind them. Much of the problem has also been the pass rush: teams have been doubling Ware, and the Strong OLB, Anthony Spencer, has not been able to take advantage. The Rookie Butler got a couple of sacks and a forced fumble in his 5 plays from that position in the 4th quarter vs. Carolona. Of course, its wildly premature to even think that he will be the solution.
This all begs the question: can Orton take advantage of the Cowboys’ weakness for the deep ball? He’s more of a 3 step drop, fire quickly kind of guy (living in Chicago, I saw plenty of that last year).
good to see you styg!

Gosh, I hope they do, Diws
That will give Gaffney and Stokes a long, lovely day of catch and run…Scheffler could get a couple extra catches, the RBs can pull in a few more. That’s one of the biggest strengths of the Broncos O this year – we’re not locking in on one receiver, nor do we need to. I can only hope that Dallas believes that they can double-team one player. Smith is the only legit threat on the Panthers right now. That tactic would be fatal for the ’Boys

I'm thinking 31-21 Broncos
Time for the offense to bail out the defense, although I’m a bit worried about the O-line injuries. Hope Hochstein and Polumbus are up to the job if Hamilton and Kuper can’t go. Orton will probably have the glove off, which will help his accuracy, and both he and Moreno have been improving from week to week. That’s why I’m thinking the offense might break out. I’m beginning to see what Styg saw in Moreno. He’s decisive and lightning quick in his cuts and runs with power in addition to his other attributes. I think the Broncos’ ace in the hole vs. Dallas’ run game is our ability to limit big plays. Occasionally teams have gotten good running lanes, usually off tackle, it seems, but our safeties have been solid in holding them to 10-12 yard gains. The article on Goodman and Hill went a long ways towards explaining the secondary’s cohesiveness. I wonder if McDaniels suspected that if he got Hill he’d have a really good chance of getting Goodman also?

we haven’t given that many points up in three games. I actually think we win with a moderately close game , but I don’t see the boys cracking the 20’s against Dawk and the D.

what about...
The key to stopping the Cowboys’ rushing attack, Holliday said, will be maintaining discipline and remembering your assignment throughout the play.
“Coach always talks about ’We’ve got to build a wall,’” Holliday said. “When we see teams on film, when they break down is when there is a break in the chain, when guys up field are trying to get at the quarterback when it is a running play and they find the seams. They are so talented that when you make a mistake they can capitalize on it.”
So both teams will look to play to their strengths come Sunday, and as Dumervil put it, “Something will have to give.”
I think U R right about the “bail out”, because this will be a run stopping test for our D!!! If the Dallas Cow grills can put the beef on the grill on Sunday, then that will only B a test if in fact the Dallazz running back trio R HEALTHY!!!!!!!!!
They are NOT! And one more tough hit by B Dawk could put their running game OUT 4 the year, well maybe not everyone.

Kitten and Boydy have questioned
my prediction that Dallas will score 21 points. (Just think, a few months ago they probably would have thought I was being too optimistic!) I hope they’re right. My thinking is just that sometimes a game turns into an offensive shootout, other times into a defensive battle, and we’re about due for the former. That I expect Dallas to score 21 in a “shootout” is an indication of how far our defense has come. If I have to offer a specific reason for that score, beyond a gut feeling, it would be Dallas’ huge offensive line. I’m afraid they might push us around at first, although I think they’ll wear down over the course of the game. I do think they’ll be vulnerable to our pass rush, though. One point I didn’t consider is that I’m not sure Dallas will be able to finish off many of their drives. A more realistic expectation might be one TD and four FGs, for a score of 19. If by happenstance one of those FGs becomes a second TD that would make it 23. So let me suggest that it’ll be three TDs and three or four FGs for us, and five total scores, with one or two of them being TDs, for Dallas. Of course turnovers could knock that prediction into a cocked hat.
Speaking of wall, has anyone noticed there’s an implicit contradiction between the notion of a) doing one’s job by staying at home and preserving all the links in the chain that constitutes that wall; and b) flying to the ball so that the ball carrier is swarmed under and gang-tackled? That contradiction is resolved by timing. Stay home too long and a brilliant ball carrier has only one or two people to beat, is only one or two moves from breaking a big one. Leave too soon and there’s a break in the chain in the form of a cutback lane. Each player must leave at the right time, must judge when his initial assignment has been completed such that moving to another no longer leaves the runner with a weakness to exploit. I think the teamwork-oriented players McDaniels has acquired, and the quality coaching they’ve received, accounts of the fact that their timing and cohesion in this respect has been so brilliant.

Woody
Is it just me – and it could be – or is there a strange psychological/sociological phenomenon going on with Woody and McDaniels – if you’ll recall, Woody was stiffed for an interview when McD was out at a restaurant in Denver very early on, and I don’t think he’s forgiven him for it – now it seems like he’s out to prove that Denver is HIS (Woody’s) town and the fans are HIS to convince, rather than the other way around. My guess is that he’ll start to warm to McDaniels on HIS terms, as the team progresses, so that like with a new rookie on a team, McDaniels has to earn positive marks over time before Woody will concede that he’s a true Bronco and belongs in Denver. It’s the winning recipe for every plot from most good (and all bad) sports movies – new guy wins over cold hearted veteran over time, everybody celebrates over a trophy.
I'm really confused
Especially since Woody had that nice interview session with McD during camp and came away with one of the first glowing reviews of the guy. How he could pivot so drastically is beyond me… he didn’t like Orton’s four INT game, maybe?

That Woody is unbalanced. Mentally divergent. No, I am serious. He’s one of those loony tunes like Al Davis who acts just sane enough so that people simply think he is eccentric.
But he’s out there. Way out there somewhere. Ground Control to Major Tom out there.

I think he is word driven,
not analysis driven. If it sounds good, he can’t leave it alone, and ends up making the story match the punchline, so to speak.
That's brillant
Many people will adjust their opinions to fit an externality ( e.g. A spouse) but that really is the most characteristic part of Woody: get a short opinion or headline and then whip it like a rented mule until you reach your word quota for the article.

Story in Dallas News on the Denver Defense
Is the Denver Defense for Real?
My only other suggestion is to ignore most of the comments on those blog posts. About 75% of the comments are evenly divided between bigoted trolls and clueless homers. (Not that that is much different from many other sports sites, sadly.) Better comments from Cowboys fans on their SBN blog. Anyway the article was short but sweet.

NFLNetwork Picks on AFC Playbook
Joe Theismann and Sterling Sharpe picked Denver, Brian Baldinger picked Dallas (for what it’s worth, probably not much). But Theisman and Sharpe were both pretty complimentary of the Broncos’ blocking and that the team was no longer about “finesse”. Although Sharpe also said we’ll find out about some of the “unknowns in the broncos secondary, we know about Champ Bailey, and we know about Brian Dawkins but we don’t know about the other guys who will be tested.” Uh, maybe YOU don’t know about Reynaldo Hill and Andre Goodman, Sterling, but most of the league knows a lot about them. Duh-er.
Also Baldinger said the Cowboys Defense will be hard for the Denver line to deal with, especially NT Jay Ratliff.
Anyway, just for what it’s worth…
