From another coaches perspective: Having McDaniels is just not fair.....to the rest of the NFL.
Hi Everyone,
Long time since I posted anything.
I just wanted to chime in with some things that I have seen from Coach McDaniels from my perspective as a coach from ANOTHER sport and let you guys mull on them a little bit.
Anyway, read after the jump and hit me back with comments!
A quick background on my coaching. I have coached different sports, from tennis, to golf, to rugby and to my career now as a snowboard coach for more elite athletes (which I have done for over 10 years!). I am a career coach, and have helped to write education material for coaches, train coaches how to coach as well as train and coach athletes.
Now I am very lucky. I love what I do, and I have had a very fun and rewarding career, and one which I continue to pursue.
I get a kick out of being coached myself, love to watch other coaches at work, no matter what the sport, and always try and walk away with something new in my own bag of tricks.....there is always something NEW you can learn from other coaches and your own athletes.
Which leads me to Coach McDaniels. One thing I have always wondered about NFL coaching and Rugby coaching, which are very similiar in methodology, is WHY more coaching techniques from other sports are not incoroporated into the codes of football,
I have never heard one of my own rugby coaches, not ever heard any interview from any NFL where they have mentioned the learning styles of athletes, the pathways in which an athlete will most effectively absorb and retain information. I have never seen in rugby or NFL where the individual is looked at first and evaluated BEFORE the team as a whole is looked at and evaluated.
Now, when breaing it down to what it is, does it not seem strange that in MOST cases a team has a system in place and expects the players to adapt, rather than evaluating players FIRST, and then buidling a system around the players?
Here are some things that, not as a Bronco's fan, but as a fellow coach, have I been over the moon impressed with Coach McDaniels, and also with his coaching staff:
- Hiring: Coach McDaniels brought in other coaches that were teachers: coaches that could relay information in simple and logical terms. From Coach Nunnely, to Coach Nolan, to McDaniel's himself, these are all guys that know how to COMMUNICATE....not just with the spoken form. They know how to reach the players on all levels.
- Treating the individual as an individual: I have NEVER heard a football coach speak about learning styles or Learning types. To help some of you that have not coached, there are 4 learning types. The DOER is the type that must go out and do the task to get it. The WATCHER that must watch the task to be able to understand it. The THINKER that needs to listen to the information and then process it their own minds before they can perform it and then the FEELER who must feel the task in their bodies to be able to allow them the muscle memory to learn the task. Now, as a coach, if you can identify what type of learner your athlete is, will aloow you to coach more effectively and efficiently. Coach clearly knows how to do this, and this would explain why the Broncos are ahead of the curve. Also, you can tell that this is flowing down to the other coaches on his staff as well. Coach also understands the learning styles of his athletes: Visual who like to learn by watching, Auditory that like to learn by listening and Kinesthetic that learn by feeling. Just from the footage I have seen from camp, you can see McD EXPLAINING things, you see him DEMONSTRATING things and then have seen him be "hands on" and let the players FEEL the task. Him and his coaches are covering and coaching to ALL the learning styles and types.
- Creating an environment of success: Simply, athletes must trust the coaches, trust the support staff and feel comfortable in their surroundings to prosper.
- Buying in to a system: Athletes need to be shareholders and partners in the system with some decision making ability. STraight from the players mouths, you here how behind the HC the players are, and what believers they are. They are part of the team, and they feel like members of the team. SImilarly, you have never seen McDaniels above the team. One of his quotes from this week was awesome...he feels confident because of the players he has. He has belief in his athletes, he has their back, and he puts them above him.
These are just some of the things that I see that from our coach. He has done an outstanding job.
In conclusion, I feel almost sorry for the rest of the NFL. Here is a young man who has been raised as a coach, who has a good deal of old school in him, being fiery and not being scared to be physical in his training camps. But I also see a very progressive coach: one that thinks outside the box, one that uses new training and coaching methods and techniques, and uses all resources available to him both inside and outside the game.
He reminds me of John Wooden a lot. Wooden was seen as a wet behind the ears coach that would never make it. He was different from other Basketball coaches. He saw things differently, and coached with an ATHLETE first mentality. John Wooden is perhaps the greatest coach EVER from any sport.
Coach McDaniels has many of the same traits. Any coach that puts athletes first, will have a great kick start to success!
Hope you enjoyed the read guys!
Peace!

As an athlete myself
I have never witnessed any of my coaches change their approach to suit the players as individuals. When we do something, we do it one way and that’s it.
Yep....and its a thing you get with more experience....
But it is a sure fire way to have athletes stop believing in you.
Mangini looks to me to be the “my way or the highway” type guy…and you can see whats going on in Cleveland.
If you dont know the individuals on the team, how do you BUILD a team….cause you will not know the strength of the team as you dont know the strengths of the individuals.
Thanks Nation for the comments…would be stoked to hear what more athletes or ex athletes think!

G’Day Boydy,
The first time I had the differnet cognitive learning techniques explained to me, was by Dean Hill if you remember him, who was the head instructor at perisher many years ago, and it stuck in my mind ever since.
Wasen’t Mike Holmgren a teacher before he became a coach?
Great write up mate.

My best mate lives up at Sandpoint in ID near Schweitzer so we are considering trying to get over there for late January, but its just about lambing season for the Misses with our first.. shes due to go any day.. so we will make that call abit closer..
Great to hear from you, funny about Dean I doubt he would remember me I was a young tacker, the other thing I still remember from him was the 23 & 15 deg stance he set me up with.. funny how techniques evolve :)
Anyway I better not hijack the thread, great read chat soon.

I love this article and agree with all of your conclusions. This fellow is a pretty rare find. At 33, his ideas are still cutting edge. He was the coordinator for the most prolific scoring offense in history. I don’t expect much less in the future, even though he’s using a somewhat different approach right now. Great post, Ben

My view of McD as a teaching coach
is based on what I have seen him do, but mostly on what I have heard him say during various interviews or in quotes I have read. I recognize the lingo, the style, and in the interview from Monday he gave an impromptu lesson on how to get through to each type of learner in the NFL environment. I was indeed impressed.
I believe that he would require the same kind of teaching mentality in his coaches, but I have not had the pleasure of hearing interviews with any of the other coaches. As such, I can’t say that all of the coaches are up to speed on the same type of visual/aural/tacile teaching model.
Is there anything concrete that anyone has heard out of the mouth of Nolan, Martindale, Nunnely, etc?
Wherever you go, there you are.
Thanks YS...
I recall quotes from Champ on what a great teacher Nolan was, and how he played to the strength of each player. Similarly with Nunnely, he has a teaching video out on the 3-4. The way things are broken down on this tape are pretty awesome. SImple, concise and to the point.
I ahve heard the same things about Bobby Turner from any running back interviewed. It seems to be a co-operative of like minded coaches. I am psyched!

I’ve got that video and you’re right – pure gold. Very matter of fact, plain language, simple approach, complex information. Wonderful stuff, indeed. Bobby Turner is becoming a legend, Rick Dennison has nearly equaled Alex Gibb, and the list goes on. Everything I hear from the locker room is about how great the coaches are and how good the OTHER players are. No one seems to be willing to talk about themselves, which is what you want. This is pretty giddy stuff.

I think of it like signing up for college classes. There’s a section you want with a specific teacher and there’s one where you don’t want a certain teacher. McD is the teacher you want and everybody is going to fill up that section first and there will be a massive waiting list for the class and everybody is gonna be super mad because they WANT IN THE CLASS AND THERE IS NO MORE ROOM LEFT!!!!!!

Any advice on how I can improve my surfing backhand? I’m pretty good frontside but my backside snaps just don’t feel right. I can’t really get vertical, and they seem more like cutbacks than snaps.
I’m sure an Aussie like yourself knows how to do it properly.

Thanks Kwool....
On your back hand, a big thing people do is they take off, race the section and then bottom turn which takes them out of the posket of the wave, which turns a snpw into a round house top turn/ cutback type thing.
Try and tae off a little vertically…or even do a little set up turn back towards the white water and then bottom turn late…the snap will be set up by bottom turn..later bottom turn will turn you into the pocket better…make sense?
Normally a timing issue with surfing.

It's almost as if
McD actually paid attention and learned in college (academically) and through all of his playing/coaching experiences. I want to make a distinction between learning and just mimicking. I think there are quite a few coaches who simply parrot the coaches they learned under instead of truly learning the nuances behind how a particular coach taught/motivated/etc. This might explain why some coaches who come from good coaching trees (Walsh, Belichick) fail as head coaches when given the opportunity and others such as McD (signs are point that he’s the real deal) succeed.

It would be interesting to conduct an actual study of coaches
to see if my theory holds water… there are still a ton of variables involved in a coach experiencing success: players, front office, health, etc…, but I think the good ones are the ones who actually think for themselves….they’re able to adapt for more easily than those that don’t….
"Never attribute to malice what can be adequately explained by stupidity."
Unknown, Hanlon's Razor
What makes them good?
I’ve been thinking about this one as I read and research. What I’m finding isn’t exactly rocket science to comprehend – most of the coaches who are truly great are those who can break down film (Belichick is a genius at it and his best friend and assistant, Ernie Adams, literally started coaching in middle school and is brilliant, as is McDaniels, as was Walsh, Gillman, etc, etc), establish a game plan that confounds the opponents, who enjoys having great coaches around him and who can communicate to the players how to institute the game plan and how to carry it out. There are exceptions, and have been, historically, but the ones who are currently great seem to be much of this type.
Hillis/Moreno in '09
Guess you could call that the COMPLETE package....
All the coaches mentioned are humble, never rag on their opponents, put their players first, set them up for success, RESEARCH and keep EDUCATING themselves and then TEACH their coaches AND players about the phiosophy, history and mechanics of the game.
And guess what…these are common traits in ALL great coaches in ALL sports.
One of the greatest things I ever heard from another coach was from Bud Keene who has been the most successful Olympic Winter Coach ever, helping the US to a slew of medals in snowboarding. it was simple and succinct; “We need to stay on top of our sport and let our athletes dictate the course of the sport. It is a MOVING target, so when you stop moving with the sport you lose contact with it.” (This was paraphrased).
The same can be said with football.

I’m still a relative newby here on this site, joined up in the offseason during all the Cutler craziness. I have commented over and over how much I’ve enjoyed reading all the posts from the various writers/posters, but must say this is one of my favorites.
At one time I thought about becoming a teacher but ended up going in a different direction. But I did help feed the “jones” by coaching my son’s baseball team for years.
Had to re-read the back and forth with you and Scotto a few times to fully get it, but really enjoyed that as well.

Great perspective, and I know exactly what you’re talking about with the different learning styles. Personally, I’m a “do-er”, as I’ve figured out over the years – I like getting inside things and seeing what makes them tick.
I’d love to see you post more on your McD observations as the season progresses, especially as other teams begin (inevitably) to get a read on what’s happening in Denver.
At this point in the season, all the Rockies' numbers are magic.
Also...
…is it possible for you to explain why Jerry Jones looks more like he’s coaching the ’Boys than Wade Phillips does?
I mean, if that doesn’t explain itself, of course. :)
At this point in the season, all the Rockies' numbers are magic.
Awesome Post
Thanks for the great perspective Boydy!
Among the greatest feelings are teaching someone how to do something, and then see them surpass the teacher in their achievement. And as we saw in Coach’s comments, he also knows that different students learn differently and that teaching is most effective when it is individualized to the pupils.
Your post was totally spot-on in correlating teaching/coaching as a universal skill, no matter what the sport.

Well played, sir...
Great post Boydy, from a resident lurker. As an athlete, I never had a coach that “gets it” quite like coach McDaniels does. I have had some pretty darn good coaches throughout the years, don’t get me wrong, but this guy is on a whole other level. Now that I have started coaching youth football for the last couple years, I have learned immense amounts of knowledge from other coaches. There is plenty to learn here as well with such great writers. I have seen these kids when the lightbulb goes on so to speak,

and I definately see that different kids have different learning styles. I am going to take some of the things I learn from Josh McDaniels, and use it in my own coaching style. I also know a thing or two about the “my way” style of teaching (dictating) as I spent 8 years in the army. Again, great post Boydy!

How do they say it
“Trying to Catch Lightning in a Bottle?’” McDaniels has impressed me with his attention to detail and thoroughness. I saw these things first hand during Camp. Being so young, the results I saw made me believe he was the real deal. Especially when the Veterans were happy with him as their leader. I also noticed the hands on approach in Camp. Anyway, It didn’t take me long to be convinced that Pat Bowlen made the right choice. A great read Boydy. Thanks for sharing.

McD's other strengths
One thing that makes McD a good coach is his ability to analyze a player’s strengths and weaknesses. This allows him to correct those things that need adjustment and also to put the player in a place that takes advantage of his strengths. Coincidentally, those are exactly the same skills useful in evaluating players for the draft. I anticipate some great drafts in the coming years – even better than this year’s since McD is still young and still learning on the job (scary thought).

Excellent Post boydy
Love this stuff. I spent years as a technical trainer in the Navy and your abosolutly right he uses all the techiques to get the individual to understand his teaching points. I can see him covering material for the say the offense as a whole and then going back to each individual or the individual and his position coach to fine tune the bigger concept. Man I’m jazzed by this. How could a team not be ready to go with this type of coaching.
love this post
I coach youth volleyball and have had various levels of resistance as I try to put my athletes first. Club ball can be very catty among parents and political w/fellow coaches that get a bit insecure when a colleague steals a little of their thunder.
I haven’t really come up w/an opinion about McDaniels as I rather review the season, his body of work, once its complete. What I am impressed w/is his attention to detail. Secondly, all of his additions were more so of acquiring players to be in a situation where they could be successful. I’ve always felt that, as a coach, if you can simply what’s normally complex and created a subtext that promotes learning w/o the pressures of failing…individuals will always be in a situation where they can be successful. Hence, “I’ll never have you in a situation for you to fail”. Its a quote I sorta picked up while in the Army and use it everyday.

Thanks for the excellent insite Boydy. I went to training camp and loved how he would do the individual drills and incorporate that drill in to team drills later to show how the two relate.

Thanks Daytona.....I have a feeling they are already using some simulation....
In my game, we use VIDEO extensively and will use some simulation as well…..I am also stoked how McDaniels is using something that I like to use: Train how you compete and compete how you train……it raises the level of each and ensures positive muscle memory under ANY circumstance.
You have heard all season how Coach uses GAME situations. Go figure!

For us Video = AAR (After Action Review)
The entire simulation exercise is captured and then they can play it back with full VCR capabilities with the ability to move the camera around and see the exercise from different perspectives. The commanders then sit in a classroom setting with the students and go over the exercise. They have always said AAR is the most important part of simulation training.
I could definitely see the same pattern done with any number of activities.

I probably waited way to long to look at this thread,
but I’ve got to thank you Boydy.
I recognize the learning styles you bring up. We have different terminology but, as I try to tell my students, I don’t get hung up on terminology. The ideas are the same. I think if you don’t adjust your teaching strategy for the individual student, you’re just making it harder for them to succeed. Student success must be your ultimate goal or you shouldn’t be a teacher.
I’ve always thought it was strange that more coaches (and teachers) don’t look enough at other sports and even other disciplines for better ideas. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel every time. Somebody may have already done it and if you have an open mind you can make it work for your students too.
If this be Hell, let us make the most of it!
Thanks TJ....yeah, its the old "we know better than you do" thing....
I ahve seen it with regards to alpine skiing vs snowboarding!
I ahve taken so much from the alpine world, but it is very funny when you try and lend some advice to SOME alpine coaches….its like you have just stolen their dog!
Those that cant coach, compete!
Failing to plan is planning to fail.
All I want is 53 Rod Smiths. Is that asking too much????
